Thanks for the tutorial. That's very helpful! Isn't there a way for a mash to automatically add as many chain links as needed, when I change the length of the curve?
love it! my maya seem to however add ease in and out to the steps, even tho I set my tangents to be linear in settings, did you have to tweak anything else to make sure it's linear and equally spaced?
Thank you so much for useful tutorial! I'm a beginer in 3D and one more thing is clear now:) Could you ask me please, what command did you apply to vertex at 12:30?
Glad you like it. It’s Chamfer, you can also use Bevel to do the same knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2020/ENU/Maya-Modeling/files/GUID-740487C2-0009-403A-9434-9F4C067ABC38-htm.html
8:11 - if you switch both the curve and entire mash network off and on, it should set the chain pattern correctly all the way down the curve without having to rotate the initial object
Thansk for the tuts ! For the issue with the chain not "updating" the rotation every 2nd pattern, I found out that (in Maya 2022), if you just uncheck the curve node et reactivate it right away, the replicator node under it gets applied. Toggling the activation of a specific mash node seems to update the node under it and apply it once you toggle on the node over it again.
Hi Jan, awesome tutorial! Thanks so much. However, I have a question. After creating my chain link and the MASH network, I can't find my original mesh in the viewport although I can still select it in the Outliner. I'm sure this is something simple I'm missing, but would you please help? I'm stuck at about the 12:08 mark and have no idea what you did to make the original mesh visible. Thank you!
Hi Andy, original mesh is automatically hidden when MASH is created. You can unhide it by selecting it in Outliner and pressing Shift+H or going to Display -> Show -> Show Selected (or All etc.)
Awesome. I have been looking for a way to make chain shoot out like in the movie Alita Grewishka. Is it possible? Or maybe move with your chained lizard? Like grow chain animation.
I'm just guessing, but growing should be possible by animating MASH parameters. As MASH is made for motion graphics that should be doable. Try to search for MASH animation in documentation. As for movement with lizard, in that case, the chain has to be simulated as a rigid body.
Hi Jan thanks for uploading this video, it helps! Unfortunately after setting the distance, the rings distorted, for example the vertices on both ends have a different level. Is it something wrong with the "ring" i created? thanks.
Hi, thanks for the tuorial :D. I am using a small rope mesh to replicate along the curve but when move the cvs, mesh doesn't follow as it is doing in video. Please help :(
hi, i found this tutorial very usefull, i´m trying to do a procedural rope, so i create a cylinder eliminate the caps make uvs and then use the mash options, but with the Mash method the end of the cylinder i´m use did not connect and merge with the start a of the next one as if i use for example the extrude method along a curve. There´s any option to do that? Thanks for the tutorial.
Hi Emilio, I'm pretty sure rope would be better to be made by Extrude Along Curve or possibly Curve Warp. MASH is made for instancing geometries so you would have to merge those vertices afterwards.
@@JanJinda thanks for the reply, yea extrude seems the better option but still got the problem of the uv, i would like to make them tileable so i don´t need to use a lot of my uv space only on a rope, gonna try the curve warp
Hey man can you please tell me a solution for this problem. After i make the desired necklace using MASH, the object is disabled in the outliner. And I can't select or click the mesh/necklace and the only thing i can select is the curve. The link i made can't be selected at all. What can I do ?
Hey, could be that you have some object disabled in selection masks. knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2020/ENU/Maya-Basics/files/GUID-E3DBC099-2E93-47F3-B7FA-A219DB72B4A7-htm.html
I found it easier to model the link as two pieces and then avoid the replicator node all together. This way you won't have to rotate the mesh to get it to conform to the curve. It does that out of the box when using the curve node.
I tried so often to work with MASH but it always give me strange behaviour. I gaved it a chance again, this time when I add a curve to the mash editor it (as followed in the tutorial) it will hide my mesh and nothing happens. If i turn my mesh on in the Outliner all Inputs from the Replicator doesnt effect the mesh anymore. I don't get it.
It can be caused by multiple issues. Pivot point on a wrong place, weird offsets in the replicator or so. Original mesh is not modified, that should stay hidden. New mesh is created by replicator, usually called *_ReproMesh.
I did everything you did in the tutorial but with a different object (A cylinder with a Helix around it. I combined it with Bolean->Union and merged all vertecies as well as freezed the object and deleted the history) but it doesnt work. It doesnt follow the curved. It makes a turn, but its not following the curve that I dragged into the Mash-thing (the display on the right). Very weird. I know that you probably cant help me with it from what I told you, I just wanted to vent my anger :(( Origianlly I wanted to make a long tube that has a Helix around it, but I dont know how else I should make this oh and, its not really working with other obejcts as well. Pretty weird Edit: So, I tried it with a Helix and it works as it should. I tried it with a Sphere and that doesn work
Thank you! Most in depth tutorial I've seen and not too long. Appreciate the explanations.
OMG. You just enlightened my life. I only know basics about MASH. Thanks for showing the True Power :)
Haha cheers
u r awesome man.... love from chennai-India😍

ofcourse subscribed bro
Thanks, very much appreciate it.
Jan! Your mash videos are the best over whole youtube, looking forward for more!!!
Haha. Thanks. One day!
This is Amazing Man, Great Tips ^^
Glad you liked it
amazing explanation MASH topic. Thx, you really helped me understand how it works!
Cool lesson! It's so fun and interesting!
Glad you think so!
Very Cool! Thanks!

maybe you can connect the attributes using Connection Editor
Thank you for the tutorial!
Do you have an idea as to why the instances might stop being affected by the pattern after some 200 instances?
Please, never delete this video. ♥
Haha there’s no plan to do that :)
Amazing tutorial. Really clear and well communicated.
Thanks buddy, nice and quick whilst still being very easy to follow. Perfect.
Glad it helped!
so cool, insane tutorial

that's strange, try to rebuild/normalize the curve first
finally i did it!
thanks for the video
Glad you liked it
Really helpful man and thanks for explaining what you doing too!!
Glad it was useful. I have more on mash coming soon, hopefully.
Super vec diky :-) konecne se v Maye zacina delat vse lepe
MASH je v Maye myslim od verze 2016
Good clear tutorial :3 thanks. Been struggling with a good way to animate a living chain character. This is it at last :D

This is so cool! Im tasked with creating cgi chains for my student film so this helps a ton, thank you!
Subbed and hit that bell icon ofcourse
Glad it helps!
Now how you would make it an interactive chain?
Not my field of expertise. That's about rigging and simulation.
Awesome video man
Thanks

Hi, thanks for the tuorial :D. I am using a small rope mesh to replicate along the curve but when move the cvs, mesh doesn't follow as it is doing in video. Please help :(
That's hard to say, could be because of wrong pivots or wrong modifiers order.

Yes, I have to move things in order to make it work.In the end, it kind of works :)

Is there a way to model a chain not using mash (asking for a school project)
you can use this old school method using snapshots ua-cam.com/video/4EjBu6ic10o/v-deo.html, not as versatile as mash though
@@JanJinda thanks man
No worries

I found it easier to model the link as two pieces and then avoid the replicator node all together. This way you won't have to rotate the mesh to get it to conform to the curve. It does that out of the box when using the curve node.
Does it bend those two according to the curve? I have to try that. However you won't get random 'noise' between those two I guess.
wow

dame it doesn't rotate for me after adding the curve
It's sometimes has a strange behaviour, try to freeze transforms first, change order of nodes etc. Or update Maya :D

Sorry for the late response; I missed your comment. It could be caused by a wrongly placed pivot.
Been going at it for days and it doesn't work at all
Something is wrong then.
its not following the curve even the offset is 0
Do you have frozen transforms and pivot placed in the right place?
It works with the new mesh but not with the mesh i want
@@JanJinda thanks for responding I think that mesh had some issues new one work fine
Strange, I’m glad you solved it though
