Great stuff Kenny. Glad you are giving some airplay to the dear old CD. The format gets so unfairly hammered because of the vinyl revival but it is a fabulous way to listen to Jazz. Even the great sound engineers will agree how well done the mastering for CDs is done for Jazz. (AND no pops and clicks ruining the sound of those superb live performances!!) Cheers from Oz
@@Raypirri Even the late Rudy Van Gelder said that the digital/CD format was superior to analog/vinyl and that he would never go back to analog mastering.
Rosa Passos' "Amorosa" in amazing, one of the finest albums of the last 20 years. And you are so right, the sound is top notch. There's a track on there that's so meltingly sad ("Retrato em Branco e Preto") that I can barely bear to listen to it, and I mean that as the highest compliment. Most of the rest is the best kind of joyous bossa operating at the peak. Pretty close to a 10 album for me.
Thanks for giving some coverage to cd’s! Some new jazz releases with great music and sound: Matt Slocum-“Lion Dance” John Schofield Trio-“Uncle John’s Band” Steve Ash-“You And The Night” Bill Charlap Trio-“And Then Again”
OMG1 Where do I begin? First I appreciate you giving some more love to us CD collectors such as myself. I have most of the Miles Davis' CD box set. I also have a lot of Brad's and Kurt's music. I've seen both of them perform live. I also have the Brazilian singer you showed. Now you're speaking my language. I will definitely have some suggestions for you. Please don't do anything to put your channel in trouble with YT. This was sweet!!!
Kenny, I think vinyl and CDs can coexist together…there are great and poor records in both formats. I think newer and more current Jazz musicians always get overlooked by UA-cam reviewers? There are some great music that sounds FANTASTIC on CDS. Check out Bob James Trio Making live. Check out guitar players like Charlie Hunter, Mike Stern, Oz Noy Robben Ford and of course the two greats Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour. Steve Gadd has a few great CDS with a cast of All STAR sessions players. Steve Gadd’s self titled Steve Gadd Band and 70 strong. Brad Mehldau also has a few CDS with Joshua Redman a FANTASTIC sax player who also has some GREAT albums of his own. Melhldau, Christian McBride, Redman and the great drummer Brian Blades have a few projects together. The YellowJackets also have some current releases that are great jazz recordings. They have always been a cut above what you would call smooth jazz??? Their music is well composed and these cats have serious chops. Check out Coherence, Time Squared and Parallel Motion and many more from these guys. Micheal Franks, has always had some great jazz / pop albums - he has always used some of the best musicians in the business including the GREAT Joe Sample, Steve Gadd and Larry Carlton. There’s all lot more out there…can’t list them all LOL I like all the old jazz Miles, Coltrane all the Blue Note, Prestige, Verve and all that great from the 50’s and 60’s All these current Jazz musicians are Great and they are putting out great music! So Yeah! I enjoy old and new and Vinyl and Digital. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK! 🎸🎼🎷🎵🎹
Thank you very much for watching my video and taking the time to post some of your recommendations 😊...I have a few of them in my collection, especially a lot of the Michael Franks albums as I was a big fan in high school.
Here's the guy who said what I wanted to say. Loving CDs, too, and especially engaging with, and talking about, the music of the current jazz artists. I love the old masters, but jazz is a living art and a lot of the new stuff is AMAZING, and it's happening around the world: London/UK, Japan, Brasil, LA/USA, Poland, etc.
Hi Kenny. Small world, my dentist here in Japan is an amateur jazz bassist, and lent Patitucci his bass when he came to Japan. I figured Patitucci was famous enough to be without money problems, but my dentist mentioned J.P. was struggling to pay for his daughter's college tuition at that time. I have and love that Chick Corea Akoustic Band CD, but just could not get into his Elektric Band stuff. Of his electric line-ups, his earlier RTF album, "Where Have I Known You Before"is my favorite. The range of styles on that album alone is mind boggling. Oh ... and Rosa Passos! Nice! I have a couple of CDs by her, but haven't listened in awhile. My go-to Brazilian singers are Elis Regina, Flora Purim, Bebel Gilberto (Joao's daughter), Joyce, and Leny Andrade. Nara Leao has a classic bossa style, but Gal Costa is a bit harsh for my ears. So many greats from Brazil. If interested in some earlier great harmonies from Brazil, I recommend Quarteto Em Cy and Boca Livre. Boca Livre has a great cover of Milton Nascimento's "Caxanga" on UA-cam, but it might not be available for viewing in the states. Cheers from Japan
Thank you very much for your awesome comments, I really appreciate it. I have a couple of Bebel Gilberto CDs and she has a great vocal style Thank you very much for watching my videos from Japan 😊

Hello Kenny, Brad Mehdlau has some great stuff out there, I have several of his recordings and I think his series "Art of the Trio" are among his best works. Here are a few of my favorite audiophile quality CDs with great performances. I have many others but too many to list. In recent years I've appreciated quite a number of European artists and Polish Jazz artists. The Marcin Wasilewski - January (SHM CD) sounds phenomenal. What a coincidence. Precisely yesterday I was listening to the "Jack Johnson" CD after a very long time. And I ended up loving it much more than ever before. I also listened to `Agharta" and "Pangea", two double albums also by Miles. Great stuff. Thanks a lot for your recommendations on this video. I will look for those albums. Greetings and blesings.
Great selection of Miles box set, you just picked up his latest that came out Thursday but I will wait for your review before I give you my opinion. There is a Miles Davis 37CD box set from Japan called the Original Jacket Collection that you might want to add to your collection if you don't have it
Great video as usual. If you haven’t tried him yet, a favorite of mine is tenor saxophonist Teodross Avery, who I have followed since his debut CD in 1996. Now a college professor, he still records and plays in the LA area. Recent CDs include Harlem Stories: the music of Thelonious Monk, and Affer the Rain: a night for Coltrane. Both excellent CDs and I believe Harlem Nights is live.
Miles Davis’ producer Teo Macero several times remarked that he strongly opposed releasing the “unreleased” material. He said that the final released albums represent the final definitive performances that he and Miles wanted the public to listen to. Everything else, he said, were inferior performances that they did not want released. He said that these “extended” albums were the idea of the Columbia bean counters and marketing types who wanted to squeeze every penny they could out of the recordings. Neither Miles nor Macero wanted this.
I personally love those sets (and the Beatles sets over the last few years). I thoroughly enjoy listening to them and it takes the fans behind the scenes of the creative process.
@ As Mr. Macero and many others have repeatedly pointed out, an important and essential, if not critical, part of the creative process takes place in the editing and mixing room. Teo Macero was to Miles Davis what George Martin was to the Beatles.
You're quite right about Kurt Elling's voice being an honorable mention as one of the better singers of all time. If I'm not mistaken, I think I had him on the list as being one of them a while back? As far as the Brad Mehldau album, I think your critique is also on point about it not having a wider range of instrumentation. Background music while you're eating in an elligant restaurant is definitely what it sounds like while not being a terrible listen. As far as jazz albums from the early 2000's that you might want to mention or order on C.D. and mention it in one of your videos next year when you discuss albums from that time period is, Billy Bang and Frank Lowe album (An Evening in Grand Rapids. I think it's one of the best or, in my opinion, maybe the best jazz album from that time frame that's not talked about?👍
There's a lot of interesting stuff going on with the London jazz scene if you want newer stuff.
