Thank you. Congratulations.🌲🍀🌲 - Oh... I didn't know that silicone was soluble in acetone since acetic acid is what I had been taught.

Thank you for sharing! It's true that some surfaces may not allow paint to adhere well, so we need to choose the right materials. As you mentioned, canvas or roofing tiles could be good options for painting.
You can also thin silicon with mineral turpentine. That solution can then be used around automotive windscreens etc. to seal leaks. The fluid wicks into the gaps and over a day or so the turpentine evaporates away leaving a very thin skin of then cured silicon. Makes a very neat looking waterproof joint too.
@@RingZero I don't know what "HD" is. A manufacturer? There are at least two types of air curing silicon. The first emit acetic acid so smells of vinegar. The second releases an alcohol and are the "neutral cure" types. As I recall thinning both types with mineral turpentine can be done. The acetic acid releasing type can and does cause corrosion, as I found out......
@@aeroearth, if I am understanding @RingZero’s question correctly, (from HD and such) HD could very well be referring to Home Depot. I am notorious for using acronyms and abbreviations for places and such, drives my hubby crazy. TJ’s is short for Trader Joe’s, SWay is Safeway, GHBC is Great Harvest Bread Company. I think you get the gist.
Thank you for sharing the information! The mixture of silicon and mineral spirits is a great option for sealing seams, and it will definitely work well for waterproofing. It's also a useful tip for anyone looking to maintain and protect outdoor gear.

Thank you for your comment! Acetone does evaporate very quickly, but the evaporation rate depends on the temperature and environment. As for dissolving plastic, acetone can indeed dissolve certain types of plastics, but not all of them. Hope this information is helpful to you!
WARNING: Do not use PET plastic bottles or sprayers for acetone. They will warp, crack and leak soon. Big mess + fire hazard. Use HDPE (recycle code 2) or PP (recycle code 5) instead. Both work as long as they do not have very thin walls. Glass would also be ok. Make sure the container is properly air-tight if you want to store it. Acetone will very easily evaporate and not all containers are designed to be water-tight, much less gas-tight. Otherwise this is a nice DIY weatherproofing trick that is very cheap and effective. You can do much the same thing with mineral spirits instead of acetone. This is much less toxic to handle and can significantly cheaper depending on where you live. The downside is it requires much more time or mixing.
the bottle is only 1 problem. the sprayer will stop working and it will leak all over the place as the acetone attacks the rubber inside the plunger. even chemical resistant sprayer will die as that is viton inside which is destroyed by acetone.
Lot of VERY insecure people in the comments, telling the word how they already knew this. Very sad. I'd like to point out to all these geniuses that this idea represents a way of using leftover sealant from a job, rather than wasting time and money buying a separate product.
That's going to depend on how much you use. I have a piece of canvas drop cloth that I treated using silicone dissolved in mineral spirits and then soaked into the fabric. It acts as a cover for a garden cart and sits out in the spring and summer months during sun and rain. It has been a few years and water still rolls right off. No leaks or issues. Unless a hole actually gets punched into the material, it should last a minimum of five years even out in the elements. Granted, that was soaked and hung to dry on a clothesline, not brushed on. A 4'x8' piece of canvas took about 3/4 of a gallon of solution and I used an entire tube of silicone in a gallon of mineral spirits for the solution.
It doesn't last long. I've done this years ago to make cheap rubber molds. You spray it on then after it dries brush on thicker rubber. The thin layer is very delicate.

@solarsynapse The compound used in water repellent spray is actually perfluorooctanesulfonamide (PFOSA). An organifluorine 🤪
Thanks for sharing that with us, I found it very interesting 😀😀

Hola , fantástico , para el tejado, me pregunto si servirá como anti Carcoma o anti minadores de la madera. sería fantástico para exteriores . gracias Felicidades.
- Hello, fantastic, for the roof, I wonder if it will work as an anti-woodworm or anti-wood miner, it would be fantastic for outdoors. Thank you. Congratulations.🌲🍀🌲
- Oh... I didn't know that silicone was soluble in acetone since acetic acid is what I had been taught.

Acetone fumes might not be the safest thing around an electric drill. Only takes one spark to ignite the fumes.

It would have put his video at #1
Sometimes you can be too afraid to try things. What's going to happen when the fumes ignite?

Try and paint that surface? It keeps paint from adhering too. It may be good for canvas or roofing tiles.
Thank you for watching the video and leaving your feedback. Each comment you make helps the channel grow and motivates me to work more effectively
Silicon is an element. He was using silicone rtv. An organic compound.
Will try that combination. Would this require 100% silicone tubes from HD and such ?
Shocking 👍

Silicon thinned with mineral spirits is a common mixture used for sealing seams on tents.
This may work just as well.
Thank you for sharing the information! The mixture of silicon and mineral spirits is a great option for sealing seams, and it will definitely work well for waterproofing. It's also a useful tip for anyone looking to maintain and protect outdoor gear.

Bogus : 1. 12 Oz of acetone will evaporate in 45 seconds. 2. Eats plastic quick!!!

Thank you for watching the video and leaving your feedback. Each comment you make helps the channel grow and motivates me to work more effectively
Acetone is not very toxic. Actually your liver produces it to feed your brain if no sugar is available.
I was just about to comment on the very same thing, but thought surely somebody else must have picked up on it. Kudos
Alight Captain of the fun police, geezus lighten up, we all want to see his hack on how to put an acetone fire out whilst being on fire lol
the bottle is only 1 problem. the sprayer will stop working and it will leak all over the place as the acetone attacks the rubber inside the plunger. even chemical resistant sprayer will die as that is viton inside which is destroyed by acetone.
Lot of VERY insecure people in the comments, telling the word how they already knew this. Very sad.
I'd like to point out to all these geniuses that this idea represents a way of using leftover sealant from a job, rather than wasting time and money buying a separate product.

@@Tips365day You must be a politician...you DID NOT answer the simple question...
@@ricksweetser1683 That is the only thing he knows how to answer questions. He is not fluent in English.
It doesn't last long. I've done this years ago to make cheap rubber molds. You spray it on then after it dries brush on thicker rubber. The thin layer is very delicate.
