Krystal ended up getting diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, and sought mental health treatmwnt and got official driving classes (which she had never had before). She gave a quote after this:
"I'm not saying that borderline personality disorder is an excuse to drive like an a--hole but it's a large part of why I drove like that. But now I know better and I can do better."
She said that the show was a harsh reality check, and pushed her to get help.

as someone who's life was drastically changed by a car accident, the message to be safe is SO important. i think a lot of people don't actually realize what a big responsibility it is to get behind the wheel. you're taking everyone else's life into your own hands! drive safe everyone :)

    • @catpoke9557
      @catpoke9557 2 роки тому +41

And that thing about how big a responsibility it is, is why I wish my dad wouldn't be so insistent on me learning to drive. I KNOW I would not be able to fulfill that responsibility. Not because I'm a bad person. I literally just wouldn't realize I'm being irresponsible. I have ADHD lol. I can't even pay attention to a UA-cam video that I chose to watch (I went to the comments before even watching,) or remember what tabs I have open. How am I going to keep track of where the cars are going, where I'm going, the speed limit, stop signs, turn signals, my mirrors, and even more. He was explaining it to me just earlier and even while listening I felt confused and overwhelmed, and as he was getting to the climax of the importance of paying attention, I YELLED DOG. Because I saw a random dog. In a random car. And had started ignoring him. On accident.
Not to mention I have anxiety which would not be helping me every time I force myself to risk my life and everyone else's around me as I drive a giant, lethal vehicle. Choking and vomitting while on the road is not productive for attention span OR even being able to see.
Yeah, dad, I'd totally be a great driver. Sure.
Pft, I probably wouldn't even be able to focus on the lessons and I'd forget all the rules before even being able to worry about following them. I couldn't focus on school either.

I started learning to drive when I was fourteen. I had panic attacks almost everytime I drove, so my parents ended up driving me everywhere. I was so embarrassed that I couldn't drive and when people asked me why I didn't have my driver's license yet and I explained how anxious I was, it was usually met with people acting like it was dumb for me to be so anxious. I'm nineteen now and I just got my driver's license last month (after a failed test over the summer). Working through anxiety while driving is so difficult and it doesn't ever completely go away, but it does get a lot better with a lot of work. I appreciate how Kurtis handles talking about the drivers who struggled with anxiety in this show, I'm so used to being treated like that anxiety is stupid.

Hey, I used to have really bad driving anxiety too. I didn't get my license until I was 21. It actually gets so much more manageable when you get your license and just practice driving without anyone with you in the car.
That being said, I have two close friends (we are in our 30s now) who don't have licenses, and 3 of my husband's siblings (all in their late 20s) don't have licenses either. It's nothing to be ashamed of, but it's also something that you can practice and get better at if it's important to you. You just need to really push yourself. I also have a personal conspiracy theory that no one passes their test on the first try so they have to come back and pay again to take the test again.

I've long suspected the show might have a deal with law enforcement to allow the contestants to be honest about their past crimes without fear of getting like arrested for this stuff. There's also the matter of proving which specific crimes they committed when and stuff. I know mostly they don't see consequences but sometimes Cam does call up his buddies on the force in these peoples' hometowns to let them know about them for particularly dangerous drivers.

the funny thing about the shoemaker joke is that’s exactly how a lot of last names came to be , they’re called occupational surnames. For instance John the baker became John baker, Jack the blacksmith became Jack Smith, and Frodo the hunter became Frodo Hunter. Other occupational lastnames are Walker, Cook, Baxter(or Bakster which was the name for a women baker), and carpenter. There are also names that end in “son” that literally just mean “son of ____” (johnson, erikson, peterson, carlson)

Derived from the Germanic Werra, which meant something like fighting or changing, shaking something, tension, bickering etc.
The English emphasized the violent part of of that word and made it into "War" and used it for "war" (the Dutch call that oorlog.)

I really appreciate the acknowledgment of anxiety around driving. I’m only 17 but living in the US the second you turn 16 there’s this immense pressure to get your license. Even when you’re 15 it’s “so do you have your permit yet”. I have an anxiety disorder and find it incredibly difficult to drive. I’ve tried to practice a few times (in an empty parking lot don’t worry lmao) but it always ends in a panic attack. I feel incredibly guilty and frustrated with constantly being asked when I’m getting my license and mocked that I don’t have it. Public transportation and infrastructure is shit in most the US so it can be challenging to get around on your own without a car (Uber exists but that’s a whole other anxiety inducer). People don’t ever seem to understand why I can’t get my license so I really appreciate the attitude towards driving with anxiety here.

Getting my license was an absolute nightmare, i struggle with anxiety and my instructor was a dick, he would yell at me when i made the slightest mistake and he didn't have any patience, at one point i got so frustrated that i started crying in the car. Idk how it works in the US but here you have to take a multiple choice test first and then you can start your driving lessons with a permit that also allows you to drive your own car with an adult as a supervisor. You have to have a sign on your car to show that you're a student driver and people in the street are somehow meaner when they see the sign?? Like give me a break dude im literally learning. • @NathanOhsure

Yep, same here! I'm nearly 20, and in my country you're allowed driving lessons at 17, and to drive by yourself (with license of course) at 18. When I turned 18 everyone would ask me when I was getting my license, if I'd started driving lessons yet, etc etc, and I would always have to explain why not. I just didn't want that kind of stress in my life! Sure, going by car is easier than taking public transport, but I'd seen friends being pressured into driving lessons they didn't want and it was horrible. They had terrible anxiety and mean instructors.
Worst of all? We all still lived at home, and usually their parents owned 2 cars, which both of them needed most days of the week to get to work. So my friends would go for an aimless drive during the weekends just to not lose their driving knowledge, but they barely ever actually got any use out of it.
Now, I'm lucky enough to live somewhere with okay public transport. It's not ideal, and it takes longer than going by car, but mostly it's doable.
I'll get my license when I feel like it, even if that means never!

I distinctly remember beginning to merge and just feeling so terrified and overwhelmed, and I began to have a panic attack and because my parents had to be in the car they told me to just drive and suck it up. I had to pull into a rest stop to calm down and breathe because I felt too close to the other cars/going off the road and I couldn’t see from my tears and I was anxious that someone was going to crash into me and my parents were watching my every move. Unfortunately I live in an area with absolutely no public transportation and it’s impossible to walk anywhere, and being 18 and having everyone drive you around is quite embarrassing. I had anxiety so bad that I avoided driving for like 5 or 6 years. It was pretty bad...
I HAD to get a car for work though and sort of forced myself into an informal kind of exposure therapy (don’t recommend doing this just saying I did, it was probably a very bad idea).
What’s ironic now though is that it’s been a while since all of that, and honestly driving is one of my favorite things to do. I go on crazy-long road trips frequently, I would up driving for a living for a little while, and my car was a crazy good investment, because there were nights where I had nowhere but my car to sleep. Thank you Kurtis for speaking up about driving anxiety. My partner got into a very serious accident due to a careless driver from a company and that has resulted in serious damage of her spine and has chronic pain because of it & still needs surgery. As for me, I’m 24 almost 25 and I still don’t have my license because I have really bad anxiety about driving due to a lot of things I was exposed to as a child, and I wish my family understood that. I really wish I didn’t need a license in order to get a job. If I could avoid driving forever I would.

I got my license at 18, I'm 24 and generally feel okay driving but always feel this underlying impending doom that I will die in my car. I swear every time I get in my car a quick thought goes through my mind that says "I'm going to die here." I cant help it. And it's mostly because public transportation in my country is basically nonexistent and there are so, so so many cars. And most of them drive terribly. I see multiple people running red lights daily. And that's nothing compared to the bizarre things I see people do on the road. It's terrifying. I see more reckless, aggressive driving than good driving. It's a nightmare every time I get behind the wheel.

    • @LovelyDollyDays
      @LovelyDollyDays 2 роки тому +3

I am so sorry for your partner and I wish that they heal as much as possible and can support. I have chronic pain from a condition that affects my spine, so I have some idea of what it's like to go through surgery and pain. And due to my health (I was born with a genetic condition) I have never had the ability to drive. My anxiety is real and it's okay to admit that in certain situations, I wouldn't make good decisions. I push myself where it benefits me and those I love, like making sure my anxiety and other mental health issues don't hurt me or anyone else. That is why not driving is a good choice for some people, and it doesn't have to be a negative thing. Thank you for sharing, it's vulnerable to put your feelings out there. Some unsolicited advice from someone who has kinda been there?
It's perfectly normal and legitimate to not want to drive and you don't need to know how to drive to do anything, except be a professional driver! In the United States (I'm assuming you live here or someplace with similar labor laws) Interviewers for jobs ask if you have a reliable means of transportation, and the bus is, so just say yes and don't mention that you cannot drive unless you are saying you can't operate a fork lift or something! They can't discriminate based on you taking the bus, it's a legal issue; that is actually a legal protection you have. Interviewers are only allowed to ask if you can get to work, not how. It's part of US labor law and most other countries have similar protections, since it falls under a pretty broad "right to freedom, right to choose, right to choose where you work" legal standard, so most countries with legal systems and labor laws protect this right. As long as you can get to work, they can't discriminate based on how.
We are told we have to learn to drive to be successful, but it is certainly not true! Not being able to drive does not hold you back as long as you have a means of transportation. I hope you live someplace where you can find a means of transportation that works for you. I have social anxiety as well, so tips for the bus are: big, noise-cancelling headphones that say "don't talk to me, I can't hear you", sunglasses at the ready to avoid eye-contact, and a scarf or shawl to wrap around me, which makes me feel safe. I always sit in a window seat and closer to a door if I can, but I have come to trust the bus most of the time, as I take it so frequently, it has become familiar. We have to wear masks on the bus right now, so I actually like how that makes me feel safer too. Most of my face is covered, headphones always, and I mostly ignore people if they try to talk to me, just because it's not rude to prioritize your own comfort levels.
I know I info dumped, disregard if this is overstepping! I'm surprised at how much this video and the comments got to me! Wait, no I'm not, I am an empathetic, disabled nondriver who is seeing how many younger people have anxiety surrounding driving, and some feeling bad about it.

“I have to drink a couple beers to calm my nerves before driving.” So. Let me get this straight. You experience high levels of anxiety that make it difficult difficult for you to drive. And to solve this problem, instead of trying any combination of the following: going to your doctor/a psychiatrist to get anxiety medication prescribed, seeing a therapist to work on strategies for managing anxiety, looking up meditations and/or breathing exercises you could do before driving, putting on calming music or an audiobook/podcast while you drive, and taking public transportation when possible, you just went “Ah yes. Alcohol. That’ll fix it.” *How the fuck did you ever get your license???*

Fr, I had anxiety issues when I learned how to drive because driving in a lot of traffic made me feel immense pressure. Sometimes the nerves got to me and I made dumb mistakes. However, I got help to manage my anxiety and also learning techniques to make my driving safer and calmer in difficult situations which not only made me less anxious but also more confident.

Well obviously people aren’t gonna have last names like that in the future because people aren’t making new last names anymore, everyone has one. And if someone changed their last name they would be wanting to change it to something they liked the sound of. When last names first started becoming a thing, it was based off of what that person was known for. So if they were known as being the blacksmith or if they were known for being the son of someone. And everyone had their own unique name. But then rules came into place that your family inherited your last name. So Johnny might of been called Johnny Jameson because he was the son of James but now suddenly his family has to inherit his last name and suddenly they are all called Jameson too. My last name is Cook, it’s obvious to tell that at some point there was someone in my family who was a cook.

When I was 13yrs old I was hit by an 18yr old high school senior while I was in the cross walk. After she hit me she drove all the way down the road before stopping to see if I was okay. She was so upset she couldn't even call 911 to help me. Thankfully a good samaritan stopped and called for me. After months of arguing with her parents insurance they finally agreed to pay for my medical costs plus a little extra. But here's the kicker! The judge said she was so young she doesn't deserve to have her liscence taken away and my lawyer agreed so he didn't fight it.
My mom was a civilian working at the county jail and saw a familiar name on some paperwork. So she looked her up and oh my good god... This girl went on to cause FOUR more traffic accidents involving pedestrians. Swiping a bicyclist and knocking them off, texting and driving and almost hitting another person in a cross walk, but it wasn't until she almost ran down a construction worker that a judge finally thought "Hmm, she's kind of a danger to society. We should probably take her driving privileges away." She was barely 20 when this happened.
So, yeah, this show doesn't surprise me in the least.

Honestly for everyone struggling with anxiety when you get behind the wheel, you're 100% valid. I used to get such bad anxiety when we had to drive on the highway and I used to tell myself that I would never drive when I got older. The first 3 years of me driving I never got onto the highway and when I first did, I had a panic attack. I was forced to drive 5 hours on the highway when I was moving and it was honestly the worst experience of my life. My little brother was in the passenger seat and I was so terrified of crashing because I didn't want anything bad to happen to him. Thankfully I've been healing and I started to drive on the highway earlier this year. It's still so scary to think that when driving, one small mistake could end your life and the life of innocent people around you.

Fast forward 3 years: driving is literally like walking down the side walk to me. By doing it every day, repetition, the car feels like an extension of me. I'm in complete control. Obviously you gotta look out for OTHER drivers, because their dumbass mistakes can run into you, but I'm so use to the flow, you can spot outliers. Since my mom is scared of highways, my friends dad took it seriously and offered to drive with me. I have friends that go on with full fledged text conversations while going 80mph, and I'm just white knuckling my lil hand holder thingy, just knowing if somebody ELSE happens to make a mistake and your too preoccupied to drive defensively, we're all dead.

When I woke up I had to reteach myself everything. So I can only imagine how horrible it must have been for him, 7 weeks. That’s horrible. And it was a car accident that put him there. So to then put him in an environment where he has to drive again and is surrounded by drivers with horrible problems. That’s just cruel. too many of y'all are asking "why haven't these people had their licenses revoked yet" and not enough are asking "who tf let them pass their road tests in the first place"
the exception being mike because again, literal brain damage
but if i got behind the wheel and had a panic attack no respectable proctor would be like "oh that's ok sweetie here i'll pass you anyways"
i'm not saying ppl with anxiety don't deserve to drive, i used to get really anxious driving as well and it took years for me to be able to drive w/o having at least a mild panic attack
but it was also a full 5 years after i got my permit that i finally was able to take my road test and get my license
idk i just don't understand how these ppl were allowed on the road to begin with

I failed my practical test the first time and then made some really stupid mistakes the second time. The examiner was really nice about it though and said it wouldn't be a reason to fail me again, I just have to be a bit more careful.
So I got my license then and there but on the way back my driving instructor told me how he shouldn't have let me pass and that it was a mistake - way to make me feel good about the whole thing.
I still barely drive on my own and just prefer to have someone next to me who can help me out just in case or who I can ask if I don't know something but I wouldn't say I'm a terrible driver.
However, my driving instructor apparently thought the opposite but I still got my license. So I guess that's one way it could go

yeah, when i was in driving classes my driving instructor straight up told me like "you get too anxious when driving, and i really think you should wait until you're more comfortable to get your license", and honestly i am super thankful that he was SO honest about it and didn't just keep me in and allowed me to drive on the road when i was that anxious about it!

As an albertan, we are horrific drivers. Last week my friend was no joke denied a license for stopping while a pedestrian was crossing the road because it "could've resulted in a car crashing into you". For a such a dumb province, we could REALLY use some better public transit!

wait so, you aren’t supposed to yield to pedestrians in Canada?

    • @rVnsunshine

@@certified_sad no it’s not. Pedestrians have the right of way, ALWAYS. Whether or not they are jaywalking (which most aren’t, as all intersections are crosswalks even if they aren’t marked.) a car must stop for pedestrians crossing, and if they hit a pedestrian, legally the driver is always at fault unless proven otherwise in extenuating circumstances. I’d encourage you to take another look at your states drivers manuals.
Edit: if they are jaywalking, the right of way goes to traffic, but this is the only situation where traffic holds right of way.

Thank you for acknowledging that driving isn't for everyone. I have pretty bad ADHD and anxiety and I'm not planning on getting a driving licence any time soon, if ever. I know people can have these issues and still be good drivers, but I just know that I wouldn't be.

I also have ADHD and anxiety. However, driving has always sent me into a 'flow' sort of state- I enjoy it a lot. That said, you're of course completely valid in not wanting to drive. Honestly, I don't understand the social pressure to push people to drive when they don't want to- that just creates unsafe situations all around.

Yeah absolutely, honestly if my city had better public transport I probably wouldn't have learned to drive, or would drive less. I'm glad I know how to drive, but it's definitely not for everyone

My dad wants to teach me how to drive, tho he'll probably never get around to it anyway, I don't think I'll be able to do it. I'm so afraid of losing focus or freezing up at a critical moment, or panicking and then crashing (I don't think it's an irrational fear because I actually do react like this to other situations) My dad says that my fear would make me a safe driver apparently lol? Anyway same it made me feel a lot better to hear Kurtis say that, because I just haven't heard anyone tell me that before 😭
