This film has the rare situation where the protagonist (Korben) and the antagonist (Zorg) not only never meet, but are completely unaware of each other's existence.

He must be at least vaguely aware of Korben's existence since he and his 'Right Arm' (Tricky) concoct a plan to steal his identity and take his place on the trip to Fhloston

Words cannot describe my sheer love for this film. It is so rare to see such a strange, unique and fresh summer blockbuster like this anymore. My favorite part, easily, is when Corbin "negotiates" with the Mangeloid leader by blowing his head off, and Lee Evans asks where he learned to negotiate like that, and Brion James can barely make eye contact with the pissed off President lol. Gold.
+1 throughout. Glad it was Milla's favorite. Mine, too , excepting, Blade Runner 2049 for apparently personal reasons.

I remember seeing this movie back in the day when it just came out. I loved then and still love it today. It's one of those films that you loved as a kid and when you see it as an adult you're happy to see it's just as good as you remembered.
the music is great in this as well. very european techno sound from the good old party days of the 90's :-)
The little 'twinkling' music that accompanies LeeLoo's scenes was absolutely beautiful too. I don't know why, but it always puts tears in my eyes whenever it starts playing.

That's one of the funniest scenes in movie history.
JR Vaughn the guy playing the silly thug is Mathieu Kassovitz. Another great french director (la haine, the crimson rivers, gothika,...). The scene might actually have the only purpose of him having a cameo.
If only movies had more original serondipitous irrelevant to the main story scenes, such as the 1 u mention, we could have a multipass multitude of 5th elementesque creations

Yes!! I strongly agree, this movie pulled me into it's elaborate, deep and beautiful world. Star Trek, Star Wars and Babylon 5 took many hours to create a complex universe, the Fifth Element did it with one film.

Chris Tucker stole the show but everyone was incredible.
Chris SOLD the character and the fact he could be such a dandy and a womanizer at the same time.
It still makes me laugh when he plays the recording of the girl having an orgasm.
I think I remember reading/hearing somewhere that he based that character off of Prince. So the dandy/womanizer isnt so far off. Only Prince could collect silk kerchiefs and still pull any puss he wanted.

I saw this in the theater when it opened in the USA....I have loved it ever since.
It was always my understanding that the black goo that runs down Zorg's head when he's talking with Mr. Shadow is supposed to be blood due to the stress of communicating with pure concentrated evil. There's apparently a genuine medical condition where people under extreme stress will actually start sweating blood and I imagine talking with a giant evil planet on the phone would certainly qualify. Zorg could barely form coherent sentences while he spoke.
You see the same thing happen to the General on the first space ship that attacks Mr. Shadow, he's paralyzed with fear as the fire rolls toward them and you see his forehead dripping with goo. I think the problem was that the blood didn't look quite right in those scenes so it wasn't clear what it was supposed to be. I personally think they should've had the blood leaking from the nose, ears and even eyes to show how evil Mr. Shadow was, but I don't know how they would've pulled that off.
I respectfully disagree. I think it is a manifestation of the evil itself, somehow touching them. Oily dark, perfectly symbolic of large industry and corruption of that time in the world, with many large oil spills destroying life.
I thought Mr. Shadow was squeezing his nuts from afar; letting him know who's in charge here and money is trivial.

@@picklesnoutpenobscott3165 This makes a lot more sense. It was too far off from blood to be a issue with it not looking quite right. I thought it looked exactly like used motor oil, especially when Zorg smeared it on his own face.
This movie was so much fun. Like most Luc Besson movies, it's utterly ridiculous, and rather childish, but that's part of the charm. Besson movies are usually a strange combination of violence, madness, and innocence, that touch the heart and spark the imagination. He is very important to me as a film maker.
@Joe Blow Well there is a theme throughout his movies where the main character walks into the Lion's Den of badguys i.e Leon, Kiss of the dragon. And that makes it utterly ridiculous because we all know the only thing capable of that is the T-800
Chris Tucker was one of the best things about the movie.
I loved how bold the concepts in this film present themselves as just being the truth, and not going over board with explanations. The character of LeeLoo is beautiful and innocent also. In a word, this film is perfect.
Never in my life have I ever fell in love with an actress character as I did leeloo. I'm not a resident evil fan but she won me over as a 16 year old in her performance. Thank you Milla.

He is awesome in this. I don't get why people criticize his performance for being over the top. He is playing a pop star!!!!!!! He played it perfect. Even though some of his outfits were feminine, I never though of his character like that.
Nothing like it before or since. It's got flaws but it's just so gorgeously over the top. Milla's a babe and the soundtrack is f#cking awesome. One of my fave films from the 90's.
I instantly "knew" that Moebius was either involved or stolen from. Of course I was right (or at least my instincts were).
The art of this movie is amazing, plus the soundtrack is one of my favorite.

No hate at all. I like the character, though, I also agree with many who felt he was hilarious at first but the joke wore a bit thin as the movie went on. That's not hate. Just an opinion.
I love this movie. They tried doing everything different from what was typical for sci-fi films. One part of the story I found clever was that the protagonist never meets the villain, yet they narrowly meet each other at several turns.

It's one of my favorite Sci-fi films for originality alone. I was very young when it came out and I hope I can see a screening of it one of these days. This was lightning in a bottle for Besson IMO, you can tell it was a passion project from beginning to end and I hope everyone involved will always be proud of it, I think it's earned its spot among the great films in its genre and in general.
Shame Besson didn't have the same genius for Valerian...

I just subbed to you yesterday, after finding your retrospective reviews on "The Thing", "Back to the Future", "Alien", "Aliens", "Indiana Jones" and "Event Horizon." I know you call them reviews, but these are more like mini-documentaries, in my opinion. I really appreciate the time and effort you have put in to making your own "trailers" at the beginning of each video and then going in to your very deep analysis of the movie from casting to soundtrack and beyond.
I had to comment here, because once I saw that you did "The Fifth Element" (one of my all-time favorite movies), I realized that you are passionate about a lot of the same movies I am from the 80's and 90's. It's a joy watching your videos, sir. Well done!

It is like they took that part of Heavy Metal and gave it it's own film, 100% agree, down to the CAB. I watched it recently with this in mind and it is a close fit. Tarla IS the 5th element.

One of my all-time favourites! Nearing perfection both visually and aurally. Incredible performances by all of the cast, particularly Milla's use of the "devine language", which was totally believable.
I always interpreted the black goo as blood, like the frequency of Mr Shadow is enough to get them to sweat a really dense glob of it. But then again, if they hemorrhaged through the skull, then they. . .
Holy shit, that IS Chris Moyles! Over 15yrs of watching this film and I never noticed. Something new every day.
I remember when I saw The Fifth Element and I was instantly reminded of Harry Canyon from the animated film Heavy Metal. A story set in the far future, the main character is a smartass taxicab driver who finds a really hot redhead, she's connected to some type of intelligent powerful evil orb that can talk and there's a power hungry guy in the background.
For a while I thought there was a good chance that portion of Heavy Metal influenced Luc Besson in the making of this film. I found out recently that he used to read the French version of the magazine Heavy Metal, but that was before the movie existed. If the movie Heavy Metal didn't influence Besson, it's an incredible coincidence.
That segment was based on The Long Tomorrow from the first issue of Metal Hurlant.

I love this movie, it is literally one of my all time favorites! I'm glad that there isn't more, it doesn't need more. Its perfect the way it is.
An absolutely BRILLIANT bit of cinema, and you struck all the right notes here in this review...very well done.
However, I found it amusing that you noted this 'age gap' between Willis and Jovovich, it never even remotely occurred to me when watching the film, as I assumed her character to be around 20 and his to be in his mid 30's, tops (hell, he looks good, so sue me, LOL)

I remember catching this on TV and being enamoured with it for its great action, visuals, character sand humour, it sort of is the 90s' answer to Blade Runner, but found myself drifting away after finding no one in my area especially liked it. But now, I'll be sure to track down the Blu-ray, cheers Ollie!
Still my favorite movie of all time. There is something about how it all comes together, like it shouldn't work, but does in a very special and unique way. Even thought the story and style is wacky all the actors really put in legit performances.
It may not be the "best" movie I have ever seen but it's certainly my favorite.
I left annotation on the video pointing out an error I made about casting. it's not Chris Moyles. Its actor Frank Senger who plays the assistant of the Diva. He's uncredited in the film. When I wrote this review there were loads of comments online with people saying "is that Chris Moyles?" I always thought it was. But it's not. Big mistake by me!

The actor who played Emperor Kodar Japhet in the opera scene was Sonny Caldinez. Sonny Caldinez had played an Ice Warrior in Doctor Who during the Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee era.

I love this movie. I especially love the pacing of the comedy. Scenes like the president smashing the spy cockroach and the scene that immediately follows always has me laughing, and seems like something out of Family Guy when you consider how spontaneous it was. After all the crap that has been released for years because Hollywood seems to have either run out of ideas or has no balls and sticks to playing safe, I think we really need another Fifth Element. Not literally, though I think the world that was created could lend itself to some spinoffs, but figuratively.
Yes. Or someone with the balls enough to make a blazing saddles space opera. Understanding we all can be made fun of, and enjoy laughing at ourselves and each other and it does not mean HATE.

One of the things that I really love about this movie is that they use practical effects mostly, and special effects sparingly. It's rather refreshing looking back nearly twenty years later. The special effects were used to enhance the scenes rather than outright making them.
It'd be really great if a mini series was made that would flesh out many of the elements of the movie.

Nice review, one of my favourite films, I have it on both VHS and Blu Ray, and the Blu Ray is very very good. Just the right mix of th eccentric, humour and action.
I remember paying to see this film 4 or 5 times in the theater that summer. It was a fun film. Bought it later on Laserdisc.
This movie is probably my favorite movie of all time. I have seen it countless times, and the soundtrack is fantastic whenever I am working on something where I need to concentrate.

I saw this on the IMAX screen at Navy Pier in Chicago not long after its original release and I have to say that seeing it blown up that large that it filled my entire field of vision was absolutely intoxicating. I still love this movie to this day and while I don't think a sequel would be a good idea, I'd enjoy reading Besson's original treatment I read he was calling "The Darkened Light" or something to that effect. Great video dude. Supremely entertaining.

Hello Oliver, just discovered your channel, now a new subscriber because of this review. This movie is one of my sci-fi favorites. Original movies like this are in short supply these days; now everything has to be a reboot, or a sequel. I wonder how a movie would turn out if Luc Besson were to direct a movie like Aliens, that would be something!
Still need to pick up the Blu-Ray, and the soundtrack for The Fifth Element. My two favorite scenes are the Opera scene, and when the SpaceShip ground crew member says, "We need some heat over here Mon! We need some heat!", don't know why, I chuckle during that scene!

I loved this movie so much when it first came out. I was 15 and it's the perfect movie for a 15-year old. :) I haven't watched it in several years and I'd been concerned about whether or not it would still work for me. Watching this definitely makes me want to revisit the movie. I always enjoy these and I'm really looking forward to your "Raiders" retrospective. It's one of my top 5 favorite movies of all-time so I'm excited to hear your insights on it. Great work, Oliver!

Originally saw this in the cinema 1997 and loved it, and loved it ever since. I think it gets better with multiple viewings as there is so much detail to take in. This is basically French science fiction and the most familiar cinematic French sci-fi since Barbarella, there is more good French sci-fi on film of course (Delicatessan, The Last Battle, City of Lost Children, Alphaville). I think the hair goo is meant to be a visual clue to a nervous Zorg, sweating his hair dye as an indication that Mr Shadow is the only thing he is afraid of. In the poignant end to A Death in Venice where Dirk Bogarde's character slowly fades and dies on a sun drenched beach, his hair dye also runs across his brow in the final shot. Then 1998 gave us Dark City :)

Trivial moment, right? NO.
It is such an everyday thing, not only is it not noticed, but they made it part of her customer script to enter the apology for it. Bad problem, mounting daily, never addressed beyond that non helpful script. You know there was an 8 million dollar planning meeting around that, and that was the airport's solution to the issue. Perfect dystopian. Kind of reminds me of our homeless issues, where nothing gets done and it just gets worse despite a gajillionty dollars. OMG this movie implies so much with a 3 line exchange! I love it.

I don't think it's entirely original. I have seen the cartoon movie "Heavy Metal" and the story line is strongly similar. I suspect this movie's author was also a fan of the cartoon movie.
I was scrolling to see if anyone else thought that... The cab driver story in Heavy Metal definitely has it's similarities. to many for it to be mere coincidence.
Its original in terms of never seeing a blockbuster this weird with such a high budget but yes it references heavy metal throughout the movie. But its still original as a movie even if it has elements of heavy metal and other media

I adored this movie, even with its wierd jarring tonal shifts, its just so much fun and New York just left me speechless with awe.
i was asked to do some concepts for a new luc besson movie but he rejected it all and let me keep it. You can find it here. I was very disappointed as it was my dream job, but thats just the way it goes sometimes.

I like your shuttle but the station is floral and lacks a solid deck. It's a cone made of whimsical shapes. beautiful yes, organic yes but ships are economic designs. loved the ferries wheel and details. Luc probably wanted something solid and blocky as the future he saw was very bright and metallic. lots of grim and brightness. You shouldn't care what anyone thinks never bend. Carry on with the art and become more extreme. Your style will become a thing.

Loved the film when it came out, but I feel it was a little dated last time I watched it!!!
I'll say something bad about it. haha. I never liked this film. I only really watched for Bruce, and he was miscast as you mention. He didn't fit in the film and all, but mostly I just couldn't get past the generic notion of good vs evil that drove the film. A giant bad guy planet? Hmm. And now that I know it was written by a child it makes more sense. It felt like a committee trying to remake Star Wars in shorthand with funky 90's sensibilities. I could see how Europeans would like it, just like Americans appreciate certain things. Good review though. Thanks.

I'm with you. I was excited to see it in the theater but dear God, it turned out to be sooo freaking irritating! Tucker, the music, that stupid language, and the story itself was lazy and just plain awful. It's one of two movies I've walked out on. The other was 2003's Hulk.
The story between good and evil is kept this simple on purpose, you should not take it serious.. it is a space PARODY

The Fifth Element (1997) is a Fantastic Movie.
One of the greatest films of all time, as far as I'm concerned. It's one of the few that I regularly rewatch on occasion.
This is one of my favorite movies and it came out of left field in 1997. The writing, acting, direction, special effects, music, costume design, set design, and editing was spot on. This sci-fi film had it all and it was just so darn fun to watch. I wish they would make more movies like this.

also my logic for the dripping when Zorg is on the phone with the darkness is that it's literally too much for his brain to hangle so he's bleeding out from it.
