Go check out This is England, it's a film that was made recently and is set in the early 80s during the Falklands. It's striking how similar this documentary and that film are, and from a number of people I've chatted and from reviews I've read, that film really hits home for people who grew up through that. Thanks to Maggie's focus on London, and history in general, that city developed quite differently from the rest of the UK. I could be wrong, but that's my impression based academic study and personal interest.

The truest comment on here, I can tell that like me you live amongst this and can see the truth behind it all. How this generation is literally a lost generation. We don't know nothin about our roots all we know is how to create a drama with one another and the happy life seems like the one you have to live through hedonistic activities that lead to addictions and that's the price you pay it's either that or you're miserable like the rest of them. I'm not saying that's the case but that's the general perception of this generation, I just see more and more kids turning into fiends and horrible individuals because it's all lost to drink and drugs. The kids need a new direction because let's face it the old Direction of "go to school, get a job have kids and die" isn't motivating kids anymore not when they can see it from their parents that it's failing them. We need some way to identify what they would like to get out of life and then help them achieve that, rather than keep them in a box and chuck them out every so often.

I was a Deputy Sheriff and Corrections Officer for many years here in the US and we have almost exactly the same things going on. These kids have their river, and my County includes Acadia National Park. Does a certain class of individual appreciate the park as anything but a target for predation? Nope. That's all it is to them. Trash it when they're drunk or pissed off, steal from the tourists or poach when they're semi-sober. Relationships are similar, too. Visiting hours at our jail would often have two or three women visiting the same guy - all of them abused by him, and all of them with a kid by him. They all knew each other, too. All comes down to social background. Most of these low lifes were failed by their parents and by society as they then go to complete the vicious cycle by failing kids they produce before they turn 20. You simply do not know what you talking about I myself as a kid came from a very poor working class family but my parents were very hard on discipline also the value of eduation and hard work was instilled in me from a very early age. I worked really hard at school and excelled despite the odds being greatly against me. I also learned a whole host of other manuel and technical skills. I funded my studies by working part time and doing crappy jobs. Instead of getting drunk and taking drugs I saved my money and always invested it. I am now in the fortunate stuation where I have paid off my mortgage and have sufficient income from my investments so that I do not have to work unless I choose to so so. Basically life is what you put into it if you haveno ambition and drive and do not want to workhard to not expect anything.

The truest comment on here, I can tell that like me you live amongst this and can see the truth behind it all. How this generation is literally a lost generation. These kids have their river, and my County includes Acadia National Park. Does a certain class of individual appreciate the park as anything but a target for predation? Nope. I could buy that, if they were just stealing and doing drugs. There were a lot of affrays, a lot of stabbings, a lot of ABH and GBH mentioned. That's a lot of people getting hurt, from the way they talk about roaming the streets looking for fights and the way they targetted the shopkeeper, you have to assume some of those people they fucked up were innocent. You say they just want a proper life and deserve a chance, consider the proper lives their actions have altered. The average bystander who gets his head kicked in by a gang of chavs, or is stabbed during a mugging, never walks down another street feeling secure as long as they live.

These people have had their chances, once you've committed armed robbery, racially motivated attacks and threatened to murder an innocent mother of two who happens to be the only person to openly try and help you there's no comming back; anyone that merits armed police to raid their home in the UK are not people that "change" despite what they say they're all choosing that lifestyle, they understand the law and society yet fail to conform to its rules... therefor they are making their own bed, the one which they shall lay in.

All comes down to social background. Most of these low lifes were failed by their parents and by society as they then go to complete the vicious cycle by failing kids they produce before they turn 20. In UK you could eliminate this madness in less than a decade, but no one has a will or interest to really do that.

You simply do not know what you talking about I myself as a kid came from a very poor working class family but my parents were very hard on discipline also the value of eduation and hard work was instilled in me from a very early age. I worked really hard at school and excelled despite the odds being greatly against me. I also learned a whole host of other manuel and technical skills. I funded my studies by working part time and doing crappy jobs. Instead of getting drunk and taking drugs I saved my money and always invested it. I am now in the fortunate stuation where I have paid off my mortgage and have sufficient income from my investments so that I do not have to work unless I choose to so so. Basically life is what you put into it if you haveno ambition and drive and do not want to workhard to not expect anything.
