No wonder Morthal associated stories felt incomplete to me, I felt that I missed some quest triggers at first. It's disappointing that Skyrim wasn't a fleshed-out experience, not like past games that are complete experiences.
I actually don’t think the Dragon Priest’s were all that into necromancy. After all, the Dragons largely regarded necromancy as taboo much like the humanoid races. That’s what made Durnehviir unique amongst the Dragons: his extensive use of necromancy to gain power and dominance over them. It wouldn’t make much sense for the Dragon Priests to so heavily delve into magics that the dragons themselves found distasteful. I also think that Morthal’s secrets are connected to the dragons, but specifically Durnehviir. Hjaalmarch may well have been his domain, and Kjenstag Ruins his seat of power.

Technically Daedra, while not ancestors, are related to mortals because they were brought into being by Anu and Padomai-something both created soul aspects which, in turn, created other daedra and those created THEIR aspects of their souls, which is Lorkhan and Auri-el / Akatosh / Alkosh. Lorkhan used most of the divine's power to create Nirn, coincidentally creating some other gods in the process. Not DIRECT ancestors, but maybe fifth cousin twice removed.
Nate, I absolutely love how passionate you are about Skyrim. We can hear it so clearly in these investigation videos. It makes it feel all the more real. You get your audience wrapped up in the story. Bravo.
I always loved this quest, a creepy quest in a creepy place involving creepy people, which really stuck with me because the way it ended for me was walking into Falion’s line of sight, no exchange of words, he just looked at me and the quest ended
Falion's cut content has ALWAYS intrigued me the most, I have been bugged by this for YEARS, literally since 2013, and I'm super excited to watch this video

Not to be repetitive but because Nathaniel has a) the ability to pronounce unpronuncable Dwemer words and b) inexhaustible sources of Skyrim videos and uncharted depths of hidden knowledge of Skyrim. I suspect he is one of the Dwemer, who achieved Chim and ascended to this realm when he realized Tamriel was just a dream like a fantasy genre videogame is to us. Yeah, or nay?
I like to think Keinstaag was the research lab of necromancy for the dragons, a particular form of mummification involved submerging the corpse under some swamp stuff, and I like to imagine bog mummies were the proto draugrs. since the lab was already developed their and it was so close to labyrinthian they just kept the shop open their.
Don’t forget the ice aspect. We have necromancy and frost magic here. The question is, what is undead and frozen at the same time? For me there are two things that come to mind. One is stahlrim whitch was used to cover the ancient Nord dead, the other are the wispmothers who look like a frozen ghost.
@@yourfriendlyneighbourhoodl6206 Wisp mother's aren't Atronachs, and neither are Ice Wraiths. Ice Wraiths even crumble into dust as only completely unnatural beings do.

Theory: What if this mysterious ritual was actually the same reason why the Draugr and Dragon Priests are the way they are in Skyrim. I remember watching a video about this special unknown energy or magic that Draugr use to live, that even though they are classified as undead, they were still alive when the process happened. And that they (according to the video) wake up in order to clean the crypts and then transfer their "life energy" to the Deathlords and Dragon Priests and various leaders of said crypts, only to go back to sleep again as a way of recharging this seemingly unlimited source of energy. Similar to how Morthals "powerful" energy for necromancy is portrayed.
I would love to invite Fallion and Valerica to a debate and lecture on Conjuration and the realms of Oblivion. I think those two alone could advance the understanding of Magicka as we know it
I was just imagine, if Kjenstag ruins are so might and mystery powerful, and it may have something to be with the dragon cult and necromancy... what IF it may be the place where Durnehviir, the lich dragon managed to create his philactery and struck the deal with the Ideal Masters, and the dread force that emanates from the ruins is infact the Dead Dragon's soul, powered by the Ideal Masters? They tricked him, but also were obliged to enhance his power as promissed, just don't tell him exactly which part of him would gain the power.
My top 3 guesses for who Falion is calling upon in the ritual to cure you of vampirism are Meridia, Azura, and the Ideal Masters. The Ideal Masters obviously because of their association to Conjuration and soul gems. However, while they're associated with souls, those souls are... well, dead. Not sure if they'd be able to actually bring someone back to life. Meridia would make sense since she's the daedric prince of life and is known as the "Lady of Infinite Energies." Obviously, with life as her domain, it would make sense for her to be involved in the "return" of life to a mortal who became undead. Plus, her hatred of undead would probably mean that an undead returning to its natural, uncorrupted state would make her very happy. Azura would also make a lot of sense because of the phrasing of the ritual speaks of transitions, which Azura is associated with. She is connected to soul gems and Conjuration through her artifact, Azura's Star. She also is often in conflict with undead. Furthermore, the quest to rid yourself of vampirism is called "Rising at Dawn," and Azura is the daedric prince of dawn and dusk.
Kinda like your point with Azura, though she really hates the idea of the Blackstar, of course that is because of the corruption of her artifact and doesn't necessarily inform her opinion on use of souls. I would like to think Meridia is a good candidate, specifically for cleansing the Dragonborn, as she is interested in you as her champion and helps ward off the awful of her, ever accepting your help as a vampire.
@@insaincaldo Depending on where you are in your playthrough, you may be Meridia's champion as well. And if you get cured after freeing Serana's mother, the Ideal Masters probably won't want to help you out - especially if you keep summoning their pet dragon out of their reach/control. But yeah, offering the soul to whatever Daedra answers is as good of a guess as any. And if you're the champion of Meridia or Azura, it's most likely going to be one of them that answers first as they have a vested interest in you. It's probably not Molag Bal tho. I think we can safely rule him out. lol

If I had to guess, it's likely a play on a reconstructed Old Norse name, "Idgríðr"-meaning something like "restless protector," or "wise woman of mercy." Then of course the Ravencrone bit just comes from her being essentially an old Witch (crone), and ravens being seen in Old Norse culture as messengers and harbingers of wisdom. Putting it all together, we've got something to the effect of "merciful wise old witch."
A thought on all of this happening in a swamp: What if the significance of the area lies in all of the living plants and animals, as well as the decomposing dead ones. The soul energy in the area would theoretically be greater than in some other areas of Skyrim because of the density of organic material. Easy access to many souls for necromancy, and would be prone to magical resonance and strange happenings. I know the game doesn't portray this area as full of life, but swamps are dense with it
My theory is that the ruins were Durnehviir's base of operations when he was studying his own necromancy and eventually served as his portal to the Soul Cairn prior to his imprisonment.
@@rcbecker1 it makes sense more after I played another few run throughs of the Dawnguard Quest line. After opening Valerica's portal, the dragonborn has their live essence sucked out from the soul cairn until either Serena turns them into a vampire or soul traps them. So it stands to reason that a big enough portal left open could suck the life out of the surrounding land. A portal big enough to transport a dragon.

I always felt like there was something wrong with the area and he was trying to keep it away with his near-legendary conjuration skills and knowledge. Some people do say TES and FO take place in the same Universe too, so that might be the origin of the Dunwhich monster.
Interesting video, I appreciate the time spent producing this one. The ending is a little unsatisfying, being a massive tease about what actually happened, but that seems to be a Bethesda trademark I suppose. On another note, do you suppose that Potema may have potentially used Kjenstag ruins and the massive wealth of Necromantic energy in Morthal to enhance her own powers when she raised her daedric and undead legions during The War of the Red Diamond? Being one of Skyrim's most famous necromancers I have a hard time believing she wouldn't notice it basically sitting on her doorstep.
Problem is, it's in Hjaalmarch and Potema was jarl of Haafingar. She'd be encroaching on another jarl's territory, which would invite conflict. ...Then again, she was a necromancer; boundaries obviously meant little to her to begin with. So maybe you're onto something!
Yeah I agree, you definitely might be on to something. Potema wouldn't just let that slide. In any case, Potema was involved with vampires too AND in Morthal we see that there was a brood forming in Movarth's lair! Maybe the two vampire groups were working on a bigger plot - to enthrall all of Morthal and prepare for Potema's return to the Kjenstag ruins!!!🤷♂️ It could have been the major take over plot of hers!
One little correction: Falion calls upon "those who are not our ancestors" when performing the ritual. That's a literal translation of "daedra". So it can't be the Ideal Masters he's calling upon, because they're their own type of entities. (Personal theory: maybe he's working with Meridia? She would probably be glad to help Falion undo Molag Bal's work, given her long-standing hatred for him.)

With regards to Gorm's coup, you can also overhear him talking to Benor, that local tough guy who wants to join the guards. Benor will ask him if it's time for that thing they discussed, and Gorm will say not yet but "something needs to be done". Benor will also talk openly to you about how Idgrod isn't doing her job as jarl properly. Since the Housecarl is usually responsible for overseeing the local guard, I wonder if Gorm keeps Benor off the guard because he wants to use him as an assassin or enforcer in his coup, someone he controls directly and discreetly.

"So let me get this straight. You just sent me out to do all this shit. You _know_ what's causing this mayhem. Yet you won't tell me. Okay." **sword slides from scabbard**
I think that the Jarl (in Skyrim) uses that pedestal for ancient magic rituals that perhaps runs in her family, but the stone itself predates her family and was originally created for a sinister purpose and Fallion is investigating it because he senses it’s more dangerous than she realizes. Which is why she gets so mad at him and forbids him from going near it, but why fallion needs you to not tell her because he needs to tame the magic before daedra show up or something
I always was quite unsure wherever I did see ghosts moving around in the swamp or if it was my imagination. Usually I would see just some puffs of smoke going around a corner of some ruins, or a blue flash moving past me, but it happened so rarely that I never really investigated it further.
I want a Story driven Spin-off in which you play as Falion. He is basically a main protagonist already and, to be honest, the most interesting NPC in Skyrim.
Would’ve been nice if Bethesda actually completed their cut content for the game and added more things to it the next time they ReReRe Release it for the new consoles coming out this year. But that would take time and effort I suppose.

This has been one of my favorite videos that you've made, thank you for all your time you put into your content. It's so enjoyable and makes my day better.
It's interesting that there seems to be so much necromancy associated with the Dragon Cult. According to Durnehvir, necromancy is a "forbidden art" that is outside the norm for the dragons themselves to practice. It's hard to see why they would allow the Cult to use it in that case.
I will give you some insight as to why her title is "Clever Woman" as we know, ESO is very long before Skyrim. In Skyrim, if you claim your connection to the College of Winterhold to Tsun as your right of passage, he speaks of magic as the "Clever Craft" and that the Nords had forgotten their respect for it. Thusly, her being a "Clever Woman" is the same as the use of "Mage" in Skyrim.
My personal theory about Falion was that he was a member of the mythic dawn cult who has managed to survive using life extending magic. That would explain his skill with conjuration magic, his knowledge of oblivion, and all the other weird stuff he knows.
"As the sun ends the night" This is technically called "dawn". There's a daedric artifact you can get called "Dawnbreaker". The daedra most likely to cooperate in ending someone's vampirism is clearly Meridia.
I got lucky and got that super early but I had to use a mod to actually make it awesome because it's pretty lame vanilla. I forget the mod name but it makes the dawnbreaker actually glow and shine like it's got the power of the sun.
Meridia is known to absolutely despise the undead, and would probably rather see you dead than cured to be honest. Especially since i don't think she even has that power, as far as i know there is no mention of her interacting with vampires ever. And i find it hard to believe she would want somebodies soul in a black soul gem. It's most likely Molag Bal, he's both the creator of vampirism and was the one who cured it in Morrowind. He would definitely jump on the chance to own more souls and is even thought to be the creator of the first soul gems.
@@ZingoBananaa According to the lore, Vaermina is the only Daedric Prince known to possess the knowledge of curing vampirism. So, whether or not even he knows it, Falion most likely strikes the deal with Vaermina.

Theory:
What if this mysterious ritual was actually the same reason why the Draugr and Dragon Priests are the way they are in Skyrim.
Yeah Nate briefly mentions how the ruin has strange powers, but then is like "welp the lore doesn't spell it out."
Well, we do know that Durnahviir is still talented in Necromancy as is.
Maybe it's just leaking through to Morthal?
I like this theory. It had to have happened somewhere.
Falion is probably just offering the soul gem to the first Daedric prince who answers his call...
I think that rejuvenating an undead is something that all Deadric Princes can do. He just offers a Soul as payment to whoever answers.
I think we can safely rule him out. lol
@@SadisticSenpai61 Yeah, the only way Bal would cure you, is if he would want the pleasure of stuffing you with the gift himself.

@@Fenris2 i have only ever seen him one time in a play through out of 100s and i followed him all over i forget if anything happends tho?
If I had to guess, it's likely a play on a reconstructed Old Norse name, "Idgríðr"-meaning something like "restless protector," or "wise woman of mercy."
Then of course the Ravencrone bit just comes from her being essentially an old Witch (crone), and ravens being seen in Old Norse culture as messengers and harbingers of wisdom.
Putting it all together, we've got something to the effect of "merciful wise old witch."
She is one of my favorite Jarls too!
A thought on all of this happening in a swamp:
What if the significance of the area lies in all of the living plants and animals, as well as the decomposing dead ones.
Not bad a good suggestion.

I wonder if Potema, the Wolf Queen of Solutude, got her nickname from High King Svargrim, the Wolf of Solitude?
Yeah I agree, you definitely might be on to something. Potema wouldn't just let that slide. In any case, Potema was involved with vampires too AND in Morthal we see that there was a brood forming in Movarth's lair!

@@just_harry1638 Thanks, I have no idea what that means. Check out the movie Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo.
I didn't realize there was so much to this area. I always got the feeling this area felt a little unfinished in the published game. Great vid!
Man I need Nate's new mod list and how to install it. A full modding guide from him would be awesome! Keep up the good work Nate.
He has one video for his graphical mods I'll link it

My personal theory about Falion was that he was a member of the mythic dawn cult who has managed to survive using life extending magic. That would explain his skill with conjuration magic, his knowledge of oblivion, and all the other weird stuff he knows.
Yeah he seems to know too much about oblivion and all that compared to others.
"As the sun ends the night"
This is technically called "dawn". There's a daedric artifact you can get called "Dawnbreaker".
The daedra most likely to cooperate in ending someone's vampirism is clearly Meridia.
True she does hate undead
A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON
