    In the third party commercial world.....whenever I write up a compressor for replacement, I stress that most compressors do not die from natural causes. Indeed.... most are murdered. I always mention that there are several potential causes of failure, and those causes cannot be identified until the defective compressor is replaced with a working compressor. Those potential causes include: 1) dirty condenser coils, 2) clogged or defective metering device(s), 3) overcharging by other contractors because of the metering device, or restriction other than the metering device, and 4) power or capacitor problems. The client or trade specialist or rep then understands that there will very often be a follow-up quote once the causal factor has been identified. If the dryer which was replaced during the compressor replacement is severely restricted, then often no other cause is found, but we need to make the customer aware of the potential additional costs BEFORE the work gets approved. In some cases, knowing that additional work could nearly double the repair cost, the client will ask for a unit replacement quote as well so they can give the store corporate all of the available options.

      @@jph77 When people ask me about sizing, I explain that the smaller system takes longer to achieve the setpoint, and that longer run time allows for greater removal of water from the air, which makes you more comfortable even if the dry bulb temp is warmer in a given room. I use the analogy of stepping out of the bathroom after a shower, and how cold the hallway feels. It is because of the evaporational cooling happening on the surface of the skin. A dryer house allows for more skin evaporation, and it feels much cooler than a cold, clammy house.

    A little brazing tip for your boss, Refrigeration supermarket technician here upon brazing highly recommended that you heat the inner diameter pipe up evenly first allows that heat to penetrate the piping to the center of the fittings, and then start heating up evenly around the outside until you get that nice color change and then apply the brazing rod evenly and the capillary action like in plumbing

    Thanks dude. You did great. I'm an electrician and I have made mistakes too. And I went back to review the error you saw. I get it. The there aren't service ports inboard of those king valves. So it needed the whole system drained and vacuumed etc. I don't I would make that one because as a newbie I'd be checking every move I made. But here is what I wish to comment about today. This compressor was likely in good shape electrically, would have passed winding tests etc but it failed to compress air. I believe I have the same thing going on here now. And I'm gambling on a new compressor because it's been hard to gather anything on this good motor bad compressor situation. More , even a whole show on diagnosis of this trouble. Thank you.

    I was watching the brazing of the suction line to the compressor, happy to see the use of nitrogen and wondering how the nitrogen was being vented since the rubber plug was still on the discharge line connection on the compressor. I always worked alone and therefore never could have turned over a compressor replacement in such a short time as you both did! I wondered also about the dye in the system has indicated an on going leak issue with the system. I don’t think you could have pulled a proper vacuum if there was one.

    On my last compressor I fit up my compressor.....then cut it out in a spot where I could put an RLS coupling on the suction and discharge. I then removed the compressor and brazed the piping outside the condenser in a more accessible spot and pressed it in at the couplings. Worked well. My only concern was how the discharge coupling would hold up. Only time will tell.

    But I did not see any quick Qwick check acid test.
    Also is good to put hot block on the compressor special discharge outlet because there is a sensor on the top of the scroll compressor.

    King valves and Service valves are different. You don't see King valves on modern units, they were mostly used on Carrier products. King valves, did not have schrader valves in them, you had to close them slightly to get pressure to the line ports. Service valves have schrader valves in them, so all you have to do is put your hoses on them. I always hated King valves, because you always had to have a service wrench to check pressures. Good video, everyone has screwups it how you handle them that matters.

    • @benjamintimmins1656
      @benjamintimmins1656 2 роки тому

      Wrong! King valves exist on all condensing units...what your referring to is a 3 position service valve usually on older carriers...

    • @kraigkearns1527
      @kraigkearns1527 5 місяців тому

      I know this is late but just wanted to add. King valves were used when air conditioning became popular in the 1970s. They functioned as both Schrader and service valves. The Schrader valve married with a parker valve is much cheaper to manufacture.

    Just curious Mikey why didn't you braze the elbow closest to the compressor 15:30 outside before install then braze the final connection on the 7/8s line 14:45. If I had to venture a guess, you placed the unit inside to rough in the elbow and its less effort to leave it all in there to be braze.

    If your head pressure was that high them that compressor won’t last. Should’ve checked the metering device and for kinks. These rheems dont like long runs either. I always upsize the line set on 4 ton to 10 rheem splits

    LOL A good technician is cognizant of his surroundings and corrects his mistakes as he makes them. Don't worry you're only human, Mikey. How hot was it you might be able to also claim being *delirious.* That said I think these Ruuds may not be that great I replaced one a few months ago due to no pumper, compressor just spinning eating 18amps of energy all day long for the fun of it.

      I actually had another tech condemn a compressor on an older unit he had done some work on and closed the isolated valves and forget to open them. So it would blow the breaker immediately on start up. So he recovered the charge and my manager sent me back the next day. I was about a year in so I went back thinking it was recovered did exactly what you did and it blew right in my face. Did nothing to me except stain my shorts haha. But dam that thing blew
