    Damn, son. Almost every time I watch your channel, I end up spending money! I don't know whether to stop watching or talk to my wife first. Oh well, I know I am not going to stop watching. This is timely for me, I have a bunch of small trees sprouting along my driveway at the edge of a pond and this looks like just the ticket. Woo hoo.

    I invented and built the “ log arch “ . I thought I might become very wealthy from it and was very pleased with myself . Soon after , somebody with the internet showed me 1000’s of them ! Bugger ! More than 20 years later my prototype is still in regular use .

    Dad made a T-post extractor using his handyman jack and a large chain link.
    Speaking of handyman jacks, apparently there was one company that had various accessories for theirs including a fence stretcher.

    White Pine won't sprout from a stump when you cut it - it just dies. Pine is not particularly rot resistant, so most of the roots will compost in a year or two. Why bother yanking them up when you can just cut them off? This is true of most trees and shrubs by the way. The only reason I can see for pulling the roots is if you intend to grown a garden or plant some new trees or shrubs, and then you need only pull those that are where you want to dig the hole. Unfortunately Tony doesn't show us how big a root-ball you can reliably pull with this tool. The ones he is pulling are between 1" and 2" diameter I think. White pine would be pretty easy to pull, having fairly shallow roots, but pulling something that has a major tap root like oak or walnut would be very difficult at this size I would say. (A tap root is a single large, long, root descending straight down from the center of the tree trunk. Tony is mistaken: White Pine do not have them). I've seen some pretty cool, unique hand tools for digging up fairly large, established trees to in order to transplant them though, with root-balls up to 48": Tripple Brook Farm:

    I bought one of these a while back to help pull some small cedars. There is a potential hazard when using this tool. When pushing down to remove one of the small cedars, the trunk suddenly snapped. This resulted in my body suddenly goiing down towards the ground. However my head did not keep up and was jerked backwards relative to my body.. Essentially a whiplash type situation. Fortunately no injury was sustained from this sudden movement. Just something to be aware of.when using this tool.

      Sad truth is that could happen if you were trying to pull out a small tree and it snapped sending you falling backwards.

      That's not on the tool. That's on you.
      Did you ever try to break free a stubborn lug nut, only to have it suddenly give way and send your knuckles and body smashing into the pavement? Yeah, there is a potential hazard when using a wrench. We learn to brace ourselves when applying a great force so that we can minimize or avoid a violent follow through when something gives way.
      Thank you for sharing what you painfully learned so that others may learn without the pain. However, pain is the most common and effective teacher.

    • @googacct
      @googacct Місяць тому

      @@davidsnyder3799 I think for most people, if you are pulling back on something you are prepared for the possibility that you could fall back. The usual stance is to make sure one leg is behind the other in case you fall backwards.
      The situation of rapping your knuckles using a tire iron generally happens much closer to the ground.
      For the situation I was in, my body was between two and three feet above the ground. A much larger distance to suddenly lurch forward and cause my head to snapback the way it did.
      It is also a failure mode that I expect a lot of people may not anticipate and also probably can't brace themselves for compared to a pulling back situation.
      It is situation that people need to be aware of when using the tool.
