Hey Folks,
Over the past month, I have been using this - the Asrock Challenger RX 5700XT - and it’s been a journey of ups and downs.
If you are familiar with the channel then you will know that prior to this, my main GPU of choice was Vega 64 - It’s really come into its stride lately comfortably pulling ahead of my GTX 1080 in terms of performance while offering up a great featureset software side which has made the experience both tweakable and reliable.
So it was only natural that the RX 5700 Range tickles my fancy a little on release and ill give navi its dues first and foremost.. A 25% - 30% performance bump on a GPU half the size is nothing to be snuffed at.
But this video is not about the raw FPS numbers, no today I wanted to talk about the Challenger. It’s a card which isn’t really grabbing the headlines the way that Sapphires pulse has nor has it been in the news in a bad way like some of the navi cards… no instead… it just seems to exist… and now has even been overshadowed by ASrocks own Taichi models..
So.. Can it cut the mustard? And how do we tweak it for optimum performance?

Thank you! Finally I could watch a review of the Asrock Challenger. This one seems to be quite... under-reviewed. :)
Yeah it was a risky purchase but I guess someone has to take the plunge. Not perfect, but with the latest drivers the whole experience is night and day from launch.
For the GPU being not much bigger than the RX 480 the level of performance is really impressive!
@@F7GOS I just have to convince myself that it might be the best to wait several more months until more driver bugs are fixed. :D
About your video: you also talked about your Sapphire Vega 64 quite often, so I expected a physical (size, power consumption) and benchmark comparison between the two. Maybe in a follow-up video? ;)
Because it's crap
DeeWox runs like a dream so I’d like to know what you mean
This video is very well edited for someone who doesn't have too many subs. Keep it up! Very good video!
Thanks for the comment 😊
This card is so underrated coz of its look. I would have taken this one if I didn't buy a wc ref one ;) Good vid!
keep up the good work ...my fave channel ......especially for the old hardware
I picked this up for 367 after taxes. You honestly can’t beat it. Just to bad I had to RMA it due to a grinding fan bearing and unresponsive fans. :( but the card ran like a bat out of hell. Can’t wait to get her back
Same problem here, will have to RMA mine too. Probably a project problem, as you and I aren't the only ones with the same issue. Shame, as it's a good GPU for the price, however I'm thinking about getting a Rtx 2070 super. It's a bit overpriced now, but got a good discount for a gygabyte model, and the temps are insanely colder than the Challenger.
Got one for 100
Bought it 1-2 months ago and it works great. Temperature is around 55 degrees while not doing anything, ramps up to ~70 degrees while GPU is working at 100% with fans running at 60-65%. It's a bit noisy but I don't mind since temperature is fine. It's fascinating how fast it cools off and how it can keep same temperature for hours while playing 2020 games on ultra. Only problem I had with it(i guess) is that it had trouble with 2nd monitor. I don't know if it's because I had one 144hz and other 60hz but 60hz one kept losing signal and after going green 2 times it crashed my pc. After removing 2nd monitor, everything is working great.
Given that it hits 80c on GPU temp it seems it's thermal throttling since the Junction temp must be hitting 110c. My blower design hits 77c GPU and hits 110c junction and throttles.
Just bought it thank you 😊
Do you have anny trouble with the card? Temperature or something like that? I want to buy it next week...
Underrated Channel
Underrated movie series too 😉
I've not watched it all yet but I do have the same Vega 64 card & completely agree right now it's ruining better than it ever has.
Does this card have 0 RPM?
Couldn't find it on Asrock's site.
Also awesome to see this card without the heatsink, couldn't find any pictures on the internet.
Propper VRM & GDDR6 heatsink is great to see, looks like the Sapphire's 5700XT Pulse.
It does have a 0 rpm mode as standard. With the smaller heatsink though it will get quite warm without airflow
it does. I dont use it because it doesnt kick in until 75'c and the fans start up super loud
VRM and MEM temps are high with this card. Over spec even for the RAM.
Just picked this up for 328 gbp 😊
This card is a toaster. Undervolted to 1.0 V @1800 mHz and reduced power and still getting 95C or more in some scenarios. Better to just spend another $40 on AIO
maybe there is something wrong with the one u bought
Same 95°
99C in stock with full speed fan. When set a power limit- 30º gets between 85-90C. Asrock shit.
Shit card same brooo
Still waiting for an update on the Nitro+ with high-end thermal paste.
Good one 380 us in our country for 5700
Whats the fan curve look like? What do you recommend?
If you are 100% sure that Changing the thermal Paste make no sense? I got the challanger 5700 non XT and i want to do this because i Need better temps.
I love this card. I've had it for a couple months on my first self built computer. However, I thinik temps are a bit too high. Do you know if there's a chance to adapt watercooling to this card? That'd be a dream! I've seen the NZXT case to adapt. IDK if that one would fit here. If so, I'll go for it!
I changed the thermal paste with thermal grizzly saw a 10 degrees drop.
@@Bossman5000 did you only reapply the thermal paste or also placed new thermal pads? i've heard that helps too. I got the non XT version flashed into one. Have underclocked it a bit already, but sometimes it hits 95 c + and its quiet hot in my opinion.
@@frederikhermans3684 undervolt it and and oc your cpu.that will help lower temps, maybe turn fans up, flashing to xt version not gonna cool as good
Hello, you would not have the profile with the undervolting made for the amd adrenaline 2020, since the video software is old
Please, how to UV OC non XT version of Challenger D? Thanks!
I have this gpu and it’s running really hot. Do you think I just got a bad one?
Thinking of getting the non XT version and undervolt it to 1.1v, you think it will run quite then?
I got this on a 50 dollar discount so I could care less about how it looks
I know this is a late comment but my psu had only two cables each had 6 pins.. I plugged them into the gpu leaving 2 pins free on each slot.. and it's working just fine. Anything to be worried about?
Hello, do you have the profiles that you made from the undervolt of the asrock board to pass, I have the same board and I don't know how to configure it
Idk mine dropped 10c when I did kryonot and the thermal grizzly pad for the v ram
can you update this with the current adrenaline software please?
would be nice, did you find something?
Are you able to tell us what are the vrms used?
Hi, do you know if it is compatible with the nzxt g12 cooler?
My rx 580 constantly drops clock speed and usage is all over the place
Worth having s tweak in wattman maybe
@@F7GOS Is it normal that your Wattman settings resets to the default after booting up your pc every time?
I have this same card and my "hot spot" (i assume tj max) is almost constantly pegged at 110, is it possible i could have bad mounting pressure?
mine gets to 105. did you fix it/ how did you fix it? please respond :)
@@hermanosponce9996 Same here. Set power limit -30º, gets 85-90C.
@@iankysilva5912 does it get less performance like that though?
Hey man, I saw your video about the asrock 5700 xt challenger and decided not to refund it after having some heat problems but they still occur after installing all drivers and new vBios do you have any idea what to do to make the challenger a bit cooler while ingame? It jumps to 100% when ingame and goes up to 80 degrees and has about 90-100 degrees around it which could damage my cables/tempered glass if it goes up even more sometimes. Do you have an idea what I could do?
Have you tried undervolting it and setting a more aggressive fan profile?
F7GOS thats the thing i dont know how i tried the asrock tweak utility thats useless and when i tries through the new amd tweak software it doesnt rly change anything tried the 1975 and 1050 like u did, right now i just use the auto undervolt from amd but thats still pretty hot not much changed how should I undervolt it and make fans more agressive?
hello!i just bought asrock 5700xt 8 gb....need to ask somethink.i have rm650x psu.i dont know if its ok...need 2 cables from psu to gpu or one cable from psu to double exits at gpu?...i am using one cable from psu to 2 cables at gpu....its wrong?
not at all, in fact its recommended to use that way for hungry power gpus.
Subbed for the Scottish accent lol
Hello, is it normal that my Asrock Challenger RX 5700 XT idles at 55 degrees celsius and will sometimes hit temps of 110 degrees celsius? At idle my vram is stuck at 1750mhz and my gpu clocks around 875mhz and my power consumption is at 40w while idle. Should I worry about these temps?
Your fans will be off at idle... You can chabge that option so they spin slowly in the Radeon software. Personally I hate the zero rpm options as a low fan speed is as quiet ..
If you're running more than one monitor, your ram will be stuck at 1750mhz. Also if you're running a 144hz monitor, you'll also have to select CVT reduced blanking in the custom resolution settings. My setup is doing the exact same as yours. I've got my gpu temps down to 67c, yet I still see hot spot temps of up to 105c. Wishing I would've just spent the extra and gone with a Sapphire brand 5700xt card or a 2070 Super.
I have exacly same card, and I do have a lot of issues with it;/ Any underclock or undervolt ends in crash while gaming;/
Just out of curiosity which power supply are you using and is it two separate 8 pins or one cable that splits in two?
@@F7GOS I'm having the same issue and my power supply only has one pcie power cable with two 8 pins. So is my card drawing too much amperage over one cable?
It's always better to use two separate 8 pins rather than a piggy back. Try lowering your target clock speed and setting power target to -10% see if the issue persists.
If it does you can slowly start working your way back up to drawing more power.
@@F7GOS Actually in last few weeks my card works excellent no crashers or turned off monitors. Its RM750x Corsair Modular with 2 x 8 pins. I know its too much, but i got it upgraded for free
@@F7GOS Thanks for the advice. I'm also seeing high junction temps and may try removing the cooler and redoing the paste with the mx4 that I have.
Can someone tell me how to undervolt :(?
In Radeon Software -> performance -> tuning -> enable GPU tuning -> enable advanced control -> fine tuning controls
and just set the maximum voltage and frequency lower
@@TheJupiteL You will explode if you max the volt
what software is he using to under volt and set boost clock?
That's just your standard Radeon settings ..
Why is this card dual 8 pin pcie 😭
My Challenger sucks. The fans click horribly anytime the fans ramp up and I have no idea why :(
My Challenger used to do the same. The clicking cause was a circular protective film on the center of the fans (similar to the one that protects the painting on the backplate). After peeling the film the clicking sound was gone.
Temps are the same at Challenger non XT ?
Would imaging the non XT is a little cooler as it has a reduced power target at stock
Mem temp 104°c on this in gpu-z is that normal
exactly, its normal for Mem gpu, even more
What’s the safest temp for this ?
Safest highest*^
Anything under 85°
are the drivers still fucked up ?
They are so much better than they were at launch. Not quite to the level that Vega is at but everything seems to work now at least
I got this for $50 under reference, good card for the price
@Knoxs it was 350, I said I got it for 50$ under reference. Sorry if I was unclear.
Ian Ault ah I see you got it on the Newegg sale as well
@@perhaps9567 yup
But... can I undervolt myself? ( ͡◉ ͜ʖ ͡◉)
Avoid this card, even tho u undervolt it runs 80c on load... trash card
i like your accent no homo
Throw away your 5700XT. Buy yourself a 2080 Super or wait it out til the newer 3000 series cards come out.....................
Why would we? LOL
amd drivers are a crap shoot. always has.
Aye. Navi was pretty much a new architecture for AMD, so they sure as heck got some shotty drivers from time to time. Nvidia and intel had similar issues from time to time. Lets not forget the Nvidia RTX launch wasn't flawless either.
@@Deliveredmean42 this is why I don't buy in on new tech right away. You wait out the kinks to get fixed then decide what you want
@@franzb69 Yep, that's what I been doing so far.
Bit late maybe but is there any point getting the 5700xt over the vega 64 "which I own" with a morpheus cooler?
