This is such a fantastic and practical solution for repairing plastic bumpers! The step-by-step instructions are super easy to follow. Thanks for sharing this valuable tip!
Watching from Greece.Really nice idea.Is it elastic like PP though or is it harder than that? Also in the situation you showed, the damage was in the middle,so the overall structure of the plastic part was good. What if the damage of the plastic starts at the edge of it and continues for say,5cm?Do you have any recommendation?I mostly use thermoplastic welding. I will definitely try your technique though!!!
First 1 inch paint stripper water bottle Styrofoam until egg yoke consistency then contact cement 'red can/ paint thinner mineral spirits on the other side foam until voids are filled level or more wet sand to 600 primer then paint

Since it's the acetone in most paint thinners/strippers that does the melting, just use pure acetone. Different brands of paint strippers have various chemicals in their mixes and may not even have acetone in them. Also what is the need for the contact cement? First off it's $20 for a pint. To all the guys saying "use Bondo" , it's not strictly a flexible plastic like the video is creating. Bondo will crack easily in this application.
Okay I really got to stop you at the beginning of the video here, never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever cut with one of those kind of blades like you're doing there with that kind of force exclamation point use a Dremel to cut out the rough stuff and then trim it with one of those gently. That type of blade can snap it can slip I'm telling you and then you can ruin yourself quick! Never think you're Superman and that it can't happen to you... Use razor knives to trim with never to cut out huge sections!
He's a self made genius! If we Were living in the cave man days, this guy would be one person to get us moving forward towards the future. BRAVO 👏 such a genius!
Wow, I never knew repairing a plastic bumper could be this simple! The use of common tools and materials makes it so accessible. Definitely subscribing for more great DIY tips!
Excellent video. I would try 99% acetone to the same consistency instead of the thinner/spirits. It will cure faster and is extremely durable, plus it's a more neutral color, not that you'll see that, but still.
I was thinking why not just use jb weld from the backside instead of all the styro foam goop. The metal screen will hold it in place. Then bondo filler to fair and paint.
Brilliant! Just wish the chemicals were explained as the process goes along, then it would be perfect. Language used can be translated easily so no problem. Thanks
Overall, interesting video, but not enough information on the specific products used. In my understanding, paint thinners can vary drastically in composition, with most, I believe, being predominantly mineral oil with a bit of trimethyl benzene added, other paint thinners are mostly esters (banana oil), some are citric acid based and some are largely acetone. I am guessing an acetone based paint thinner, or perhaps pure acetone would be most effective in dissolving the plastic foam. I am unsure about the purpose of adding the glue, but perhaps this might enhance the flexibility of the patch to make it more compatible with the plastic in the bumper. In the final spray painting, I believe it would be critical to select a spray paint that is made specifically for coating plastic bumpers. NAPA Martin Senour, Dupont and other automotive paint manufacturers typically have a product line specifically formulated for painting plastic bumpers. Other spray enamels may not bond well to plastic, would be too inflexible and crack and fail prematurely, and would not tolerate the large amount of thermal expansion and contraction that plastic undergoes with changing temperature.
@@realgaparking Never tried the harbor freight one' I'd say it'd probably work for someone at home and save a person some money. I have a couple different ones' one I made myself about 35 years ago. There's several different types of rubbers/plastics It' best to use the same material from an old scrap piece laying around for a filler.
My way was way easier after my wife was rear-ended and pushed into the guard rail and tore up the front bumper. Insurance company totalled it bought it back for $500 minimal damage. Sawed off the front bumper and man does it give our 2003 Chevy Trailblazer ls v-6 4 WD a mean look

Only problem is that the mixture you shown has another name, it's called firebrick. It's strong but extremely flammable. We used to use it to make fireplace starters out of old Styrofoam. The form and netting was good, but best to use a form of non-flamable sandable epoxy. Don't want to create a fire hazzard.
Good idea, but instead of using the glue and other products you can dissolve your styrofoam just as easy in acetone ( and the thick and sticky polystyrene can even be diluted with a little acetone to get a easy to pour and/or "painted" on the more porous remains on the plastic you're repairing. Just experiment with the quantity of acetone to dilute the original thicker paste . Be aware of vapors of acetone (flammable and Unhealthy )In acetone the polystyrene keeps an opaque transparant liquid instead of the yellow substance in the video with might for some purposes be more desirable. Greeting Frank

I really like what he did with the metal screen but wouldn't a plastic welder and a patch have worked just as good and probably a bit easier and faster? IDK, but that's what I'm thinking.

Plastic welding been used for over 30 yrs

Try using Bondo. Same results much quicker.
It would be nice if you showed the items you are using for this project

Have you ever Heard of Bondo!?
Bondo is a brand of body filler.
Worst body filler I've ever used.
Yes
This was my first thought. I have used this plenty and never had an issue with it.
It would've been nice if you mentioned what you were using during the vid
Rubber contact cement super glue and WOOD sand paper.
The paint will resolve the styrofoam with time. It has a catalyst that will dissolve it.

🤔A little styrofoam some paint thinner and some rubber cement makes a good rubber feeling replacement🧐 duly noted 👌🏾👍🏾💯
Styrene is some nasty caustic fumes so I’d be sure to have proper ventilation.

Fiberglass would have been quicker
Maybe but not as many clicks
Fiber glass resin won't stick to certain types of rubbers and plastics without turning loose.
I agree but harbor freight has a plastic welding kit works ok..

It would have been better if you hadn't removed the residue inside the hole. This makes the repair stronger.

quick question, why not use JB weld ?
I would’ve used a double solvent rather than paint remover. I would have used acetone or maybe, maybe petroleum to dissolve the styrofoam.

How about using bondo or fiberglass. To easy.
Eu acho que dava menos trabalho cortar esse mesmo retângulo um pouquinho maior em outra peça e usando a malha de aço juntar as duas e uni-las.
Usar Durepox e mais facil, rapido e mais barato.
Id of used super glue and baking soda 😂😂😂
Bit of fibreglass stuck on the back bit of body fill job done in about 60 minutes and repainted
