- This second entry in the "Live Comparison" series which focuses on Elvis' renditions of "Just Pretend".

Just Pretend is a song which despite it's status as a mere album track, and without a single release, has become a firm favourite with Elvis' extensive fanbase and the appearance of a filmed live version in 1992 was a definite highlight of "The Lost Performances"
'Just Pretend' was a song which was had long been synonymous with TTWII, since the studio master was on the original 1970 album. It would always be difficult to replicate the magnificent controlled vocal on stage particularly with the constant changes between verse and chorus. However, Elvis still does a wonderful job but this version is slightly eclipsed by the version twenty four hours later, where a slight tweak in the mix gives a little more prominence to the french horn and Millie Kirkhham's soprano.
08:07 Version Three
In February 1971, Elvis sang the song at least three times during his fourth Las Vegas engagement. This rendition is the first of those from his midnight show on 19 February. The wonderful soprano is now performed by Kathy Westmoreland who took over from Millie Kirkham mid-August 1970.
10:26 Version Four
The only rendition known to have been performed outside Las Vegas was this wonderful rendition from Hawaii on 18 November 1972, and rarely performed by Elvis at the time. The large arena really makes that gorgeous soprano stand out.
14:23 Version Five
During Elvis' Vegas engagement of December 1975, an engagement arranged in response to the abandoned August stint, the song had a renaissance with Elvis performing it in the majority of those shows. The arrangement had changed slightly as had Elvis' delivery but it still sounds superb.

Just Pretend was one of those songs that should of been huge as a single it was perfect for country radio play at the time. One of the best by the best. Truly underrated song and lyric.
I love this song . What an amazing voice. Elvis is the most fantastic performer and will never go out of fashion. Appealing to all generations. I never tire of hearing him. Love him madly.
Here is an example of Elvis putting every bit of his heart and soul into a song. Each great within its own right. Each equally deserving of the best performance. That’s what’s so amazing about this man. Just when you think he can’t perform it any better, BAM!!! He raises his own bar! Purely amazed.

Great video Leon, I LOVE the 1975 version. In fact the entire concert from that night is wonderful. One of my favourite Elvis shows.
there was a reason looking from outside I think. he was an Artist was a Canvas. he was given a Canvas with a picture. then when he was looking at it, he felt that the picture needed to be enhanced to perfection. and so he painted it with his magic. A master piece was created and these are what we are left with when he left this world. so even though he didn't put pen to paper, I don't see at all the difference. he was a master above all else. I can write a song and it be crap, but give it to him and be something else. see the picture here? This is why his music are everlasting. because he made sure that they be everlasting. he was a very clever young man, who was looked down at school musically by his music teacher and look at him. he went on to be An ICON and a G.O.A.T

This series is shaping up to the channel's best yet! Both songs so far have focused on two of Elvis' best. I wish he had sung both Just Pretend and Kentucky Rain more often than he did. I've never understood Elvis' concert setlists - especially when he was on the road - and why repetition was the order of the day more than exploring his vast songbook. To be sure, he does that some but too often each concert sound exactly the same (even if still amazingly entertaining).
But the Just Pretend is just amazing. The 1971 version is one I didn't even know existed! Like other commentators, I love the '75 versions, if just for their smoothness. The bluesy/country feel of those versions shows the smooth and rich nature of his vocals, although he does sound a bit tired - while the 1970/72 versions show the range and power of his greatest gift, that amazing voice.

I wish Elvis would have sang How The Web Was Woven, Sylvia, The Sound Of Your Cry, and If I Can Dream.
He tried to change up the sets after doing the same one, and rehearsed hard on a new one, but when he did the new set, the audience wasn't receptive at all. Elvis was really disappointed because he'd worked so hard to give them new stuff. I think that's when he started getting bored doing the same thing over and over. What fans didn't understand, Elvis had to have new challenges. Tom Parker Never understood that or cared, he was only interested in the money Elvis was making him. He made more money than Elvis did and worked him to death!

So yeah, this is one of my all time favorites from Elvis ever since I heard him sing it live. I don't listen to it very often because it makes me cry... a lot. Still as beautiful as ever. Thank you for this one.
I really love how he’s so very in tune with every note and every instrument and how you can so clearly see how the music - again, every single instrument and note moves and affects him. And of course there’s the pure power and tenderness - so much emotion - in his voice. The man was simply phenomenal in every way. I love him always and forever. ❤❤❤❤

18 minutes of "Just Pretend"! This is one of my favorite Elvis songs. For my money, the first, TTWIS, version is the best, sheer perfection with Elvis' voice a finely tuned instrument. Surprisingly,
the last version from '75 is a close second.

It's obvious we're going to love the best recordings and sound of beloved ELVIS. In my opinion all shows he ever did should've been filmed and with good audio too. Imagine if we could've seen all the very early days recorded and then upsampled for viewing today. Dang, opportunity lost. It killed me when I heard a lot of sessions were recorded over because of the cost. We have a lot to listen to and see, but I would gladly take more!
