  • took a walk thru the Dale Hollow National Hatchery and also fished in the Obey River below the dam. There seemed to be a lot of activity with fish hitting the surface but only managed a handful of trout on spinners. tried with a few other lures but no more fish.

When trout are rolling on top like that and I'm using spinning tackle. I will use a clear floater with a small black hair jig or beadhead nymph about 4 to 6 feet below the floater and reel it very slow. It usually produces fish after fish.

When I was 16 my brother, nephews and I went trout fishing in Hiwassee River in Reliance, TN. It was December and school had not been closed but a few days. We waded out into the river and I think all of us caught our limit. My brother developed pneumonia and was very sick. I remember when we got out of the water our legs were blue. The things we do when we're young. That was about 45 years ago.

Lake trout can get huge. I'm in south east Ohio. there are a lot of native brook trout in the hills close. the lakes have to be really deep to hold them in the summer. We have a reservoir not to far away for the village on Barnseville and Woodsfield area called slope Creek. It's 45 foot deep through the deep channel. It's rare to catch a trout in the creeks here but right across the river in PA and WV there are a lot of native Monroe lake is also close by and they are stocked and do hold them. I'm surprised they even stock them that far south but those mountain streams are loaded.

I've been fly fishing the Obey for a couple years now and the fish hitting top water near the dam were eating emerging midges. With a fly rod and the right midge pattern, 100 fish a day is well within the realm of possibilities.

The big ones are held for eggs. When the fishes are ripe, you can strip the eggs and the milk into a pot, take a feather and mix. If you want them to grow up wild (which is better, cause they attach better to the ecosystem) you can take hatching boxes with openings and put them into the stream, best near some gravel beds, where the youg ones find places to hide after hatching.
