Another win at 5:49: In the Gen VI games, Pokémon have a sweet spot where they like to be petted in Pokémon-Amie. Pikachu's sweet spot is the chin. Nice reference there.
The hypothetical scenario I’ve been thinking is a movie IN the Pokémon universe, advertised as being unrelated to Detective Pikachu but obviously still existing in the same world. Maybe a movie following the (mis)adventures of the Champions of each region? But, at some point in the movie, the skill set of a detective would become necessary, and one of the characters would say “...I know someone.” as the Ryme City musical cue plays. Cliche and campy? Probably. But I’d still love it.
He claims he isn’t knowledgeable on Pokémon, yet he pointed out that Psyduck’s Psychic move worked against Greninja, a dark type who is supposed to be immune. And in the next breath rationalizes it with Greninja’s unique special ability Protean, which turns it into the same type of the attack it’s using (which in this case is Water Shuriken) thus allowing Confusion to land. CinemaWins, you are hustling us sir! Also, LOVE the shoutout to cute little Bulba! #adorable
"I'm not the biggest pokemon fan but..." 10 min later.... "Dark type Greninja gets hit with psychic type attack...must have protean..." Ok guy sure lol 😂😂😂
Honestly my favourite part of the movie was how the Magikarp evolved after being kicked, which was a reference to the first season of the anime in which Team Rocket James did the same thing with his Magikarp.
16:14: Yeah, but this mindset backfired much and now we have a bunch of topix and/or delusional fans defending Gamefreak and the New Trash-Quality that is Standart. Which is bad. Very bad.
A neat little nostalgia trip is that Jigglypuff in the bar which is a reference to the reoccurring Jigglypuff in the classic pokemon anime which used a marker as a microphone and when it got mad that everyone fell asleep when it was singing It'd puff up and then proceed to draw on everyone's faces as revenge even in the movie the mic marker has the exact same green cap
Killer Kirby it was in the cruise ship episodes where James gets tricked into buying a magicarp which everyone tries to eat (including ash and co but not misty) if I remember correctly after this James kicks it and it evolves and uses dragon rage along with other wild gyarados on everyone, this leads to the island of giant Pokémon episodes
Yeah when me and my family went to theaters to watch Detective Pikachu, the whole theatre laughed for like a minute just from Ryan Reynolds singing the Pokemon theme song. Even my mom and dad were busting a lung in laughter because it was hilarious and they barely know anything about Pokemon.
4:24 this film had a lot of what the remake of the lion king didn't have at all: expressivess and emotion in the cgi characters. also, this movie was actually good.
@@juanrisa945 the key to any good story is connecting to the characters. If they can't show emotion then how are we meant to feel and connect with them?
Bulbasaur has been my favorite since season 1. As a 43 year old man, that scene had me crying in the theater. My daughter was giving me weird looks, but come on!
In the original games, I think I ended up starting with each at some point, but the anime really solidified Bulbasaur as my favorite. It was just such a brave and loyal Pokémon. 😭 I have other favorite starters, but in Kanto that's the necessity for me.
Mewtwo has always been my all-time favorite Pokemon and when I saw it on here, I teared up a little because it looks SO GOOD! All of them do! Pikachu is so CUTE!

It was incredible, the Pokemon acted the way I always thought they should, they fit in to environment really well, and the CGI was breathtaking, the Pokemon felt so real, and didn't look like any... meowing abominations of the universe. All my friends said it was a great time, too, and they're not even Pokemon fans! Overall, 9.5/10, it has faults, but it's still a fantastic movie, and I could watch it over and over and never get tired of it!
If you look closely at that scene when Tim and Pikachu go backstage that squirtle cleaning the stage has a green shell. Its very hard to see, but I'm betting they snuck a suttle shiny in there
1:44 "Even I recognize Red" That is not why I was tripping at this scene. The person playing "Red" here is no other than the actor for Tomari Shinnoske, AKA Kamen Rider Drive. Also of note is that "Red's" Trainer get up is in the same color as Drive's base form Type Speed.
No body talks about this and I feel like it's such a subtle nod to the games that could make everyone laugh. All over the movie you can see people wearing the same outfit, showing their profession. It such a nice nod to the games I don't know how people don't talk about it
I can only imagine the amount of PokeVeterans proudly watching their old partners on the big screen. I, personally, could not be happier for how much Torterra has grown over the years.
They didn't include any of my top 5s in there, being Zoroark, Zygarde, Mimikyu, Decidueye, and Volcarona (not in that order), but I did get all sorts of giddy watching Joltiks crawl around and a Golurk guarding the police precinct.
@@323starlight I think Xerneas it's just that, the creator of living creatures, while in the other hand, Arceus created existence itself. If i remember correctly a PokéDex entry states that Arceus was born of an egg that was floating in nothingness, and then proceeded to create Dialga and Palkia, which represent time and space respectively, so i guess in that universe all began from there, or so states it's mythology.
@@ElaynneWea I guess it's like asking which came first, the chicken or the egg. Cause how can Arceus, a living being, exist before the god of life. But I guess you can say Arceus represents existence itself as a concept.

8:27 Something I love about this screen is that Giratina (the banished one) is not present even though it is one of the box legendarys. This really shows that the makers of this movie actually really know about Pokémon lore.
Yal Rathol well yes and no He’s more like Lucifer(which I’m talking about pre satan)like a fallen angel of source Satan/death would be yveltle(I may of spelled it wrong) The y legendary
The point I was trying to make was that Giratina is an very unknown entity in the pokemon universe. It was banished before humans came into existance and was keept in it's own world away from the rest of existence.
Something you didn’t point out (and this might just be me overthinking things), but when Tim walks into Harold’s office, Giratina ( for those who haven’t played the games Giratina is the closest thing to a Devil figure Pokémon has) is missing from the set of sinnoh legendaries statues, and based on how they were arranged it would have been right where Harold is sitting. I’m not saying that was foreshadowing for some keen eyed fans, but I’m also not not saying that.
damn that is one hell of a catch!, and i do think it was on purpose considering his suit is mostly black. plus, if he knows about the first 3, chances are he knows about the 4th. not to mention all the thought and detail that went into this movie as a whole, the film makers at least did it on purpose.
Also why does Howard go on about Mewtwo being the strongest Pokémon when Arceus’ existence is apparently common enough knowledge for an Amnesic Harry to say his name?
Kyle Campbell Well in the games, Arceus is considered a mythical Pokémon. So maybe everyone in this universe believes there is, was, or might be an Arceus but don’t know for sure if there is one. Kinda like the how Greek Gods were at one point. So when Harold says that Mewtwo is the most powerful Pokémon he probably had an unspoken “that we are aware of” at the end of it.
This movie is one of the best when it comes to world building. I've heard the argument that this movie didn't do any world building because it was done in the games/anime but the world built in the movie feels uniquely its own. World building isn't just about telling us whats in this world, it's also about convincing us that the world is lived in and that there are stories going on outside of the main story.
It is but what’s sad is that just last month the sequel’s script that was announced for this franchise’s next live action movie was cancelled😔😭and scrapped
One underrated thing about worldbuilding is it doesn't have to be explicit (i.e. "told", or discussed by the characters). Worldbuilding can just as easily be given through background details, stage/costume design, etc. (compare reading item descriptions in the Dark Souls series)

I watched this in theaters with my best friend. I know of Pokémon, I could recognize a handful of them, but I'm not a die-hard fan. My friend however, has been obsessed with it since childhood. Watching this movie with her was a gift, because while I was impressed with how well they made the Pokémon look real, she was squealing softly next to me about her favorites being on the screen. The best part? I knew there would be a Flameon, her second favorite Pokémon, in one scene. She didn't. The suppressed squeal she gave made my fricking day ;7;

They shouldn't do a direct sequel to Detective Pikachu. Instead, make a movie about the Mystery Dungeons series with Ryan Reynolds turning into a Pikachu again and HE freaks out about Pokemon talking. He tries to tell others that he was human before and was a famous actor but nobody believes him.
omfg that would be amazing, and it has to be something where it starts with him getting an offer about being in a new pokemon movie, opens up a pokemon game (bc research is something actors do) and then gets sucked it.

Roxanne Roxanne Except Jeremy ignores scenes that explain and thus ruin some of his jokes and then bitches when the movie doesn’t explain something only he thinks needs explaining, makes TERRIBLE jokes about his sex life that have ZERO to do with the films, and puts his actual opinion on the films into some of the sins, like in video on The Greatest Showman. CinemaSins isn’t satire. It’s just two guys making the same lazy-ass jokes and refusing to take criticism to improve their format.

1:44 That's Ryoma Takeuchi, who plays Tim in the Japanese dub of the movie. He's also known for playing a superhero, Kamen Rider Drive- who also happens to be a police detective. One of the cases he solves is his father's murder case. Apparently, some people say that Dark-type (or Evil-type in Japan) being weak to Bug-type is partly because of Kamen Rider, as they are primarily bug-themed superheroes. As an additional side note, Lucy's Japanese VA is Marie Iitoyo, who also played a superhero- she was on Kamen Rider's sister show, Super Sentai, as Kyouryu Violet.

As a guy who grew up playing Pokémon since gen 1, this movie isn't perfect by any means but is such an awesome treat if you're a fan of the franchise. The pocket monsters in this are DROP. DEAD. GORGEOUS.
The twist was somewhat further hidden by, not to put too fine a point on it, racial misdirect. We weren't expecting Tim's father to be white. A similar misdirect was used in Spider-man: Homecoming.
The pokemon dont always look like they're there but the effort and design makes up for that entirely. I love this movie and would love another live action pokemon movie

"Ehhhhh" I will not tolerate Garbodor slander in this house, good sir. Also, the 20 years ago thing can also apply to game lore, since it escaped from cinnabar mansion as well in the main canon. And speaking of mewtwo, can we talk about the fact that it speaks entirely through telepathy right up until it's brain gets hijacked, at which point it starts verbally speaking? Fun Fact: The Red cameo in this movie is played by Ryouma Takeuchi, who also played Kamen Rider Drive in that long-running franchise and did the Japanese dub voice for Tim
This movie decided to be a movie first, respected the lore while telling an original plot not really connected the any main game, and everything else just came together naturally... if only more adaptations took this approach. It really is great when Hollywood just embraces something, rather than mangle it into something it's not. Not only that, even without Pokemon, this would have been a fun family movie regardless as it tells a mostly universal theme. It simply didn't try too hard, but at the same time cared about the quality. A damn fine cup of coffee.

I agreed. Imagine, a movie with some of the legendary pokemon. A part with rayquaza trying to calm down Groudon and Kyogre. A part where it can be seen the struggle of Kyurem for not being whole and going to find his way to Reshiram and Zekrom. Or just plain trainer pokemon going to adventures, then find a evil team doing evil stuff and finally stoping them in a amazing manner. One can dream after all.

That's a really great catch.
Holy crap I totally missed that. That's too good to be a coincidence. Great catch!
Also why does Howard go on about Mewtwo being the strongest Pokémon when Arceus’ existence is apparently common enough knowledge for an Amnesic Harry to say his name?
Kyle Campbell
Well in the games, Arceus is considered a mythical Pokémon.
@@MBJ829 I think it was actually confirmed again a few months ago
One underrated thing about worldbuilding is it doesn't have to be explicit (i.e. "told", or discussed by the characters). Worldbuilding can just as easily be given through background details, stage/costume design, etc. (compare reading item descriptions in the Dark Souls series)

MegaChickenfish notice how there’s only 4, and Ash’s squirtle was the 5th member, so isn’t always there. Correct me if I’m wrong...
They don't have to be the Squirtle Squad, because if you'll remember in the Orange League there's an episode that shows the entire Squirtle line are used as fire fighters in the pokemon world! The poketuber Suede did a video on it recently.
I love that episode

I thought it was just because bugs see in the dark
I'm disappointed at the lack of a mention for RJ Palmer/Arvalis one of the concept artists. Dude has been making realistic Pokemon fan art for years, and they gave him the job of doing it for an actual film. That's dope.
oh HELL YES! I've been following him on Deviantart even before this movie was a concept, I felt really happy to see his art reached all the way to the studios without him even trying.
www.deviantart.com/arvalis
This guy is crazy in the best way possible. I never thought, i would see pokémon, which looks so realistic
uh, are you implying that the guy making this videos knows about any of that?
Full stop, I totally think the ending credits was the best part. I'm not saying the movie was bad, but just the shout out to 90s chonky Pikachu, the characters in that Sugimori art style, it's just amazing.
Yeah. I fell in love with the credits and wanted to see every bit of them.
Chonky boi
Am I the only one who thinks that Justice Smith would be a perfect live-action Miles Morales?
Edit: Slightly older Miles Morales than ITSV's portrayal.
He could do it, I don't see why. Jurrasic World was a crap movie, but it's not like HE wrote it
That could be interesting. I never thought of that.
Nah true....but I gotta say, the charm of the Spiderverse movies is the phenomenal ground breaking animation. Personally, I don't think it needs to go live action.
I always like Grey Worm for miles morales possibly if he was younger
@@Nissim1795 I'm late but yeah. I agree that we don't need a live action spiderverse, it won't be as cool. But Miles Morales will be coming to MCU so 🤷. And with the multiverse more or less sure to come in NWH, Miles will be there ig.
That and they put the twist in front of you the whole time, that it couldn't just be "that" simple...but it was.
It's statistically unlikely
@Mr. Al the grandma could have been his father's mother?
I realized it when I noticed they were going out of their way to show the head of Tim’s dad
@@kylecampbell565 you mean not to?
The pokemon dont always look like they're there but the effort and design makes up for that entirely. I love this movie and would love another live action pokemon movie
For sure, It all came down to Lighting in most scenes!
When He was Holding Pikachu to go Meet Mewtwo, the fur on Pikachu had no added shadows, and on some of the ending Pokemon they had none as well.
But, Still amazing! I do hope we get a Live action based more around the pokemon war, or even just like the videogames!
"Ehhhhh"
I will not tolerate Garbodor slander in this house, good sir. And then there's my favorite obscure lore reference in the movie: the giant Torterra are a reference to one of the sinnoh myths in the canalave library in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.
Soopakoopa64 I mean, he didn’t say it was a bad pokemon, he just said it wasnt cute xP
@Carlos Thadeu And that's exactly the problem. Garbodor is a PRECIOUS TRASH BEAN.

About Pokemon fandom - the few weeks after Pokemon Go came out was the closest we've come to world piece.
mmmmmm yes. Those were the glory days
I legit never felt more safe on the streets at night. I would see groups of people just walking around and playing. I met half my neighborhood that I had never met before. @josue lopez Plus look at the context. Why would the "early" humans catch Pokemon in Gen 4? The earliest Pokemon trainers would've been in Gen 1, on the Game Boy.
@@wesleyoldham-cartoonsandtv1962 Even then, with Legends: Arceus being a thing, Gen 1 wasn't even the "earliest time humans caught Pokemon."

The battle between Gengar and Blastoise is a reference to the opening of Red/Blue, the first Pokemon game.

Or gengar vs jiglypuff in blue.
I'm very surprised that Psyduck didn't get a win. He was honestly one of my favorite parts of the movie
Yeah! I thought he was gonna be annoying, but just like everything else, it was sweet.
Psyduck is a right royal pain in the rear end in the cartoon and this movie.
A reference I really liked was when Pikachu mentioned all a Magikarp needs to evolve into a Gyarados is a little kick, which was a nice call back to the moment in the original season of the anime (from like around episode 20 of the Indigo League season) where James of Team Rocket kicks a Magikarp and it evolves.
That next movie. I've watched that scene/trailer so many times. And I've been counting down to it.
*SHAZAM!*
When we get a full EGA video instead of a 60 second review... “I CANT SEE ME LOVIN NOBODY BUT YOU!”
Me: *Knocks off glasses* "I CAN'T SEE!"
"FOR ALL MY LIFE!!!"
Fun Fact:
The Red cameo in this movie is played by Ryouma Takeuchi, who also played Kamen Rider Drive in that long-running franchise and did the Japanese dub voice for Tim
3:36 I feel like Whimsicott would be the way to go, It can slip through cracks and set up traps for intruders.
Or Ferrothorn because it hangs from ceilings and shoots spike traps at people.
Plot twist: Team Rocket shows up in the sequel, but Meowth looks like the cats from Cats (2019)
That would make it a horror movie.

I overdosed in the fuzzy wuzzy feelings at Psyduck being carried around on Lucy's back in a baby carrier. Psyduck is my favorite pokemo. Especially in the first generation pokemon anime. His spontaneous appearances and demands to fight despite everyone not wanting him to was the highlight of every episode it happened in.
SOMEONE THAT LIKES BULBASAUR FINALLY-
I be up for a Pokémon cinematic universe. A lot of cool and interesting regions with lore. Awesome classic villains and awesome Pokémon to see brought to life I would love
I think one of the best concepts I've heard for a two movie was the first one following Red's journey up until the end when he battles blue and cut before the fight. Then the second one following blue's journey and ending with their battle.
stiffy kitsune it’s in the plans apparently
Yeah I think Lucy could have her own movie

I pray that one day they do a sequel or another live action movie. I wanna see Hisui in this style.
Could be insane if it's Tim that gets isekai-ed back in time, or if it's the protagonist from a Sun n Moon movie
Imagine if they make sequels around different characters dealing with a different legendary Pokemon problem each time.
I had imagined like something Lugia movie was, dealing with the ecologic problems caused by humanity.
It would be a good implicit message for the movie, and Lugia is just so recognizable that they wouldn't even need to make effort on advertising this movie.
