Kenny…How can I be the only person to mention Maurice White’s Kalimba playing on so many of those early Earth, Wind and Fire Jazz jams?!? 😳 He was the Jimi Hendrix of Kalimba players and YES I consider EWF a Jazz band among many other musical genres they touched on. Just listen to New World Symphony or Sun Goddess off their 1975 Gratitude Album. Dang Kenny…throw me a bone. Maurice was a studio percussionist with Chess Records in the 60’s and EWF does not get the love they deserve in the Jazz World. From 1969-1975 they experimented with so much psychedelic soul and Jazz. In my opinion there is no greater band that included elements of jazz, R&B, psychedelic soul, gospel, free jazz as well as rock in their music. I also feel they’re one of the most influential bands of all time. Zanzibar and Clover off Head to the Sky are incredible Jazz jams and Energy off their 1971 album The Need Of Love shows off those great horn players. Am I standing on this limb alone regarding EWF being one of the greatest Jazz bands of all time Kenny?!? Cmon now Kenny! I’ll end on this…regarding sound quality Zanzibar on my mid fi system is amazing on CD on my headphones with Larry Dunn’s electric piano literally lifting me up and taking me for a magic carpet ride. Where is the Love Kenny!!

I am a big Stan Getz fan too. My number one recording is not available on vinyl but can be found on CD. It's a great collaboration between Stan Getz and Kenny Barron on piano, The Lost Sessions. It could be one of his last recordings. I have two copies, one for the car and one for the house. Kenny Barron and Stan compliment each other so beautifully.

I have about 6,000 LPs a couple thousand 45's and maybe a Thousand CD's I sold off a lot of CDs over the years. I started collecting in 1986 but my parents had records and I had children records. I used to buy records from the used section at local Record Stores for a couple bucks mostly Punk & Metal. and about 25 years ago I discovered that thrift stores carried records but hardly find anything good these days there.

Hey Kenny, I have quite a few Rhino Hi Fi records, both Rock and Jazz, it is an excellent series. One to grab next is Ornette Coleman’s Change of the Century. It is mind blowing. I love Sweet Rain, Stan is really pushed by that young rhythm section. I have a super clean 1st press so I skipped the reissue.

Really like your takes, kenny. Man, for jazz vocals, Eddie Jefferson gets my vote. I think you're familiar with him, if not great, lis😢ten!!

The John Coltrane OLE' song is one that I listen to as a piece instead of a sond and is one of my favorite jazz pieces of all time. It's a piece that goes on my top ten list near the top 5 jazz songs or pieces ever made. Very few artists make me sit down and admire their talent, and John Coltrane is one of them.👍

Kenny, FYI, the 45 cut breaks up one of the songs from my understanding as this has been done before by another label.

Sweet Rain is an exceptional Getz album. I have loved it since I bought it about 50 years ago.

I bought the Captain Marvel lp when it 1st hit , Chicks tunes were great but I don't think Stan really fit in with the band. His best work was when he got sober the last 5 years of his life and recorded a few sides with Kenny Barron. Those are all 5* recordings.

(I wonder if "Cocoon" song might be considered eerie, w/ an insinuation of Jazz.. )

600ish, some from my parents going back to the 50's but most either bought as they came out or car boot sale/market traders. Nowadays discogs for older ones and some new pressings by modern artists. All played on the same turntable for 30+ years - not audiophile/listening room, but living 'house music'.

I had about 600 singles and 300 albums stolen about 8years ago so buying my collection I have now 3500 albums and 800 cds tapes got about 60 tapes bought recently most charity shops love your post.

Hey Kenny…Happy New Year and thank you for all your enjoyable audio and music content. George Benson was my musical God in the 80’s and Sade my musical Goddess. Absolutely loved everything those two put out. You briefly mentioned The Style Council. They put out a Jazz laced album in 1984 titled “My Ever Changing Moods” (I think on CD it was titled “Blue Cafe” and has a more upbeat version of My Ever Changing Moods. It’s an album I would highly recommend you listen to and I’d love to get your thoughts on it. Paul Weller has quite an extensive and successful musical career with different bands in England such as The Jam and also has a prolific solo career as well. Tracy Thorn who later went on to head up the band Everything But The Girl is a featured vocalist on Cafe Blue and is amazing in my opinion. Check it out when you can. And last, I’ll simply bring this up as it relates with the 80’s. I’ve never heard you mention Paul Hardcastle in any of your videos. In 1984 he released the song “Rainforest” and “19” that were very popular at the same time Herbie Hancock released “RockIt”. I’m curious to your thoughts on Paul Hardcastle in the 80’s as well as his Synth Jazz work since then. I like him. Thanks again Kenny. I’ve really enjoyed your channel…Todd

What is that In A Silent Way box on your table there?

I had not heard of Mark Murphy before. I was able to come up with a decent vinyl rip of the full Stolen Moments album. Unfortunately it was MP3, but at least I could give it a listen. I mostly agree with your performance rating. Mark Murphy was a little bit uneven, super excellent in some spots and ok in others. The backing musicians were good but not stellar. I might rate like 8.5. The sound rating is where we differ more. Mark Murphy’s vocals are very closely mic’ed. There are some places where the microphone is overdriven resulting in distortion. Also the equalization on the mic was not flat, it was rather boomy. This really sounds like a dynamic microphone almost like the cheap and ubiquitous Shure SM58. From an Audiophile perspective for vocals I want dynamics, clarity, space, air, little touches of warmth, sweetness, sparkle. In this recording the vocals are pretty much the exact opposite of this. The rest of the band was recorded pretty well. I would say it’s not really an audiophile recording. I’ll be nice and give it a 7. Setting aside my critique of the sound I thoroughly enjoyed this album. I will absolutely remember it and the crazy talented Mark Murphy and will listen to it again! After all, I’m Here-for-the-music-Mikey!
