Surprise Beaver Dam on a Hot Dry Day | Culvert Unclogging
Its that time of year when its extremely hot and dry here. I was completely unprepared on this day when I came across a dam the beavers had built to stop some irrigation run off. Sorry for the terrible angle, I didn't have any of my equipment with me on this day. Beaver dams are few and far between when it gets this dry here this time of year so couldn't pass it up. Watch for snakes!

I never thought this would work and still have my doubts, but it's been almost two months and no beaver dams.

While making the rounds today, the water levels were looking good until I came across one section that was really high. The blockage wasn't in the normal spots, so it took a bit of searching to find it. This one was a bit difficult in that it was surrounded by the slippery embankment and very soft sinky mud.

In this episode we start at a heavily silted drainage ditch that I tried getting in but couldn't due to it not having a bottom that wasn't likely over my head. So I get it done the hard way but still get it done, dislodging and removing a massive clog. We then move up the ditch and get a massive outlet flow on the back field pipe after removing a dam. This pipe also had a blockage on the outlet...

The water is about the same as last week even after a few inches of rain. This is a good indication the outer gates and spillways are doing their job holding the water back. At this point, I don't see any signs of beavers so hopefully they have moved on for now.

    You shouldn't place it so close to the water. Throw it farther onto the land. That way it won't wash back down into the water when it rains.

      Shovels are generally useless against a beaver dam. If it were just mud they'd be fine but Shovels do nt go through the tree limbs and cane good at all.

      I see how you might be confused. This is a compilation and therefore lacks some of the context that would have been included in the full length video. The partial unblocking is intentional. We are trying to hold back a certain amount for waterfowl in the winter but when we have rain coming or get too much held, we need to bleed a little off. We punch a hole and let drain all day until the beaver closes it later that night.

      @BarrettFarms Місяць тому

      I think it was last year maybe, it's in a past video. I ran a rope through the pipe and left it there just in case I ever needed to pull a chain through and use something like a tire to dislodge a dam. Wouldn't you know it, I removed it early this spring because I had yet to need it and didn't want it getting caught up in a mower or anything. Could have been a game changer here on this day.

    What’s the pink strap tied to that grate?

    • @BarrettFarms
      @BarrettFarms Місяць тому

      Just to help hold the grate in place. Sometimes, if the mud foundation underneath them is dug out, the grate tends to want to tip back away from the pipe. Mainly needed when a backhoe or excavator is used around the pipe opening.

    Cold and wet in Ireland. Farmers are only on their second silage cut and some are already using this year's first cut to feed cattle because grass growth is so slow. I only have about half an acre to cut and I've cut it three times this year... usually I have cut it 7 or 8 times by now and am happy growth is slowing due to mid-Summer being past. Things are going to be serious next Winter. Imagine not being able to grow grass in Ireland!!! I can hardly believe it. I'm still enjoying your videos and love when your Dad is with you. Best Wishes, Brendan.

      Just the thumbnail, let alone the video literally shows that's not true. I realize it might make for better content but not all culverts require getting into the water to unclog. We purposely use the mud we pull out to build out ground so we can stand on and easily unclog the pipe. We try to do what we can to not have to get in the water, especially during warm months due to certain water hazards.

    I have a set of Corsa All Terrain XL 31x10.50R15LT on my 1984 K5 Blazer with a stock suspension (all new stock parts). Never had tires that hydroplane as bad as these. To the point where I won't drive on the highway if its a heavy downpour. They also grab and pull all over the road depending on road conditions. Interesting that you had no issue with them. The size of mine are the stock size that my k5 came with in 84'. I mainly use the truck to tow my Bass boat which is aluminum. So it's not heavy. Towing or not though the tires behave the same.

    • @BarrettFarms
      @BarrettFarms 3 місяці тому

      I wish I had been able to long term test them with greater wear down. I could see these being a tire that would be prone to hydroplane issues when tread depth becomes low. What is tread depth on yours? Did you have hydroplane issues when they were new?
