  • If you choose to stay natural, here are a few things that you'll just have to live with. It's not all bad, though. Natural lifting is significantly healthier and while the gains gotten are smaller and slower, they tend to stick around better.

      I think your happy medium is the ole 125mg per week "trt". Killer gains, you can get lean without losing muscle and stay there without losing all of it, and then you can cry hard work and only trt because it's just like being a natural. Seems to be the next phase in "fitness".

      How you would start as a newbie?
      Like what vitamins and all that stuff to consume as a newbie who's got no clue except for that protein is important.
      Because recently i started watching videos from team3dalpha, which i learned that zinc is also important and stuff like that. I didn't knew all that and was amazed that vitamins in it self are important. Als like what to do for gut health?
      I got a pretty sensible gut.
      Lactose intolerance, oil intooerance and some other stuff maybe not sure.

    I think the silver lining of staying natural is ultimately that you'll keep your gains longer (and not ruin your health) and you can still look way better than almost everyone around you. Anyone who gets close to their genetic potential will always stand out in their everyday environment because Instagram models on juice aren't really the type of people you'll be walking by on the street.

      Yes I get a ton of stares here in China. To some people, I am quite possibly the most muscular person they've ever seen in person. Then on the internet...I'm small.

    I didn’t start lifting until 33. 38 now and in better shape than most 20 year olds I know. Yes, I will die small, but I fucking earned all 6oz of muscle that I put on.

    Fifty years of drug-free training: in my 60s my bloodwork, vital signs, and body composition are all way better than normal for a man any age. Heavy compounds, a non-fanatic Balanced Diet, and plenty of sleep keep natural androgenic & anabolic hormones at ample levels. Enjoyment, consistency and persistence are the best anabolics. Great vid on an important topic.

    I think this illustrates the problem with training for an aesthetic. If you're training for health and performance, you can enjoy the aesthetic changes that come with fitness. If the whole point is achieving a certain look, there will always be a temptation to sacrifice health for appearance.

      Everyone should read this. What you wrote here perfectly frames the disparity between the mindsets involved with the two training focuses. The latter can lead to the literal embodiment of a bad paradox. The bulk of fitness content on SM is perversely misleading and an outright mockery of anything close to healthy. If more people read what you wrote, who knows how many paths of others would change in better directions. Thanks for that.

    Yep, when I first heard about sarms they were trying to sell them to me like "it has all the benefits from steroids and no downsides" but I did my research and realize how bad they are. Stay natty bros.

      @@Axxxel_in_Harlem If it is banned by WADA, it is not a supplement. That's generally a good line in the sand. Caffeine, creatine, protein powder, all good. Pro hormones, testosterone, SARMs, steroids, growth hormone...nope.

    training literally saved my life from drug addiction, i've build decently strong and decently muscular body and training has cured my decade long lasting severe insomnia (which in fact ultimately lead to my drug abuse), so there is zero interest nor temptation to start taking any type of drug in my life anymore, including roids. Training is supposed to make you healthier so what's the point of taking roids..? Okey i get it if you want to compete in bodybuilding then you are pretty much forced to take them, but to me training is mainly for my mental and physical health and it's nice to get good looking body on the side

    I completly agree Geoffrey. Staying natural is a strength of character and you can be proud that your achievements were done pretty much through hard work and that it wasn't some drugs that allowed you to have the muscles you gained. From that point on it doesn't matter what anyone else says. Whenever someone accuses you, just have a good laugh, and know that you must have an impressive enough physique for them to make that accusation.

      @@terminator2348 It IS cool to be natural. I won't hate someone for taking steroids, it's their choice, but the world would be better off if steroids weren't a part of it. And you know what's more annoying? Seeing teenagers with body image issues and poisoning themselves - Every TV show, movie and magazine out there basically throwing it in your face that you're not good enough unless you take roids - Cheaters in powerlifting or any sport for that matter that can't win without a needle in their ass... Should I keep going?

    This is so true man...Been working out 26 years & always natty, & yet it makes me laugh I sometimes get accused of taking PEDs, while I’m nowhere near as big or strong as guys who are on gear.

I also think it often comes from people who want to look for excuses for why they haven’t achieved any significant results yet despite not taking the time to learn how to exercise properly or be consistent with their efforts, and/or haven’t been eating healthy and sleeping enough to recover properly.
      It’s unfortunately much easier for people to point at someone and say “They only look like that because they used PEDs” instead of being introspective & realizing they can achieve their own similar results if they took the time to put the consistent effort in (while staying 100% natural).

    Great video, Geoff. I’ve been a natural lifter for over two decades now. There are both frustrations and positives to training drug free.
    Even though I’m relatively happy with the progress I’ve made and I’m aware that my decision to remain natural will limit my muscle building potential, it’s still good to hear honest talk like this every now and again.

    There's some absolutely warped commenters out here on fitness youtube. Ryan Russo gets the same sort of "small/dyel" comments and he's 23, over 5'11" and 250lbs at around 14-15% body fat. Same people thinking if you just work really hard and eat chicken and broccoli and you'll be shredded sub 10%bf year round

    Good points. I am not interested in taking substances and never looked into them but what information I did get watching various fitness channels like yours they seem very bad for long term health which to me totally contradicts with doing sports for fun and health.     You’re completely right about the substance temptation, man. I’m 17 and I’ve been working out for a little under a year now. I do body weight exercises, by the way, it’s more comfortable and accessible for me. Like everyone does, my muscle gains are starting to slow down and plateau. On social media I’ll see people my same age with insane physique because they’ve been saucing up. And it’s frustrating as hell, and it makes you think “if they’ve been working out for half of the time I have, but have a much larger physique, why the hell am I not doing what the hell they’re doing?” Of course though, I’ll correct my thoughts and remember what’s healthy. Thanks for the effort and honesty you put into your content.

      JL, remember those gains do come faster for those you see on the juice today, but they're slicing a piece of their life off the back end. You should look up past bodybuilders in their later years and watch some documentaries (Ronnie Coleman the King). It's not worth it no matter how safe anyone tells you it can be.     You are correct. At my peak size from lifting in the mid 90s, I was accused of doing steroids. Never touched the tuff.

    Good video. Currently in my early 30s and just realized how many of my friends and other people at the gyms I frequented were on roids (based on them telling me recently as most have had to start on trt or have other health issues). Starting in highschool I thought either my workout plan/intensity or genetics just sucked. Resetting my expectations is difficult.
    So I copied the roided workouts and ended up stalling and/or injuring myself. About 3 months ago I went back to my basic lifting plan I devised when I was 16 and, with a proper diet, am getting newbie gains. When is awesome, yet depressing considering I have lifted for 4 years at this point after my latest stupid injury.
    It would have been nice if some of those people I had asked for advice had told me they were supplementing (or I had been smart enough to realize) when I asked them for advice so I could have modifed or ignored what they were doing. I'm lucky I never wasted money on a stupid program but I did waste a lot of time.

    I have always done sports but it wasn’t until was 28 that I started strength training, i am turning 33 now :) I am not like super chiseled but i have enough muscle to eat a lot at 5,6” :) and i am way heavier than what i look and ppl always are shocked to hear i have three kids :)
    I think staying natty helps u hit your comfy weight, keeps u young and doesn’t take the fun out of the sport :)

      How are 150 pounds skinny? Thats a healthy weight. Majority of people is are fat. If youre sitting at 150 pounds with about 10% bodyfat youre still more muscular then maybe 70% of guys your age.

    Great video . I started training 8 months ago age 46 unfit and overweight . Progress is slow and steady losing fat and building muscle , which I've accepted. Have been offered steroids but choose not to because although the external changes would be faster and more pronounced I choose health over fast gains.

      the journey is the destination, every day you eat clean and exercise, you get healthier and build muscle, the slow path is the real path, it's like climbing a mountain or building a house spread out over 20 - 30 years, we might not look 'great' but we are guranteed to feel great, I'll take feeling great over looking great any day.

    I've been lifting most of my life. I'm 50 and while I'm not making fast gains, I am still slowly gaining strength and muscle. Changing up my training breaks through plateaus. I do some weird things, like switching to 6 weeks of full body workouts, every other day (so high frequency) once or twice per year... switching back to a split... doing HIT style (which I do most of the time)...switching to high volume... periodization does wonders. I also don't worry about being super lean - - just healthy. I haven't noticeably gained a lot of size in a long time, but lagging body parts are catching up (and as they push ahead, other body parts will seem lagging, even if they were impressive, before and haven't shrank) and I am notably stronger than I was even a year ago. I'm just a hobbyist at bodybuilding and do it for myself; for health, to compensate for a sedentary job, and as stress release... I train at home, live in a rural area, and wouldn't know where to get steroids, even if I wanted them, which I don't. I have over 18 inch arms, but in my 30s was probably stuck in the 16- 17 range. I actually saw a lot of gains in my mid to late 40s, which a lot of folks talk like that can't happen...so I wouldn't worry about your gains ending and beginning an inevitable decline any time soon.

    Depends on your genetics. My test is extremely high as is the case for everyone else in my family. Muscle growth comes easy and always has. People will definitely assume you're on steroids when you gain quickly.

      It can work, not ideal though. If it was ideal, gyms wouldn't exist.

      @@GVS I understand. For me I find it that I just like training this way. I dont necessarily train for hypertrophy but to just get stronger each workout and use certain compound movements like the ohp and deadlift alongside with the weighted calisthenics movement to help me progress further.
      One example I can mention is Alex Leonidas from Alpha Destiny, his content and training is something closer to my training style. There is a new and upcoming channel called frinksmovement who has been recently putting out quality calisthenics stuff with a science based/deeper approach and deserves more subscribers. You should check him out on your free time.
      And again thanks for the quality advice, really appreciate you being real with us.

    The most annoying thing for me is i go for strength increase only.
    I actually dont want to get "big", i have liked being slim. Only in the last year have planned to add muscle. I also had to spend a long time gaining healthy body fat before I could even start adding muscle.
    In 2002 I was under 5% body fat, now im around 14% or 9% depending on how you calculate.

    Geoffrey, I have an embarrassing confession to make. I think I was one of those people in that Greg Doucette comment section when that video came out. I feel like an idiot knowing what I know now in my fitness journey. I was brainwashed in the cult of Greg, and anyone who didn’t agree with him was wrong. I thought I was small, and fat, because like you’ve covered in other videos Greg doucettes standards that he lays out in his videos are dysmorphic. I viewed things through a lens of roided up influencers, and viewed myself as inadequate. And in my comment I hated on you, not even knowing who you were at the time, even though your physique is more impressive than mine, and you are stronger. You speak the truth brother, that steroids and most influencers are harmful to young men’s minds. I’ve since wised up a bit, after finding your channel, natural hypertrophy, Sean Nal, and some others. I don’t get all my opinions from one source anymore, who is pharmacologically in a different category from me, and thrives on negativity.
    I want to apologize. I was stupid in the past, in a lot of ways still am now, but trying to improve. Thank you for the quality content you put out, you pulled me out of a hole, even though I may not have deserved it. Your content made a positive impact in my fitness journey and my life.

    I've gotten far leaner than I've ever been just by adding in some LISS cardio 3x/wk. It's amazing what people rule out as "reasons for leanness" just to say it's PEDs

      Many factors, but I stand by what I said, most (the vast, vast majority) of naturals aren't sustaining below 10% body fat without thinking about food constantly and being restrictive.

    I'm 49 @ 220lbs bench 295, squats 370, deadlifts 425, and OHP 185 stayed natty forever never crossed my mind to inject! The only thing the recovery takes longer 🥴

    I'm a 67 natural and I get comments on my channel that I look like the Wolverine. If you stick to being natural you will look great in your old age. I get a lot of comments and looks from others because I'm in such great shape for my age. It's hard to convince people that I'm as old as I am. Stay strong and keep working out naturally for life.

      @@idb2100 I’m almost 42 and a lifelong natural. I’ve always generally eaten a clean healthy diet & have been working out for over 26 years consistently. People always think I’m 5-10 years younger than I am, and I’m proud of that. I may never be as big or strong as guys who blast gear, but I’m totally fine with that, and I’m also sure that the quality and length of my life will be greater than theirs, which I’m also totally fine with. To stay natural, you have to be able to check your ego at the door and realize that the end result is actually better staying natural than whatever short term gains you would get if you used PEDs.

      I'm a 34yo natural and i'm still getting stronger in the gym. Of course after a few years of newbie gains the process slows down incrementally, but i don't believe they stop completely until you're in ur mid 40s - early 50s.

    My advice for people who feels depressed cuzz their gains are to slow or stopped completely I would suggest to do a skill based sport like boxing, football, basketball, baseball parkour etc... It will distract distract you from not getting more ripped and there for catching body dismorphia and doing a skill based sport on the side will by default feel like Newby gains all over again and you don't necessarily need to become bigger stronger or faster in order to progress in those things (although that obviously helps) if you have limited time or willpower just replace your cardio just a suggestion

    Hey Geoff. Great video as always. Quick, off-topic question.....why is lifting the weight up and down/ side to side/ whatever...better than just holding the weight in the most difficult position? Why do we bench press and not bench hold?

      Full range of motion is almost always better than an isometric. Our muscles are built for movement, not just resisting movement.

      Holding the weight in the most difficult position increases strength at that position and to a certain number of degrees to either side of that point, but it doesn't increase strength over the full range of motion.
      Heavy partials and weighted holds have their uses, but are as much or more for bone density, connective tissue strength and stimulating the nervous system.
