- WHAT ROD BEARING KNOCK SOUNDS LIKE
If you want to hear what rod bearing knock sounds like in this video we will demonstrate that. Rod bearing knock is very common to develop for higher mileage cars, cars that are driven hard, or cars that did not have regular oil changes. Once you hear a rod bearing knock safely stop your car before the engine seizes and not be able to turn it over. We demonstrated what rod bearing knock sounds like on this car that has only 90k miles but it did not have regular oil changes and as a result the engine developed rod bearing wear which lead to rod bearing knocking. Hopefully the video will be helpful and you will be able to fix your rod bearing knock on your car before the engine is completely seized.

Can you please tell me if this can also cause overheating ?
Because I have the same noise and my car is overheating after +- 30 minutes of driving.
The noise that I have disappears and reappears some times at idle. But when I accelerate the noise is almost always there. Any suggestion about that ?
Thank you in advance for your answer.

I had a 1978 courier pick up truck that started making that noise. I was able to drive it two years that way. I was even able to drive it to the junkyard at the end of the two years.

@@nylnyl. It is an involved but easy fix, in a pickup truck or rear wheel drive vehicle. In a front wheel drive car, it is a horrific disaster that will make you question if you should even bother fixing the engine. Plan on lowering the engine completely out of the car in many front wheel drive vehicles. I would just assume get rid of the engine in the front wheel drive and get another used or rebuilt engine. A pathetic four litre engine is not worth repairing that much.
That’s nuts actually
My 7.5L did this once I put deasil oil In it and hasn't had a problem since.

Hi Wonder if you can help I get a ticking/knock from my bmw e60d after 15 minutes after I start the car I have had the injectors taken out and checked and tested came back fine. Any help would be great
Sort of specific but…Can excessive connecting rod bearing damage cause an internal engine oil leak allowing oil through the piston o ring wetting the spark plug? Even without the knocking.
Yes, oily spark plugs are big sign you should put some oil treatment/additive, or change the o rings

Happened to my 48000 mile 118i. The local BMW agent told me it was the torque converter! Another local garage told me it was worn timing chain. He also claimed to be a BMW expert! Finally got my general local garage to look at it and they showed me the worn big end shell bearing and badly scored crank. Scrapped it.
he he he same here they told me its the torque converter, i changed it and the sounds is still there, now i am opening the engine to see the real cause...
I’m having the same issue, how much did they quote you to fix it? You scrapped the car?
My expert dealer mechanic claimed it wasn't breathing properly when it started making this sound during/after a failed test drive upon what should've been pickup. The bs is that I had to cut them a $3400 check to test drive my own car that the mechanic should've already tested thoroughly enough. Needless to say I took my check back against their will.
@@stolenhal0 cut a check for what of that amount?
I have a silverado that sounds like that or similar. Funny thing though it sounds like that when first started an only in park or neutral when revving. When it's in gear under a load no noise at all. Any ideas?
Your oil pump good? Tried a cleaning agent? Sounds like adding more pressure is forcing it through maybe clogged pickup tube? I’ve dropped many pans on silverados cause of this could just need cleaned, could need HV pump just some stuff to look into good luck 🤙
A little marvel Mystery oil should fix that rite up lmao
If you have a Hyundai and it is making this noise. In the US there is a extended warranty for this exact issue up to 120,000 miles or 10 years. Take it to a Hyundai dealership immediately
Sup guys, I want to find out. I've got a mk7 GTi. On idle there is no knock noise. When you hold the rev there is a ticking noise. Apparently it's cylinder one. The guy unplugged cylinder one coil pack while idling and held the accelerator pedal about 2k revs there is no noise. Does a bearing knock need detonation cause doesn't the crank still rotate without detonation??

Hi, I’m hearing exactly the same sound coming from my Hyundai Sonata 2011 engine. can the rod bearing be replaced?
how much does this cost to do? My 75k mileage GTI has the same noise. I had synthetic oil changes done every 5k miles....
I have this noise on 2016 328 bmw . I took it to a local shop they told me that this was the problem & they found fine metal in the oil caused by spun bearing. My grandad is coming up to my college to take it back to his shop & work on it. Hopefully it could be fixed w/o having to buy a new engine
Did you fix it? What did they replace? I also want to avoid replacing the engine...
My 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS had this but not as bad.. it may have been just a lifter.. i retimed it because i know the sleeves in the valve rod guides are steel and the valve rods are steel alloy.. theyll straighten out.. ill replace the head 40k miles later
Sound is at 2:47
Pretty much rebuilding the engine
I have a 2015 Hyundai Veloster that already had the motor blow up at 89k and fixed under warranty by the previous owner then on me at 122k. Local mechanic replaced the fuel pumps and a few sensors concluded I needed a new motor. Dealer mechanic replaced the injectors and 1/2 of dual catalytic converter. It failed the test drive before I paid and started making this noise. They said they'll try the second cat and if not new motor unless shavings in oil then new motor. The first tech I talked to there said they had a "forever warranty" for rod bearing where. Meanwhile both these mechanics have charged me $5000 to not fix a car with an original balance of $7,600 remaining (never been paid off).
that suxx but no unlimited warranty cause you can put sand in the engine

My 1988 Toyota Cressida has the same problem and today I pushed it on the highway then it made a different sound which means it became worse today. I thought it was a problem with my intake manifold because the sound seems to be coming out of it but I guess that’s because it’s a metal intake manifold.
Wtf r u saying lmao that was a terrible story and what is “worse today” ? Like dude what r u actually saying
Bro i drove my 3.5 altima with mild rod knock for over a year when I got it, I thought it was tons of different stuff till I redlined it a bunch than it ran really shitty and got way louder, few days later it started making that chirpy sound and it was done.

@@buhlebethu9547 yeah, I still can't believe I had it for over a year I guess low rpm driving lots of oil changed (3k miles or less) just kept it alive. Just wish people had more videos of what it sounds like before it "goes out" because almost all the videos are super noticeable and few show the "light knock" even mechanics I went to just acted like it was an exhaust leak funnily enough my dad told me I had a knock but I didn't believe him 😂

Did you find out what it was? We have same problem on 2003 Chevy Cavalier. The knocking sound starts ~ 40 mi/h, increases to maximum at ~55 mi/h, then goes a bit down.
Thanks. Very informative. So NO in NO WAY or FORM we should keep the engine spinning when we hear a knock. It can make our engine kaboom and may cause an accident. And it sounds terrifying too.
My 07 ford edge sounds like that what to do?
Well, I appreciate your videos, especially this one! I replaced the Flexplate, checked torque converter, fluid levels up, tightened balance shaft chain, replaced spark plugs and still happening!
When I had the oil pan removed to check the balance shaft, I did notice movement in one of the rods. Couldn’t check the others at the time but I think I’ve found my issue!
I refuse to drive it let alone starting it to see what the problem is because it sounds like a giant ass can is stuck to my wheel! I’m hoping that’s really it! Will know today!
Was that it? I'm chasing a similar sound. Replaced belt tensioner, 2 idler pulleys, rebuilt turbo, new timing chain and still no luck..
did you fix it ? or trashed it?
@@psychonautproductions1096 I determined that it was def rod knock but instead of paying tons to get that fixed and be without an vehicle, I went to the salvage yard and got an engine with 57,000 miles on it. Have had no issues since then. Swapped the engine out by myself in less than a day.

Ivan your accent is sick
I have 2005 volvo v50 t5, and I am not sure if a weird noise that came up from a coolant that popped could have caused a rod condition. The car was driving fine, then the hose popped, I had no clue. Vehicle was showing low oil, which I had just did an oil change. The car did not overheat, but it went into limp mode. I got the car to a parts store. the coolant hose was fixed, and resivour topped off. I still could not start the car til I cleared the codes. Codes were knock sensor, and crank position sensor. Once I cleared those, the started, and sounded just fine. I think the rattle noise was from the lifters. the car has 193k miles. I do not understand why a rattle noise happens when the car is in limp mode. I am thinking because the engine is given lesser fuel which makes it run weaker. but that is a theory.
I have the same noise in my nissan Note/versa e12 but the mechanic says its exhaust manifold broken or its gasket leaks, could be a bolt broken because of small accident i had, another thing is, when i put in reverse the noise goes off, it appears in drive mode and cold start. when the car is little warm noise gets lower but not go off,
any suggestions?
When I check for exhaust leaks, I remove the heat shields from my exhaust manifolds and the plastic inner fender wells from the vehicle. I unhook the suction hose from my shop vac and hook it to the exhaust end of the shop vac. I stick the hose in the vehicle exhaust pipe and wrap a t-shirt around it and a whole buch of duct tape, so no air gets by. Then I go under the vehicle and spray windex on all the joints on the exhaust pipe and the gaskets and all over the exhaust manifold to look for air bubbles to indicate a leak. I found a whole bunch of cracks all over my exhaust manifolds and ended up replacing them. You can also build your own smoke machine from here on youtube, for like $20.
Bruh finally someone doing it right just took to long to start the damn car 😂
My TDI sounds like that on startup but once I put it in gear or increase the rpm's to 1000 it goes away. Should I be concerned?
Exhaust leak
Yeah that's a very obvious knock 😬
Are rod bearings, spark plugs and timing the only things that can cause knocking?
No, wearing out the piston sleeve can also cause a knocking sound called piston slap. This is when the piston is 'slapping' against the wall of the cylinder

I thought the rod bearings were accessible right from the oil pan?
Yep, thats what my engine sounded like. Thank you. I just changed the bearings, and they didn't look real bad. But evidently they were.
If they were the original ones, they should be wore out - it's a 80s model yanmar diesel sailboat motor - with no tellin the hours on it.
That is definately what it sounded like, with a deisel twist. So that must have been the problem.
I had a yanmar L100 engine and the bottom end bearing went. esay fix
@@emmanuelhud1 Yeah, Im fixin to go rent a torque wrench to finish the job. It was easy. But my piston rod bearings didn't appear to be in bad shape at all? But that was definately the sound it made when I revved it up. And its a old motor, so it was likely the problem.
Do you know if it could be a main bearing? I have the main bearing replacements too. But everything feels good and tight, I don't feel any slack and the compression feels real strong.
Im wondering should I change them?, And how hard would it be.
1 is a 2 piece insert, the other 2 are 1 soilid circular piece.
@@aaronwalker8847 I from person experience with yanmar egines its your crank shaft(conrod) bearing like what you said you've replaced. I know case bearings can go, but I person don't think the noise is that. If the case bearings have no play and spin smoothly I personally would leave them. The tolerance on the conrod bearings are like 100ths of a millimetre so don't be surprised if it fixed the noise. I have done two yanmars which fixed this problem.

Howdy. I have a new-to-me 1998 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4, automatic, 3.3L VG33E 4th VIN digit "A" motor, made 10/1997. It has one or more bad piston wrist pins, and a confirmed bad crankshaft due to excessive bearing failures from oil loss. Does anyone know if the pistons in a 1996-2004 Pathfinders, QX4, Frontier, or Xterras can be removed and reinstalled through the bottom of the motor (oil pan), with the motor still installed? I also have a bad crank so I have to have it removed and machined too. The rest of the motor is clean, no oil burning, and low miles (165,000). I hate to swap it for an unknown possible problem motor if I can do it this way instead.

I have some sort of rod knock... it doesn’t sound as bad as that but... when I first start my car, it’s there not really loud but still there... and when it is warmed up and has been running for a bit it basically goes away
Might be your tappets / valve lifters need adjusting, or you have low oil. It goes away because the oil has circulated and lubricated the parts. If it goes away when warm then it's definitely not the same thing as rod knock
My car has the same problem I’ll hear a knock at idle but goes away while I’m driving.
If it goes away it’s not a rod knock. Your most likely running low on oil or need an oil change . Some light ticking is normal . Rod knocks get worst when you accelerate
low oil will cause your rod knock it need to burn oil treatment for pistons after every oil change
Piston slap or tappets/ followers/ valve springs if a higher lighter tick. If it almost goes away, piston slap, if it goes or is intermittent hydraulic lifter.

I’ve got the same issue in my 2002 Subaru Outback. From what I can gather, rod bearings wear over time and on a cold morning when all the moving components of your engine haven’t heated up to the proper size, there’s larger gaps which can cause some tapping/knocking. As long as it’s not super noisy like in this video and it goes away as your engine gets up to temp, you should be fine. Just keep up on maintenance!
Could be an exhaust leak too...
this happened to my Honda, turned out it was a tensioner for the timing belt. I changed the whole timing belt, and after that the sound went away
