One thing I find obvious about the movie that I see nobody talk about is how the main character is portraying "himself" as Jesus. The dude grows a following, defies the status quo of a tyrannical rule, gets betrayed by one someone close to him and is in the end executed which is portrayed as a grand victory. Besides a groomer the guy has some delusion of grandeur.
The irony of the synopsis saying "communism is all over the place" and showing the spread of Christianity at 20:48 with bright red is fucking incredible.
One reviewer described it as “A Christian persecution movie made by people who never had to face persecution in their lives” and I don’t think a more perfect description could’ve been said

And it sucks because in some countries there actually are Christians who are persecuted. But the dudes who make stuff like this live in a Christian majority country where it’s not a marginalized group.
The funniest part of this whole thing is we are supposed to believe that all of these worldwide developments not only happened without a GINORMOUS uprising, but that they all were instilled into society, including a WORLDWIDE language, over the course of 5 years.
What kills me about the American Christian persecution complex is that there are actually places in the world where people actually face backlash for being Christian. Not for having bigoted views and using Christianity as an excuse, but for just simply worshipping Jesus. Why not make a movie about places in Africa and Asia where this happens? Is it possibly because…the heroes of such a story wouldn’t be white..?
@@LiquidSwanThey're just stating facts. At no point in the history of the United States has it ever been illegal to be Christian. They're just Prejudiced and cry Persecution when they see another group gaining rights/freedoms/acceptance to try to cover up that they're Prejudiced.
Christianity is just a veil for some of these people and seemingly those who made this movie. The persecution complex isn’t just about Christianity, but to your point, about political, racial and ethnic identity as well.
I like how ONLY Christianity is outlawed, instead of all religions, or even all Abrahamic religions. I guess the world government decided to give Christianity the middle child treatment
honestly, and i find it hysterical that there's so many christians that honestly believe something like that could happen. there are legitimately unaware of the fact that christianity is one of the most established religions in the world, and the most established in the usa.
As a Christian I’m alright with banning Christianity as it is (obviously not really, I just see why people hate on our religion lol) . We’ve gone so far from what our religion is supposed to mean at this point smfh Edit: this comment was made without thinking; hopefully I redeemed myself down there 👇🏾
Also, if Christianity is illegal, why would the cops keep a database on all the Christians' phone numbers? If they have a list of all Christians, wouldn't they just go and arrest them?
Tbh, I wasn’t really paying attention to this, but anyways I think the police let them all off? Like maybe they just payed a fine or “denounced” their religion in front of them and they let them off but kept them on their watch list? My attempt at adding…something to this movie.
I was born in what people would call a "developing country", now living somewhere else where life is better. It never ceases to amaze me how people who basically have known nothing but privilege feel they are being robbed of their rights if they're put in a mildly inconvenient position. Dude, people spent the days watching Netflix during the lockdowns here, while there was people in my country who had to decide between quarantine or starvation.
I hope you are doing okay! And yes it’s so stupid what people who have never known true struggle are doing with this pandemic. Acting like it’s their victim moment when there is real people struggling in the world. ❤️
I mean there were plenty of people who had it really bad during the early lockdowns in the US - but the biggest complainers about the covid restrictions are the people who could easily live comfortably in their homes for the next 50 years without worrying about money or their mental health, AND people who wear glasses because their glasses fog up with the masks on but they still wear masks anyway. I've had to wear a mask longer than most people and I'm so fucking tired of it because of these selfish dickheads who can't just mask up, wash hands, and stay home.
@@FrenkTheJoy same here. Cyprus, where I live now, is not a rich country at least for European standards. There were people who struggled, but the social security network here is pretty decent. There were people who were complaining that people receiving stimulus checks were making more money than those who kept on working during the lockdowns, go figure. But yeah, the noisiest where people very well off and religious nuts. You see, it's not just an American thing.
Back in 2020 both of my best friends parents died to Covid, it was horribly depressing and she had to move to California. Crazy while this was happening bro was crying about not being able to go to a public park without a mask.
It’s now 2024 Over 7 Million people have died from COVID-19. Those who never taste hardship gage at its flavour. Those who grew up with hardship won’t notice its taste.
Not sure if anyone picked up on this, but the director/lead basically cast himself as Jesus. The movie starts with him basically alone, wanting to spread the word of god. Then he starts gaining close companions that assist him in spreading the word of god. The State gets real mad about it. A close friend betrays him, and sells him out. Then the State kills him, and he becomes a martyr. Short of miracles and rising from the dead that’s pretty much the story, and I’m pretty sure that’s sin number 1406 in this saga. 1 way ticket to super hell
Sheesh. Imagine being so self-absorbed you insert yourself into a story as the person you're supposed to IDOLIZE. Isn't that basically a false idol? God really, really hates those

The whole “you should be happy for them, they’re going to heaven” is a sentiment I actually heard a lot growing up in the church. If someone died unexpectedly or was killed or anything like that, that was usually the first response
There was actually a verse about like death is joy something like that I forgot about it but yeah, cause for Christian they will finally see God but you shoudnt be happy because someone is dead but because he/she will finally see God, that would be scary if someone is happy when someone died😂
One thing I'd like to add after watching the whole movie, is there's a scene where Hunter and Hannah are talking and she tells him both her parents committed suicide, and he responds by saying he completely understands how it feels to lose your parents because even though both his parents are alive, they aren't *living* because they're athiests.
lmfao, that's not even a "be happy your parents are in heaven" moment that's just an "I can't stand the thought of someone ever deserving more sympathy than I at any point so I'm just gonna invalidate your feelings through phrasing" moment.
TBH at first I really thought you were making a joke as like an analogy of explaining how ridiculous it is that they’re pretending they can relate to actual hardships because of dumb shit related to religion and then I realized… no, you’re actually saying that’s a scene in the movie. Fuck.
as a christian, i find this movie extremely informative and accurate. every day for me is a struggle; i wake up and have to follow the trail of live fish nailed to trees to find my fellow christians. we spend our time in empty rooms with nothing but veggie tales dvds and acoustic guitars (we only have two because guitars have six strings and if we had three sets of six strings it would be 666 and then satan himself would enter our bloodstream directly). we don’t take sips of wine during communion, we take turns drinking each other’s blood from shot glasses to survive. it’s what jesus would have wanted

Oh Kurtis is giving this guy WAY too much slack. Firstly, he was 19 when he started dating his then 14 year old girlfriend. This guy is a YOUTH PASTOR. Yes. He is a YOUTH PASTOR. He worked with teenagers under the age of 18 and that’s how he met his girlfriend. Let that sink in.
Not only that, but production probably started from somewhere between mid 2020 to mid 2021 at the latest...so at most, they had a little over one year of not being able to go to parties, and they saw it as: "It's been five years, the cities have collapsed, the US government shifted power to a ruthless dictator, and all Christians must remain in hiding lest they be whipped at the unholy stable..."

I would just like to add that “The Fish” symbol thing was supposed to be done like in tandem with another person. From what I understand back in the day if you met a person traveling you’d draw the first line of the fish. If they finished the fish it would show they were Christian. If they didn’t they weren’t Christian but you didn’t out yourself. So going around drawing random completed fishes just does nothing and isn’t even accurate to how the symbol is supposed to be used 🤦🏼♀️
Exactly! I believe it was specifically was used in the Roman Empire around the time of Caesar Nero who actually persecuted Christians. But yknow, real persecution, not whatever this movie was complaining about
Yeah I had the same thought! Like dude put half circles everywhere and see who completes it ya know? They must be bad Christians not knowing how it works 😂
It was a myth in the first place. There's no early evidence of the fish ever having been used as a Christian symbol, only stories from centuries later. It's just another way for them to feed their persecution narrative and feel badass somehow. Kinda like an ancient "war on Christmas" thing lol.
Its funny how people like this worship someone who was tortured and died for them yet you ask them to bear the slightest bit of inconvenience for the safety of others and they throw a fit

I'm in a region where the virus is completely out of control, cases are sky high, hospitals are overwhelmed, and hardly anyone is vaccinated due to getting their news from bullshit on social media, but masks are still required most places. The cops here mostly don't wear masks. It's literally the only accurate part of this piece of shit movie.
I think they're trying to say the government doesn't follow its own rules. Which has been quite true during the pandemic especially with cops and politicians like Boris in the UK and Gavin in California.
When I watch a bad movie, I usually question if the director ever made a movie before. With this one I'm questioning if the director has ever *seen* a movie before
my mom genuinely watched this movie (huge christian) and was trying to convice my brothers and i that this was gonna be the state of the world in 2025, she still parrots that to this day
The thing is there ARE places where Christians are struggling or even persecuted. Not many anymore but it does happen. Except it doesn't happen to white rich people in Central Europe or the USA. And so them making up an alternate reality just so their privileged asses can have their persecution fantasies is just even more embarrassing. Like. Their views are so narrow that all they can ever think of is making up big apocalyptic scenarios that focus on white Christians specifically

Probably heal the sick and preach against going to church while the pandemic is on. No joke, there's a Bible verse where Jesus says that people who pray in public are hypocrites who are simply performing for their fellow man and true believers should pray quietly at home. I had quite a few Christian friends and family wielding that verse against people who were going to church purely to demonstrate how "faithful" they were to others.

I think it's funny how the synopisis says that "communism is all over the place". Like Communism is some drug or disease. It also doesn't help that the movie never even mentions communism so it sounds like they used it becauase "it was bawd".
In this movie, for sure. But it is an unfortunate reality in other parts of the world. Especially the Middle East. I have many friends who were Christian, gay or both that had to flee because they were constantly being hate crimed and they needed to flee to save their lives. Persecution is not funny and shouldn’t be taken as a joke. The fact that you wouldn’t say that for other religions also says a lot.

I love how the whole world being communist actually never had a role in the plot, like the director just wanted to make the worst possible world he could think of and he was like "oh let's just add some communism in there"
In fact, there was blatantly anti-communist parts such as the state, having police, and only Christianity being banned. Marx was anti-religion as a whole. The movie depicts an authoritarian world, not a communist world.

Can someone explain the mental gymnastics it takes to go from, "wear a mask when you go outside and stand 6 ft away from people" to "it's a war on Christianity"? In the states, religious meetings were limited for a while, but they weren't outright banned. Like what, is one of the 10 Commandments "Thou shalt spread the virus"? It's really upsetting how they make social distancing sound like an actual event that's way more serious and led to deaths instead of trying to prevent them
I passed a grafitti today that said "Wearing masks now is what shouting "Heil Hitler" was back then." Some people have seriously deranged views on covid restrictions...
It's mockingly called the 'christian persecution complex,' but there's a bit more to it than that. Christianity is a religion born in persecution, and has some theological adaptations reflecting that. A veneration of martyrs. A strong belief that holding to the faith in times of hardship will be rewarded. An adversarial relationship to non-believers. To be persecuted is to experience a moral authority. All of which is a problem in countries where Christianity is both the majority religion and politically dominant, like the US: How can you experience the virtue of persecution when your faction is in charge of everything? The Christian persecution complex is the answer to that: If you're not being persecuted enough, then you can either imagine or provoke it. Either make up conspiracy stories in which every tiny slight against your religion's authority is an act of persecution ("Wah, the town council refuses to erect monument to the ten commandments on state land, we're being oppressed!") or push the limits of what your religion is allowed in order to get some of that sweet, sweet persecution ("Wah, the state is forcing Christian businesses to close because we refuse to serve the icky sinner gay couples!") Either way, the Christian gets to claim the moral high ground and that special favor of God that is reserved for those who hold the faith even when the world is against them.
The fun part is, during lockdowns in germany, where this movie was produced, the one thing that remained open the whole time were churches. The last thing that would happen is christianity being illegal. There’s actually a huge controversy about this. People wondered why they were advised not to meet others in general but the church gets an “Extrawurst” and remained open nonetheless.
Maybe the Conservative Christians here in the U.S. need to go to Germany then, because they’re whining about being “targeted by the liberal government” during the pandemic despite all other religious places of worship (Mosques, Temples, etc) being closed for a time being.
It’s like the people who are against vaccines taking on the Star of David ON THEIR OWN WILL and making themselves a comparison to Jews who were forced to wear them and killed. Those people just love to be the victims.
I think the dumbest thing about this movie (which is Saying Something), is that COVID started in 2020 The movie is set in 2025 You mean to tell me that in *five years*, ALL of humanity created a GLOBAL LANGUAGE, managed to completely eradicate Christianity (and presumably all other religions given that we dont actually see any of them in the movie but then, this movie isn't great at showing, not telling), created a worldwide spread of communism, and managed to get EVERY PERSON ON EARTH except for like these three people to wear masks and stay home? Oh, and that, in FIVE YEARS, every person on Earth just completely forgot all about Christianity? Like if you're going to fake martyr yourself to impress your teenage bride you should probably, I don't know, set your God awful movie sometime in the 2400s or something?
I think the only thing this is SLIGHTLY possible is creating a world language. I mean you could just get all the governments to speak toki pona or just create a simple language. But getting everyone to speak the language is insanely hard to do.
And let’s not forget that governments have laws, regulations, and protocols against banning religions. Much less one that is as big as Christianity. One does not simply have religion, especially the biggest religious majorities of all time, banned in the snap of a finger. Much less in 5 years flat.
@Bob Bob The difference being not everyone was aware of CHAZ in the first place and not everyone is from the U.S or aware of the things happening in the U.S. However, most people will know what Christianity is seeing as it has been around for thousands of years and is one of the largest religions in the world. Ya know, with billions of believers. So it’s kind of amusing to think a person would suddenly not know what Christianity is after only a few years of it being banned considering how widespread and well known it is.
@Bob Bob CHAZ has existed for a few years. Christianity has existed for centuries, and many cultural touchstones are built upon it. Also I’m not “talking smack”, the people I’m talking about are fictional characters.

I specially loved how he is explaining christianity to the police as if this was some event that happened millions of years ago yet it had only been 5 years since 2020
also love how they're trying to make christians look oppressed when in reality they're more likely to be the opressors btw, what about jewish, muslims, and literally every other religion in this movie?
the entire idea of facemasks being used to oppress people is absolutely hysterical honestly, china was literally trying to ban facemasks during the hong kong protests, because face masks are ways of concealing your identity.
Also the police not wearing a mask in this dystopian "WEAR YOUR MASK OR GO TO JAIL OR DIE!" universe... But hey, they got one thing right. Police don't follow the laws.
They live in an alternate reality. Idk how Christianity can be banned when 98 percent of our elected officials are Christian and over 60 percent of the country is also that.

I remember when the PM or premier or whichever jurisdiction announced the first lot of restrictions where I lived, when speaking about funerals, he made a huge deal of 'yes, I know how hard this one is going to be,' acknowledging it was the worst restriction of them all. But these writers couldn't think of that?

I think about my dad who lost his sister just as Covid was making its rounds in the west; she passed away of stomach cancer around January of 2020 and my dad was offered to attend her funeral. My family lives in Australia & my dad's immediate family's from California, so he was offered to have the expenses of that flight to be paid for him. The lockdowns came and he couldn't go to say goodbye to his own sister off in person; nor could her own children and the other people in her life. My dad would pass away in his sleep in the middle of 2022 due to a sudden heart attack, and we were fortunate enough to be able to send him off with a funeral. The whole time, though, I just thought about how he couldn't see his own sister off, because of the lockdowns coming into action. I was grateful to be there to give him my farewell, but I was sad that he couldn't do the same to his own estranged family, or anyone else who'd lost someone during 2020 & 2021 that they couldn't see off, due to a global pandemic putting us at risk. But good to know these people know who really suffered, and that was people not allowed to attend parties or go to restaurants for a few weeks/months. Not the people who lost their lives or suffer with possibly lifelong affects of COVID, not people who couldn't say goodbye to lost love ones, but people who couldn't go out and have a nice time.

The intensity the director-writer has for his lack of understanding of basic Christian theology, philosophy, or history is the wildest part of the story. Ignorance is one thing-and blind faith is another-but I’ve never imagined someone being so adamantly unaware of his own religion’s history yet confident enough in his ignorance to write an entire movie about it. It’s wild. At some point, people like this should be receiving psychotherapy rather than access to religious scriptures. It’s also wild how the very people who think the whole point of practicing a religion is converting other people to said religion have no idea that their militancy is why people are leaving said religion or not joining it. Edit: just in case I came across as an antitheist; I’m a practicing Jew.

Most of the vocal Christians I've interacted with online and have seen on tv don't seem to know very much about their own religion though. Especially fundamentalists in the states. That's a pretty common atheist talking point, that many atheists know the bible and Jesus' teachings better than most Christians.
This has become more and more common as mainstream christians actively go against the bible and things that jesus explicitly said people should do if they want to be real christians. Jesus literally had a whole Thing about healing sick people for free, feeding poor people for free, stopping capitalists from selling and running a market in the temple on sabbath…….lmao and i say all this as an atheist. One thing I find obvious about the movie that I see nobody talk about is how the main character is portraying "himself" as Jesus. Besides a groomer the guy has some delusion of grandeur.
Good catch!

No joke, there's a Bible verse where Jesus says that people who pray in public are hypocrites who are simply performing for their fellow man and true believers should pray quietly at home. Oh yeah
@@daniellagomez2931 But the thing is this film - which the comment is about- and many of the people who spread this christian persecution msg are in the western world. Persecution isn't funny but neither is pretending to be marginalised when you're in a country where the majority of the country is of the same religion as you. In some middle-east countries, yes, there is persecution for those who aren't muslim but the comment wasn't about that.
@@leeneedsfriends6750 thats precisely my point. I did acknowledge the fact that this movie features people pretending to be marginalized and thats terrible. But this comment was general and that includes Christian’s speaking up against persecution for all the right reasons. Life in North America is not the reality for other parts of the world. Also just because there are a lot of Christian’s in North America doesn’t mean that things do not happen to Christians here either. There is a lot more nuance to this situation

Either make up conspiracy stories in which every tiny slight against your religion's authority is an act of persecution ("Wah, the town council refuses to erect monument to the ten commandments on state land, we're being oppressed!") or push the limits of what your religion is allowed in order to get some of that sweet, sweet persecution ("Wah, the state is forcing Christian businesses to close because we refuse to serve the icky sinner gay couples!")
Either way, the Christian gets to claim the moral high ground and that special favor of God that is reserved for those who hold the faith even when the world is against them.

STIMMT
Maybe the Conservative Christians here in the U.S. need to go to Germany then, because they’re whining about being “targeted by the liberal government” during the pandemic despite all other religious places of worship (Mosques, Temples, etc) being closed for a time being.
It’s like the people who are against vaccines taking on the Star of David ON THEIR OWN WILL and making themselves a comparison to Jews who were forced to wear them and killed. Those people just love to be the victims.

I think the dumbest thing about this movie (which is Saying Something), is that
COVID started in 2020
The movie is set in 2025
You mean to tell me that in *five years*, ALL of humanity created a GLOBAL LANGUAGE, managed to completely eradicate Christianity (and presumably all other religions given that we dont actually see any of them in the movie but then, this movie isn't great at showing, not telling), created a worldwide spread of communism, and managed to get EVERY PERSON ON EARTH except for like these three people to wear masks and stay home?

My thoughts exactly! its scary how self centred and selfish these "Christians" are
I remember when the PM or premier or whichever jurisdiction announced the first lot of restrictions where I lived, when speaking about funerals, he made a huge deal of 'yes, I know how hard this one is going to be,' acknowledging it was the worst restriction of them all. But these writers couldn't think of that?
My mom couldn't be buried & had to be cremated, when being cremated is the only thing she DIDN'T want when she died. It was honestly upsetting I couldn't get her buried like I wanted.
Fr not only did my Grandma die of Covid because they put all the patients in a rehab for old people but we still haven’t been able to have any type of memorial service for her yet and she died in 2021
I think about my dad who lost his sister just as Covid was making its rounds in the west; she passed away of stomach cancer around January of 2020 and my dad was offered to attend her funeral.
