G'day Ronny, Mate that was one of the nicest modified I've watched, the bloke was very natural & easy going + his 80 series was a no-fuss
well-thought-out setup.
Safe Travels Mate, Steve.
Such a good owner. Calm and natural, he remined me my father. Well-built rig!
Thanks for the vid, Ronny.
Sasha from Russia
My favorite 4wd in the world. 80 with a simple 1HD-T.
My dream 4be is an 40th anniversary 80series Landcruiser
33:43 This has changed my life.
Mine too
same.. just went & tried it on my Car.. it works
:-)))
Ha ha brilliant. What a legend
best dashboard ever on these pre 1996 models. Just 80 series LOVE!
What a great casual look around John's vehicle. I have just purchased one similar but non turbo and already taken note of things from this video to help me with mine. Ronny your videos are always informative and I have enjoyed every one of them I've watched so far keep up the great work.
That 80 Series is a similar color like my husband's and just as clean looking!
Both of you guys are my favorite and most informative off-road experts ! Thanks for sharing your vast knowledge :|
Howdy from the US. I love then you post about the 80 series it really helps me with ideas for mine. Keep up the good work and have a good day.
Such a cool owner! Super calm, natural and nice! I need to update my profile photo - moved from Discovery 2 to a Patrol from 2009. Final production in Europe.
This episode was awesome, great dude, knows his stuff, really enjoyed this one RD, 🍻
It’s given me some more ideas and solved one delima I had, which was side/rock rails /bars, after have std Toyota side plates on the 2 new Hilux’s, swore I’d never have or run plates again, always filled with stones, crap, hard to clean and also in muddy tracks you would be pushing mud with them rather than sliding over the mud or through it, adding to chances of getting stuck and extra load wear and tear on everything, I wanted rock sliders and couldn’t find anything that I was happy with, I found what I am after watching this thanks to the Bar work, which also solved my rear bar requirements I was after, which all came about because of his front bar, if that makes sense, I’d all but decided to stick with ARB Deluxe BB, I didn’t really like, 100% the look of the bar and the rear option wasn’t right for I wanted either until seeing this and then going to the Powerful 4 x 4 website and found front bar, brush bars, rock sliders and rear bar and carriers exactly what I was after, so stoked about that.
This series even without doing a build etc is so good, really some of my fav vids you do, great work and some really great characters like this dude. cheer RD and those men and women who share their machines 🔥🤙
He looks likes to party and He seems like he goes offloading and camping not overlanding. new favorite person you have interviewed. multiple likes from me!!!!!
Thanks again Ronny..FFS I have a lot to learn....and your interviews with some really clued up people is my classroom...
Good informative video. Owner seems like a top genuine bloke, good thought out mods
Such a great series of videos!
He's missed the oil restrictor when he installed the head on the engine haha, not first heard of it
Yes! the Mighty 80 have had mine 17 years.
Awesome have a great time
Love it. My 80 has easily been the best car I’ve ever owned. Can’t wait to get it back on the road
HoonTV same here. Radiator replacement turned into knuckle rebuild, brake line replacement and u joints.
Happy to take you out in mine when it’s done 👍🏻
READY FOR SUMMERNATS - Toyota Landcruiser PANEL VAN build ua-cam.com/video/hDt9VbQhiVU/v-deo.html
Great video Ronny. I'm frothing for another 76 series modified, hurry up!
Great episode. Would have liked to hear more about the brakes if there have been any mods/upgrades. Also have and LC 80, love the vehicle.
Great interviewee.
Loved it
The episode where “th” went to die
Regarding the upgraded headlight globes Ronny - unlike when you put higher wattage globes in regulated 240v power sockets / lights etc in the home, putting higher wattage globes in a 12v vehicle makes no output brightness difference. This is due to the car voltage being much less voltage and less regulated stability - think pure sine / modified sine wave 12v inverters..
All it does do is load up the power being drawn and sucks more juice out of your battery and / or alternator.. I’ve tested this many times over the years and can confirm it makes no difference, just draws more money out of your wallet 😂😂 👍
33:44 My god, you genius. Someone get this man a nobel prize.
Awesome 4wd 👍
Very nice.
I’d sure like to hear about Aussie Lockers.
I’m considering putting one in my rig since I’m stuck with LSDs.
My 96 1hz justed clocked 450k and not been rebuilt she slow but still strong as an ox
As solid as a 79, a lot more comfortable. Shame they are getting old.
We need more land rovers here!
Cool cruiser.
Got a D4 if Ronny even finds himself in Sydney
🤢🤮
land rovers are rubbish,still.good design,but very lacking in reliability,cost of spares,prefer something american.even toyotas are lacking,cost too much,expensive to maintain,very old tech,same as landrover.cant beat dana spicer,new process,bullit proof..cv.s are garbage.ifs garbage,.i have a diesel,german tractor engine,no computer,no glow plugs,puts out more than a twin turbo toyota 79 series.to get educated,need to watch american 4x4 vids.been doing it longer than any one..oh yeh,my low range,with 35" tyres,is better than a landrover.110..
@@phantomwalker8251 my 1975 series 3 may be rubbish, but it sure is stylish though.
@@phantomwalker8251 American rubbish wouldn't last 2 weeks in the out back that's why we have Nissan and Toyota for reliability don't believe me watch ronnys early bids the jeep broke down every trip they went on. Btw I'd take a land drover over a f series
Possibly still the strongest 4wd ever built
Don Kinzett they were and a fella I know who worked for Toyota when the 80’s were brand new, said the only reason Toyota updated them was they simply never broke down and never needed parts so they were literally losing money on lost parts revenue - that’s fair dinkum too !
fukthegoog right ... 👍
@@4WheelingInNSW - Was that the 1HD-T, 1HD-FT, or 1HD-FTE..? Which update do you think was the peak of parts reliability, longevity, cost, etc? Cheers!
Guy Menzies-Saunders mate I think it was mainly the 1HD-T but the 80’series overall, the gearbox and chassis, driveline etc - it was the whole package mate 👍
Not sure about others here, but I would love to know more about the HF radio setup, use and range. Your guest convinced me of its value!
Hi mate the HF radio was the only way that you could be in-contact with the world before the invention off sat phone and PLB's it can give you contact with stations up to 3000'ks away it may depend on radio conditions but with the conditions you may need to use different channels to make the distance there are about four different organisations here in Australia that you can use for your contact point like Austravel, HF Radio club, VKS737 and Bush Telegraph. I use the first two but if you go to there sites they do have some info on HF Radio and another site is Beadell Tours web site will also give you some info
When’s the mighty 60 video going to be uploaded?
It’s the next episode of Modified E65
80 is the best model. I wish some revival of this car. Same like J7 now. Because J20 start to be luxury and difficult. Just simple good beast, durable, capable car for guys.
Greatings from Mozambique, do you guys have in Australia the LJ78?, if yes do it a Review cheers
Dear John, would love to know where you found your @10:31 mr whippy am/fm aerial, or is she home made tig wire filler rod? Me currently coat hanger wire which you know gets a bit lumpy after a few whacks, cheers fella
Just had to laugh when after the "Cheap" rebuild that its pushing 1 litre in 100km. I guess you get what you pay for!
All this rigg needs is some more aggressive tires and it would look extra badass
Nicely built this one is!
I dont know alot about turbo motors, but im pretty confident that a turbo diesel motor isnt meant to lose 1L of oil into the catch can per 100kms. While the solution he found to the problem is whimsical, the ten thousand he saved on the 'mates rates' rebuild may be part and parcel of the oil problem he's having.
great truck regardless, jealous i dont own one!
Im the guy who was the rebuilder and its been a mystery to us, and about 4 other professional engine builders I've talked too. Its got perfect compression for the rebuild, it doesnt blow excessive blowby either hot or cold, but what it does seem to be doing is holding oil in the head at high engine RPM's (Kinda like how high power LS motors will push all the oil into the top end in drag racing situations).
Apparently it IS a bit of a thing with 1HD-T motors after they've been rebuilt too, they all seem to push a fair bit of oil out of the breathers once they've been cracked open from the factory.
Its gone 150K kms since the rebuild now, and we've never taken that pipe back off to see if its still pushing as much or settled down, but its obviously not detrimental to the engine!
@@ferremit remarkable! I had never heard of this issue with the 1HD-T. He's managed to get another 240k out of the engine so it seems to have stood the durability test.
ferremit do you have any info on how you returned it to the sump
At 18:49 the steering shock rubber mount looks fully perished
please do a video on uhf and hf radios
She's beautiful
hey ronnie why do you prefer a 79 over an 80?
Better than a 1hz. 420k on 1st engine with extractors. No rebuild. No worries.
Can’t see the links to the build page on an iPhone.
please do an 80 or 105 petrol turbocharged... something different
Awesome idea for the sand flag. I'm going to do that, too.
Also, I'm at the same...ish point with my rear springs. I daily drive mine and so I take most stuff out and off. However, loaded up, I'm maxing out my springs. I'm looking at air bags as a solution. Any thoughts/ opinions on which would be better; spring upgrade or air bags?
Vehicle: 1997 Toyota Hilux Surf KZN185 3.0TD (Prado 90/95 platform)
Rear springs: Lovells TRR 73
IF,you do actually go 4x4ing,do not get air bags.coils can only carry 1 weight, but leafs can carry any weight & still give std ride, but, they need to be around 1500 mm long, which, you cant do on a toyota.so,your stuck.in aus, they cant make springs yet.americans can.your best bet,is pump up shocks, with 1 line.to both shocks,so the air transfers,i have bags, work truck,f250, rides like a steel bar, when inflated,no travel.no good.mate with 80 series just got 500 kg coils fitted,2" higher, nothing you can do.progresive coils, maybe,if made right..a guy yrs ago set up his 4x4 for a trip, had new coils fitted, great, after trip came back to shop complaining it rode like a go cart.,mate told him, yup, coils.
Old post, so you may have figured something out, but have you looked into parabolic leaf springs. From what I understand they're basically the same as a progressive coil spring but in a leaf. Might be worth looking into if your still needing a solution.
How are these compared to gq td42 . Which is more reliable
Ronny will be you getting an ISUZU on the show anytime soon? :-).
isuzu what,??.landrover,?,colorado,.?.mate,.if it doesnt have 2 diffs,real low range,6 cyl tdi,why bother.!!.
Rear right tire looks like a may be a bit flat
What are the diff breathers for?
Did you remove both the front and rear sway bars?
No mate still has the sway bars in
Is that Alf from neighbours
Is it bad that I skip straight to this section 24:00 ?
Thank God it's a manual
People did hear that!!!!!
He got the Cruiser in 2005, an 80 series one. Probably with couple of 100 k miles in the odometer and he has run more 400 k!!!!
Just one rebuild
I have liked your vehicle but in Uganda they don't allow importing vehicle older than 15 yrs
14L/100kms in the desert. Bloody hell our 1HZ with after market turbo gets like 19L/100kms on the highway empty lol
Im smelling a bit of bullshit with that economy
Have it tuned for the correct AFR.
Ronnie you never touched on diff locks on his 80 series, are Australian 80's not fitted with them?
it looks like the factory diff location for the switch has something else there so probably doesnt have them, they only came factory in some gxls/40th anniversary and all sahara models
this is australia,we get all the basic crap.they have centre diff lsd, [same set up as 1986 jeep cherrokee],,woopeee.lsd rear i think, but, toyota lsd,s dont work...even my xlt bronco, has nothing.just chrome.but lsd front & rear.THAT WORK.
lol thats one way to solve a cock up of a rebuild
Nice I win
Would like to see a review on a petrol 80, there are plenty out there. Wanting to see if someone sets them up differently to a diesel considering fuel range\limited access to fuel in remote locals
Ronnie do you use "what3words"? A friend in the fire service put me on to it. Its a map of the earth divided into 3m squares. Every square has three random words that name it.
raft.frozen.palace
Blowing out a liter of oil every 90k? Sounds like that rebuild job didn’t go so well mate.
70 series vs 80 series?
Has anyone else found Ronny's videos are really low on the volume level?
I find a lot of other channels are fine I can watch them on my laptop and hear, but its always hard with Ronny
I run mine through a bt speaker box wi fi super loud 10 metres easy .
No, using reasonable quality headphones I never need more than 50% volume.
Through a Chromecast to TV fine
Geez this car is a mess - it will do my head in.
👑👑👑👑💪💪💪👋👋👋👋🍀
1st not 1st
Congratulations. You must be so proud 👏👏👏
Always excited for some 4 Wheeling in Australia
180,000 miles or the 290,000 km for a diesel motor is sad, like that is nothing. My sister had a 1995 Nissan pathfinder or the terrano with 350k miles and still has orginal motor. Dad with a 7.3l with 500k still factory injectors and motor.
Many 1HDT engines built from 1990-1994 had big end bearing failures due to a manufacturing fault, effected engines usually didn't even last that long.
On the plus side, most of these engines have had the bearings replaced by now.
JP Onefourseven facelift 1hd-ft engines shouldn’t have this problem either
You'd want to get your gear right on that hill at the start of the video, jesus.
What actually happened to the motor? I thought toyotas were supposed to have bullet proof engines. 290k seems weak.
From towing patrols every time he went bush? 😀
Yeah hi the big end bearings that were put in the 1HD-T motor when manufactured were not made properly eg the hardening process and given time then failed this problem didn't come to light till later and was rectified on later models it was only limited to the 1HD-T motor
Na man, more rangers
It’s only a 1hz not a 1hd sorry 😐
You think you know better than the guy who has owned the car for 15 years? It sure looks like a 1HDT.
Yea you might be right sorry I thought all 1hd engines were twin cam electronic but that just the 1hdt fte the turbo 1hz is known as the 1hd my bad
@@zacjohnson1500 1HDFTE is still single cam but with 4 valves per cylinder.
1HDT is more similar to the 1HZ, the main difference apart from the turbo is that it has direct injection.
Did he say 40Litres per 100???
Shaun Sharma no - 14
14
Hey mate it's 15l per 100 across the Desert sand tracks fully loaded
@@johnclayton5386 Thats preety damn good, how much do you get daily driving?
@@shaunsharma8104 13 to 13.5 depends on how hard i put my foot into it the figures 15l was doing the hay river track so not to hard on the bus was sandy but not soft sand :)
Tell old mate not cool having clips around the belt ! I bet he wears socks with sandles
i do,feet dont sweat.
