      @@GVS Thank you. I'm lucky I found channels like yours, Alan Thrall's, and Obese2Beast's instead of getting successfully marketed to by certain others. I figured out how to be in a calorie deficit without being miserable, which is something a lot of keto/IF/veganism advocates never seem to bring up. It's like any car can get you there, but if you like the Toyota better, drive it.

      You should never say that you've reached your peak. Though the numbers may climb much more slowly in terms of bodyweight, contractile tissue, and strength, as the years tick by, each earnest bulk and cut will make a noticeable difference, maybe for the rest of your life. Just look at AlphaDestiny, and that's with a short frame.

I’ve been working with fully visible abs (even not flexed) for nearly a year while gaining more size. You get the best results you can when the process takes precedent.

    this is actually a very well put together video that made me subscribe. i started workin out (weights and cardio) some 7 months ago and i am very pleased with my progress. i have decent genetics, a wide back, fairly small waist and a good amount of muscle from previously working out in my early 20's, so no newbie gains for me. but i lost a good amount of fat, got more and more leaner, not shredded by any measure, and most important, i really enjoy my new found lifestyle. when i was younger i used to think anybody can have a six pack if they put in enough work. but i've worked my ass off the last couple of months and though i have a flat, toned middle section, alas... no abs. :)) and... i'm perfectly fine with that. i look great and never felt better. anyway, just wanted to say i enjoy your content. keep it up bro !

    Unrealistic expectations can close the door to any results at all. Social media isn't all that different than old school bodybuilding magazines (practically the only thing available to most 20+ years ago). The great thing about social media is that there is an alternative to the "greater than natty" mainstream. Healthy and realistic expectations are much more sustainable long term. When applied, this means that one can far exceed the average person (and average gym goer) because most will either give up or dramatically sell themselves short in their training due to false expectations.

    Currently around 19%, I think targeting 15% is pretty reasonable in the near term (with a cut to 17-18%, then recomping for quite a while). I've been sub 8% before and it can be fairly miserable that low. I think treating fitness like a journey rather than a specific fixed goal is very helpful.

    Be interested to get your take on the kumail nanjiani story. On the one hand I think it’s probably inspiring for a lot of people to see a guy in his 40’s get in fantastic shape and realise the myriad of benefits that exercise has; and that it’s never to late to work on your fitness. On the other hand we have a guy who looked like he’d never even done a press up before all of a sudden (well in a year basically) being in better shape than 99% of the population- including many people who’ve trained for a long time naturally. Dude seems to have skipped his natty limit and just gone straight to the enhanced gains.
    The usual suspects have complemented his “genetics”, but to me this is a classic example of how genetics have become so overplayed and a defence mechanism to distract from substance abuse. As there is no way this guy is solely on TRT.
    I guess we shouldn’t pay too much attention to Hollywood. They live different lives to us mere mortals. I just think it’s an interesting discussion. Appreciate your work man.

      That's very true I think in all likely hood most people have really similar muscle building genetics and the difference has been greatly exaggerated, sure there is probably like 10% of the population that's really good or really bad at building muscle but probably the rest of us are pretty close.

    I've played with the math a little bit and noticed that for a short active woman like me with a maintenance of 1700/day dropping my calories by 500, is like a bigger guy with a maintenance of 2500/day dropping his calories by 725/day. A bit harder to maintain relatively. I've concluded that I just can't lose 1lb a week without some major hunger consequences. Aiming for half a pound/week with a drop in 250 calories/day is more realistic for me.

    • @GVS
      @GVS  3 роки тому +13

      Yes, that's another consideration, smaller people tend to want to go with a lower amount. I have heard of some big bodybuilders having a 2,000 calorie deficit (!!!) which is just not possible for you haha

So no 1 kilo a week not universally applicable maybe that's an average ish

  • @nlb137
    @nlb137 3 роки тому +18

    "Water weight" is also something to keep in mind in the long term as well. I can literally wake up a pound lighter than I went to sleep due to exhaled vapor and sweat. You can fluctuate several pounds just based on how what you eat makes you retain water and how much shit you have making you way through your guts at the moment. I've "stalled" for a week, then weighed in at my lightest after a weekend where I ate absolute garbage.
    I think people are liable to give up on their diet because it "isn't working" when they're just putting on water weight (temporarily) at the same rate they're losing fat over a short term, and would soon actually see those gains (losses) realized.

    • @GVS
      @GVS  3 роки тому +10

      For sure. Cortisol is a huge confounder for weight loss. Can stall for a while, then WOOSH...often it'll be on a vacation or something, stress goes down and BOOM you lose 2-3kg and look leaner overnight.

    • @danieltemelkovski9828
      @danieltemelkovski9828 3 роки тому +2

      @@GVS So raised cortisol is responsible for increased water retention? I wonder if there are other factors, related to homeostasis. If bodyweight "set point" theory is correct, then presumably our brains have some way of detecting when our weight is lower than what "should be" (in this case because of fat loss) and perhaps increase water retention in a bid to prevent our weight departing too radically from what our brains wants it to be. Then at some later point it gives in and accepts the new reality, and so woosh. Just wildly speculating.

      That's in line with the formula developed by Casey Butt: muscle gain in one year = 0.3 × wrist^2 × 0.5^(no. of years training - 1) [Wrist measured in inches] So using this, someone with 6.5" wrists in their first year of training could expect .3 x 6.5 x 6.5 x 1 [1-1 = 0 and anything raised to the power of 0 equals 1] = 12.6lb.

    Hey Geoff could you maybe elaborate a bit on the hormonal side of genetics? Why do people respond so differently to weight training? Also a video about
    Myofibrillar and sarcoplasmic hypertrophy would be very interesting. Is Myfobrillar mostly driving strength and sarcoplasmic better resistance on higher reps and do we automatically train both?

    • @GVS

      It's not as distinct as "higher reps=sarco, lower reps=myo", there's a lot more overlap than most people think. As for the hormonal side of things, that's a BIG question, it's basically my entire next book.

    Been on keto for 4 months now, and lost 4 stone in weight. Most of it came off in the first 2 months, and now I am dropping about 1lb per week, or less. However, the physical benefits I have experienced from cutting the carbs has been the most satisfying, so many health issues that are too many to talk about. Lucky for me I love the food I can enjoy on keto, but, I do miss pasta and rice. For me, keto is the lifestyle that has worked.

    It took me exactly 12 months, to go from 205 lbs at 36% BF (used DEXA and an in-body together) to 152.3 lbs roughly 20% BF. That was with literally a straight downward slope from the very beginning, maintaining 90% of my lean mass (according to dexa). So I legit LOL'd when you said people trying to get to 5%, bruh it will take me probably another year to get to 15% while bulking some and stabling off. So 2 years to drop 20% BF, its a crazy long journey and that isn't even the impending bulk cycles i'll have to do. Shizzle mang.

    It's always CICO. But keto can be really effective for some people to maintain satiety at a calorie deficit. I like meat and vegetables. So it is a sustainable diet for me. Whenever I talk about keto, I talk about it from the perspective of whether the person like meat and non-starchy vegetables.
    With respect to progression, I don't have a problem as a newb of progressing in reps and/or weight week over week. And except for a couple of workouts, my DOMS is really mild compared to what my trainer things I should have, and she suspects keto might be part of it. All that fat lubricating me (joke). One reason is sometimes you can’t really see progress in the mirror, but if the numbers are going up, you know you are building muscle. There are other reasons as well, but I don’t wanna go all nerdy here. I would love to see you try hard-core powerlifting for a year or so. Really curious to see how you look after that. Best wishes.

    for rate of weight loss, Martin MacDonald uses your current body fat percentage divided by 13. That number will give you the percentage of total body weight you can lose per week on an aggressive diet without sacrificing muscle. from personal experience and with clients, it's a pretty good figure. [ex. 200 lb at 26% BF = 4 lbs / week, but 200 lb at 20% BF = 3 lbs / week]

    • @zerrodefex
      @zerrodefex 5 місяців тому

      I think your meant fat mass divided by 13. 26/13 = 2, not 4. (200 * 0.26) = 52 / 13 = 4. Anyhow 4 pounds a week would still be insane as that's a 2000 cal/day deficit.

    Geoff can you make a video focused on recomps? There seems to be some confusion there. It seems that some people, depending on their genetics, training, and nutrition of course, can actually look bigger and leaner in a surplus, assuming they are already relatively lean. GSP and several other MMA fighters are great examples. They are required to move up to a certain weight but actually look better at a heavier weight. I also think there's confusion about time as well (how long to bulk, how long to cut) but I guess that's really individual.

    I was very stressed about my weight loss process last year when I began whole thing, that resulted in my only loosing 10 KGs in a whole year, I mean I was proud because I went from lower levels of obesity to overweight, but still at 95kgs I have close to 20 kgs to lose to my "ideal" weight.
    Last month I just said "fu... it" and went to the gym first time in 4 years introduced 500kcal deficit into my diet(before I was just watching to not cross my recommended intake) but I was not very consistent with it, increased proteins to 100-150g a day, and rolled with it for a month, not watching videos about weight loss just about exercises form etc. Kept doing cardio, began doing posture fixing exercises.
    I did not weight myself I just did not fucking care anymore, I just had fun, yes caloric deficit is a stress but if you make your diet plan to increase more of healthy food its actually not that bad but still its frustrating, that is not avoidable.
    I noticed a solid definition appear in my arms and overall increase in my back and chest, I know that is probably a muscle memory doing its job, with increased levels of protein I take now, so I expected when I weight myself to see a increase in body weight because my risk areas(abdomen love handles and chest) did not appear to loose any fat at all or that was at least what I thought. However when I stepped on scale this monday I was 89 killos that was my goal to reach last year, I lost 5 killograms just this month, no crush diets, no fasting, just training and not getting stressed about it, also my performance at the gym increased every week so muscle loss is minimal.
    So I made a new plan, my next goal is to reach 85kg till end of september keeping this going I will keep you updated.

      @Tribalpotato 2 роки тому +1

      @@sakshammathur9565 Well I did reach 85 I dropped creatine for 4 weeks just to see what is my weight without it :D , but sadly it was only for 2 weeks, then I had some emotional stress, since I am nervous eater I regained some of the weight shortly after, however I did manage to avoid "bad food" and I am proud of that, like fast food and sweet drinks. Yet I was still eating a lot of "bad" carbs.
      After new years eve I got the "virus" so I had to make 3 weeks brake, but after I got I increased all my weights at the gym I was rly proud of that but again I was frustrated because of my body weight, and then I hurt my shoulder lifting something outside of the gym -.-, another 2 week brake. So in general 3 months of bad luck.
      I used this 2 weeks to make new plans around my diet, I started using my fitness pal(before I was just writing like a moron). In this period I eat more so I can have faster recovery, but In general my weight was 90kgs and it was stable. Now I returned to my pre injury state 88kgs(with creatine). However this time I feel a lot better compared to time I was at 85, I felt drained at that weight.
      My belly fat is a lot smaller, as are my love handles, my face is a lot slimer and some veins are popping on my arms and I never had any veins on my arms like ever even tho my body weight is unstable and I did regain some I feel like I lost quite a bit of body fat % since I made this comment. Interestingly body fat distribution is so weird that I am not even sure at what body fat% I am because all my body parts look like they are at different body fat levels :D, fat drops very randomly and without any specific order. For example a lot of people drop face fat last, however my face looks a lot sharper then before.
      As for gym progress I am lifting 100KGs from bench 3 times but I dropped weight so I can do more reps for majority of my workouts now feels much better that way, I can lift sumo deadlift I think around 140-150kgs but I do not do one rep maxes on deadlifts anymore and I am still very afraid to push my maximum on that exercise, 50kgs 6 repetitions from standing bicep curl(last 3 with cheating and slower negative movement), 30 dips, 60+ kgs on upright tricep cable pushdown, just to name some of the exercises. I am not strongest guy in the gym but I think I am actually doing quite good for 179 cm fat fu*** :D. Also my posture got better.
      Changes I made are mainly on workout frequency in general I focus on hitting every muscle ground 2 times in 8 days and focus on progressive overload instead of one rep maxing and rep range of 6-10 or 8-12 depending on muscle group, as for my diet now I focus on macros, and not just on calories, and it seems to be working a lot better. Also I reduced a lot of cardio, I was doing it every day and I felt that It pushed me into bing eating, so now I do it only 3 times a week for 30 minutes.
      This in not what I aimed at and that is ok, I am not giving up, I got back on drawing table and made new and I think better plan for me, both diet and exercise wise. But now I am actually "proudish" of my body.
      Since I know weight loss is everything but linear progress, this time I will not aim at specific date for specific weight goal, I will just focus on doing right things one day at the time, and keep real track of my progress instead on focusing only goal that may even be unreal for my specific case.
      I will keep this updated, cya in few months and good luck to everybody.

      My strength is also up but not like yours (60kg bench, 110kg squats, 120kg conv dl) maybe because I focus more on weight loss than lifting more but I feel pretty strong in that ( and also none of these numbers are 1rp max)

    It's is possible to lose massive amounts of weight relatively quickly. For a time I lost close to 1 pound a day, weighing myself twice a day with a doctor's scale. I was typically down 5 pounds per week. Over 6 months, I lost 110 pounds.
    I am nothing special. A friend of mine saw what I was doing and replicated it, eventually surpassing me.
    Unfortunately, I did this by eating 800-1300 calories a day, very strictly. I lost a ton of muscle and was very weak. I was miserable, angry and starving literally all the time.
    It took roughly 2.5 years to gain it all back and then some, leaving me full of fat and with much less muscle. Now, my belief is just to exercise, build muscle, and eat lots of protein, but don't be extreme. As long as you are making progress you will feel good.
