If i fast 36 hr my head is light i'm afraid its hypo then coma will follow. What's your advice.
An excellent and intriguing podcast. I’ve done three fasts in my life (seven days and two four-day fasts) and often intermittent fast and cycle in elimination Diers. I’m over seventy now and would lik do another prolonged water-only fast of five to fliurtn days and learn about how to obtain all my nutrients without supplements. I’m not on any medications. I really dislike and even fear conventional medicine as Because I have seen it keeping people sick.
@@yenbacunata3430 I would suggest you eat a very small amount of walnuts and can find yourself to bed rest and get into a ketone burning off fat you've got to have bed rest if you're gonna do serious fasting Once your body has adjusted into fasting mode you can do it a light walk but no vigorous activity
*He keeps saying no oil. What kinds of oil? All oil. Do I stop eating fish high in omega 3 oil?*
*I've been hearing that "good" oils are important for brain health, testosterone, fertility, etc.*
I never tire of listening to Alan Goldhamer.
feel same way. 😂
Yer apparently he's Gey
What a near-coincidence. I never listen to him...

I believe the secret is that you give your body the chance to fix its tissue by not overwhelming it with digestion. Digestion takes a huge amount of resources from the body. Watch any injured or sick animal in the wild. It will rest and not eat. Makes perfect sense to me
That is a very good point. Animals do that.
Just finished 14 days at True North. Hard but good and a wonderful experience. Staff is amazing!!!
What do they charge for a 14 day stay and what’s included ?
I’m curious what it costs too… I’d love to do it just for general health
@@sophiapetros7602 I'm guessing no meals haha
@@J123_pound it’s an all-you-can-breathe Air Buffet with bottomless pitchers of water.
Great to hear. I expected Goldhamer's staff to be as enthusiastic as he is! Can't wait to go one day! Sounds powerful on all levels!
My 8-day stay two years ago turned my health around completely. I lost a little weight but more importantly it put me on a much easier path to eating completely pure, whole plant foods. Then I started going to the gym and I'm an entirely new person now.
He doesn't tell us what we want to hear but he tells us what we need to hear. Brilliant man.
I'm in general agreement with 70% of what he has to say but there is 30% that I don't agree with
I had the pleasure of staying at True North and doing a water fast. It was a life changing experience. I met the most wonderful friends that I still have to this day. Dr. Goldhamer is so smart, funny, a wealth of knowledge and incredible at what he does. I can’t wait to go back.
Me too
How much is the cost?
Thank you
It was around $3400, I don’t remember exactly for 13 days but I had a large room with attached private bathroom. I had additional services that were extra also. It depends on how long you’re staying, if you need labs etc. I would enter the extensive medical questionnaire and the doctor will call you to tell you if you’re a candidate to fast and for how long and that will determine pricing. It was worth every penny. Most people that go there always return because it’s such a great experience. They are booked for several months so start the process now. I believe it’s a $500 deposit to hold date but if you need to reschedule it still stays as a credit. I took a short flight from Southern California that was really inexpensive directly to the small airport in town.
@@CP-jv4xt That cost is really not so bad IMO, considering how transformative folks like you say it is. Was your 13 days including the re-feeding period? Did you fast like 7-10 days and then stay on longer to re-feed, or did you fast for 13 days and then leave? Thank you for sharing your experience!
It was not bad at all in the way of pricing. I’m not overweight but have a horrible sugar addiction and was hoping to reset my gut. I did 7 day fast with re-feed. The food there is amazing I’m still making several recipes I learned there. All SOS free. I had Dr Goldhamer adjust my neck and back which was much needed. They have other services as well along with yoga, lectures, and cooking classes. The staff was great!
One of the smartest doctor alive who has educated and saved many lives
Chiropractor*
Fun fact: in almost every state, chiropractors are licensed as physicians (the word means doctor, if you were not aware) and a quick Google search will show you that the education is nearly identical (to obtain the "doctor" status) with MDs routinely receiving additional work training in internships and residencies, while many chiropractors also receive additional training in specialized fields (pediatrics, radiology, rehabilitation, etc)
The more you know! 🌈
Edit: He's also apparently an osteopath, which is also a doctor.
I recently spent 10 days at True North. Every patient is evaluated on arrival by an MD or DO. Then, during your fast, you are checked on 2-3 times per day by other medical staff, and depending on the length of your stay, you will have recurring visits with your MD or DO, and finally you will have a check-out appointment with your MD or DO. Dr Goldhamer runs the facility, provides chiropractic services, gives lectures, mingles with the patients, etc. He has created a great atmosphere to get well, and be appropriately medically monitored.
The book Goldhamer wrote with Doug Lisle, The Pleasure Trap, is extremely valuable
Thanks
Thankyou
Take away: The body has an incredible ability to heal itself.
My life was saved through water fasting 🙏🏼
How so?
Super happy for you.
I did all the research and watched as much as I could about water-only fasting(several thousand hours). Felt great!
Couple years later I did another one and got a severe intestinal issue because of it. It took over a year of severe agony to heal and I'm still trying to get back to normal.
Please don't do pro-longed water-only fasting without medical supervision. No such option was unfortunately available in my area.
Fast responsibly!!!
@@vincentizghra6144 interesting and thanks for sharing that. How long were your water fasts? And what exactly caused the complications?
L❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
How????
Just finished four days of water fasting at home. Incredible what such a short window achieves. Feeling lighter, stronger, mentally alert. One day, I want to do a week or two at TrueNorth. This man is a revolutionary, saving lives and helping us learn how to live better while here. Deep respect!
Yes! I did a 7-day water fast back when I was clinically obese, and it helped to jump-start my weight journey back to the healthy BMI where I am now. Fasting is amazing! Even now, I occasionally have one fasting day now and then, to give my digestive system a day off.
@@zxyatiywariii8It’s amazing! And water fasting is an effective anti-depressant! I lost my mother last month and was spiraling into late night wine and junk eating. This reset pulled me out of the funk. I feel so much stronger dealing with the loss and all the practical stuff now. And it costs nothing! Will be spreading the word!
I did the water only fast at True North last summer. Did 3 weeks fasting +1 week refeeding. Great experience. Recommend highly. I'd like to do it right now but don't have the time off from work because of a new job. Battling cancer.
Cancer sucks.
Look into anti-parasitic medications to fight cancer studies
I'm so sorry. I've survived breast cancer. Of course work can be a real hindrance but wouldn't this be the optimal time for you to go back to TrueNorth, with Goldhamer's great results on cancer? Good luck!
@cecilieh2903 I don't have the time off work and can't afford not to be paid. I realize it might cost me my life at some point but this is the position I'm in unfortunately. I'm a single mom and limited resources.
@@duncanidaho1919already do.
That sucks! I’m so sorry! I wonder if True North offers some reprieve on rates in circumstances like yours. Then again, if in a new job. That’s hard. Maybe do some at home fasting in smaller windows. Perhaps they can assist via phone. My heart goes out to you! 💛💖💛
This episode is worth a Million Bucks!
Unfortunately, few want to do these cheap, easy, safe, and effective things to avoid or cure most Chronic Disease and Cancer.
So true.

Very true but I’ve done 10 day water only fast and it was very difficult ! Even tho doing 40 days is a goal of mine I can only imagine how difficult tht could be !
Thank you so much for inviting Dr. Alan Goldhamer again. Motivating, enlightening, life changing interview 🙏
This is fascinating! I have done intermittent fasting for going on 12 years now and I'm 56, just starting menopause, and in my 25th year of running. Even stepped it up to Ultras now. I am a believer in this way of life!
What are Ultras?
@@AAO579 Ultra marathons are running "races" that go beyond the standard marathon distance of about 42km (you'll hear of 50km 100km marathons etc, those are known as Ultra marathons).
I love Alan Goldhamer so much. I started water fasting in 2019 and it was really hard to find his content then - It’s amazing to see his wisdom spreading x
I spent two weeks at True North. It was life changing.
Did you fast on just water-or did you have an electrolyte powder. Very curious. I’ve been wanting to do a long water fast. Thank you for your time!
I ate very clearly before I arrived. I have been a vegetarian for 30+ years. But was a hardcore sugar addict. So, I kicked the sugar. I don’t take any medications, drink or do any drugs. I was having gallbladder issues and had one attack that sent me to the ER. But I refused to have an operation. So I went to True North to see if I could help myself. After a few days eating there, I did a 5 day fast, water only. Then re fed for a few days. And ended up leaving early because frankly, I felt great and I missed my dogs😁. I have not had to have surgery. Occasionally I get a little pang, I clean up my diet and I’m doing great. I do fast almost every day from 7 pm to 9 or 10. Hope this helps. Good luck
@@denisesmith209 Thank you for your response! I appreciate you! 🙏😁
On day 25/40 today. This came out right on time.
Without supervision? I am on day three of 40 without supervision. I am only overweight
How do manage working and fasting for long periods of time?
@@sealife13 you can always just do a fasting mimicking diet, a ketogenic diet. The best version being carnivore. You still get all the autophagy benefits and if you incorporate intermittent fasting you will lose body fat without damaging yourself with long term fasting.
@@KK-lg8uz Do you have examples of how you damage yourself when you fast longterm? My liver and kidneys are healthy. Just curious
@@sealife13 because with extended fasting you are going into a heavily catabolic state. Your body will start breaking down muscle tissue after about 72 hours without food. A ketogenic diet is also known as a fasting mimicking diet because you get the effects of autophagy. I think previously people thought that you only trigger autophagy in the absence of food, but it happens when insulin levels are suppressed, in the absence of carbs. So fasting can be great, but probably best not to go beyond 3 days. And if you're only doing this for weight loss why not just try a strict 0g carb carnivore diet and do daily intermittent fasting to start tapping into your own body fat storage. At least then you wont get muscle wasting, just make sure you're eating plenty of animal fat and protein in your eating window. Maybe a 4 hour eating window per day. Or even OMAD. It’s important you have no calories whatsoever when you’re not eating though. Get somewhere north of 100g protein per day. I eat between 150g-200g protein. Im 87kg and exercise every day. 100g of protein from ribeye, lamb and whole eggs would be my minimum. I use fruit occasionally for hydration, but it will get in the way of fat burning. Hope that helps. I'd also strongly recommend weight training and cardio, daily. The more muscle you build the less fat you will hold. Extended cardio also puts you into ketosis. Dr. Chaffee is a good resource to follow. Good luck.
I've had the phone call and did a distance fast. It was pretty amazing! I'm better off and would like to do more. Thank you Dr. Goldhamer, you and TNHC are doing such important work.
Oh how great to have an updated Goldhamer interview! This WFPB SOS free living is challenging as discussed without locating new friends or moving to Santa Rosa area for close supportive people with same life style. Maybe time for a change in geography.
Rich Roll is asking ALL the right question. And Dr. Godlhamer is at his best. What a fantastic interview session!
Dr. Goldhamer is beaming in this interview! Even more than he usually is. Every time Rich speaks, Alan listens intently while smiling ear to ear. Glad to see him doing so well, and still passionate about his work after *forty* years!
I didn't know True North is helping patients remotely now. I may look into it. I fall into the healthy/athlete category, but wonder if I could still benefit from maybe 7-10 days. Interested in the psychospiritual benefits as much as anything. Thank you Rich, as always, for the very illuminating and health-promoting conversation!
Thank you SO much for having Dr. Goldhamer on again. I am a huge fan and follower of what he advises, and it was such a delight to discover he was on your show today. I am 64 and a healthy (I think) Whole Foods plant-based sos free eater but struggle with a stressful job that impacts my sleep and probably aspects of my health that I’m not aware of yet. It’s my dream to spend time at True North someday, and this show was a reminder that it may be possible because it is probably affordable! Isn’t Alan just fantastic!?

So, so true!!! Dr. Golhamer is a revolutionary and a great healer!
Fasted at True North twice, once for 3 weeks and once for 2 weeks. Best thing I ever did for my health. Not easy but detoxed a lot and feel so much better. Terrific staff there, so safe and professional.
Can you not detox but not putting toxins in instead of putting nothing but water in?
How long into the fast before detox symptoms went away and you felt good?
I just finished another 5 day fasting mimicking session. It feels great. Im in very good physical condition, but I do this every 6 months. Always glad I did it..
Eating this way almost 6 years and it never fails when I go out to dinner with my family, the first thing they do is start figuring out what I can/should order. It’s exhausting. I know they love me, but I’ve got this! 😵💫🙄😂
😅 That's love and also a fun game when the menu comes!
Yeah, I hate that

Now I am a very healthy 62 years old young man doing Olympic lifting, Animal flow and Landmine workouts .
Thank you very much Rich.
I am truly gratefully to you for changing me to switch to whole food plant based food.
Dr. Goldhammer telling it straight as always. I needed this. Thank you 🙏
After watching a previous interview with Dr. Goldhammer (and Jeff Nelson at VegSource) - I did a 22-day water fast (not medically supervised) and it was great!! No hunger after day 2 or 3. I did get a "little light-headed" when I would stand up too fast. Lost 20 lbs. Amazing experience!! I think the "warning" at the beginning of this video is unfortunate / unrealistic. Most people (95%) don't have the time/money to go to the True North Health Center. Most people would have great success / great experiences - if they try a 5, or 10 day ( or 21 day ) water fast . That's assuming that the person doesn't have any serious health conditions (diabetes, etc) that would need to be monitored with adjustments to meds. I hope that (relatively healthy) people feel motivated to give water fasting a try.
Any idea how much of that weight loss was adipose tissue and how much of it was lean mass? Weight loss when what you're losing is muscle is not recommended unless you're already built like The Rock. If weight loss is your goal then I'd strongly recommend lifting weights and upping your protein intake in order to raise your basal metabolic rate and keep muscle while also running a slight caloric deficit.
I'm pretty sceptical about all this beyond the issue of muscle retention. I'd need to see some solid science to show it's having positive effects potentially due to promoting autophagy.
@@FlatToRentUK There was definitely a loss of some adipose tissue and lean muscle mass. I wasn't in any position / situation to get any exact measurements. ( it's very difficult to keep up any strenuous workout regime during a prolonged water fast ). Typically the loss ratio is 75% fat and 25% lean muscle mass (though the lean muscle mass normally, quickly comes back when you can re-start normal exercise / activities. The massive health crisis in the Western World isn't based on a slight difference in a person's lean muscle mass. Obesity, Diabetes, Heart Attack risk, High Blood Pressure - are killing millions of Americans every year. My goal is to make sure that: 1. My weight; 2. My blood pressure; 3. My resting pulse rate/my arteries are all perfect. After that - I'll worry about increasing my "lean muscle mass"
@@frederickkrewson638 It's a very fair point that it's hard to quantify the body composition changes, people aren't likely to have a DEXA scan before and after. However I'd be very surprised if it was only 25% if you were unable to do much/any resistance training while on a prolonged fast.
Clearly you're also correct about the wider issue impacting western societies. However how likely do you think it is that there will be widespread adoption of prolonged water fasts followed by significant increases in resistance training in order to regain the muscle lost? I really can't see it happening. So on a personal level and a societal level I'd revert to what I said before - increase protein, lift weights, eat a healthy diet with a caloric deficit. This will achieve weight loss, maintain/build muscle and almost certainly have better adherence than prolonged fasting.
The question is does prolonged fasting deliver extra benefits and I'd need to see some science confirming this. Because without them it sounds completely unnecessary.
Could you please give us some information on your “ re-feeding for a week after your 22 day water fasting”
@@EarthEncountersTravel - I eat a vegan diet, and after the end of the fast - I just ate sparingly - mainly eating fruit and soups for days 23 - 26 and then more or less resumed a more "normal" plant-based/vegan diet.
Big thank you for this podcast. I not only learned a lot but also got motivated to get back on my fasting routine.
This is a fun bit of serendipity - I've been struggling to get a fast going for a few months now. The food cravings have been out of control. But I did fast yesterday and woke up today feeling strong and committed to keep going. And then I saw a notification that this video had come up. Perfect timing 😁Thank you @richroll and Dr. Goldhamer - ❤Love you both!
I did a 4-month fast during lockdown as I didn’t want to go to the supermarket. Not only was it relatively easy it saved me a fortune in grocery bills. But what stunned me most is that as a sufferer of depression triggered by menopause, after the 3rd month something alarming happened - like my brain’s ‘Off’ switch had been clicked into the ‘ON’ position - it was a palpable ‘click’ like a tiny electric shock had occurred. I remember wondering “what just happened?” I hardly eat food any more, am nearly 70 with no health issues at all. Discuss……
What do you eat when you do?
This is fascinating - thanks for sharing! After the "switch" happened in your brain, did you notice a difference in your clarity or cognitive functioning?
You can't survive 4 months fasting. Fact
Were you just drinking water for 4 months?
At your age I'd be extremely concerned about your body composition. Sarcopenia will have been reducing your muscle mass by about 1% per year since around the age of 50. Fasting is going to hit the accelerator on depleting your muscle mass further. Obviously I have no idea about your body composition or if you lift weights a lot but strength is a huge indicator of a long and healthy life so do everything you can to build/maintain muscle mass.
Thank you for amazing information Dr Goldhamer 💕
hey i did 21 days of unsupervised water fast a few months ago. It was the best i felt in years. I wanna do 30 days next one.
How much water a day did you drink? Did you ever have electrolytes?
@@plants_and_wellness1574True North does distilled water only, no electrolytes. But trying unsupervised fasts myself I find it really gard to get oast day 8 doing it that way.
As a relatively healthy person going to True North was a game changer and I am truly grateful for having had the experiences (twice). Seven days and 3 years later ten days! I hope to go back again soon. Dr. Goldhamer is the real deal! Amazing man and amazing facility!
Thanks for the great interview. This protocol makes perfect sense. I commend his efforts.
I would like to hear Alan talk more about the rejuvenative and maintenance benefits of water fasting on specifically mental health issues. So many people out there with early dementia symptoms, declining memories, declining attention spans, various addictive tendencies associated with toxemia in the brain. There is a whole spectrum of benefits from regular fasting, in maintaining good mental health, so that individuals don't even begin declining too early in age on a wide variety of mental health issues. Fasting is said to also help prevent and even remove plaque from the brain, associated with Alzheimer's. As well stated by Alan in this interview, we have to interrupt the inception, progress and decline of many health problems today proactively, before they even get a chance to start and progress, by regular fasting and diet. For people who have mental health challenges, there is no better ongoing management & treatment, than regular and repeated fasting, supported by improved diets afterwards.
Great episode, thank you for having him on again.

I think a really important point made during this was people should REST during fasting. I personally have found it really super annoying when I am trying to fast when I am around people who are eating. I tell my boyfriend to leave the house and eat over at his parents or elsewhere. It's just something that triggers me. The combination of rest and making sure you have very low stress while fasting is not discussed enough.

squeaking in ears and pulse 39. I think You must prepare Your body for this first
Eating Non Processed Whole Foods, Fasting, & Cold Plunges is the trifecta!
Actually I'd put cardiovascular exercise, strength and good quality sleep above all those. A good quality diet would be in the second tier. Fasting is way down unless you're struggling to control blood glucose and/or body weight. Cold exposure has benefits but nowhere near the top ones.
Great episode !! 🙏🌱❤️💪
He is great! The only thing he didn't mention is love. Love improves connectivity and gratitude builds resilience and has immense health benefits.

Thanks Rich and Dr. Goldhamer!!! And epic podcasts of priceless wisdom!!! I am 51 and had a very tough time losing visceral/abdomen fat and could not build lean muscle. I found out I had Low Testosterone and so I made the decision to get on TRT injections. It has been a game changer! I have incorporated fasting protocols with intermittent(18:6) more plant based diet but I still eat eggs and goat milk, since I have restored my T levels to a healthy range I now have the energy to do regular intense cardio and strength training, which when I had Low T I did not a have any drive or energy to train in the gym. It is more validation to here in this episode how deadly visceral fat is to our health and now the fat is dropping off of me like it never did!!! And also in the realm of TRT alot of men who get on TRT who have high visceral fat have had the issue with testosterone being converted to estrogen too much, so losing the visceral fat kept my body from producing too much estrogen or converting too much testosterone to estrogen. I have known the great benefits of fasting for many decades, great to see it being shared on Rich's AWESOME platform!!!! Keep up the GREAT SERVICE amigos!!!!🙏❤

Maybe we should spend more time learning and talking about how to shift people towards being highly motivated
Highly motivated self selected people tend to be successful at everything, and then they rush to attribute their success to _______ [fill in blank with whatever they are passionate about]. And we believe them! lol
I think that Huberman with Peterson have broken it down really neatly. How you monitor and regulate your reward system to achieve great learning results and to better orient yourself in the world.
It was nice to hear JBP without him saying even single political sentence.
What I am trying to say is that it's hard to be an expert if everything. Buuut.... if we start addressing root causes in areas of metabolic health, mindfulness, and physique, I can see the amount of MD specializations dropping from hundreds to a few dozens, maybe a dozen or a half in long-term.
I did a 28 day fast at TN and it was one of the most pleasureable experiences of my life.
So informative. Funny guy, very entertaining.
Definitely gonna try this
Would love for Rich to have Dr. Lisle on too!
Only if Rich, Alan and Doug play a game of pickup basketball 😂
Only if you get Dr Lisle to be concise! He talks a lot and has a hard time making a point.
Early drops, nice!!
Alan is an amazing human being!
Excellent podcast. Thank you.
Great podcast, Dr Goldhamer is a real motivator and love his weird sense of humor, he’s a dynamo!!!!!
Awesome topic! Fasting is miraculous. Love this podcast!😊
Thanks for such clear and concise discussion. Love having this in my briefcase of gaming life
Great interview. I want to do a water fast from home.
This is great episode as always. I do long fasting 2 times per year under microdosing 🍄 . I never feel hungry or have cravings. I have always have such connection with myself and fasting + microdosing heals me in a deeper level.
Incredible interview! I’ve done 3, 5, and 10 day water fasts at home and they’ve been really helpful- I’m getting ready to do my longest one yet and this came out at the perfect time! Also for folks who haven’t tried eating WFPB and SOS-free, definitely give it a go… it feels SO GOOD to eat real food instead of the processed junk 😅
Do you just drink water with no supplements?
@@BM-7888 yup! Though you should ask your doc/health professional what supplements if any you’d need
I went to TrueNorth and water fasted for 10 days and refeeding for 5 days. It was a great experience. I just finished the book.
This is the best content on the subject
Pure Gold!!!!❤
I have been needing another 40 day fast. Let’s go ALAN GOLDHAMMER!!!
I've fasted for only 4 or 5 days and found it easy after the second day.
I'm wondering how much impact the 40 day fast ( or less if health warrants it ) has on healing/improving the brain. And eyesight.
Thanks again
I have done this 4 times and plan on undergoing my 5th in the not to distant future.
Good interview Rich.
Nice to have him back ⚡️
Dr. Goldhamer yessss! ❤❤❤😂😂
Love!
Dr Goldhammer is a hero 🎉
I credit him and The Pleasure Trap book to stick to VeganSOS ; I completed 20 days water fast (real tough)
Dr Goldhamer is amazing. I highly recommend his book with Dr. Lisle, ‘the pleasure trap’
Rich, finally….back to the reason I started listening…health, hard things, and heros. Thanks for not forgetting the origins of your podcast. I’ve almost left as a group with the change in the nature of the past years guests! But this was great! Soemthing we won’t hear elsewhere. Evidence based. Inspiring!
Also….we finally got there….the beard with the hair works! Beard and hat….no. Beard and hair. Much better!
