I bought a CD version of Bags Groove after learning about it while watching the TV series Bosch! The character was really into vinyl jazz. I couldn’t find a vinyl version at the time, but the CD is great.
You are THE MAN! Bags Groove is fantastic! Thank you for the inspiration. I am firing up my rega P10 now and will start listening to the ones I have. Peace out!!
Great stuff you picked up! I always love to watch these and find great new (to me) music. I also totally understand the sports situation when NFL, College football is full on, and the World series is coming up, and NHL just starting things gets hectic. Then college basketball and NBA comes around in a few months haha.
Hi Kenny! One of my favorites that my dad turned me on to when I was a boy is Any Time...Any Groove! by The Don Scaletta Trio. A Capitol Records release from 1965. York's Sauna alone makes it worth the price of admission. It needs a rerelease if it hasn't been already,
Jutta Hipps very cool downloded some albums via UA-cam music, I'm old school, Art Blakey, the Jaz Messengers, Charlie Parker, one of my fsvorites Oliver Nelsons Big Band Pete and Connie Candolie,, the complete Lionel Hampton Quartet, so many great tunes, good listening.
I'm almost jealous of the skill this man displays in his record buying, but I will instead benefit from the knowledge . The mention of the lighthouse triggered me, as I am trying to build a little sub collection of live recordings from that club. It's right off of one of the best bike paths in the world, and as a kid I would often stop by outside to take a listen , hoping the top half of a dutch door would be open for cooling, which allowed a clear view of the stage plus unobstructed hearing. As I got older and taller, they would sometimes let my underaged self in, and I saw a few shows as an adult. The club changed with the times, the last time I reached to open the door, the handle was vibrating so hard from the noise level inside that this old man didn't even go in. Still, I am glad the place is still operating , and now has a dance floor plus a jazz brunch on Sunday, last I heard.
Another great enthusiastic video which gives me inspiration to stick with the music. Would love to hear the Gary McFarland LP with that stunning line up of players. Shame the LP was not packaged better. BTW I just uploaded a couple of videos of my Quintet rehearsals. But basically these sessions double as recording sessions. I have a cd of that Thad Jones LP . Always loved that cover . We used to take lessons with Barry Harris quite often in London. Peter Ind used to run a club in London, saw some excellent players there like Walter Bishop jr . I had a few bass lessons with Peter too
Got Elegant Angel for $5NZ a few days ago. Its great when you refer to a record I've got. I recommend you read 3 Shades of Blue by James Kaplan., if uou havent already. Itll turn anyone into a jazz fan overnight. I loved it
Great picks, Kenny. I was wondering if Jutta Hipp album was worthy to buy. Now that I see you have purchased it, maybe I consider it. I already have Lee Morgan's Taru. Great album. I don't know why its release was long delayed. It's not the only case I've seen regarding Blue Note catalogue. I agree with you on Miles Davis' Bags Groove. I have it on a japanese edition. Sounds great. Blessings!
I have a Sonny Rollins album on Prestige with some tracks accompanied by the MJQ with Kenny Clarke on drums and there is an interesting oddity: Miles Davis on piano on one track, ‘I Know’. I play this album quite regularly.
@@kennysaudiophilerecordreviews Unfortunately he doesn’t treat us to a Miles Davis piano solo but stays in the background after a short intro. Oscar Peterson did not feel threatened.
Purchased my first Blue Note "Tone Poet" series earlier this week. Horace Silver's "Silver's Serenade." Now I truly understand what all the hype has been surrounding these remastered records, they sound great! The soundfloor was flat, very little if any, snap or crackle can be heard. The music never sounded better. I will definitely be making additional purchases of this series. Sidenote: The model on the cover of Al DiMeola's "Elegant Gypsy" is Janice Dickerson. She was one of the MANY women accusing Bill Cosby of assault. Sadly, she was found to be lying about her accusations and went further to dismiss them in her book. Although I've never heard this album, as a young teenager in the late 70's I thought she was the most beautiful woman (Elegant, even) I'd ever seen and almost bought this album just for the cover. Maybe I'll give it a listen now. Additionally sidenote: On Miles Davis "Bag's Groove" much to do was made about Miles being overheard on this recording telling Monk to lay out during his trumpet solo (Not certain which cut or if I even have the right album). However, my brother-in-law would always bring this fact up whenever he would put this record on. I guess Miles wasn't supposed to tell Monk things like this and became sort of a scandal. Amazing how much what qualifies as a scandal has changed through out the years. Finally, per your recommendation, I also purchased the 50th anniversary of Curtis Mayfield's "Super Fly" soundtrack. Again, just a magnificent presentation from the original analog tapes. The extras were also a plus. The second album included are mostly instrumental tracks played in the film, and presented here just as they were with the 25th anniversary issued on CD. Again, enjoyed your post. Happy listening.
I will definitely look into checking some of these out. Also, I just came across a channel with a playlist you might like? The channel is (Blueberry Sunset). The songs that they have listed aren't what I would say are full songs, but quick whips of maybe 3 minute jazz takes that are good for probably driving around town or just doing chores around the house. Enjoy👍
I am always astounded at how poorly packaged some records come! These vendors must be getting returns. They should learn their lesson. BTW, the Lee Morgan Ta Ru and Sarah Vaughan’s Sassy records are outstanding.
Mr. Kenny, I am wondering if you had heard of 'The New Sound' by Geordie Greep which has come out last week. I consider you a jazz historian, and am interested to hear your opinion on this young man's record. There are elements of some Latin-infused jazz fusion, but it is mostly art-rock, noisy frenetic and unconventional. With your rich background listening to jazz, what do you dislike or appreciate in the sounds of this record?
That is a musician and album that I'm not familiar with and I will definitely try to listen to it in the future, thank you very much for the recommendation 😊
hi Kenny, is there a good email for my team to contact you? wondering if you review new jazz from living artists who release audiophile vinyl (Kevin Gray mastered, RTI pressed just like Tone Poets)
I believe the only current or living musician that I reviewed in jazz on my channel is Patricia Barber. Non jazz was Beyonce. Reviewing new or current artists is something that I may consider in the future at some point. If I were to receive any music regardless of the source, there is no guarantee that I would review it on my channel, the music would have to be at a acceptable standard. If you want to give me a email address of your team, then I will respond and they will have my email address and we can go from there.
Kenny, $39.00????? Back in the early 90’s when I started collecting jazz LP’s, both new and second hand, new OJC albums were priced at about 10 to 12 bucks. Even Blue Note and Impulse reissues at that time were under $20. Yikes.
@@kennysaudiophilerecordreviews Here’s something about JUTTA HIPP . So she came over to the States under the auspices of LEONARD FEATHER, hoping for a great career. It didn’t turn out that way, even with a few Blue Notes on the shelves. To read anything about her she then disappeared from the music scene, and faded into obscurity…according to the tale when Blue Note rereleased her albums in the early 90’s they didn’t even know where to send her royalty checks, although she was living a “normal” life in Queens, NYC. As it happens, she was also an artist, and indeed had for a long time belonged to the art league that I’ve been involved with for 15 years, though before my era (it’s in eastern Queens, in the Douglaston neighborhood). We even have one of her drawings hanging in the office that she did during a live model class.
Kenny: Enjoyed this post. What is the Miles Davis '63-'64 boxed set all about. Can you describe it a bit more? Who published it, etc.? Is it on You Tube? That Lee Morgan Taru session is great.
Sorry for the confusion ...the set is called "Miles In France 1963 & 1964 - Miles Davis Quintet: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 8"...if you do a Google search all the information is there.
@@kennysaudiophilerecordreviews Kenny I do have this boxed set. I was just a bit confused by the name. It's the "Bootleg Series." Thanks for getting back.
Man Kenny, you start out early. Great stuff as usual. Not cool how that record was packaged. I recently discovered that Miles Groove at a local library; it's really nice. Lately I've been listening to a lot of solo jazz recordings. As a musician playing in this format you are exposed and almost naked to the audience. Do you have any favorites for jazz soloists instrumentals? Solo guitar, solo piano etc.?
@@kennysaudiophilerecordreviews I agree, great album. I have most of Keith Jarrett's recordings and quite a fan of his. To give your stereo system a real audiophile workout, his solo album "Staircase" on ECM is something else.
Kenny, maybe you can explain this, in my early listening days mono was considered undesirable as all players came through the same speakers whereas stereo duplicated the different players coming from different areas experience. What am I missing with this current mindset? Btw the Al Dimeola album is my no. 1 desert island disc. Mediterranean Sundance never fails to blow me away, Paca Lucia a fantastic flamenco guitarist is brilliant.
