      For the Question: Well, depends on the "Culture" of that Village. It is not so long ago, that you got shot at for rejecting an invitation to a Drink in some First World Parts of the World. Every Part of the World has ist own "strange" Rituals and social Norms.
      So, it may be "logical" for the Game to contain "illogical Parts".
      But, it also depends if the GM goes on with this Murder-Hobo-Style or does it do to enrich the flavour of his Game and how succesful he is with it.
      I, for example, was expelled from a Game after killing an essential NPC who had picked for Weeks on me, had shot me in the Leg twice before a Mission, slandred my Name what I could prove untrue later (due to my efford, not the GMs or anyone elses) and such "friendly Things" just for me beeing an Orc. Ok, there is racism, and that NPC was a Racist of the pure kind. But, he did not act on other Orcs or Metahuman NPC that Way. So, as he tried to shoot me again, I just plain and simple walked away from the Group that did not stood up for my Char at all - again, not uncommon in that Game, but after doing some Jobs and me eating more than one Bullet for them and proving to be loyal and reliable, I expect this - at least, my Char who followed the Code of Hagakure was (everybody knew it).
      So, basically, after that "betrayal", I went out, got my big Guns and cleared the Place including the NPCs out. My Group were helping him - and thus I just leveled them with the whole Building as well.
      Then, the GM closed his Notes and informed me, that I "never was welcome again on their Tables for beeing an Powergaming Murderhobo". Seemingly, everyone agreed and thought it was normal to act that way.
      I might add that My Char was the least Minmaxed with only his Armor and Constitution beeing in the upper Values - still, far away from what is possible (I sported an Armor of 28 while 54 is kinda the Max you can get regulary and 40 the highest value you can sport as a new Char in that Game (SR5). The Mage on the other hand sported a 120 Damage Fireball (while the Max is, depending on your Rolls, around 35 to 40 for a Fully Maxxed Archmage who can easily compete with Ancient Dragons regarding Magic.
      I know how to Minmax and legally Powergame, as I use that Chars as NPCs for Bossfights when GMing myself - but, as Player, I tend to keep it reasonable.
      So, there are a lot of Horrorgroups out there, but there are ten Times more good Ones out there, too. If you are in a Horrorgroup or just unhappy and your Group ignores your wishes or entirely shun them - find another Group. If your expectations and Playstyles do not match, it is annoying for everyone.
      I, for myself, was happy tpo oblige to "never coming back" to their Game. Also, I found many others that were happy to find another reasonable Player and also I had often Problems kinda the one mentioned - but, it was easy to talk this out and find a common Ground.
      The only other negative Thing was a Group where the Players did not retaliate regardless what the GM did to them because of "you do not randomly kill NPCs". Problem was, the GM needed them to do so for the Story. So, he asked me to come by and "help out". Was awkward but fun.
      Also, I wanna put out that Shadowrun is a Game where "betraying your Team" is part of the Game. You may agree to leave it out, but that is not the Norm.

    Forever DM's of the world: seek out other forever DM's and make your own group of forever DM's, with a rotating schedule of people who run. This story was great, and very heartwarming.
    That question at the end, I have an addendum:
    The original intention of handshakes was to make sure they weren’t hiding a concealed and instantly accessible weapon. If that is his intent of a handshake, and he his a shopkeeper in a medieval setting, then it makes sense, since you could be a brigand.
    That falls apart when we are dealing with a game, and we have to have some suspension of disbelief, else it’s not going to be fun.
    TL:DR, in real life, maybe; in a game, no.

    • @onijester56
      @onijester56 3 роки тому +8

      It also falls apart since this is a game where most adventuring characters (whether PC or NPC) have some level of magic or combat ability that can be employed with 'empty' hands. Any spell lacking a Material component can be performed before or after the handshake, "instantly accessible" by its definition.
      Shocking Grasp, Inflict Wounds, Burning Hands, Thunderclap...a creative player could even get mileage out of Chaos Bolt, Firebolt, Chill Touch, or Bonfire. And the shopkeep wouldn't be able to prevent any of these even if all characters shook his hand.

    • @Greil9
      @Greil9 3 роки тому +4

      Also even if they thought the other party not shaking may be a sign of concealed weapons, immediately trying to put a knife at their throat is a huge overreaction. I'd maybe see keeping a closer eye or suspicion, but not instantly going to threats of violence. Also if the guard come in at that point, the shopkeeper won't have a leg to stand on if he started the hostilities.

    • @markcameron5513
      @markcameron5513 3 роки тому +11

      @@Greil9 I actually argue the opposite. This may be a cultural thing on top of the idea behind checking for weapons. To not shake his hand you may be insulting his existence or his ancestors or saying he isn't worthy of a greeting, so he must respond in kind by proving he is, in fact, worthy or those things or that his ancestors are worthy of said respect.
      As for the spells previous commenter mentioned: the DM may have homebrewed the idea that spells are not able to be used in this town or even on this shopkeep. Maybe they still are, we don't know, but we don't know the entire scenario as it is. There's a lot of leeway and opening here. Not every society would react the same way to everything.
      Did you know, crossing your legs in some cultures is tantamount to insulting the person next to you by saying that they are not more than the dirt you walk on? Do that to the wrong person and they might end you. In many countries it is still common enough that a citizen attacking or even killing a foreigner may not be looked at too hard, as they are there to protect their people, not necessarily everyone.

It is theorized, or maybe proven I am no historian, that hand shaking was meant to dislodge any hidden weapons. So, maybe he is doing that as a trust thing to check for weapons and the refusal is viewed as almost an admission that you have a hidden weapon (although this is somewhat null as the adventurer's are likely openly carrying far more dangerous weapons).

    Glad to see a positive story. Aside from just the welcome change in vibe, I feel like there is far more variety in the positive tales. The DnD horror stories-while always entertaining-can get repetitive on a binge because there are really only a few different ways that players and DMs commonly go bad (murderhoboing, railroading, perverting, etc), while there is no limit in the variety of ways players and DMs can turn a campaign into something special.

Honestly, some of these stories have moved me to the verge of tears- and I have learned a LOT which is really helping (my admittedly novice self) become a much better DM.

    I'm a new DM and I'm doing (Prologues) for my players including our forever DM. The prologues being played first (rather short) but it helps their connection to their characters become stronger. I've even sprinkled some foreshadowing about their future (BBEG) in one of my player's prologue. I still have lots to learn but I'm definitely dedicated to story building and creating a fun experience for my players. The DM that is a player in my campaign runs a campaign we've been playing (myself as a player) for about a year (almost 2) we're level 19.

    It’s always good to hear these stories that are more wholesome, after realizing I was in a horror story as a player and hearing various videos on your channel to get my mind off it. I had tried to be that new dm for my own dm (the one who is the source of my horror story) because he was always ranting and raving about all the awful experiences he’s had as a player (dms who pull out op stuff that can kill a character true Polymorphed into an ancient gold dragon in a single round, and those that sexually harrass his character when he plays women) and of all the many, MANY games he’s ran that ended up collapsing (which, looking at it all now, I can see fault in the players still, but the dm was by no means innocent as he proclaimed). I wanted to give him a good experience as a player in my first ever game of 5e I am still running to this day (thoufh with breaks these last few weeks between me getting sick with covid and losing my voice, thankfully playing online, and now ith Holidays). The module is Icewind Dale. I had 6 players join. The other dm had decided to make a Paladin that we realized could have easily been an npc from Out of the Abyss based on the backstory he made, which made him a ptsd stricken asshole. With how the group was set, I’d expected the campaign to be dark and suspenseful, which would make the dm’s paladin fit in well. But, over the course of the 5 or 6 sessions he was a player, the others began to open up more with eachother and the game became far more light hearted than I expected, and I began to play into that while still trying to give DM ways to open up and maybe let loose. But he was rigid and refused to join some sillier rp moments like the infamous Snow Ball Fight (which was absolutely the trigger for the fun our group is having now!). That snow ball fight is also what made dm drop out of the game and leave the discord without a word to anyone. Only to use his paladin as a lich in the game he runs to try and kill us player (he had a general that ended up using an op item to one shot murder my cleric I was playing, the same session he had me change to an archetype and lose my “Tanking” abilities). We lost one other player, a more light hearted paladin, due to scheduling conflict, but he still occasionally checks in with the group if he can.
    I am happy that OP was able to deal with his situation and fight through the depression with support of friends and his newbie dm though! Thank you again for covering this story!!!

    This video genuinely moved me to tears. I’ve been going through nearly three year depressive episode that other than the marital issues (as I am single) greatly mirrored OPs with other personal things that were causing stress. I was at a point where I was in such a terrible work situation that it affected all other aspects of my life. I couldn’t derive joy from anything and would literally wake up, go to work, get home late after overworking myself (we were greatly understaffed and dealing with a toxic coworker), then get in bed and do nothing. I was irritable, exhausted and burnt out. Almost all my conversation both in and out of work were ranting about how terrible the coworker was. I was having panic attacks about leaving my apartment, so I was either spending all my money on having food delivered or not eating. I am still in the long process of getting out of that depression, as op said it doesn’t happen over night, but I no longer have that job, I have moved back closer to my family and am trying to learn to interact with people again. I have a therapist that I actually like and trust. I have a dog that I love and she helps me engage with the world again and gives me purpose and I am slowly starting to enjoy my hobbies again. I still struggle with the depression and anxiety a great deal and most days it’s still hard to get out of bed, but this video seriously gives me hope for the future.

  • @dmdave2512

    OMG I feel this so much. I've been DMing the same campaign for over a year now and finally just broke down and told the group if ANY of them had a campaign idea they wanted to try we could pause our current campaign for a while and I'd take a break and play for once...because, well I'm tired(as with the video life problems aren't helping that). No volunteers as of yet. They looked at me like my head was on fire. The one that had talked about doing it back when I started the group just stammered and froze. Evidently he'd given up on the idea at some point. Another one said, but...your stories are too good. I can't do that...despite my assurances that it comes with a little practice. The new player that came recently and has 5 minutes of dnd experience tried to step up at least and said half heartedly she would try to run my campaign for a night before quickly changing the subject. Guess I'm still the DM. I had set it up as an open world ongoing campaign but I'm tempted to just throw in a big bad and wrap it when they kill him...or he kills them, also tempting.

    I actually clapped after finishing the story. Having gone through depression myself in the past, I know how that feels. Your brain just doesn't work right. Sometimes I would get deeply sad out of *LITERALLY*(and I do mean literally) nothing, other times I would be numb to feeling anything at all. Think of it like if you suddenly lose control of your limbs, as in they start moving on their own or stop moving at all. It's that, but with your brain. It's terrifying.
    Each one finds their own way to fight back. Mine was to rationalize it. If I couldn't control how I felt, then I would act on logic. I understood it was basically like having a wound. You gotta power through the pain and treat it. Seek help from others if you need. And know that it will get better. Depression is a kind of wound that hardly ever fully goes away, but if you understand what it is and how it works, you can manage it, even if it takes time.
    D&D can definitely help, as does anything that you are passionate about. Finding joy again in things you like is the first signal that you're overcoming it o/

    Years old video, so my comment on the post is gonna be missed, but here's what I think, approaching this story logically...
    1. No point for the original poster to bother mentioning the first DM he didn't care for. The story goes right into the second DM in the same paragraph.
    2. Choose not to kill teammates for power. Chooses to kill teammate for power anyway.
    3. Poster calls his patron treacherous... yet it was the warlock who betrayed their literal pact.
    4. Poster attempts to end with "slay those demons and get your soul back" as if it's a heartening moment. But the demon has the soul in the first place because the character *sold* it. For power. It's not like he took it from someone who wanted it at the time.

    I started playing in 1985. I quickly became one of the DMs in our homebrew world. Jump ahead to 1990 and began to create my own homebrewed world and we still play in it to this day.
    One more time jump to 2000. I was the only GM running D&D (AD&D2e) and another guy was running a DC Heroes game that went back to 1988. My family was moving to St. Louis and the Heroes GM was getting divorced (his wife was a player, too) so what had been an absolutely epic game ended on a very lackluster note.
    We moved back from St. Louis almost exactly a year later, and I have been the GM for D&D 3.0, 3.5, and Pathfinder 1e (we're sticking with that and will die playing it, I'm sure). I have said all of this because, with a tiny handful of exceptions, I've been the Perma-GM for 22 years and I'm tired. NO ONE will take on the role of the clown car's driver and I am just empty, so I know what the OP felt like. When his buddy stepped into give him a break they played one of the most epic storylines I've ever seen. I loved every bit of it and by the end I had something in my eye..
    I doubt I get a chance to be a player ever anymore and I'm about to put our whole campaign on hiatus because when I go to the creativity well the bucket comes up empty. But at least I can enjoy the cringiest things I've ever heard of thanks to your channel and I love it so bad. Thanks for your hard work!
