Great video. I'm headed over the Pulaski bridge tonight to get some gas in Greenpoint. I'd stay away from Gowanus for now. I'm sure you saw the recent headlines this week that they're testing for cancer causing fumes coming from the canal. Probably not a good idea to breathe that in, lol.
I did read the articles. I think the testing is more of the air from the industrial sites / land vs. testing air due to the water from the canal. Either way, the industry in the area has polluted a lot around there. There's an organization called the Gowanus Dredgers that canoes the canal regularly.

I don't think I could handle being hemmed in like that the whole time.I couldn't help but be scoping an emergency exit the whole time, and probably ruin what appears to be, for the most part, a pleasant little paddle. Thanks so much for sharing...
@JohnCompton1 I'm always looking for emergency exits. It's a good practice. Sitting in a kayak for a long time can get uncomfortable. It was a pleasant trip, though. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors btw, are those sailboats occupied, maybe like the homeless in S.F., it's hard for the authorities to eject the occupants? They sure looked worse for wear, and the solar panels led me to believe there was some occupancy. And what a strange place for the boats to wind up.
@JohnCompton1 I believe you are right about your theory about people living on them. I didn't really didn't see many people, though. I don't know if they were down in the boats or away from them or what. It's very interesting but I can't confirm the situation behind them. If people are "homeless" living on them, it doesn't seem the city is doing much to stop it. Maybe that's why there's so many. 🤷
You're welcome! I try to go to interesting places that people might like to see but may never go. Such a cool perspective of New York City. 😎 Thank you for watching and commenting.
It’s interesting that businesses seem to have been allowed to hijack the public access to the water over the decades. I may be wrong, but I believe that most of the streets of the 5 boroughs were built right up to water’s edge so that the citizens had easy access to the water. Now many businesses seem to have gates there. (Maybe it’s “adverse possession”?) Not that I see the Gowanus or Newtown Creek as ideal swimming holes…😬 but, as you said, look at the little bit of peace and quiet you’ve been able to enjoy by just being off the streets. You have had to scramble to find some access. In a massive city, any little bit of respite can be gold. Thanks for interesting content! I ❤️NY!
Yes, obviously shipping and industry is so important to NYC and the area. Currently, it's sad that during heavy rains, there's solid waste that get released into some of these waterways because of overflow at treatment plants. Thank you for watching and commenting.
@@tomroggero Great point. A lot of these properties will...or should be, depending on the bureaucracy...rezoned for bigger residential buildings and public spaces even for new flooding resilience.
@dfrost6573 Historically, in NYC, it was considered poor to live by the water due to the amount of industry/shipping business that occurred there prior to roads and cars being the main mode of transportation. Most residential property was as far from the water as possible. Only the very poorest lived near the water. This is why 5th Ave (as far from the water as possible before hitting the park) has been considered one of the wealthiest streets.

My father fell in Newtown Creek in his first communion suit in 1935. According to the New York City Library it was already very polluted. Good thing he was the youngest of four brothers and there was no one else to pass the white suit on to.
I’m a Steamfitter, and I did a lot of work, there at the water treatment plant. I used to hang out with the DockBuilders there, for coffee and lunch. They had a floating dock, and their workboats, there. At that time ( several years ago ) that water was so foul, I was more afraid of getting sick from that, than any of the water at the plant.
Was doing some research on the creek itself and the boats. Unfortunately due to massive dumping and raw sewage over the years while the creek looks clean it does not test that way. And there’s a whole history on the boats. Thanks for brining me along.
Every once in a while I hang out at one of the dead end streets (overlooking the creek) on the Brooklyn side. It's pretty cool to see the creek from this perspective.
That's awesome! Coming from someone local to Newtown Creek, that means a lot to me. Hope you'll checkbout some other videos of mine when you have time. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Yes, the clouds were def dark. Original forecast showed it would be more sunny. I would have preferred a more sunny video but I think the clouds contributed to the grungy theme a bit but I found the creek to be pretty nice. I try to have a positive outlook. 😀
Another great video. Despite the clean-up efforts, not sure I would venture into the Gowanus Canal -- there are still days it stinks to high heaven -- probably a good thing you were unable to find an access point.
Interestingly, there's a group known as the Gowanus Dredgers that paddles the Gowanus regularly. Access is challenging. They have a private launch. I may do one of their free paddles to check it out 1st. Thank you for watching and commenting.
There's so much great work to do with the NYC waterways and coastline - even Newtown and...yes...the Gowanus lol. I hope I get to see more of it done. The K-Bridge at night is a beautiful sight.

Another great video! If you were contemplating doing the Gowanus Canal, your bravery is commendable (it is anyway). I read things about how polluted these waterways are-things like 14' of "Black Mayonnaise" on the bottom. Interestingly, the two people you spoke to were very friendly. There is a club called "Liquid Sky" who periodically circumnavigate Manhattan. You seem to have strong paddle skills, and you could make the best Urban Kayaking video ever on that trip!
Thank you so much for this awesome comment. I really appreciate it. The polluted waterways are intriguing to me, and I've definitely heard of the black mayonnaise. I find that I have a desire to see these places for myself but really want to see if there's still a hint of beauty and any wildlife still present in these areas. It always seems like the people I run into are friendly and want to talk to me. I'd be more comfortable circumnavigating Manhattan in a full on sea kayak rather than my Oru. Oh, by the way, I did go to the Gowanus Canal on Saturday and recorded a video. You're the 1st to know. Stay tuned. I'm editing it this week. Some fun stuff!! Once upon a time, Newtown Creek flowed through wetlands and marshes. It must have been beautiful. Then industrialization in the 1800s came along, the wetlands were filled in, and the creek became an industrial sewer. You're brave to kayak a Superfund site.
@AK-ey2uy I've watched a few videos regarding this history of Newtown Creek. You're completely right about the wetlands and marshes. It's unbelievable to imagine that at one time, there was natural beauty before it was influenced by industrialization by man, massive oil spills, raw sewage, etc. I just want to see these waterways with my own eyes and show them to others. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
I would be so afraid that I'd touch that water, or worse, fall in! Especially when you pointed out whatever that was that was bubbling in the water. This was a fascinating video and thank you so much for bringing it to us. I'm glad I found your channel!
Thank you for watching and commenting. The bubbling as I'm told is an aeration system. I believe that water stays very stagnant in that area and lacks oxygen so the aeration system helps the water. I'm glad you found my channel too. Hope you'll check out other videos of mine when you have time.
it is just so strange to be so peaceful on the water being surrounded by the busiest city on the east coast. It was so quiet on the water.. Not sure about you, but I am sure it breaks your heart when you see all the trash in the water. Thanks for sharing.
All of my videos are exactly this. It's somehow very peaceful on the water in such a huge urban environment. It is sad to see the trash and pollution. I do enjoy bringing awareness to these waterways and find it interesting.
those wet weather drains are only storm drain discharges for rain. they shouldn't have sewer or septic drains into waterways hopefully. i know some areas stink and they may be very polluted areas from commercial runoff and the water is probably toxic.
@COPPER71 Yes, I believe you are right. There are, however, CSO's which are Combined Sewer Overflows that flow raw sewage into our waterways during rain events (including in Newtown Creek). Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
a bit depressing. all that shoreline and effort for independent business. Nobody uses the water much anymore.. the steel people are very smart. Way more tonnage across the waters. Thanks for the ride. We used to go to container docks in the 80s..sometimes smaller places than expected. These water ways made me wonder. It was much worse back then. I am up in northern half of maine with a ten foot kayak. I paddle alone all the tme. it is more dangerous there.. yelling for help where there is no people, let alone cellphone..I am a bit crazy like that. I visit islands in the big rivers that have no interference, straight oaks colonials could not cut..and bald eagles...lots of wildlife... and a deep breath that feeds the soul. New york city area had an even bigger habitat as a warmer welcome place...once upon a time.
I love these videos you're doing. You're passing through places I've lived... although I'm more of a land-lover so you're showing me a new viewpoint..... LOL Western Beef. Yeah, that is a small chain that I'd never heard of until moving to that area. It's uh.... unfancy. Keep up the good work.

I can see how it might be a little "daunting" to see how difficult it would be to get out of the water should the boat sink or be damaged. Steep docks and piling would be hard to get up in an emergency.

Matt over in new jersey in Newark someone got stopped by police while videotaping from a kayek. By the FBI office ,then as the guy got to the drawbridge he was asked to show his I'd. He was stopped for videotaping from his kayek
I know who that is. Video recording is 100% legal in public spaces and public waterways. Those officers had no reason to stop him. They went a bit beyond their authority, but the UA-camr cooperated. As a matter of fact, I want to paddle and make a video where he was.

So when you get to the one end with the discharge and the girl talking to you and she thought you worked there. A piece of knowledge is that building with the gated fence around it on your right when your paddling back or on your way to the discharge it would be on your left is the MTA NYC Transit Authority Money building, so basically all the money that is collected in Metrocard Machines and on the buses is collected and brought to this building its like Fort Knox there. I did read the articles. I think the testing is more of the air from the industrial sites / land vs. testing air due to the water from the canal. Either way, the industry in the area has polluted a lot around there. There's an organization called the Gowanus Dredgers that canoes the canal regularly.
I like to follow kayak adventures on UA-cam. Your's has become a favorite.
Personality and quality of content are the most important things. It's pretty clear you've put a lot into improving your equipment and skill. I find myself looking forward to the next video.

Matt my good friend NYC tourism board should hire you as NYC ambassador because you make any NYC waterway into an amazing kayaking ride . Your videos are a feast for the eyes specially for those of us that been living in NYC and take our waterways for granted . 🫡🫡
Thank you! They should! Lol. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors thank you for your wonderful replies...special guy with a special channel...take care!

@@u8myshorts Awesome! Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
Not just about swimming in it, but also being able to SEE it usually helps with keeping it clean. When it's not so visible people care less.
@@tomroggero That's true! I agree.
A folding kayak, amazing! How does it seal it's self. Love watching u and hearing the water. Be safe.
It's all one sheet of plastic with internal supports. So, nothing to seal, it's all one piece. The plastic is very strong. They say the folds can handle 20,000 folds. Thank you for watching and commenting.
I live in the area and have driven over those bridges multiple times. It's nice to see it from another perspective.

My father fell in Newtown Creek in his first communion suit in 1935. According to the New York City Library it was already very polluted. Good thing he was the youngest of four brothers and there was no one else to pass the white suit on to.
@@Moonflowers11 Omg. Funny story! Thank you for sharing that. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Amazing paddle. I used to paddle that area back in the late 80’s. When people saw my boat they had no idea what it was
Cool 😎. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Yes, I've watched a bunch of videos and read some articles. It's all very interesting. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Wow! Thank you for sharing your journey through this creek. My goodness, so much new highrises along the way. Those sailing boats....

Another cool video, Tks. Clouds were a little dark that day
Yes, the clouds were def dark.

I just want to see these waterways with my own eyes and show them to others. those wet weather drains are only storm drain discharges for rain. they shouldn't have sewer or septic drains into waterways hopefully. i know some areas stink and they may be very polluted areas from commercial runoff and the water is probably toxic.
