I'd personally already say "no" to ten personalities, especially for a player who's never RP'd with a group in this manner before. Even if they are super-amazing at maintaining it, the sheer information amount needed for the character is absurd. As in, if the personalities have different hobbies, areas of interest, etc. (or in other words, are more than stereotypes), it'd mean maintaining ten different character stories, world info, and whatnot.
Heck, I'd even suggest "no" to a complex character with 50 NPC backstories in general for first-timers for sheer amount of info needed to maintain.

The second red flag is the quite obvious main-character-syndrome with the Mary Sue character sheet and the expectation that each and every character player controlled or NPC has to follow their every whim, there's not much one can do about it, but talk out of game to reinforce the idea that it's supposed to be cooperative story telling and kick them from the game if they're not willing to adapt.
The final nail in the coffin are the lore changes they made without consulting the GM first. Many GM's will gladly help you flesh out your backstory, but it's just offensive towards the GM to make up plot points without their knowledge or consent.
I understand that it can be difficult to go from having full creative control as an author to get in this cooperative mindset, especially if it comes from a place of sheltered fanfiction writing, that is mainly written to fulfill the authors fantasies and desires.

It becomes especially obvious when you remember that Roger "gave her pointers" before session 0 and she still ended up with a completely broken and unreasonable character.

Being an author requires some humility. You are smaller than what you create. You are unimportant, people will appreciate your work not you. So no, this kind of bullshit shouldn't be a writers identification ticket. Yes, some became the face of a genre, like King, Poe, Marquez, etc. But still, we read their work.
As a novice author I think the biggest difference between writing and playing D&D is that when you are doing your own business in art, it's your business. People can suggest things, but at the end, you are the author. You do what your little heart desires.
But in TTRPGs, you have a group, a DM, a lot of other folk. They have their own ideas and goals. Creative vision doesn't narrows down to one person.
But there are some benefits of being an author. As a DM, you can make kickass hooks, understands the proper working of a good story better. As a player, you can make your characters beefy and full of life (and butcher it in an istance if you have my acting skills :DDDD). You just have to learn how to implement these things into a game.
So yeah, fellow writers and whatnot: please learn to cooperate. Let's show the world that not all of us have our heads so deep inside our asses, that we can implode at any time.

Being a YA published author's not really the achievement this person seems to think it is, especially with just how wide that genre is, with most of it being mid level. I've read oneshot fanfics that flowed better and were more entertaining than a good number of YA books. Also being a good storyteller doesn't necessarily make you a great roleplayer, because one is you writing out the whole plot on your own with help from editors or beta readers and the other is almost purely collaborative. If you don't wanna be reasonably flexible or letting other people's talents shine, you're better off not doing it.

    Good material, I recommand.

I do RP. I'm not a published author, but I've tried my hand at it a few times.
When writing stuff for a group setting you're not writing the main plot. You're writing part of a plot/adventure. It won't always be part of the main thread, but honestly... trying to force the story down a set path will lead to people feeling left out or what have you. You're not writing everything because people are there with you, people that want to add to the world you're all crafting together.
When writing a story as an author would. You're pretty much writing everything. Everything is about your character's and storyline since the only people interacting with the world you've created in that scenario is you.

Oh god, "Main Character Syndrome" can be so hard to talk someone down from. I had to play with someone like that for a few months. Refused to follow the group, but still inserted themselves into every scene, "from somewhere in the trees, so you can't find them". Disliked that they couldn't be a hugely successful and overpowered character at level 3, "my stats should be way higher than that, given my backstory". And made odd choices in battle and role play that the rest of the party questioned, and then got angry when the GM didn't understand what they were attempting to do while refusing to explain themselves, and occasionally rolling badly, "you're being unfair, that should have totally worked. You don't know how to run the game". They write a lot of fanfiction, so the hardest part for them was having to share the world and the narrative with other people. They don't control everything, and they hated it.

A huge red flag was that she treated DiD (im assuming at least, since they only said "a multiple personality disorder" and DiD is the one i know best so thats what im going with) like it was a "one side of me is a blunt, edgy antihero and the other side of me is a fabulous qween thats all about #flowerpower". Although, the seperate person thing is true, i would reference another systemate by their name, pronouns, etc not as myself.

Singulars/non-plurals can have different sides to them, but it's not the same as different headmates in a plural system yeah
And yeah names, pronouns, and personhood should always be respected for every member of a system

It almost certainly comes down to overcompensating for a severe lack of self-confidence. I imagine this girl did not have too many friends growing up but coped with that by hoping that someday she would become a renowned author (since reading YA books was likely an escape from her reality.) Since this is what she has latched on to give her a sense of self-worth, any perceived slight against her creativity will result in these unpleasant incidents. I've seen this with people before. They place their worth in their art/writing/music, so any criticism of it becomes a personal attack upon them because their identity is so integrally linked with their products. Unfortunately, these people may get some limited success (because they do invest a lot of energy and time into their work as can be seen by Mary's detailed backstory documents) but they will never reach the level they have aspired to specifically because they can't handle criticism and so find it much harder to improve their skills.

Plus, it's vampires in trenchcoats and shades and secret underground wars, like Underworld and the Matrix got in a threesome with Supernatural and now they can't tell who's kid it is. It's basically like playing the world's edgiest fanfic

Okay so, I do have a character for D&D 5e that has ten personalities kinda, BUT I went to lengths to make it clear that it wasn't a mental disorder or anything that would play into pseudoscience (the character didn't have multiple personalities, but was possessed by ten fiends of unknown origin at the same time ever since a ritual gone bad), and they DEFINITELY didn't all have "separate social ties" or whatnot. They were done so that the DM could use them and their unknown origin as part of a grander plot, and to work with my class choice (bard/Echo Knight multiclass) to explain why she's such a jack of all trades in that way bards are. There also wasn't a whole lot of not knowing which ones were trustworthy because they acted more like familiars than equal personas, and were completely under control and loyal to her.

So as an avid reader of various different levels of fiction ranging from novels designed for pre-teen audiences, to YA, and adult fiction; I will say YA literature has reached a stagnant point. Too many authors shove points like sexuality, mental health, and gender identity into their novels. While this can be an interesting aspect of a character, it suffers when the author attempts to force story significance on those subjects. ex: if character A in a transgender, the author will highlight that multiple times despite the fact it has nothing to do with the arcane device about to blow up the galaxy cause some evil villain hates life so much because they killed his puppy or something (though honestly if a galaxy killed my puppy I'd hate the galaxy as well). My point being too often "authors" like to make these aspects of a character a centralized theme of their story, but then write a story in which it poorly applies those themes, or a story where those themes don't interact as a part of the plot or sub-plot. This causes the character's highlighted aspect to feel intrusive; when a chapter is devoted to exploring that part of them the reader is often filled with the thoughts of that monty python scene of everyone saying "Get On With It" which makes the character less likeable because they aren't pushing the story forward, they are exploring something that doesn't interact with the plot.
Sorry for the wall of text, this is just a pattern I notice in a lot of new YA books that seemed relevant to the story. If anything I said doesn't make sense I apologize.

*LARGE SCALE DOESNT MAKE A GOOD STORY!*
Thats something ive noticed a lot of a YA writters fail at. Zaving the world sounds cool, but stakes and story are personal, theres a reason books like All quite on the Western Front, Lord of the Flies, Swiss Family Robinson and Don Quijote are such good books, their personal stories. Yes, theres a deeper theme in them, but theres still a very personal and very engaging drama. The end of the Universe doesny require personal drama, because at thar scale theres NO ONE that would have persobal stakes greater than saving the universe.

Some are. I had a storyteller (Yes, another WW game!) who was an "author" (probably like Mary was) who not only made a DMPC but pretty much railroaded the players. She'd sulk for days and have the NPCs turn on any character whose players pushed back with the "UM, no. My character wouldl not react that way to X NPC/ walk over and do that/ fulfill your creepy little fantasy)." Yeah. Dropped that game pretty quick. Have had GMs who were publishsed authors who were great because they understood they weren't writing a novel with the PCs as their characters.

My character died heroically going out in a blaze of glory closing the arc but the reality kicked in. The story continued without my character. I didn't have the heart to build a new one so I retired from this game and realized that we are all main characters and the story will continue and not end with you.
