      icecream is nice It's not and will never be a "piece of s**t" to me. I love this film, and I truly have legitimate, genuine reasons why. I'm sorry, and I know I shouldn't be bothered by this, but it seriously IRKS me whenever G-Fans call this film a 'piece of s**t.' I find it very derogatory. And it's been 18 years since it came out, so when I see G-Fans describing the film like this, it comes across to me as very SAD because it's like the Godzilla fan base as a whole STILL hasn't gotten over its collective disappointment over this film, EVEN in the wake of Gareth Edward's film. 😔

    I love the fact that you used the theme music from The Godzilla Millennium series of movies and tied them into the '98 movie for the end sequence and used the roars of the 90's Godzilla, 60's Godzilla, and 2014 Godzilla instead of using the roar from the '98 movie.
    All in all I agree with your determinations about the movie. I myself am a fan of the movie, but I also don't view it a Godzilla movie, it was however one of the few Kaiju films that actually gave a great sense of scale to the monsters. I just view it mindless fun, sort of popcorn for the mind. Although I think that if it had been called anything else it might have been redeemable.
    By the way, do you have a retrospective review for Godzilla Returns/Godzilla 1985? It's one of my favorite movies of all time, and in my opinion (which I will admit is not popular with other G fans) the best of the franchise, and I would like to know your opinions on it.

  • @Kingpaci123

    i have to admit i still preferred how this godzilla looked when compared to the new one. Its body structure is one of the main reasons. Irrespective of grapshics the 1998 godzilla was far more realistic ( having a similar body type to that of a T Rex). Its body type ascetically forced the audience to focus on its face. Its jaw seemed larger and more powerful then the new godzillas ( taking into accounts size difference.) Although i do admit that the 1998 lacked any real emotion. The body structure of the 1998 in all looked alot more aggressive and intimidating. My only complaint about him was that he lacked emotion and he wasnt large enough (height.) The new one on the other hand i had difficulty with regards to its structure. GIVEN with regards to graphics he looks outstanding and he was the right size. However his body was far to upright and his legs FAR to thick and chunky, he did not look like an animal who could swim at great speeds( although he did.) In the end of the day he still looked far too much like the costume version. Now i get that many fans WANTED that, they wanted it to stick to the original godzilla and i respect that. At the time when the original was shot , the only option they had was to put a man in a costume and send him out into a miniature down. However for me at least such design doesnt work anymore. It just looks too fake and too disproportionate.

Then for example Jurassic Park is a rip-off of Monster island and The Terminator is a rip-off of Mecha-Godzilla. Besides this Superman lizard looks like any other dragon type monster of that time. the only reference to Godzilla is the size, but still I know where you are coming from.

    Gene Siskel even asked the question, "If you're going to go through the trouble of putting us in a monster movie, why don't you at least take advantage of having the monster either eat or squash us?" in his review of the movie. I just wanted to recall it because of what Gene said to Roger Ebert via telephone.

    I've never been on the hate bandwagon for this one. Maybe because I was twelve when it came out and had only seen a handful of Godzilla flicks by that point (and I have a greater fondness for the British flick Gorgo), but I remember being entertained and if there is nothing better to do, I'll watch it if it's on TV on a random Saturday afternoon.

    Genuinely unwatchable. The bouncing cars when he arrives is fantastic (something the new Zilla lacks imo, he seems very light footed for his size), but apart from that this is a shocking film with absolutely no redeeming factors apart from the late 90's fascination with CGI overindulgence. Also why in Gods name would you wave a lighter in the face of someone suffering from PTSD!?

    As bad as this film is, (as film, and as a Godzilla picture), I honestly enjoyed this movie more than Godzilla 2014. I like the new design of Godzilla in 2014, but the characters were so bland, and worse yet, no fun. The characters were as cardboard as they come in 98, but at least there was some humor, and more than 10 minutes of a giant Godzilla esque creature causing destruction. In terms of Godzilla being more like his Toho counterpart, the 2014 is far better, in terms of character, and story each are pretty bad, the characters as I stated earlier, are probably more useless, and forgettable in the latest version. If a movie can't be emotionally sustaining, I at least wan't to be entertained, which I was with the 98 Godzilla, with the Godzilla 2014 I was pretty bored, as everything outside the monster scenes, was dull, and uninteresting.

    There were once talks for Spielberg to adapt the novel "Robopocalypse" (which I started reading for that reason, fantastic book), we hope that something like that can show audiences how summer blockbusters used to be.

At least it's not a major snore to watch and the length is perfect. Not too long and not too short. Godzilla 2014 was too long and too boring for it's own good. Great review!!
    Remains to this day one of the most disappointing movies I've ever seen.
    Even if I (a Godzilla fan) were to ignore the title, the film still suffers from too many problems (pacing, plot-hole filled script, dull characters, lame humor, un-inspired action) to be enjoyed imho.
    The most shameful thing is that David Arnold's score is SOOO incredible (one of my personal favorite film scores ever) and deserved to have been featured in a true honest to god G flick!

    I still suspect that this movie did not actually start as a Godzilla movie. Watch it and the older classic "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms" back to back and the similarities between the two become apparent. I can't help but suspect that this started life as a Beast remake and someone scratched out the title and scribbled in Godzilla when the license became available. And as a Beast 20k remake it isn't THAT bad...

      Oliver Harper Crap, I HATE trying to give advice to people that ALREADY make a good thing. What the hell do I know? But I DO like it better when you talk about Siskel and Ebert's review than when you put up big portions of their stuff. S&E are pop-culture critics everybody knows and it their review IS relevant to a retrospective, but I'm here to listen to YOU, Oliver (not a bunch of middle-of-the-road hacks).
      But let me end this post with praise. I really enjoy this show, especially how you can separate the different contributions of different artists (cinematography, effects, soundtrack, photography, etc), and judge those contributions individually. It makes you stand out from the crowd and makes the Retrospective really special. Don't listen to my asinine criticism. It's just ONE THING that sticks out from and otherwise awesome UA-cam show and, I suspect, it's just because S&E always rub me the wrong way. Just keep doing what you're doing!

      John Michael Yap And Oliver is nicer. And respectful of artists. And he never celebrated stupidity, or being slow to understand something. I suspect Oliver looks up to S&E, but the two of them (especially Ebert) seem to sit in the audience with their arms folded, egotistically expecting an easy, linear experience similar to ones they've enjoyed in the past. They never discovered a masterpiece in their lives because their minds don't work that way.
      However, it can be argued that their opinions have a place in the retrospective due to their own pop culture status, so whether included or no, the Retrospective is still justified whatever Oliver decides to do. So I suspect this is an opinion matter, but hey. Isn't that what message boards are for? lol

    • @KRSsven
      @KRSsven 9 років тому +8

      +Jim Slav They may be 'hacks' to some, but Ebert was a widely respected (and even syndicated) film reviewer. I too don't think Oliver's reviews particularly need them, but I still like to hear what 'popular' US audiences probably thought at the time. I usually disagree with their evaluation of some of the films I think fondly of (such as Predator 2). What I don't think is cool is a film director/producer hating critics so much that they put caricatures of them in their films so they can laugh and point. I agree with them though - why didn't they at least get squished or suffer some calamity? Why even bother if you're NOT going to?

    I always loved this one ever since I was a kid and I watch it often. I love its dark mood and David Arnold's score. It has a great cast (Jean Reno is amazing in everything and I thought Matthew Broderick was quite believable as a scientist). I can see why fans of the original Godzilla didn't like it as it is not a Godzilla movie but a very enjoyable monster flick with great production values. Maybe the reason I love this film so much is because I really don't care about the original Godzilla (I found the 2014 movie much less enjoyable). Great review Mr. Harper, it's great to have a reviewer that's not only about destroying a movie for laughs. You are very professionnal !

  • @sespider
    @sespider 10 років тому +6

    The look of this Godzilla is great. Not having lumbering around at a snail's pace was a great idea. It's a feature the original Godzilla creators wanted but couldn't achieve. They originally were going to make him thinner and faster for their stop-motion plans but the production was too costly back then. So they went for the much cheaper costume and miniature live action style. They wanted a leaner and faster Godzilla and that's one reason Toho signed off on his new design for this film. Plus they wanted to keep the American style seprate from their's.
    This movie had a LOT of potential but belly flopped in large part to the terrible script, cast, and acting.

    • @Drforrester31
      @Drforrester31 9 років тому

      I've never, ever heard that they wanted Godzilla to be fast. You are correct about the stop-motion, but I think you're adding your own ideas about the designs. Original storyboards all show him standing upright, and with less of a gut because obviously they didn't know what a man in a giant dinosaur suit would look like. And a creature the size of Godzilla moving quickly while standing upright wouldn't have worked, even in fiction.

    • @sespider
      @sespider 9 років тому

      Dr. Forrester
      They said it. Just not exactly how fast they originally wanted him to say. As for the storyboards, standing upright has nothing to do with him being slow. Standing upright could be fast or slow. They had to change his look once they realized they couldn't go the King Kong route.
      "but I think you're adding your own ideas about the designs." No I'm not. That would require lying. Something I'm 100% against.

    • @firetools
      @firetools 9 років тому

      SEspider Can you prove that Toho specifically said that? Any source, quotes, etc?
      Granted, Toho's original vision for Godzilla was probably that of a thinner, more streamlined creature, but as far as this movie goes the input for Zilla/GINO's design was mostly between Emmerich and the monster's designer Totopolous(the main character was named after this guy).
      While this monster had a decent design, it doesn't help to deviate so far from what's already established, even if it was the original vision(I think a good anology to this was how George Lucas originally envisioned the old Star Wars movies)
      Eh, not a big fan of this argument anyway. The debate over the creation of Zilla/GINO has always been a he said she said.
      "Emmerich decided to drastically change Godzilla behind Toho's back BUT WAIT Toho was supportive of the idea all along, this design was their original view of Godzilla!"
