The reason why it flopped was because it was only released in certain cinemas as a deal was made between the movie producers and the cinema chain. When they realised that this failed it went on public release.
I think you are confusing the story! It had the widest release of a film at the time and it was booked on the best screens of each theater for the first 4 weeks of release. The movie bombs and then they were stuck with empty or near empty screenings for the 4 or so weeks.
My introduction to Godzilla was, my Dad & I stopped by a neighbor's house & one of the classics was playing on the TV. I was enthralled, didn't want to leave! It was just a quick visit but it did start me down a rabbit hole at the rental store. Years later, I worked at Wal*Mart & when Godzilla came out for sale, we all joked about it. I turned 13 in 1998, and I saw this in theaters. It was the first Godzilla adaptation I've ever seen, and I liked it. It reminded me of a dinosaur movie, like Jurassic Park. I saw the Jurassic Park films and liked them, so maybe that's why I liked this film even though I've never seen any other Godzilla movies.
As someone who was 9 at the time, this was my first Godzilla movie. I thought it was awesome lol. If anything it encouraged me to seek out all the other films in the library. That and the taco bell tie-ins were awesome.
I love this movie. Probably because of the humor and heart. Personally, I think it is better than some of the more recent ones. Especially King of the Monsters. That movie should have been awesome, but the movie really just evolved around a dysfunctional family, while pretty much everyone else, including Godzilla, was an NPC.
So I get Minty that you understand Godzilla, but I always found the WHOLE PREMISE silly and so....I LOVED this Godzilla. It was fun and light and freaking fun!
I enjoyed this movie when it came out and it still holds up really well today. While they should have had this kaiju be simply a different named monster in the Godzilla universe called this movie something like "Godzilla: Reptilia"... it is still a far better movie than the newer US Godzilla movies.
I was in my 40s and had seen almost every Godzilla movie made when this came out. I liked it but, like a lot of people, I didn't think this was a Godzilla movie. The animated series was great, though.
I LOVE THIS FILM! Great practical and CGI special effects. Great casting. Jean Reno's American accent! A few of the situations were wild and unbelievable but... it's a monster movie. It's all fiction! Do I consider it a 'Godzilla' movie? Yes. It's a reimaging of the character. I LOVE THIS FILM!
My memory of this movie was my Dad renting a WCW PPV event. They accidentally gave us this movie instead. My Dad called and they fixed it but they left the Godzilla too. And also that’s alot of Fish
I want to see this movie back in 1998 when I was 16 years old and I thought it was only going to the best movie in 1998 finding out ( spoiler alert) that Godzilla is not a dinosaur but a mutant iguana. And also he does not have his atomic breath in this one or as tough.
I remember loving this movie when it first was released in 1998. Now days dont really care for it but it is pure nostalgic.
Broderick drove the taxi in the wrong lane into Zillas mouth, killed it and it's offspring
Thanks for doin' this one at a timely age for our ol loveable Kaiju 🐲
I absolutely loved this movie. When I think of godzilla as a creature, this is the one I think of.
First.
Please do Celtic Pride
This movie reminds me of babysitting a kid who couldn’t get enough of this movie
Trailer was good.... Movie... Meh.
It did it's best
It’s a good movie for a rainy day
My introduction to Godzilla was, my Dad & I stopped by a neighbor's house & one of the classics was playing on the TV. I was enthralled, didn't want to leave! It was just a quick visit but it did start me down a rabbit hole at the rental store.
Years later, I worked at Wal*Mart & when Godzilla came out for sale, we all joked about it. Part of the promotion were these pinbacks we had to wear; I wore mine upside down lol
(I will admit, I do still have it!)
`98🐉💨👎👎
Godzilla 1998 was the first Film I ever watched I was a kid but sure it's not close to the character but it's okay as a monster movie.
Imagine if everyone grew up with this Godzilla instead of the one we all know and love today
The best Godzilla ever!
I enjoyed this movie when it came out and it still holds up really well today. While they should have had this kaiju be simply a different named monster in the Godzilla universe called this movie something like "Godzilla: Reptilia"... it is still a far better movie than the newer US Godzilla movies.
I'm a huge Godzilla fan. This is my favorite Godzilla movie.
I was in my 40s and had seen almost every Godzilla movie made when this came out.
I liked it but, like a lot of people, I didn't think this was a Godzilla movie. The animated series was great, though.
This movie was the best because it was cutting edge graphics compared to the old ones. It was very enjoyable and they should have made a part 2.
So my family kept flicking back and forth between WCW and Godzilla. 😆 It was a huge treat to get a PPV as a kid, and having two at the same time was nuts.
I still love this movie. Today it is a classic.
This movie will always hold a special place in my heart cause this was the first I got to know of Godzilla plus a big fan of ID4
