    I enjoy hand filling in a vise on bench. I do the rotary tool for onsite sharpening. I started grinding this year. I think it probably as good as anything. I pack 2 saw so normally don’t sharpen on location. Keep up the good work.

    • @TonysCoolTools
      @TonysCoolTools  8 місяців тому +1

      Dan I’m like you and take 2 or 3 saws so I don’t have to sharpen in the field unless I hit multiple obstacles (rocks or metal). Nothing like hand filing once you get proficient at it.

    Dremel may be the most popular for homeowners, hand file or grinders are what most experienced cutters that I run across are using. Might want to mention rakers/depth dont know why it appeared you were getting more dust then chips.

    • @TonysCoolTools
      @TonysCoolTools  8 місяців тому

      Yup pro’s definitely would use a file or bench grinder.

    I like the Stihl 2-in-1. It provides a consistently sharp chisel while cutting the raker at the same time. I am often in the woods, cutting fallen trees on the ground. Try as I might, I sometimes ground the saw; other times I hit a rock or barbed wire hidden with a tree. I carry a 2-in-1 in my tool bag and can refresh the chain on the back of my ATV in a few minutes. And, any rotating device I have used ends up heating some of the chisels and they don't seem to maintain an edge as long thereafter. In short, you will have to pry the 2-in-1 out of my cold, dead hands. Well, maybe a bit extreme.

    When I needed a new chain for my saw I just ended up buying a new one. I added up the cost for sharpening tools and it was more than the cost of a new chain. Just don’t use my saw often enough to buy the sharpening tools.
    I didn’t have a good experience with that type of knife sharpening tool. I do love my “ Work Sharp Ken Onion Edition Knife & Tool Sharpener”. It works super good
    Have fun on your trip 👍🏻

      Bit of a learning curve but many start out with nothing more than a $2 file, if the chain is so dull that you're throwing it out what is the worse that can happen other than spending $2 and a bit of time.

    I bought one of the file n joint ones about a year ago. I got it to true up my chains after every 3-4 free hand sharpenings.
    While it does while it does a pretty fair job, mine doesn't keep the left and right teeth the same length on 3/8 or .325 chain so I have to adjust the screw for the length in our out and then that makes the file height slightly different.
    Also have to have the chain pretty tight when using it or the cutters roll back some which changes file depth ect. So sadly I don't use it much. Maybe this grinder one would be a little better but I haven't had a user friendly experience with mine.

      Are you trying to use the same file size on both sizes of chain.🤨

      Good question but no. 7/32 file for the 3/8 and 3/16 file for the .325 chain.
      The granberg will get chains nice and sharp when I use it but it's just enough of a pain I rarely get it out.

      Sam thanks for sharing your experience. I’m going to keep an eye on the File-n-Joint I have to see if I have the same issue.

    Hi, thanks for the video on using an electric sharpener. What do you use to set the rakers or does your machine deal with that and I managed to miss it?

      I normally just use a flat file and gauge to lower my rakers. Typically after every third sharpening I lower the rakers .
      Hope you have a happy, healthy and safe new year!

    Of course your pushing the over 100 dollar electric grinder versus the manual. Go figure
    I’ll stick to the manual 106b

      For me I’m always looking what will give me the quickest results.
      Without a doubt the electric is faster but as I mentioned there is a manual version.
      Whatever your pocketbook will allow is the one you should go with.
