In terms of the Christian ethos, self-harm and suicide is a sin because we shouldn’t desecrate the bodies God gave us. Much of society has absorbed this and thus its response to diseases like addiction can be very harsh and unsympathetic. The speaker turns it around and emphasizes the choices that someone makes are not always tied to their value as a person. From that perspective, the one who knowingly harms themselves (accepts their sin) can be viewed as more righteous than the person who high-handedly judges others without practicing compassion. The singer takes on an almost Christ-like stance of mercy towards those that the most “pious” people of society choose to look down on.
As one of members of this group said : "This song called "Chop Suey", because that's what we are as a band, as musicians"(vegetables, pasta, sauce, etc.(we are different and unique)). And what about meaning of the song - the song is about how differently we are treated depending on how we leave life. Everyone deserves to die. Like, if I was going to die of an overdose, they might say I deserved it because I was abusing dangerous drugs. Hence the line "I cry when angels deserve to die". Excerpts Of " Father! Into Your hands I give my spirit" and "Why have You forsaken me?» they are references to the death of Jesus on the cross, since, according to the Gospels, this was one of the seven sayings of Jesus before his death.
Ok, from what I’ve heard it was that they wanted it to be called “su*cide”, but some board didn’t agree with that so they renamed it “chop suey”, as like in they chopped the word su*cide, and also like a play with wods due to the Chinese dish.
The song directly quotes Jesus on the cross: “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Followed by another quote from Christ on the cross:”Why have you forsaken me?” That plays into the words “Self-righteous suicide”. Christ, according scripture, could have refused the cross, but he accepted it willingly. “Angels deserve to die” describes that Christ was sinless (purity of an angel), but willingly took the sin of the world upon him. At that moment, when G-d saw his son, covered in sin, he turned his back and allowed Christ to die and be the sin sacrifice. That same moment, Christ felt the absence of his father and proclaimed “why have you forsaken me”? This song, at least the chorus, is the Gospel....wether it was intentional or not.

I agree with The Red Ranter, that's what I think this song is about. It makes sense with the lyrics. The lyrics themselves refer to Jesus' "self righteous suicide" as in dying on the cross. When the ones who arguably are to blame (the demons/fallen angels) deserve to die. Hence "when angels deserve to die". Then god forsakes him, the ultimate betrayal. It shows the hypocrisy inherent in a lot of religious stories ("there you go creating another fable"). This song is one of many things that made me eventually become agnostic. The writer of this song was clearly once religious and got disillusioned with the whole thing. It's why other than being a great song, this song also really speaks to me.

I really like when people stops music and think about lyrics. You don't only need to read books to learn. There's a lot of wisdom on rap and rock lyrics.
The songs original title was actually suicide. But this happened during the 9-11 so they had to change it. At the beginning of the song you will hear serj say “roll suicide”
I remember System of a Down had a free concert in LA. When too many people showed up the concert was cancelled. The fans rushed the stage and tore everything up.
The songs original title was "suicide" but they decided to change it because their lawyers advised against it. If you've ever known a person who killed themselves you can understand what this song means. It's the understanding that sometimes depression eats a soul so profoundly that they don't see any other way to make the pain go away.
I think Chop Suey was his singing style at the onset. Insane jam! Incredible performance. 100% from the vocalist, piano at the end, so many professional miscal elements in this song. When have we not cried out to the heavens as people?

"Angels deserve to die", because even with good intentions only the person itself knows what is truly better for him/her.... it is your life, you're yourself, the ultimate freedom you have is to choose how, when and where to die (or not if you've choose yourself to not decide upon it) but no other person or religion should ever be allowed to decide how you should live your life unless you're ok with it.

It's called Chop Suey as a play on words...it was supposed to be called Suicide but the label made them change the title...they took it from the line Self righteous Suicide (Right-chop Suey-side)...and yea it was supposed to be released the 2nd week of Sept 2001....
I definitely see the connection between rap and rock. What a lot of people don't realize about rock music is how deep a lot of the messages are in the songs. This is especially true with metal. I would really like to see you guys break down the following songs: 1.) Morph 2.) Neon Gravestones 3.) Kitchen Sink All are by the group twenty one pilots. I really just want to see ya'll's take on what the bars mean.
I am a metal guitarist and sometimes it includes rap, sometimes it is more like Deathcore with a lot of screaming, then neoclassical, and tons more. I mean, it is rare lyrics don't rhyme but not always in a pop/rap style. Though I like to play old glam rock like Guns N' Roses. Though I like Rage Against The Machine, SOAD, and Falling In Reverse are my main, but I also get in to Metallica, Black Veil Brides (closest to that old school metal vibe), AC/DC. A really cool old school collab was "Bring The Noise" with Anthrax and Public Enemy. That song helped to see onstage production value for rap.
Yo yall usually kill it with the reactions but lately yall are fuckin slaughtering the reactions. Keep it up boys. We need that popular monster - falling in reverse
the fundamental difference i realized about rock and rap is that rock is alot more emotional while rap is alot more expressive for example rock music doesnt have complex lyrics and is relatively easy to break down because the musicians and the singers themselves set the tone of the message while the message is being delivered with rap its is almost completely different; delivery (flow) is important but the art of rapping is also immensely dependent on lyricism to express the tone of the message(s) (rap is not fixed, its flexible) i dont know if this makes much sense to most people but im sure you guys know what im talking about right?
Y’all experts and very educated. I will never listen to this song the same after that new perspective. “Maybe angels deserve to die because they’re too good for the world” holy shit my brothas! That’s a bar! Y’all break down everything! Nothing goes over your head.

Just found u guys yesterday,,, am loving it!! Just like you guys posting ur reactions and analyzing different music ,, i grew up listening to EVERYTHING,,, Die hard Eazy, Bone , E-40, MC8 and Spice1 fan,,, yet more of the actual music I owned was Hair Band and Heavy Metal. Loved my mainsteam and Mom always had country on. I love to see how you guys appreciate that it's all music, and that you'd be surprised if you give other genres a chance, u might find ur new favorite artist for this year?! I have not looked to see all of who u have viewed so far,,, but totally love what ur doin. Couple more common ones i was wondering if you had done was groups like White or Rob Zombie, Korn, and Limp Bizkit for example. Or Metallica, Megadeth, and Black Sabbath's WARPIGS is a staple of Hard Rock fans with Ozzy Osborne at vocals. I am sure you might find something like RAMMMSTEIN who are world famous German metal that was popular here for couple years with songs like DU HAST and SEHNSUCHT. P.O.D. is a very popular Christian metal band that had some big hits off both The Fundamental Elements of Southtown and Satellite with both title tracks charting, they are in that era of the real mixing of rock and rap that happened turn of the century time (1999-2002) which were bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit and the same time that Eminem was emerging. Am thinking POD Southtown, or Korn's Blind, A.D.I.D.A.S. , and ice-breaker Freak on a Leash which was intend to listen to while tripping. Limp Bizkit's Three Dollar Bill album introduced them to the world with Faith and Counterfeit, and Break Stuff,, before they changed gradually to more mainstream songs like Nookie, Re-Arranged, My Way, My Generation, and of course Rollin were all 99 and earlier. If you really wanna go out there,,, grab Kittie's all female heavy metal album Spit and check out title track. appreciate the fact you guys appreciate the fact its a blend of all instruments and not a keyboard doing it all, with a rapper, rapping over a beat, rockers have to be in sync, imagine being slipknot, 9 members all blending their instruments to make awesomeness
I am jumping on this train if it means these two will be expanding their minds further into the world of rock and metal.
I really like when people stops music and think about lyrics. You don't only need to read books to learn. There's a lot of wisdom on rap and rock lyrics.
The songs original title was actually suicide. But this happened during the 9-11 so they had to change it. At the beginning of the song you will hear serj say “roll suicide”
the harmony they create in second to none
It is dope how rock bands use actual instruments.
That's awesome you guys are open to other idea, suggestions and genres!
I enjoy listening to you guys trying to understand and interpret what’s before you.
I remember System of a Down had a free concert in LA. When too many people showed up the concert was cancelled. The fans rushed the stage and tore everything up.
All System is raw. Glad you guys enjoyed it. So cool watching people hear sounds I've loved for years.amazing
The songs original title was "suicide" but they decided to change it because their lawyers advised against it. If you've ever known a person who killed themselves you can understand what this song means. It's the understanding that sometimes depression eats a soul so profoundly that they don't see any other way to make the pain go away.
I like that you guys analyze and try to understand the meaning of the lyrics. I always love to see how other people interpret music. Good stuff!
I’m a Stan and you guys gotta do more System of a Down
I think Chop Suey was his singing style at the onset. Insane jam! Incredible performance. 100% from the vocalist, piano at the end, so many professional miscal elements in this song. When have we not cried out to the heavens as people?
falling in reverse's 'carry on' also made me cry and gave me massive chills, too.
It’s crazy I grew up listening to this band and this song and never understood it, and I can watch y’all hear it for the first time and understand it, and y’all are hip hop heads !
Y'all called me out me out so I liked and subbed! Keep up content like this! S.O.A.D is one of my most favourite groups ever! I'm glad you were moved to find the deeper meaning. All their songs do! Much Love and thank you for this! 💜💜💜
A little knowledge drop: Y'all were talking about how deep the song was. They also sang in there "Father, into thy hands, i commend my spirit...Why have you forsaken me." Those lines are taken from the Bible when Jesus is on the cross.
Is sooooo fucking awesome and to see you guys appreciate and try understand totally different types of music you’re used to. Fucking respect from the UK 🇬🇧
You guys rock. So much music to explore whether rock, rap, folk, Alternative Rock, etc...
“Worthy is the lamb who’s slain” - bible
SOAD got some of the best transitions in the game. They go so hard, bring you down, and hammer it again before you can blink.
What i love about "true" Hip-Hop is the fact that people could sample 2/3/4 songs or parts of different songs with beautiful scratch and make it an actual new song! DJ tables used as a true Instrument!
I always love hearing the different interpretations of this song! Liked and subbed!
There are many popular videos about System of a Down but not many are about "Question!" It is one of their latest displays of pure raw skill and talent imo! Some people will probably say this is one of their "easier" songs... and that's ok to me, but tbh, this is not an "easy band" with an "easy song in the album" by any stretch... and i love that.
Love your reaction! System of a down bringing everyone of every color of every creed together. Peace brothers ♡

I loved your comment about why you love rock music in the beginning. That was good shit.
"Father into your hands, I commend my spirit" - Jesus
The commentary at the beginning was enough to make me subscribe! Lol well played I’m one of those dudes who only watch... until now
Love seeing people break out of their musical bubble, I grew up everywhere, the hood, the burbs, huge hiphop and rock fan
This song has saved lives. My fam member after years of addiction said he heard what it was really saying 2 years ago. Been clean for 1 yr 4 months.
Old vid. But what you said at the beginning when you were talking about Rock. Is so true that I literally had to like and Follow. I’m a Rock Bassist and that really warmed my heart man.
Lyrics are poetry, doesn't matter if your delivery is some classic rap flow or an opera tenor, what you're hearing is the poetry of it.
Very sincere and well articulated reaction. I could swear I've seen both of you on different UA-cam channels? Maybe I'm crazy. Either way liked and subscribed. Keep up the quality reaction content. ❤️
Scriptwork reacting to rock music is about the best thing to happen this year. Do "Time Bomb" by Rancid next. Make sure you have the lyrics pulled up though. 😂
Great reaction, guys! I really enjoyed your take on this awesome song. Thanks for making me smile today.
Another good transition band from rap/hip-hop is P.O.D.
Check out "Southtown" by them ....too many people slept on them
I agree!
What a great song!!! It does take a lot of talent! Glad you guys liked it 🙌🙌
I grew up in the 90’s man. I love rap and metal. I can play a guitar and freestyle rap. The rap I like is old. 2pac, Biggie, Wu-Tang, Busta Rhymes, Ice Cube, NWA, Dog pound, Fugees, Naz, Older snoop. It is good to hear different types of music. I am subbing to you guys right now. I liked your Rage against the machine reaction too. And you guys are funny, facts.
Been a huge SOAD fan for a while, so awesome to see new fans🔥🔥 gained a subscriber, loved your guys thoughts on it
Serg has so much energy when he sings its unreal.
You are right. Thanks for the great content. Keep up the great work and stay safe.
Iz a classic. U giving quality vids and send real and honest vibes out to the universe
Just woke up from a nap after a 14 hr shift and theres a Chop Suey reaction?!?!? Im still dreaming right?!?!
It's called Chop Suey as a play on words...it was supposed to be called Suicide but the label made them change the title...they took it from the line Self righteous Suicide (Right-chop Suey-side)...and yea it was supposed to be released the 2nd week of Sept 2001....
You guys explains this song so well.
I definitely see the connection between rap and rock. What a lot of people don't realize about rock music is how deep a lot of the messages are in the songs. This is especially true with metal.
I would really like to see you guys break down the following songs:
1.) Morph
2.) Neon Gravestones
3.) Kitchen Sink
All are by the group twenty one pilots.
You know that old saying "why do bad things happen to good people?"
Yo yall usually kill it with the reactions but lately yall are fuckin slaughtering the reactions. Keep it up boys. We need that popular monster - falling in reverse
the fundamental difference i realized about rock and rap is that rock is alot more emotional while rap is alot more expressive
for example rock music doesnt have complex lyrics and is relatively easy to break down because the musicians and the singers themselves set the tone of the message while the message is being delivered
with rap its is almost completely different; delivery (flow) is important but the art of rapping is also immensely dependent on lyricism to express the tone of the message(s) (rap is not fixed, its flexible)
i dont know if this makes much sense to most people but im sure you guys know what im talking about right?
Y’all experts and very educated. I will never listen to this song the same after that new perspective. “Maybe angels deserve to die because they’re too good for the world” holy shit my brothas! That’s a bar! Y’all break down everything! Nothing goes over your head.
Well done for being open minded and exploring outside of your bubble, everyone should be like you guys. Why limit yourself to what you already know? Breaching your bubble and letting new influences into your own music is essential to personal development in your own creativity. Everyone should approach things the way you guys do. KEEP GOING! I have switched from red to grey :)
Tom Green used to be involved in a rap group. "Organized Rhyme- Check The O.R." the video is somewhere on UA-cam.
I've been watching you guys for your Bill Burr reactions for a good while. Just subscribed because you are doing these rock reactions! Fantastic
“I cry when angels deserve to die” means the people with think are good are actually the ones who are the worst
Thanks for doin what you guys do, I personally enjoy watching and remembering old songs I used to Jam to,,,,,,Want something sick,, You could check out what is listed EVERYWHERE by anyone as the most difficult guitar song, Eruption by Eddie Van Halen!!
Can you check out "So far away" by Avenged Sevenfold. Their childhood drummer died and made it for him. Emotionally on blast
Vin and Sori (other great reactors on youtube) took it apart very well in their reaction, they know the scripture (they are Christians) and I guess it helped a lot to peel the layers off of this song. Their reaction was the first time I truly understood what this song was about. Highly recommend to check them out sometime! Great reaction guys! First time stumbling upon your channel but enjoyed your reaction a lot!
Serj (lead singer) is an actual poet. Dude knows how to write and make you think, not just headbang 🔥🔥
I enjoyed watching this video especially as I was in a bubble for years listening to not much outside of rap music. But in away it's good because all of these old rock tunes are new to me and I'm really enjoying discovering these tunes.
