In this episode of Rule Britannia, VICE meets "Saky's Finest"-a gang of young reoffenders based on the Saxton Road estate in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Locked into a cycle of reoffending and going to jail, some of these guys have spent so much of their childhood in Young Offenders' Institutes that they'd rather be back inside than in the real world.
20-year-old Coopz is looking at a serious stretch in adult jail after being recently bailed in connection with the attempted robbery of a local shop. Ross and Nathan, who at 27 are considered the "olders" of the group, both try to stop him from going down the same paths they did.
We also meet Pitts, arguably the most institutionalized member of the gang, who has only seen the outside world for a matter of weeks in the last six years. Now out, he just wants to have fun, get pissed and fight-as well as settling an old score with Reggie, the local store owner, for something that happened 12 years ago.

It’s sad cause I grew up in an environment where we were raised in a way that prepared us to expect to die young or end up in prison......no guidance, no one to point you in the right direction.....these kids are a product of the lack of structure in their lives. In the beginning I didn’t care about serving prison time, it was a badge of honor of sorts.....after serving a 9 and a half year sentence I realized the faults in my way of thinking and made changes and found myself looking back at every time I pretended not to give a fuck with a mind full of regret and shame.
This kids will change once they are middle aged and struggling to find gainful employment.
I hope for their sake they make changes before they waste away the most important years of their lives or lose them all together.
Crime does not pay, it only costs you......your freedom,life and loved ones!

So when I was a teenager in the American northeast in the late '90s, I got reeaally into British music because the shit in our country was such garbage and Britpop was raging. I totally wanted to live in England, and several years later I went to New Zealand, "married" a British citizen and moved to his brother's house in Southampton. Mostly we just didn't want to officially break up because of a visa issue. Within my very first week in the UK, I remember walking through the council estates to the local grocery store, it was a Sainsburys, and I just was like "...Holy shit, this place is a wasteland." It was the most profoundly depressing place I've ever been, you just get the impression there is this great sucking black hole at the center of society and people are filling it with everything and anything they can. You really get the sense that there is this cultural vacuum in the wake of their post-WWII era of greatness and there is this profound sense of "nothing is at the center here." It was such a strange and crushing experience.

I live in oxford which is about 10 mins away from abingdon. Incase you don't know, oxford is one of the most affluent areas in the UK and abingdon is known as a nice little town by the river thames. That scene at the end was so hard to watch. Fighting for no reason? I know people say it's all play but I just can't fathom it. Under all the jokes I'm sure the reality is grim. I hope these young guys find hope for a better life for themselves because they all deserve it.
That was the scene that made me realize that people like this, even though they are biologically human, are pretty much at a 'beast' or animal-like level mentally. See what happened there was what happens quite often in packs of animals with the leader making a point and sending a message as to who's the 'alpha'. The hugging and kissing at the end is the 'you're with the pack, but don't try to take my spot' stuff.

i was born in england and finally left after 32 thankless years. one of the most depressing examples of society is where I grew up: an impoverished area of essex with zero sense of community and respect, where violence is less about gang culture or pride and more about boredom or looking 'cool', with confrontation stemming from pettiness and escalating very quickly to life-changing/threatening/sentencing instances. old acquaintances are in prison for stamping on heads, others beaten to death for being gay.
but you have to remember - these people are part of a forgotten society devoid of decent education and suitable role-models. where i was lucky to have side-stepped, others have fallen through the cracks. where I felt the urge to escape, others hadn't the confidence or opportunity. so send a prayer to these often judged, hopeless delinquents before you laugh about how chavvy they look

Technically you are right. However this line of reasoning is *EXTREMELY* dangerous. Sure a benevolent dictator could sterilize the right people and improve the well being of society. But where are you going to find one of those? They dont exist, no one who is benevolent wants to be a dictator, the good people dont volunteer for that job because good people have no desire to have power over others. Instead what you get are down right evil or at the very least normal corruptible men as the only candidates applying for the position in charge of the institutions that govern and enforce this process. This is a great deal of power you are talking about giving to these people and power invariably corrupts all but those who would reject it anyway if offered it. This extreme power leads to extreme corruption and then to depravity. Please be careful, casually condoning social engineering without putting sufficient thought into the consequences is what has lead to the deaths of hundreds of millions of people in the 20th century alone.

Person who causes harm to society is far more worse than person who doesn't contribute to society, why should he be able to enjoy perks of the society?
I think it is way more sick and irresponsible to constantly put peaceful people at risk by giving reoffender 10th or 11th chance. Also locking someone in jail for 50-70 years is just a form of torture without any practical use. Also we could do massive favor for future generations if we would prevent these people from breeding.
Basically modern moral philosophies in the western world are just this illogical mass of remnant ideas from the past, lacking logic and reasoning. It is just a cultural thing. If change would come we would probably just laugh how silly we were 100 years ago by trying to treat gorillas, reoffenders or fetuses as a people.
Compared to past we have so much more knowledge. It is our _responsibility_, not freedom or luxury, to harness it to do good for the sake of humanity.

I came from an area which was quite "chavy" and people are quick to judge and say "Oh can't they just get a job!" but if you're born into a working class family, it's harder to gain the opportunities in the first place to work yourself up. Chances are, these people were born into families which had history of crime/foster care so they're just going to learn and pick up the same traits. I
The only reason they turn to crime in the first place is the failed system for the working class(Grow up in a poorer background, chances are not alot of educational and job opportunities are going to go down hill)

But they will get older and realise that living their lives like that won't get them the nice car, house and the nicety's of life they see that other people have. I have seen it for myself growing up in Ladywood, Birmingham. Lads being lads who are born into a life with only a mother to support them with very little money and no discipline. They have friends who live the same lives so they hang around together getting up to no good. Something happens and they try to change cause they are starting to grow up mentally. Not all will change but most do.
