Bronx Kayaking: Exploring the Lagoon and Tiny Islands Around Pelham Bay Park NYC
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- Due to its popularity, some may think that the largest park in New York City is Central Park in Manhattan... but it's actually Pelham Bay Park in The Bronx! Pelham Bay Park is three times larger than Central Park at 2,765 acres. I start the day at the Pelham Bay Park Kayak Launch, paddle through the lagoon and pass the Orchard Beach Grandstand. I continue around Hunter Island passing Gray Mare Boulder and make a pit stop at Hog Island. I also passed by Danny Hat Island, Two Tree Island, and Twin Island. This may be the most beautiful spot in The Bronx and quite possibly all of New York City.

Happy belated birthday Matt! Love your channel! Beyond all the great content, there's something so serene and "ASMR-ish" about hearing the paddles hit the water. Don't underestimate that as part of the allure of your videos. But of course every other aspect is great as well - the exploring, the adventure, the tiny tidbits of history surrounding the places you paddle in and around, the nature aspect of it, the observation of the concrete jungle that is New York from its surrounding waterways! Great job and the editing and video-graphy should get thumbs up too! 👍👍👍
Thank you! I think you nailed it! 🎯 That is what I'm shooting for. I really appreciate you watching and commenting. Thank you for the compliments.
Matt, been watching your channel for a while now, especially your kayaking around NYC. Props to you for showing a side of our city most folks will never see. Keep up the good work!
Thank you! Appreciate you watching and commenting. Means a lot to me.
Wow not seeing your comment, I wrote the same thing.
2:56 Happy Birthday 🎂🎈
This was without a doubt the most beautiful paddle you have done. I'm very familiar with the area but your video perspective was truly awesome. Thanks for posting.
You're welcome! Wow, thank you very much! I really appreciate it. This means a lot to me.
I just went ahead and donated to the Bronx River Alliance. Even better, I got a company match from my employer YAY!!! I've been falling out of love with NY lately after 10 years living here. Your channel is the best thing that could have happened. I really want it to become greener and cleaner. Thank you Matt.
This is such an AMAZING comment. Thank you soooo much. I really appreciate you watching and commenting.
WOW!!!! Thats one of my absolute happy places since 1978. Pelham Bay Park is indeed a gem. I've been through many trails many times over the years. I've photographed quite a few insects and natural backgrounds and landscapes throughout the park. I've also cleaned up a few times in various areas. There is a superfund sight that runs parallel on the right hand side headed north on the drawbridge. They need to let the grass grow on it to support the birdsetc. Other than that its a beautiful place with many fond memories. Thank you for sharing your perspective on the water. Beautiful scenes. You almost made it to Davids Island.I'm sure you'll do more videos of this wonderful park.Happy Birthday!. 👍👍👍
Thank you! Appreciate you watching and commenting. Yes, there's so much more to explore around there.
I'm seeing things here I didn't even know existed in BX.👍. Happy birthday🎉
Thank you! Appreciate you watching and commenting.
What an amazing place. I can only image that the whole of Manhattan once looked as this does today. And if you ever find birthday balloons ON YOUR BIRTHDAY again please tie them to the front of your kayak and paddle proudly the rest of the day.
That's funny. Thank you! Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Happy Birthday and Thank you! As a Bronxite, I approve this video! ❤❤❤
Thank you! Appreciate you watching and commenting. Means a lot to hear that from a Bronxite!
It’s unbelievable how much crap the lazy and disrespectful members of society will leave behind
It doesn’t take much to clean up after oneself and take it away but some have no shame in tossing their garbage into the environment and letting others pick up after them
At least some of us care about the world we live in
Thank you for another fine video of the beautiful surroundings you have there 😊
@@liveloud9894 Thank you so much!!! 💪 I agree 💯%. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.

Happy Birthday. I use to go fishing and clam digging there. Those houses have been there for years. They look different from what i remember them being though. I also use to launch my inflatable from Glen Island.
The Boulder formation i believe use to be a foot bridge. In High School my marine biology class did trips there.
Thank you! Appreciate you watching and commenting.
I wish I can describe it but the combination of your commentary and the water is so soothing. I also love that you find history through out all the nature. Since the bronx river video I cant stop watching your content, thank you for posting !! Btw Happy birthday!🎉
Thank you! Appreciate you watching and commenting. That means so much to me!
I live in New York and I always tell ppl we have nature in the city, you just have to go find it... Just found your channel and i really enjoy it
This video really shows a beautiful area of the Bronx. Hope you'll check out other videos of mine when you have time. Thank you for watching and commenting. There's even elements of beautiful nature in some of our worst waterways. That's what I'm trying to show.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors i just watched the one you went down on the Bronx River... Crazy how many ebikes and scooters were there...
I love that you are doing this! The Bronx has many great places. It's unfortunate, that like many urban areas, there are locals who don't appreciate or take care of it!! Happy Birthday!🍰Get you some awesome cake, bread and cannoli at Aurther Avenue! 😋

Hi Matt! This is Tai - one of the kayakers you met at Hog Island. Very cool to see the final video!
The birds you saw: Cormorant(s), White Heron, Common Loon, Herring gull, Laughing Gull.
The two floating houses near Hog Island are privately-owned.
There is a hiking trail that leads to that spot. :^)
Looking forward to more video!

Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
My old stomping grounds when i was dating my wife-to-be! We did hike the trails and swim off the rocks past the end of Orchard Beach. Beautiful area! And the large black sea bird is a cormorant. After a swim, they stand with their wings spread to allow them to dry, as they're not waterproof like other shore bird's feathers.
Yes, thank you. Thanks for sharing your experience with the park. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
In many of your kayak videos it's often occurred that it would be so helpful to know the NOAA chart of the location. Mentioning the NOAA chart # would allow us to familiarize the site so water depth at low tide etc is known. Studying the area is part of the enjoyment. Also, equipment discussions from time to time would be fun for those of us who are kayakers.
I appreciate the comment and will take that into consideration. I try to keep it a little more light, less technical and more focused on exploring nature, views and wildlife. They're are so many directions you can go making these videos. I'm trying to find the happy balance for my subscribers. I'm a work in progress and def open to flexibility and learning what people want. Thank you!! 😊
You may wanna rethink kayaking the Gowanus Canal. I mean, they made a comic book villain based off of its pollution levels. Haha
I know they've done some level of clean-up although not completely. There's a group called the Gowanus Dredgers that canoes the Gowanus Canal regularly.
I remember reading an article in the 1980’s that to demonstrate how polluted the Gowanus was, they developed film with the water.

What a nice and varied coastline and clear water. As a West Coaster who has never been to NY, I got most of my knowledge of "New York" from television and movies and the various place names (New Rochelle from the Dick van Dyck Show, or cityscape shots from The Odd Couple or Welcome Back Kotter, etc..) but really did not grasp the very complex geography of all the boroughs until 9/11 when you wanted to know where places were from the news stories. Pelham bay looks unchanged from probably what Stuyvesant saw from his ship in the 1600s. Very peaceful. Do New York City dwellers who seem to impart "New York" attitudes even get out to these places or even know about them? Horseshoe crabs sure are alien looking. Great day for a kayaking! Keep up the great job!
Wow, amazing comment. Thank you for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
Much of PBP is actually landscaped, the area around Orchard Beach especially, going back to the days of Robert Moses, who was the parks and parkways czar in the 1930's and 1940's,
Kayak over here pretty frequently, cool to see it getting some hype!

We used to prowl around Pelham Bay park to shoot bows. There are a bunch of owls and hawks that live around the mansion. I think I've been on Glenn island . Love the wierd floating shacks and the boulders. My buddy once came upon a mob hit that the cops had just found. We also camped one night at -5 F. That was a rough night.

BTW, those boulders on these islands are known as glacial erratics. They were formed by the receding of the North American Ice Sheet. Many geologists believe they come from Long Island, which was the southern most boundary of the ice sheets and even as far away as Virginia.
FYI, for future excursions, on the Southwestern rim of Orchard Beach is a 1/4 mile stretch of open beach that is wild and rugged where you could land your kayak.
Yes, def familiar with glacial erratics. I especially love the ones on the beach at Wildwood State Park and at Manorville Hills County Park. Both on Long Island. Thank you for watching and commenting.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors The most famous glacial erratic in the area is the marvelous stone in North Salem, NY. It is purported to be the burial mound of a Viking chieftain. The boulder stands atop three much smaller stones. It is alternately known as St. Brendan's Stone and is attributed to St. Brendan the Navigator or one of his party. It has been used as a ritual site for witches in the past several decades but is really just kids playing around.
Meantime, there are also allegedly remnants of an ancient village above the stone but on private property. It is said to be easily seen on Google Maps but is largely in the eye of the bolder, so to speak.
