  • Опубліковано 20 лис 2018
  • Directed by: Jon S. Baird
    Screenplay by: Jeff Pope
Starring: Steve Coogan, John C. Reilly, Nina Arianda, Shirley Henderson
Laurel & Hardy, one of the world’s great comedy teams, set out on a variety hall tour of Britain in 1953. Diminished by age and with their golden era as the kings of Hollywood comedy now behind them, they face an uncertain future. As the charm and beauty of their performances shines through, they re-connect with their adoring fans.
The tour becomes a hit, but Stan & Ollie can’t quite shake the specter of Laurel and Hardy’s past; the long-buried ghosts, coupled with Oliver’s failing health, start to threaten their precious partnership. A portrait of the most tender and poignant of creative marriages, they are aware that they may be approaching their swan song, trying to rediscover just how much they mean to each other.

Fun Fact when I went with my parents me and my brother were the only kids who were there. The theatre was filled with the older generation but no kids. I and my brother were the only 12 and 7 years old (at the time I'm older now) and it was a strange but cool experience. Especially since a couple of the people asked us if we actually knew who the people were and we could name the countless movies we watched with my father and other tidbits of facts we learned of the comedy duo. It was then that I realized how lucky I was to have a dad who was obsessed with the famous people that ruled the 1900s. He might be older than most peoples dad when their a kid and he might have grey hair and wrinkles but that doesn't mean he isn't any less than a dad. Thanks for introducing me to Oliver Hardy/Stanley Laurel, The three Stooges, Eddie Cantor, Charlie Chaplin, The Honeymooners, etc. You truly were the best

Wow. Whoever you are, thanks for this comment. You kind of made my night with it. I’m an older guy at 42 and my lady who’s 12 years younger is starting to talk to me a lot about having a child. Your comment helps me to be less afraid of being an older dad.

A wonderful film. Really good performances of two of the biggest comics ever. Their touching friendship beautifully portrayed. Long before Abbot and Castello, or Martin and Lewis, there was "Laurel and Hardy" ! Comic geniuses in timing and laughter. I've loved them ever since I was a kid and I was born in 1945. May they keep God laughing ! 💙

Just been to see this film- dear lord absolute kudos to Coogan and Reilly. So many people have 'had a go' at portraying the genius of Stan and Ollie and always came up short. These two actors became them. I cried involuntarily many times during the film at the pathos of it all. I'm 66 and was expecting to be tutting internally at another failed attempt - none of it. If , like me, you love Stan and Ollie see this film. The actresses portraying the wives were brilliantly cast as well. A must.

    • @Dustshoe
      @Dustshoe 5 років тому +2

Joe Morris I agree. The wives in the movie are very interesting, entertaining, and have both personality and sensitivity in spades. I think they hold each other's hand in a tense moment in a theatre scene. The film was unexpectedly quite moving, particularly towards the end and the end of the road, touring-wise, for L&H. It was the end of an era. And the two of them were going out not on film but on stage, where it all began, just ahead of the advent of television. I think Groucho Marx said comedy is the hardest thing to get right in acting. There are no second takes on stage. My feeling was, when looking at them dance their Way Out West jig at movie's end, and we see only their silhouettes from behind in the bright stage lights, with the full house somewhere beyond, my feeling was at that moment in my seeing L&H as flesh and blood individuals who had a job to do. And it was a much needed and honourable job in making themselves universally appealing by making people laugh. How people needed laughter then! And how much we miss that sincerity to universally appeal in today's world!
There are people still alive today who knew L&H. They're very old. And soon they will kick the bucket. Die! I hope they get to watch this. Dick Van Dyke of Mary Poppins fame who is still going knew Stan. For instance.

Perfect timing, 100 per cent talent comprising not only comedy but musical, writing and direction, physical comedy expression beyond amazing and a respect and professional code of honor for their craft sorely lacking today. Just watched this movie after my brother told me how good it was. When I heard that
Steve Coogan was playing Stan, my immediate thought was, I can't imagine him playing
Stan Laurel. But, I have to say, he played the part really well, he had all of Stan's facial
expressions off too a tee. And, John C Reilly was absolutely Brilliant as Oliver Hardy.
They should team up and do some remakes of those old Laurel & Hardy films. This
movie is well worth a watch for any fan of their movies. Brilliant.

This is a sublime touchingly-made film about this much loved duo in the autumn of their careers and lives. The acting is spookily accurate and within the first minute or so of settling into the film you actually forget you are watching impressionists and not the real thing. For decades I have cried laughing whilst watching this pair's films but I have never actually cried watching Laurel & Hardy....until today. The highlight of the film for me was the 'Trail Of The Lonesome Pine' sketch which they did in its entirety; you just want to sing along. Watch out also for The Wives who are a double act in themselves; the film goes up a gear when they arrive.

All this years I was unaware of such a heartbreaking journey they've gone through. Thank You Sony Pictures Classic for bringing my favourite childhood friends back to me and showing what they suffered to bring happiness to our lives. Laurel & Hardy RIP. We loved you and we will always remember you. I love almost every one of them, from the early silents such as "We faw down", "Big business", "Habeus corpus", and "Liberty" to the 1930s talkie shorts such as "County hospital", "We come clean", "Them thar hills", and "The music box" (the trunk sliding down the stairs in this preview did a great impression of the piano sliding down the stairs in the short), to feature films such as "Way out west", "Blockheads", "Flying dueces", and "Saps at sea". They are all great!! I have got to see this biography of them. I will watch it within the next day

This movie is a contrast between fiction and reality. It addresses to the audience the sweet and hardened journey the two comedians had to go through together; A world tour promoting more of their comedy acts performed to a live audience with a much more deeper iceberg behind this world tour. This involves Stan and Ollie's long and old friendship or even the future for the characters Laurel & Hardy.
It was a wild ride. This movie reveals a much more darker side and I recommend anyone to watch this. You get to learn more of what wasn't shown to the public.. Absolutely extraordinary.

There is something interesting now in that in the film Stan and Ollie have an argument, whereas I saw an interview with Stan Laurel and he said in all the years they worked together they never had one cross word.
