Same. For many of the weapons they just need to increase base damage. The armors are a bit more complicated, but adding cool skills to them would make them sought after.
So many times ive found messerschmidt’s reaver, executioners justice, ghostflame, stormspire, steelshade etc. that i ended up charsing. Wish they had more umph for how hard they are to find would be great if they could update. Also items like giant conch, vortex orb, colossus girdle that have no uniques tied to them would be nice to add a bit more
Problem is that most items are pretty much useless, though they have the coolest names. They should rethink stats in most items to make them relevant to the game and therefore having more diversity in the game, but won´t happen lol
I’d like them to bring back a lot of these. Most of these items aren’t even picked up anymore. More item diversity in uniques would be a great focus of a future patch.

Well, thanks to the almighty power ramp issue being omnipresent instead of just adding diversity with more uniques we're just about screwed unless the devs start trying to make moves many of the newer players may not like.
@@itsmikehayden i dont want to say nerf the runewords cause the trolls will come out of the woodworks, but you could easily buff the TC 85-87 uniques to be within a similar power range. Stormlash is incredibly cool weapon that basically gives you splash damage where no other melee weapon really does, but it just needs to ahve its base damage upped. Stormspire could have conviction. Youd have to buff all the armors to holy hell to catchup to fortitude though, i havent quite figured that one out yet other than jamming auras and unique effects on them.
That 1.08 gaze was deadly.. it was awesome that they left versions that were existing alone and only updated the most recent of drops after the patch.. this is great content my friend
That's how they've always done it, except when LoD launched, some items changed names, and slight damage change on some weapons. Well, except for 1.07 and 1.08 ethereal weapons, which were made significantly stronger.

I've been saying since D2R beta that 1.08 items should have a low chance to roll, should those corresponding items drop in game. When a Shako drops, you should have a chance for it to roll as the 1.08 version, same with A. Valor, and other items. That would be something that would really incentivize ladder play.
I think it would be great if they allowed all versions to drop. The objectively more powerful versions being much more rare. Or maybe a super expensive cube recipe to bring the item back in time.

The idea of having two or more variations of some of the most popular items is amazing to me. Your example of having a Shako drop that can have seperate mods from others would drastically switch up trading values, meta builds, etc etc. I LOVE THIS IDEA!!!

Are you sure That azurewrath was .08? I'm pretty sure it was available in .09 as well before they added new runewords in 1.10 (I still have this azurewrath crystal sword on useast)
We used to patch our d2 and find these items, then forward the char to the current version, and transfer them over to our sp/open battlenet chars for pvp. Check out some of the 1.0 items, I would love to see what happens when a big community explores the possibilities for builds, as despite our great effort, I don't think this subject is fully explored.
As far as I remember for a very, very brief period (may even have been on the PTR only) BK ring used to be +2 to all skills. However the feedback was that it just blows any other ring out of the water so it was reverted back to +1. Also, congrats on the 50K, friend. Many more to come.

My Azurewrath sword was my favorite early game melee weapon for new characters. Between the change and account inactivity deletion, it's been long gone. =/
i personally would prefer uniques to be better than the runewords. i like the idea and the presence of runewords, but i find it so much more sexy to have a super rare unique to be better than a runeword. to boost some uniques would bring so much new diversity to builds, it would be crazy awesome > like TYRAELS to be the better enigma or an alternative, boost MANGSONGs, Lidless wall to be competable with a monarch spirit, boost the sets like griswolds and so on...
I recently lost ALL my lod gear because I logged in JUST TWO DAYS after the 90 day mark and I lost everything... which was a lot . I had an 08 vamps, fort of chains, zod bugged eth last wish berserker, and much more.... I chugged a lot of beers that day
Orb used to wreck with no cast delay, you held down the right mouse button and the screen froze and the whole screen was lit with ice shards. You could shoot a row of orbs super fast, so cool. Not balanced, but fun.
This video made me think about if there should be any new balance changes. I think spirit needs to be nerfed, it’s too good too early and adds to the already large gap between caster and melee classes
I would really like the rarest items to at a minimum have niche uses. So, I would hope that they could update these items to be more fun and create niche builds.
Ahhhh I remember after 1.09 any Unid wf could go for 40 3/20/20’s. Was crazy how currency changed from sojs to 3/20/20’s. This is when I switched back to classic and rare items ruled the game
.08 Saracens chance had 3% chance of level 5 amp dmg. That’s less than the 5% on Atmas, but (dunno if this still happens or was patched) Atmas seemed to cancel out a volley when it cast, the Saracens didn’t. Got my hands on one in .09 and used on a Strafer and killed lots of cows.
or maybe even a shield, make like a cham + zod + 2x low runes and just give this shield the things the runes gives you and +1 teleport and nothing else. There is a massive issue in d2 that jah and ber is used in basically every high end runeword except for hoto and cta
Oh, I have so many of those on single player. Because nothing really stops you from playing D2 with whatever patch, as long as it's the old version. I even have pre-LOD stuff where rare boots could get +19 strength, 20FHR, 119% gold find, and there were sooo few shit stats like +2 fire damage. Also, in 1.07, there were no ele damage charms, but the physical damage was NUTS. That has also been changed. On a grand charm, you could get +20 from prefix AND +20 more from suffix. Small charms had "just" +6 from either, I believe, but could have 6 all res or 12 single res. Jewels were total crap, and super super rare. 3 affixes on rares in 1.07, which was upped to SIX in 1.08, then down to the 4 we're used to in the next patch. Jewels in 1.07 are super valuable, since they're needed for crafting. Any grade gem, even chipped, works. However - due to a bug, the item level of the rune, NOT the base item is used when making the output ilvl calculation, which goes clvl*.66 + ilvl*.66 - This usually resulted in item level 65 max with a lvl 99 char, since runes don't have item levels.... or do they? We discovered fairly recently that runes DO have ilvls, but it is not saved when you exit the game. Which means, to get a high level output, you have to craft in the same game where you find the rune, which is sort of a pain. However, crafts could get magic-only affixes, and 3 sockets from Larzuk.... I recommend doing a few image searches for 1.07 craft and the pre-lod rares - some stunning items which would be BIS even today.
Runewords concept is truly awesome. The problem is in some of them being at least significantly overpowred. If only they could nerf the biggest offenders like grief or enigma, that alone would bring back the forgotten sets, uniques from the grave. Perhaps several more set bumps, for stuff like berserker gear, chatan, tankred, shazabi, bul khatos (imagine allowing a5 merc to wield two swords), disciple, heaven brethen, etc. Even minor addons like boosting all the set weapons which have tendency of being underpowered, or lowering lvl req from things like aldur plate armor
I remember the days when wf was pretty much THE item you could have. It was so rare that you almost never saw anyone having a windforce while everyone was looking for this bow.

the 08 valks was so op in 2009ish i had a perm one i used on my ww hybrid sin and would switch and use it on my bone spear necro. Not to mention the Valk just looks OP when equiped.
5:30 - In 1.10 beta BK ring was +2 skills btw. Ofc none of them existed on live servers and they were available only on PTR and single palyer but still an interesting fact.
I hope devs would take the time to update some of the most rarest non runeword items and make them fresh. I got this one looming idea for long now. How about add cube recipe to make any no-runeword item indestructible. Yes unique, rares, magic you name it all indestructible for expensive cube recipe like Zod + Zod + Soj?
Thanks for showing that Tyraels. I had the same discussion with a friend. Tyrael should have 1 Skill & Teleport on it and not just be a collectors items with noone wearing it. If you find an item so rare, it should be rewarded. To enhance versatility in general, we could discuss about other items / runewords haveing the ability for Teleport. The Elite-Sets should be adjusted aswell. Aldurs Set is shit for every type of Druid. This Set could at least come with some Extra Skills for Summoning (like +4 - 5). And all Sets should contain some 100-150 Mf if worn with all setitems. Another idea: Mavina's could be completetd with optional a Bow or Spear/Javs and become a Set for Hybrid Build.
Substituting one insanely overpowered item for another isn’t a net win though, it just makes power creep even worse. Tyraels should be good, sure, but I think Enigma should be nerfed for the sake of build diversity
@cooley My suggestion; instead of buffing/ nerfing by mods, add a random socket roll to underused uniques. Without unlimited access to high runes and jewels the meta thus doesn't change, for low level the added sockets create ability to customize/ buff, for PVP and end game the customization options are endless meaning runewords may no longer be the only option. It also boost the economy since runes and jewels gain value as well as currently discarded uniques. As for random socket roll; blizzard should define per item what the max sockets would be that item should need to be viable versus the current meta. when dropped the item then rolls between 0 to that maximum of sockets. This means a perfect socket roll will still be somewhat rare and picking up unpopular uniques to check the socket roll becomes fun again. All in all, adds a lot of fun without the risk of a shift but not necessarily an improvement of meta. Imagine for example a 3 sockets GF, 2 socket skullders, 3 socket lightsaber, 3 socket baranar's star, 3 socket eaglehorn, who knows maybe even a 6 socket swordguard or 4 socket blackloak luna. And all this without introducing a new mechanic/ item to the game which becomes a Currency on its own, like for example Worldstone Shards are for PD2. Eventually they become like runes/Annis/torches, and in my view that is not the objective especially since that would mean they could also be applied to already top level gear like Shako, which is undesirable
I wish blizzard would rework ALL elite and exceptional items that no one uses. Create 3 different variants of each item and let the community vote on one. Example, make Grand father's able to be ethereal with added stats. Or Azure blade able to cast static shock on hit.

I'm currently using Azurewrath as one of my whirlwind barb's two weapons. The added cold and magic damage make it so physical immunes don't bother him.

Runewords totally overpower any of the available uniques even from 1.08. it would be an extremely interesting holiday event to allow them to drop in ladder and just watch how many people come out of the woodwork

Would love to see a "retro" ladder season where some of the (back then) uber items are brought back. Could see how they stack up against modern runewords. I feel this would kind of break non-ladder at the end of the season tho since they will then be super hard or expensive for NL people to get. Could have some of them not transfer to NL, and just dissapeared or revert to their patched versions. I think d2r is being handled very well but this feels a little bit too fun and crazy for them to actually do it.
Man I miss the old Azurewrath. When I quit for a bit and came back I was baffled about its new stats the first time I found one. Had no idea that it was changed.

They need to make a knockoff enigma. I'll accept even negative stats if I get the ability to teleport with my pally. 4 socket armor and make it require a Lo, ist, vex and amn or something. That way it's difficult to get but not a royal pain in the ass requiring 2 extremely rare runes. Not to mention it'll ease the cost of Jah's and Ber's so we can put them in other things if we need it. The damage reduction alone on ber is excellent for a merc helm alongside an infinity. Last wish is also ridiculously expensive too (I will grant that it adds considerable damage and abilities for that price though)
Out of all of these, they need to fix Bartuc the most. The devs kinda screwed over the sin martial arts builds. In legacy, a fully geared, high level Martial Arts sin was hardly ever used. Anyone that used them will say that they were not very efficient in hell difficulty compared to the other character builds of the same level. It was all about trap sins which sucked because they were just laying traps that used sorc skills. It was like lightning sorc #2. I feel the devs were very lazy when they made the sin. It seems like they just tossed some stuff together real quick to get an extra character in there.
I don’t think blizzard devs have the ABILITY to change any of these things today. As in the high school interns working from their basement don’t have the necessary programming skills.
It's irritating that rare drops like Windforce, The Grandfather, Storm Shield or Tyrael's Might don't add value to any builds and are only sought after for the Holy Grail... I've found 2 SS and 1 WF. I was excited at first, but the excitement wore off quickly when I realised how useless they are. Make top unique items great again!
What I miss is my over powered Amazon with”Occy” rings, and the legendary “Whites” hacked items hahaha! Man we’re those hacked items stupidly over powered! Anyone else remember those days/ those hacked items? I still remember when my friend was one of the first to have been able to create those “Occy” rings and “Whites” items, I believe we traded those items for a full trading window of legit SOJ’s if I recall correctly. Does anyone remember the exact details behind some of those hacked items back in 1.08?
Good memories! So many interesting but barely useful items out there, that if just tweaked a little bit could open for lots of experimentation! But D2 has had 20 years of evolving meta
i think that it will be cool to have multiple variations of the same unique item the same way that there is 2 sacred armours they can just make them 3 variations same goes for all other items. Or they can make an event like in D3 that goes to D1 or smt similar so you will get an unique chance to obtain older versions of these items why not even include D1 items just for collectibles it will be nice if they go with different look/skin as well.
I think they should incorporate either a new rune word or update some rare uniques to have access to teleport as a skill. Say for instance that you add it as an oskill to Tyreals Might. That’s probably more rare than Ber+Jah (?) Would make it a chase item with proper use if the rest of the stats also was addressed. Enigma is OP but necessary by now. Wouldn’t mind seeing Teleport as an oskill on rare items as well, but it needs to be really rare! Maybe only spawning on ethereal rares? Then you either need a Zod, rare as it is, it also ups the level requirement, or risk having the item break. Imagine having Teleport spawn on a sub lvl 30 Eth self rep high defense armor😂😮 LLD OP deluxe!
Back in the day, 1X SOJ was only 5X Pskulls. All gems were worth a LOT more initially. High tier Necros used Umes, vamp gaze, and bone spread was a huge damage source along with bone spirit

As an veteran player I would love to see the oldschool GG items have some kind of buff to be useful again, when runewords came out theese insanely rare items became useless and now they are only "trophy" sitting in ur stash to remind you that you could prob get something worth thousands of fg rather then an extremly rare item worth basically 0. The only item I can think of today that still serves a purpose and is expensive is an eth templars ( I actually found one in D2R, finding an eth sacred armor unique is more rare then Tyraels.) but it has to roll high ed or +2 skill if not probably Charsi.

Buffing some of the insanely rare uniques to compete with RW's would be awesome. I wonder what a 'No Runeword' season would look like.
They should do a ladder season where some 08 items can drop but are rare, like getting azurewrath instead of lightsaber

Skill mechanics changed a lot too… I miss piercing guided arrow
If they gave an armor +1 to teleport without it being enigma, that would be the biggest way to change the meta imo.
or maybe even a shield, make like a cham + zod + 2x low runes and just give this shield the things the runes gives you and +1 teleport and nothing else.
There is a massive issue in d2 that jah and ber is used in basically every high end runeword except for hoto and cta

Oh, I have so many of those on single player. Because nothing really stops you from playing D2 with whatever patch, as long as it's the old version. I even have pre-LOD stuff where rare boots could get +19 strength, 20FHR, 119% gold find, and there were sooo few shit stats like +2 fire damage. Also, in 1.07, there were no ele damage charms, but the physical damage was NUTS. That has also been changed. On a grand charm, you could get +20 from prefix AND +20 more from suffix. Small charms had "just" +6 from either, I believe, but could have 6 all res or 12 single res. Jewels were total crap, and super super rare. 3 affixes on rares in 1.07, which was upped to SIX in 1.08, then down to the 4 we're used to in the next patch.
Jewels in 1.07 are super valuable, since they're needed for crafting. Any grade gem, even chipped, works. However - due to a bug, the item level of the rune, NOT the base item is used when making the output ilvl calculation, which goes clvl*.66 + ilvl*.66 - This usually resulted in item level 65 max with a lvl 99 char, since runes don't have item levels.... or do they?
We discovered fairly recently that runes DO have ilvls, but it is not saved when you exit the game. Which means, to get a high level output, you have to craft in the same game where you find the rune, which is sort of a pain. However, crafts could get magic-only affixes, and 3 sockets from Larzuk....
I recommend doing a few image searches for 1.07 craft and the pre-lod rares - some stunning items which would be BIS even today.
Runewords concept is truly awesome. The problem is in some of them being at least significantly overpowred.
If only they could nerf the biggest offenders like grief or enigma, that alone would bring back the forgotten sets, uniques from the grave.
Perhaps several more set bumps, for stuff like berserker gear, chatan, tankred, shazabi, bul khatos (imagine allowing a5 merc to wield two swords), disciple, heaven brethen, etc.
Even minor addons like boosting all the set weapons which have tendency of being underpowered, or lowering lvl req from things like aldur plate armor
I remember the days when wf was pretty much THE item you could have. It was so rare that you almost never saw anyone having a windforce while everyone was looking for this bow.

5:30 - In 1.10 beta BK ring was +2 skills btw. Ofc none of them existed on live servers and they were available only on PTR and single palyer but still an interesting fact.
I hope devs would take the time to update some of the most rarest non runeword items and make them fresh.
I got this one looming idea for long now. How about add cube recipe to make any no-runeword item indestructible. Yes unique, rares, magic you name it all indestructible for expensive cube recipe like Zod + Zod + Soj?
Thanks for showing that Tyraels. I had the same discussion with a friend. Tyrael should have 1 Skill & Teleport on it and not just be a collectors items with noone wearing it. If you find an item so rare, it should be rewarded. To enhance versatility in general, we could discuss about other items / runewords haveing the ability for Teleport.
The Elite-Sets should be adjusted aswell. Aldurs Set is shit for every type of Druid. This Set could at least come with some Extra Skills for Summoning (like +4 - 5). And all Sets should contain some 100-150 Mf if worn with all setitems.
Another idea: Mavina's could be completetd with optional a Bow or Spear/Javs and become a Set for Hybrid Build.
Substituting one insanely overpowered item for another isn’t a net win though, it just makes power creep even worse. Tyraels should be good, sure, but I think Enigma should be nerfed for the sake of build diversity
@cooley My suggestion; instead of buffing/ nerfing by mods, add a random socket roll to underused uniques. Without unlimited access to high runes and jewels the meta thus doesn't change, for low level the added sockets create ability to customize/ buff, for PVP and end game the customization options are endless meaning runewords may no longer be the only option. It also boost the economy since runes and jewels gain value as well as currently discarded uniques. As for random socket roll; blizzard should define per item what the max sockets would be that item should need to be viable versus the current meta. when dropped the item then rolls between 0 to that maximum of sockets. This means a perfect socket roll will still be somewhat rare and picking up unpopular uniques to check the socket roll becomes fun again. All in all, adds a lot of fun without the risk of a shift but not necessarily an improvement of meta. Imagine for example a 3 sockets GF, 2 socket skullders, 3 socket lightsaber, 3 socket baranar's star, 3 socket eaglehorn, who knows maybe even a 6 socket swordguard or 4 socket blackloak luna. And all this without introducing a new mechanic/ item to the game which becomes a Currency on its own, like for example Worldstone Shards are for PD2. Eventually they become like runes/Annis/torches, and in my view that is not the objective especially since that would mean they could also be applied to already top level gear like Shako, which is undesirable

life per level isnt a base boost - it isnt affected by % life increases. neither is vitality per level or just vitality
I wish blizzard would rework ALL elite and exceptional items that no one uses. Create 3 different variants of each item and let the community vote on one. Example, make Grand father's able to be ethereal with added stats. Or Azure blade able to cast static shock on hit.

Runewords totally overpower any of the available uniques even from 1.08. it would be an extremely interesting holiday event to allow them to drop in ladder and just watch how many people come out of the woodwork

Would love to see a "retro" ladder season where some of the (back then) uber items are brought back. Could see how they stack up against modern runewords. I feel this would kind of break non-ladder at the end of the season tho since they will then be super hard or expensive for NL people to get. Could have some of them not transfer to NL, and just dissapeared or revert to their patched versions.
I think d2r is being handled very well but this feels a little bit too fun and crazy for them to actually do it.

Small suggestion if you're open to it, when comparing items sometimes the old version was shown on the left of the screen and sometimes on the right. It would be easier to understand if the position was consistent :)
They need to make a knockoff enigma. I'll accept even negative stats if I get the ability to teleport with my pally. 4 socket armor and make it require a Lo, ist, vex and amn or something. That way it's difficult to get but not a royal pain in the ass requiring 2 extremely rare runes. Not to mention it'll ease the cost of Jah's and Ber's so we can put them in other things if we need it. The damage reduction alone on ber is excellent for a merc helm alongside an infinity. Last wish is also ridiculously expensive too (I will grant that it adds considerable damage and abilities for that price though)
Out of all of these, they need to fix Bartuc the most. The devs kinda screwed over the sin martial arts builds. In legacy, a fully geared, high level Martial Arts sin was hardly ever used. Anyone that used them will say that they were not very efficient in hell difficulty compared to the other character builds of the same level. It was all about trap sins which sucked because they were just laying traps that used sorc skills. It was like lightning sorc #2. I feel the devs were very lazy when they made the sin. It seems like they just tossed some stuff together real quick to get an extra character in there.
I don’t think blizzard devs have the ABILITY to change any of these things today. As in the high school interns working from their basement don’t have the necessary programming skills.
It's irritating that rare drops like Windforce, The Grandfather, Storm Shield or Tyrael's Might don't add value to any builds and are only sought after for the Holy Grail... I've found 2 SS and 1 WF. I was excited at first, but the excitement wore off quickly when I realised how useless they are. Make top unique items great again!
What I miss is my over powered Amazon with”Occy” rings, and the legendary “Whites” hacked items hahaha! Man we’re those hacked items stupidly over powered!
Anyone else remember those days/ those hacked items? I still remember when my friend was one of the first to have been able to create those “Occy” rings and “Whites” items, I believe we traded those items for a full trading window of legit SOJ’s if I recall correctly.

Good memories! So many interesting but barely useful items out there, that if just tweaked a little bit could open for lots of experimentation! But D2 has had 20 years of evolving meta

i think that it will be cool to have multiple variations of the same unique item the same way that there is 2 sacred armours they can just make them 3 variations same goes for all other items. Or they can make an event like in D3 that goes to D1 or smt similar so you will get an unique chance to obtain older versions of these items why not even include D1 items just for collectibles it will be nice if they go with different look/skin as well.
I would like them to buff some useless really rare items to compete with rune words.

I think they should incorporate either a new rune word or update some rare uniques to have access to teleport as a skill. Say for instance that you add it as an oskill to Tyreals Might. That’s probably more rare than Ber+Jah (?) Would make it a chase item with proper use if the rest of the stats also was addressed.
Enigma is OP but necessary by now.
Wouldn’t mind seeing Teleport as an oskill on rare items as well, but it needs to be really rare! Maybe only spawning on ethereal rares? Then you either need a Zod, rare as it is, it also ups the level requirement, or risk having the item break.

Back in the day, 1X SOJ was only 5X Pskulls. All gems were worth a LOT more initially.
High tier Necros used Umes, vamp gaze, and bone spread was a huge damage source along with bone spirit

As an veteran player I would love to see the oldschool GG items have some kind of buff to be useful again, when runewords came out theese insanely rare items became useless and now they are only "trophy" sitting in ur stash to remind you that you could prob get something worth thousands of fg rather then an extremly rare item worth basically 0.
The only item I can think of today that still serves a purpose and is expensive is an eth templars ( I actually found one in D2R, finding an eth sacred armor unique is more rare then Tyraels.) but it has to roll high ed or +2 skill if not probably Charsi.
