Make sure your units are set to centimeters and not meters. To bake it out to final mesh. Switch to FX mode, under MASH menu > utilties > switch MASH geometry type to instances. then under MASH menu > utilities > Bake Instancer to objects.
This was so much help, I placed a bunch of fences around my racetrack in minutes rather than doing it all manually one by one. Thank you for your help :)
First of all, great tut Mike, but I wanted to help and expand some of the info you gave us. For those of you having issues getting your objects to duplicate with the correct orientation. Try using an Offset Node and playing with the Offset Rotations.
Thank you SO much for this tutorial!! I've been working on an assignment that had a ton of buttons that needed to be on a specific path on my object, and this tutorial cut down on so much of extra work time!
What I like , (for what its worth) is that you go right to it. Which is what anyone looking for the answer wants, as my questions came up you went right to the solution,... Thank you...
I really enjoyed this one. A few things though. With the supports for the bench duplicating the curve you planned on using for the board distribution and using the same technique with a much lower amount would have been great for distributing the weight-bearing supports on the bench. Also IF I remember right you did a video on extruding an object along a path. This could have been used to create a frame that follows the path so that it looks like the boards are not floating in the air. So just using the same shaped curve three separate times could free up a lot of time speeding up the workflow. Thanks for the awesome tutorials.
U can also use motion path and create animation snapshot, usually when making repeating objects on characters like a zipper will try one method if it doesn't work the other one will.
I did this and it worked the first time. But if i try to do it multiple times in the same scene it crashes maya repeatedly and i cant seem to figure out how to fix it.
Thank you Mike. If you're still paying attention to comments, what happened to duplicating from animation? I tried creating an animated snapshot, and all I got was the same object duplicated x-number of times within itself.
I like your videos. In your model all boards are exaclty the same. At 1:11 you can see, that each board is slightly different depending on the angle to each other. I was waiting how you gonna handle that.
I was wondering that too. I'm not near my computer to try this, but I was thinking that you could try inverting the process by modelling the gaps: Create a single continuous volume with the shape of the curve and the height and width of the boards, and then use the method in the video to create thin volumes with the dimensions of the gap between the boards. Then apply a substract boolean operation to the first volume and voilà. It's dirty but it might work.
thanks for a great tutorial. is it possible to roll the instances around the curve? also can i put a gradient in so that the instances start off large and end up small for example?
@Mike Hermes Very useful video that pointed me in the right direction! However, I’m looking for a way to use a variable set of objects. Specifically, different looking planks (wrong word?) on a hanging bridge. Is it possible/recommendable to use this method, but having the objects alternate or, even better, be picked randomly? … If it is, dare I make a wish for a follow-up at some point? :-)
Hallo Mike. I just wanted to tell you that you are amazing, and thank you a lot for sharing all of this with us. I just started my road to become a 3D artist, modeler, several weeks ago. I am still getting used in the interface and tools and your videos and tutorials are helping me a lot. If you have any beginners advice for me, I would appreciate. Thank you
Hey Eldar and welcome to the wonderful world of 3D. My advice is to spend a fixed amount of time practicing every day, 7 days a week. No exceptions :-)
I bet you could have used that curve to create the bottom part and distribute it across the bench. Didn't really need to delete the curve so early in the process.
Great Tutorial Mike, thanks for sharing. Is it possible to get some more tutorials on Motion Graphics in Maya using Mash. Also workflow for Maya with After Effects. This is something that is hard to find in the internet, and definitely very interesting topic. Thanks again for the great tutorial as always!
Greetings Mike, whenever I tried to attach curves in the MASH network, my geometry doesn't follow the curve.. it offset somewhere in the space, why it's happening can you please guide me?
Ok so I know this is a little bit dated feedback, and im not the person who made the original tutorial, but I'd like to point out that I think I know what was causing your issue. I was having a similar problem in maya 2019 with MASH, turns out that the expectations of MASH are that your curve's first vertex point needs to be at world 0,0,0 and your object you're duplicating along the curve via MASH also needs to be at world 0,0,0 and then make sure you also have initial state selected. This was the only way I could get the assets to appear on the curve. Once this parenting happens, with both assets at world 0,0,0 -- you can then select both the curve and your MASH object (the one thats bound to your curve) and you can freely sorta move them around with the MASH functionality still working. Hope this helps someone.
this doesnt work for me. it ends up throwing my boards all the way off in the distance. even with freezing transforms. not sure why. i have maya 2022.3
I haven't been able to find the solution to this so far. when I attach my curve to my mash which is just a cube in this case, my array of cubes goes -y a ton and +x a bit, I have tried so many things but they never go anywhere near my curve. the only difference i can tell is that my curve is along the vertical plane, not a horizontal one please help
Well it is still so unintuive in maya. On the other hand, if you do it in blender, you can just use array modifier and then curve modifier and that is it.
If you understand nodes, ( which I am not saying you don't) then Maya is awesome,...old saying for Maya,...Maya is Nodes with Attributes Attached ... Open node editor, as a animator that drew on paper first before using computers, I hated them, but once I let go of all "Oh my gosh I didnt learn to draw to do this" brain, I became aware of the poeer in this software... Want to use dopesheet?, Its there,.. want to work with code? Its there,...use other 3d programs but topology is bad, bring it in to Maya,...rendering has massively improved.... Anyway, got to go back to working on my project.... Thanks Maya
With the world being what it is at this moment in time, I hope this little video will bring you some distraction. Stay strong and stay safe
AWESOME CLASS
Can this technique be used on the edges of polygons or NURBS circles?

Fantastic! I made a bead bracelet using this method and then used the curve to make the string. Two birds. I love it. Thanks a lot, Mike.
You are so welcome!

simply the best tutorial about this procedure!
I had no idea Maya would make this possible! Thank you so much for the great explanation

hey Mike !! thanks for the video! 💪 but maybe I saw a flag of Germany at 04:53 hehe 😜 a strong hug friend 🤗 from Granada!!
You did :-) Thank you

True! I think it's a software issue! Hope they fix it!
Holy Cow this was an AMZING tutorial!!! Thank you!!!
Thank you
Great, thanks for the tutorial!, I havent used this yet but I will use this to create a human spine for my game.
I really appreciate your videos, I've learnt some really great tips/tools through this channel! Thank you!
Nice thanks for this tutorial! helped get a bunch banisters on a train.
sub immediately, please keep al of these good tips videos coming weekly, thank you.

Every video is useful thanks Mike
Glad you like them!
thanks for your nice efforts and wonderful tricks.
what if you don't have mash in maya lt?
Keep going ! I like your tutorials ^^ Thanks

this is awesome but how do you put a shader on it?
Thank you MH
Very useful!
Thanks
Would be great if we had control over each board. In your reference image every board is tapered to the top and all gaps are equally spaced.
THANK YOU I LOVE YOU
Hey mike very nice tutorial! I will definitely try and practice it today ✨💖
Cool, have fun
Importan: the object you want to duplicate along, should be in the middle of the scene. otherwise you will get it wrong.
Hey mike
Im trying to make a pavement .... with MASH.... how to connect the nodes with merge nodes
Thanks Man
Very welcome
Thankyou 🤝

Great suggestion!
thank you sir
Can u do a tutorial of how to model a phone?
thanks Mike.....................
I was following the tutorial, but my mash object is translated above the curve everything else works fine, any fix for this?
thanks
can it be done on maya 2014? i dont see that mash tag feature
Mike your funny with Homer Simpson
Homer is cool :-)
4:53 Any explanation for the German flag poppin up? :-)
I wanted to say "this" but as I also speak German it came out with a huge German accent :-)
Where have you been all my life Mike?
Right here I suppose :-)
Greetings Mike,
whenever I tried to attach curves in the MASH network, my geometry doesn't follow the curve.. it offset somewhere in the space, why it's happening can you please guide me?
I've tried in Maya2020 even I tried multiple setups but yet again failed to do that.
Make sure you snap object to center, x key,

update. seems your measurements need to be in Cm, not Meters.
i am working on a Track Hoe, I'm trying to use this method but i do not get remotely the same results as you ,,, nothing follows the path at all
mashal thank you

Make sure the initial location of the cube is at 0,0,0 in world space and that you have done a "Freeze Transform" before you create your MASH network

To see if there are people out there that pay attention :-)
