Family owned one with a 2F for 30 years and we absolutely loved it. We had a farm so it saw a lot of mud, hills, water and what not. You could load that thing with barbed wire, cattle food, and a bunch of tools and it would just go no matter the terrain. Handling on paved road was crappy at best and yes, a 4 hour journey seemed endless and it certainly did have an impact on your kidneys and your back but off road was something else. Im actually in the process of buying back from a family member we sold it to.
We took the spare tyre out of the well and changed it to a 200 litre tank. Got 1300 km range. All the after market parts broke in under a year offroad on rough terrain, but the standard gear was bulletproof. Lent it to some drillers, who managed to roll it twice on straight graded roads in the following 4 months. Main problem was the narrow radiator, which caused overheating when the temperature was over 45°. One day at 52°, the battery boiled dry. Fortunately, parking on the side of a dune or dam allowed us to roll start for the next week. Used a snap strap between bull bars on 2 of them to pull start one in reverse. Very reliable. The snorkel allowed us to go through fairly deep rivers, ie, water up to the doors, crossing Coopers Creek etc, but wasn't a roof snorkel. They seem awesome. Worst day was getting a flat going downhill on a long bridge and running down through the gears until the rear left caught fire. The 8000 detonators on the back seat came out first. Second worst day was driving it to my house in Brisbane, where I parked in my apartment garage and we had to climb out the back door, as it was the same width as the parking space. Very embarrassing. My girlfriend thought I was an idiot.
Been in love with these humble champions since the family trip to Pamir plateau on the Chinese side in 2002. That retired governor car drove on no roads but was capable of creating some. Absolutely amazing.

I brought a 60 series and took it to PNG. It's been on some of the tuffest tracks imaginable, and always gets me home. I have pulled out trucks stuck in mud, and many newer flashier 4wd! However yes the ride is terrible,uncomfortable etc. But a little discomfort is much better than getting stuck in the middle of nowhere. In my opinion its the number one choice if you need something that can take you to nowhere and back!

Great video, I love my non turbo 2H ,86 model, its not mint but is very good, its a strange model as it has many factory options like freezing cold AC, inclometer, rear heater ,cloth seats, carpet, yet it has barn doors ,manual windows, it is amazing offroad, flexes suppurbly ,climbs anything in low range, I acually love driving it ,its a feel good drive, it steers like a houseboat, it wouldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding, and cannot hold speed limits up most hills, but i love driving it ,mine has done over half a million kms and the 2H engine has never been opened, and it is dry as a bone, not a single oil leak from anywhere ,rust, i had it all repaired, converted and rust proofed the best i could,A pillars , that bloody roof at the gutters ,and I did a full doors off colour change from white to 464 beige, mine still has the grey split rims on it with skinnies , its just got to the stage I need to overhaul the H55 gearbox and transfer before next large trip or extreme offroad ,else i would drive it around and across Ausralia tomorrow without a worry, extras, ARB front bar, twin lockers ,aux batttery, Barret self tune HF, with all RFDS ,standard UHF,27MEG CB radios in a roof console , light weight home made aluminium fridge slide, no drawer system best to keep them light as possible
I love my 87 fj60. I’ve had it for 15 years and I can honestly say it is the best designed, best running truck I’ve ever had. The body is beautiful, timeless lines. It’s not huge, but it has plenty of room. Yes, it’s prone to rust. And don’t ever buy one that’s been off roaded. Mine is a North American standard model. 240k miles and doesn’t burn a drop of oil. If I didn’t own it, I probably would look for something smaller, that gets better mileage. But for me, and my lifestyle, it’s perfect. Good video.
Purchased an 87 FJ60 last September, after changing gaskets, hoses, seals, etc. it runs like a dream. If you're looking to get one of these, get in early because they're rising in value everyday! I'm 22 and afford maintenance and parts on my own. It's tough but a labor of love.
Have owned an "86 fj62 sahara auto on gas/petrol for 22 years has done 630.000km, daily used, others have come and gone, just done 2 7000km trips in the outback and going again shortly, best car ive owned, no not selling anytime soon. Weak points, slow and auto gearbox just put the third one in, last one only lasted 350.000km, not to bad I guess. All the rest still going strong, only replaced peripherals eg starter motor, radiator, discs etc.yes still have the rear air-conditioning and all electrics still work and no rattles! Needs paint but then, paint is like chrome it dont get you home.

He doesn't own it anymore, but he took great care of it and absolutely loved it. If I had the money, I would have bought it off him in a heartbeat! Iconic, legendary, reliable as hell, gorgeous and a whole lot of fun!
My Dad bought an ‘84 in 1987 and I gave him a hard time, as all the LCs I had seen were rusted as soon as they got home. He said “This one won’t, I took it to Rusty Jones for rust proofing.” “Oh Dad, that’s a scam.” It’s 38 years old now, I still drive it and the only rust it’s had was the front door edges. At 140,000 miles it’s only appreciating.
We have a 1987 HJ61 VX in Washington State. It's a JDM and one of the first in the state. It attracts a lot of looks and questions and we absolutely love to drive it. Still one of my all-time favorite rigs.
The biggest problem if you live in a place with real winters, like I do in Canada, is rust, rust, rust. Be realistic about what you can handle if you're buying one. Unless you have a sizable garage and the ability to weld stay away from any rust. Always male sure to check the air cabin air inlet under the cowl. If that is rusted out its a pain to fix and water will leak into the cabin in the rain. Water leakage can be a huge problem from other places too. If you're looking to buy one spray it down with a hose or take it through a car wash and check for water leaking down into the driver and passenger footwells. Even lift the carpet.
I absolutely love the 60s - I have an 80 myself as it's just that little bit nicer to live with in regards to running costs and maintenance, but a close mate has a fairly tidy 3F petrol one and in terms of styling and how it drives, it's such a cool old rig.
Bought an FJ62 from a one owner and drove it about 2k miles before I found out the spark plugs were shot and the air filter was clogged, yet still chugging along. It also barely had any oil in it. Of course I got it all fixed, and now runs much better as should. These trucks are a different breed of durability.

I have owned my base model '89 FJ62 with the 3F for 25 years now. My daily drive and sitting at 340k kms. This vehicle cannot be compared to other 4x4's. I will be including it in my last will.
Just want to provide a few corrections 1) If you want Apple carplay or Android auto, you don't want a 60 series. 2) Is it safe? Very, it is to slow to crash into something 3) It is REALLY cool!
This and the Nissan Patrol GQ Y60...... Awesome. Why Landrover (and I'm a Landrover fan) couldn't make something as good as these......I'll never know.
I would just like to say, 42k in 1986 is 122 thousand Australian dollars in todays money, consider it equivalent to a 200 series GXL Sahara now a days, note it also carry’s the same name. Quite amazing to see the difference in todays 4wd luxury in comparison to yesteryear’s.
I had an '84 FJ60 with California emissions control on it. The emissions control system is all vacuum and mechanical. It looks like a Rube Goldberg snake pit. Leaks are hard to find and make it run horribly. Also, the power steering pump is above the air pump. If the PS leaks, the fluid will fry the bearings in the air pump, which will then freeze. The air pump belt also drives the water pump so, when it breaks, instant overheat. Toyota thoughtfully designed it so you can rob the compressor belt to run just the water pump and alternator. Who needs a/c anyway? Bottom line, after 5 years I sold my 60 and bought a full factory locked FZJ80. I couldn't be happier.
My godmother drove a 60 Series Sahara either in this colour, or khaki. Either way it was an absolute beast of a car - could hear it screaming down the road, from miles away! Music to my ears ☺️!

I've got a 1986 hj61 sahara the same as that one and it still has the rear ac it's a clear ducted that goes over the back of the rear seats on the roof liner and it has a rear ac box next to the tail gate. The rear heater is under the centre console and can be turned on with a switch on top of the centre console

In Canada just finding one for sale that isnt totally rusted thru is a find. Had my 83 BJ 60 parked for a few years. Got it back on the road. Great slow tough little vehicles. 26mpg.
The fun part is these were a big improvement on the 55 series let alone the short wheelbase 40 series. I remember thinking how much smoother and more refined these were. How times have changed.
The rear ac controls control a separate evaporator and fan that sits in the far back right side of the cabin in a noticeable box which was obviously removed in that one, also there's a heater under the centre console. Is this the first dual climate car ever? Nice specimen. 9:22 2H petrol ...LOL I loved & miss my fj60 and love my hj61 powered fj62 as a daily, its not slow even when towing. And its like a rolls Royce comfort wise compared to my old fj55.
So much true words. I bought one in Europe, from Belgium and and picked it up to Germany, but it was a lot work to do... and much more money to spend :D I was to optimistic, but i think this car is so good looking and unique, it's worth it. I didn't know that the 60s from Australia are running 12V and not 24V electricity systems. Weird that Toyota still put unpopular 24V to the European marked, but ok. I own a hj60 1985 5 speed diesel and I have to disagree with your opinion on gears and oversteering, I think thats just you not being used to the car, sorry. The car is amazing and drives better then newer cars I've owned, no mods done and so far on the clock 822000 klms I replaced the engine with 2h motor at 800039klm same gearbox untouched same with diff, shes a tough beast!
I would really love a 60series, however they're so hard to find and are so expensive in England. So currently I'm just stuck with a 3rd gen hilux surf...
Have an 84model hj60 bought from a family friend when it had 80000km on it in 1988. Odo stopped 20 years ago at 502000km and still daily driven now. No rust in the body and will restore it to brand new if it ever gets retired.
I had a hj60 cruiser for7 years, cheap, easy to maintain if you know how, I towed my 6 meter boat, another guys car, and boat out of the water at the boat rampwith it easy, were $25k new, and you will pay that now for a good one. Mancruiser.
Great episode, bit disappointed to see a Sahara as the demonstration vehicle... maybe a bench sest, with quarter windows and wind up windows.... rust is a real issue... also the 60 was the last hand built LandCruiser.

I owned a HJ60 86 and a HJ61 88, the 61 motor was Toyota putting it all out there and done it so well, I loved my 61, that use to belong to Fred Hollows, I trade it in on my prado 120 gx 1kdf 08, wouldn't have it any other way, 0 what a feeling .
I had a petrol 60 series then an fj62 and I loved driving them but serious off roading, they are not that tough, I broke a cv joint, the gear box and rear axle studs. The LSD they come with don't work so I got auto diff locks back and front but in the end I swapped it for a Nissan patrol petrol with coil springs which left the old land cruiser for dead, no comparison and the patrol driveline was much stronger , bigger axles, tougher gearbox , better cv joints and the LSD was the best, no diff lock required. So having both, I highly recommend the patrol over the land cruiser
mate 60s rule just need to tighten steering box throw some new rod links at her there tough as last for eva im doing a ground up resto on one now.60 for life !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's exactly what I've done, among other things, huge difference, running 33s so the vagueness exaggerates, but like one tester said 30 something years ago " just keep going regardless".

That ‘disgusting’ tray in the front is the coin holder. Every car we had, that is what dad used it for, problem now is we don’t have many coin feed parking metres
When you see one of these pull out into the left lane move to the right as you know it will take them a hundred centuries to get up to speed. (Unless they pull straight to the right lane like a flog that is).
The vague steering and harsh ride is all I need to know, as I don’t think I’ll ever get a chance to drive one. A couple of these in my local area owned by rich old guys and I drool, but now I know I won’t want to own one. Obviously my (now sold) 200 series was a different animal
Yes, the turbo diesels might be ok, but I had a petrol automatic - slow as a dog to take off and go up hills. Sucked a lot of juice too. I have an old Jackaroo now - a lighter car, performs better on the road, might not be as tough off road, but tough enough for most purposes.
Safety is the package combination of the car and driver. Lack of tech transpires to a driver that is always attentive, engaged, alert and aware. These older tech cars never survived this long being "dangerous". Conversely new tech cars that have crashed did not live as long due to being "safer". If you were to chose between a safer car or a safer driver (that is steering, accelerating, braking and anticipating etc) the vehicle, I would rather a safer driver than every passive safety gear with tech that compromises the driver alertness and skill diminishing tech.

Just another thing - the back seat folds flat to the same level as the rear storage so you can put a mattress on it!
12ht with a few mods like more fuel/boost, intercooler and exhaust really wakes up these old fossils
In the Sahara the rear had AC/heating piping overhead with a rear compressor. They always get removed.

I've got a 1986 hj61 sahara the same as that one and it still has the rear ac it's a clear ducted that goes over the back of the rear seats on the roof liner and it has a rear ac box next to the tail gate. The rear heater is under the centre console and can be turned on with a switch on top of the centre console

In Canada just finding one for sale that isnt totally rusted thru is a find. Had my 83 BJ 60 parked for a few years. Got it back on the road. Great slow tough little vehicles. 26mpg.
I'm bringing back an '82. I think that suspension might be a little off if it wanders that bad, maybe just needs new bushings etc.
Steering box as well.. You can adjust the castle nut but a reconditioned one made it point where I turn it (onroad anyway)
The fun part is these were a big improvement on the 55 series let alone the short wheelbase 40 series. I remember thinking how much smoother and more refined these were. How times have changed.

The whole rear a.c setup is missing that's what the control is for the rear roof mount a.c
That short wheelbase makes the profile. Beautiful truck.

The rear ac controls control a separate evaporator and fan that sits in the far back right side of the cabin in a noticeable box which was obviously removed in that one, also there's a heater under the centre console. Is this the first dual climate car ever?

I loved & miss my fj60 and love my hj61 powered fj62 as a daily, its not slow even when towing. And its like a rolls Royce comfort wise compared to my old fj55.

I was to optimistic, but i think this car is so good looking and unique, it's worth it.
I didn't know that the 60s from Australia are running 12V and not 24V electricity systems. Weird that Toyota still put unpopular 24V to the European marked, but ok.

I own a hj60 1985 5 speed diesel and I have to disagree with your opinion on gears and oversteering, I think thats just you not being used to the car, sorry. The car is amazing and drives better then newer cars I've owned, no mods done and so far on the clock 822000 klms I replaced the engine with 2h motor at 800039klm same gearbox untouched same with diff, shes a tough beast!
I would really love a 60series, however they're so hard to find and are so expensive in England. So currently I'm just stuck with a 3rd gen hilux surf...
Have an 84model hj60 bought from a family friend when it had 80000km on it in 1988. Odo stopped 20 years ago at 502000km and still daily driven now. No rust in the body and will restore it to brand new if it ever gets retired.
I had a hj60 cruiser for7 years, cheap, easy to maintain if you know how, I towed my 6 meter boat, another guys car, and boat out of the water at the boat rampwith it easy, were $25k new, and you will pay that now for a good one. Mancruiser.

Great episode, bit disappointed to see a Sahara as the demonstration vehicle... maybe a bench sest, with quarter windows and wind up windows.... rust is a real issue... also the 60 was the last hand built LandCruiser.

If you can find one that hasn't been absolutely flogged, then yep, provided it's been reasonably well maintained, then they can be a good buy
I owned a HJ60 86 and a HJ61 88, the 61 motor was Toyota putting it all out there and done it so well, I loved my 61, that use to belong to Fred Hollows, I trade it in on my prado 120 gx 1kdf 08, wouldn't have it any other way, 0 what a feeling .
I had a petrol 60 series then an fj62 and I loved driving them but serious off roading, they are not that tough, I broke a cv joint, the gear box and rear axle studs. The LSD they come with don't work so I got auto diff locks back and front but in the end I swapped it for a Nissan patrol petrol with coil springs which left the old land cruiser for dead, no comparison and the patrol driveline was much stronger , bigger axles, tougher gearbox , better cv joints and the LSD was the best, no diff lock required. So having both, I highly recommend the patrol over the land cruiser
The front door pockets would have fitted the ol’ melways street directory.

That's exactly what I've done, among other things, huge difference, running 33s so the vagueness exaggerates, but like one tester said 30 something years ago " just keep going regardless".

When you see one of these pull out into the left lane move to the right as you know it will take them a hundred centuries to get up to speed. (Unless they pull straight to the right lane like a flog that is).
FJ 62 was built until 1992 by Toyota Venezuela has the FZJ 80 was built until 2007 by Toyota Venezuela....

The vague steering and harsh ride is all I need to know, as I don’t think I’ll ever get a chance to drive one. A couple of these in my local area owned by rich old guys and I drool, but now I know I won’t want to own one. Obviously my (now sold) 200 series was a different animal
Yes, the turbo diesels might be ok, but I had a petrol automatic - slow as a dog to take off and go up hills. Sucked a lot of juice too. I have an old Jackaroo now - a lighter car, performs better on the road, might not be as tough off road, but tough enough for most purposes.

Safety is the package combination of the car and driver.
Lack of tech transpires to a driver that is always attentive, engaged, alert and aware.
These older tech cars never survived this long being "dangerous".
Conversely new tech cars that have crashed did not live as long due to being "safer".
If you were to chose between a safer car or a safer driver (that is steering, accelerating, braking and anticipating etc) the vehicle, I would rather a safer driver than every passive safety gear with tech that compromises the driver alertness and skill diminishing tech.
