  • In this video I'll show you what "lifter tap" sounds like. Lifter tap is a pretty common issue on vehicles that use hydraulic lifters. This video has great audio of lifter tap with a little commentary explaining "lifter tap".
    Note: This video is only to be used for the purpose of giving viewers an idea of what lifter tap sounds like. Just because your vehicle sounds this way does not necessarily mean that your lifters are the cause of this noise. All noises should be properly diagnosed before repairs are made. This video does not explain how to properly diagnose "lifter tap".

    You have NO idea how long it took me to find a video that had a clear sound of a lifter tap. I've been fortunate enough to keep all of my cars in perfect working order until recently when two of my cars got this noise. I suspected a lifter tap, as did a friend of mine, but I hadn't heard it before. Or, well, I might just not remember ever hearing it. Anyway, 10/10 for making a very precise video. I thank you for the content.

    if the sound is lifter tap you can try taking the revs to about 3000 and holding steady for a couple of minutes. This will often pump oil into the hydraulic lifters and stop the tap. If you mainly do short drives it's likely to come back, but if that works, at least you know its lifter tap and you can try a flush and then an additive for lifters. great job picking up the sound in this video!

    One thing you can do BEFORE you replace a lifter: My Xterra was doing this last year after I did my timing belt change so when it was time to change the oil, I poured half a bottle of Seafoam in the oil crankcase, drove it a hundred 55 miles one way, then another back home. Noticed the ticking went away and let it hot soak in the garage. Changed the old oil out then put in new. Almost a year later and it still hasn't come back. If this doesn't work for you, then I'd recommend changing the lifter and be sure to bleed them first.

      SEA FOAM is the snake oil that cures all for the automotive industry. People add that stuff in the engine and then watch smoke coming out from the exhaust thinking that stuff is cleaning the engine. In fact it's just burning itself and smoking while ruining catalytic converters. Of course many people who use that trash put it in older engines that's experiencing problems. When the cat converter goes shortly after they think well it's old age. You don't believe me? Go ahead and add SEA FOAM to a brand new car engine and watch smog coming out the tail pipe. Did it clean anything in a brand new car or is it just snake oil burning and contaminating the engine?

    Had what I believe was lifter tap on my old car, 94 grand am. It happened immediately after an oil change. The oil pressure light came on too, which was a bit frightening. Fixed it by simple giving the engine a very slight rev! No light, no noise.

      @@BlueRage Well, I filled the filter to the brim, and it never happened during any other oil change. Of course there's some oil in the engine that drains as you pull the filter, but I've never experienced a pressure light come on stay after idling for a little, combined with the tapping. Oil pressure typically builds almost instantly.
      In retrospect it probably would've corrected itself idling, but a quick, mild rev instantly did the trick.

    I thought the noise coming from my Boxer engine with almost 140,000 was a lifter tap - this confirms it. Thanks for the video. It only does it when cold. After one minute it goes away and does not come back. Does this mean the lifter is starting to go and as long as I don't push the engine for the first few minutes (which is a good thing in any case) it can go another 50,000 miles without problem? Most engines built after 1980 have hydraulic lifters or lash adjusters such as the Mitsubishi-Chrysler 3.0L seen here in this video. Sometimes they develop a lifter noise that is from lifter bore wear, lifter plunger bore wear, or dirty lifter bores. What you can do first before anything else, is put 1 liter of old style ATF Dexron Type III in the engine, run it at idle until it is warmed up -then drive the car around the block for 5 minutes. After this, shut the engine off, wait a few hours for it to cool down. Now start it up again and idle till warmed up, drive it around the block again for 5 minutes, and then promptly change the oil as normal. Sometimes the high detergency of the ATF can knock the contaminants loose in the lifter bores and free them up which gets rid of the lifter noise. As an alternative you could also just change your oil with penzoil platinum synthetic, it also has a high detergent content and may be able to free up stuck lifters over time (the service period). You could also do both. This may or may not work depending on what is actually wrong with your engine, but its cheap and worth a try. PLEASE NOTE: if you try the ATF method, DO NOT drive your vehicle under any heavy load while the ATF is in the engine, only a light, grandma style "easy does it" drive around the block. Its also worth mentioning there are other options such as seafoam engine oil flush.

      @@b-bitter91 Lol, certainly not. *You would need to use the correct amount of engine oil the vehicle calls for*, -but substitute 1L of said oil with 1L ATF. Hoping it helps. Its embarassing driving to work everyday with it so loud. I turn my music all the way up 😭It's giving me high blood pressure.

Now its not in stock anymore and its Not a car from the 2000’s or 2010’s , it’s from the mid 80’s and the car is worth fixing but parts getting harder on old cars. Cars from mid 90’s - now you can still get parts no problem. So I’m big time stresing right now

    Well I have a strange tick in the engine that I've tried describing to people . . . everyone seemed to unanimously agree it was Lifter Tick. No one seemed too concerned, but no one could really explain it to me either.
    Well this video proves it was not, in fact, Lifter tick.
    It's on the lower/back end (from the sounds of it) of a 2001 Ford Ranger with the 3.0 V6, and _to me,_ sounds more like a hollow (not Solid or Tinny) "Knock" or "Tap" that only happens at a cold start, is only audible at, or just above, idle (at speed it seems to disappear, literally around 1200-1500 RPM's it stops), and mostly goes away once the engine is warmed up, which seems even stranger to me.

    • @zackstaa7826
      @zackstaa7826 Місяць тому

      Sounds like piston slap. Very common on older high mileage engines. On all engines, eventually clearances inside the cylinder bore will wear away and become larger. When the engine is cold started, the clearances are at their biggest allowing the piston to move side to side “slapping” the cylinder bore. As the engine warms and expands, it seals the space between cylinder wall and piston and the noise goes away. It’s harmless, but if you want to fix it the only way is going to be an engine rebuild. Resleeve cylinder bore and new piston rings. If it’s not burning oil or lost compression I wouldn’t worry about it.

    • @WC3fanatic997
      @WC3fanatic997 Місяць тому

      @@zackstaa7826 Thank you for the response.
      No, it actually burns a negligible amount of oil (as in, nothing noticeable between oil changes so far) and the compression is actually astonishingly good for how old this engine is; this thing can push itself uphill at idle, and it never seems to lack for power which is bizarre for a 3.0 Vulcan.
      All this combined with the sound not getting any worse (and it almost seems to have gotten less prominent over time, even considering it wasn't terribly loud to begin with), so I'm not too worried, though opinions seem to differ between two vastly different camps on whether Piston slap is "Harmless" or "Literally the end of an engine".

Took it off and no push rod or rocker arm wear, torque was perfect. Compression is perfect and manifold pressure was a beautiful steady 25inches. Couldn't look at the lifter since I have to pull the head but no visible slapping.
    Is it safe to say my lifter is bad?

    My 18 year old Volvo is starting to develop a lifter tap on cold start when the engine has been sitting for a few days. Takes only a few seconds for it to fade away as the lifters get oil pressure up to them but it sucks because it will only get worse. Atleast the engine is dead quiet after a few minutes ofd running.
    The car only has 150k miles which is nothing for a Volvo but what ruined the lifters so early is neglect.
    I know for a fact that the car lived on 0w30 at 18k mile intervals because thats the manufacturers recommendation.
    Just sad to know that this 5 cylinder engine had to suffer trough that. Volvos 5 cylinder engine needs 5w40 at 7000-8000 mile change intervals.
    Dont ever put 0w30 or 5w30 in an old Volvo unless you live in the arctic circle where even 5w40 becomes honey in the severe cold.
    Neglecting oil changes and using a very low viscosity oil ruins the lifters first.
