Thanks for doing the tests. I purchased the ASRock Challenger and found similar issues with heat. To solve for the heat issues, created a custom gaming fan profile which is basically a straight line running the fan at 2200RPM for consistency at any temp above 60C. I have a Mini ITX build in a Core V1 case and the normal two slot card Challenger 5700XT was the only one that fit other than the reference blower. I also purchased the Sapphire reference 5700XT with a waterblock for a microATX build. At stock both where not great performers but with some tweaking I was pretty impressed.

Ordered a Red Dragon 5700XT on sale, arrived yesterday, first Radeon discrete GPU I've had since a 9250 back in 2004. I'm very happy so far! Actual aluminium back plate with thermal pads, which may help explain why the thermals are so good for such a light/simple heat sink. Made my decision based on this particular video, thanks very much Steve!

It's def hot out of the box but I undervolted it and added 4 120mm fans to my case for a total of 8 and that combo has dropped the temps by 20 degrees. I've thought about it but I prefer to show the out of the box experience and you can work out which cards work well very easily with the data already provided. It might be something we add in the future but for now we're happy with this format. I might add a dBA/GPU Temp graph though for an easier comparison between the two.

Hardware Unboxed: I agree, show temps out of the box so people who don’t tweak with their card know how it will perform. However, right after that slide maybe do a sound normalized trial as it discounts any fan-temperature manipulation by the manufacturers just to look good in reviews. Great work anyways I know these benchmarks took a hell of a long time to do.

I bought an Asrock Challenger 5700XT because I wanted the XT as soon as possible and all the other options had sold out within hours of release. Frankly I wish I'd gotten the reference blower model. This is the loudest card I've ever had. It makes my whole desk hum and I can feel that through my HOTAS even though I have that soft mounted. Fortunately temps do seem stable even running furmark for a long time, but it's working hard to make that happen. If I'd bought the reference card it'd still be hot and loud, but at least I'd have that daft little notch to make me smile.

Obviously with the focus being the price finding the ultimate cheap 5700 would save a lot of people from buying bad cheap 5700 cards. The results won't necessarily carry over from the xt test as the silicon is worse and a cooling solution which does the job for the xt won't necessarily do the same for a 5700 with xt bios that isn't intended and tested to work at those frequencies.

Which begs the question: can these cheaper cooling solutions handle it? The more expensive aib models probably can, but can the cheap ones do it as well? I think it is worth testing.
