Here's a thing I know about Elvis' speaking voice....our neighbor worked at Paramount Pictures when Elvis was there filming 'King Creole'. She took us with her to meet him. We were only 8 and 6, but already big fans. She was trying to comfort us because our mom had died that same summer. This clip showed his regular voice speaking to other adults, I remember it being so different with children. He knelt down so as to be on our level, put a hand on our shoulders and spoke deeply, softly and in very soothing resonant tones. We were immediately at ease and happy to accept his invitation to lunch in the commissary. He suggested the macaroni and cheese. It was good.

He not only performed all of these various genre's he did so authentically, convincingly and masterfully.

Absolutely, people that knew him, many of them stars themselves have all said that he had such an enormous presence that you could literally feel it when he entered a room. Even if you were facing the complete opposite direction. Each of those people have also said they've never been around another person before him or since that had that type of effect on them. A couple people described it as almost like an aura was around him, you couldn't see it but they said it was almost like static electricity.

We played Peace In The Valley at my mom's memorial last week. There were a few younger folks there who had never heard it but commented on what a powerful piece it was. Miss you, Mom!
My mom passed when I was 6, she got sick when I was 3. I have very early memories of her still. One that sticks with me is driving in the car with her and the radio announced Elvis' death. My mom pulled over and started to cry. I remember asking her who Elvis was, and she cried even harder saying I would never know Elvis. Growing up, after she died, I consumed anything of Elvis I could. It made me feel closer to my mom. Along the way, I too fell in love with Elvis.

Now, you need to go to Graceland. I’ve been a couple of times. It’s well worth it. And if you go there, you MUST go to Sun Studios just a hop, skip, a jump away. Pay for the tour (that may come with the ticket🤔). Not only will you see where it all started for Elvis, but for many other singers like Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich, and Jerry Lee Lewis. They have one of those old-style microphones that was probably used by these singers at some point that you can hold onto to, lean back with, etc. Fun!
One of the very best things about Elvis (god knows there were many) was his heart. He was a kind man, very generous and humble and respectful. I recently went down an Elvis Presley rabbit-hole here on UA-cam mainly consisting of interviews over the years of people who knew him personally and were speaking of his kind heart. There was a documentary I saw that focused on his generosity and kindness in particular, titled something to the effect of X (can't remember the number) in Cadillacs. It featured an interview where someone was talking about how one of Elvis Presley's favorite things in the world to do was surprising people with lavish gifts or the type of monetary support that, for many people, is life changing. The title of the documentary was in reference to the fact that Elvis frequently gifted Cadillacs. He'd buy them for fans, business associates, even totally at random. One instance in particular was explained in the documentary specifically was a time where he was at his local Cadillac dealership looking at cars. A random woman was also there on the other side of the dealership looking around basically window shopping since Cadillacs would have been way out of her price point. She wasn't aware that Elvis was there. The details are a bit blury now. But somehow or another Elvis became aware of her presence. She may have made a comment about how beautiful the car was that he was buying. Something like that, anyway. He ended up buying her one just like it right there on the spot. In the same documentary, someone being interviewed brought up another incident of Elvis' next level generosity. He needed to make a call at a payphone and realized he didn't have any loose change. I guess no one in his immediate entourage did either. A random dude that was watching them search their pockets for change approached and offered Elvis the change he needed. Elvis accepted and thanked him and asked for his information so he could give him his change back at a later date. The guy told him it wasn't necessary. Not wanting to embarrass the guy on the spot by continuing to insist on paying him back, he made his call and left. But he had someone in his entourage to go back and get the guy's information in private. So that's exactly what was done, and the guy wound up giving Elvis' assistant his information. A few weeks later Elvis personally called him up and asked him if he remembered giving him that change on the street. The guy remembered, of course. Elvis thanked him personally and then put an assistant on the phone. That's when the man was informed that Elvis paid off the entirety of his mortgage. He now owned his home outright. Elvis did this this kind of thing ALL. THE. TIME. And her preferred to do it privately. This sentiment applied to regular donations to countless charities, helping total strangers, low-tier employees associated with his businesses, and more. He tried to keep it private because he had absolutely ZERO interest in being charitable for good press. So the vast majority of his generosity will never be known. But what is known goes so far beyond ANY other celebrity in history. Not even Taylor Swift comes close, and she's very generous and private about charities. It wasn't even just his money that he gifted, either. He donated a lot of time as well and would very often visit hospitals to spend time with sick and dying patients. Very often it would be terminal children. And he did it all the time. I can't imagine how heartbreaking it would be to see that as much as he did but he never stopped. In the years following his passing, a lot of stuff came out about all the countless charities Elvis donated to annually. SO MANY OF THEM. Elvis and his generous, kind heart had always been known and celebrated throughout the entirety of his career. But the extent of it was never known until after his passing because in life he was always very adament about it staying quiet. Someone who knew him well personally said nothing in the world made Elvis happier than seeing the immediate reaction of someone after being informed of whatever charity/donation was being provided to them. And added that Elvis was always just as moved by it no many how many times and years he did it. Elvis was a very precious and kind soul who truly loved his fellow man and wanted to use his celebrity and fortune to bless as many people as possible. And he preferred it never to come out if he could help it as he wasn't looking for praise or glory. After learning so much about the kind of man he was it honestly makes me cry.
You can't help smiling can you? His smile is so infectious because he never took himself too seriously. The whole thing was one big hoot. I loved that about him. `having said that. his gospel songs were a whole other matter, and In The Ghetto.

Fil-You are correct that Elvis was not conscious of most classic vocal techniques, and yet he effortlessly incorporated so many of them into his singing. Much of that was developed when he sang in church, growing up. I also grew up in the rural area outside Memphis, and went to similar churches. You could actually hear the subtle "below the note" vibrato, and the near-octave jumps in the voices of many people in that time and place. That was just the way people sang in fundamentalist protestant churches in that area. It was a very emotional experience, and that came out in their voices. Elvis grew up doing the same thing and continued it when he started singing popular (rather than religious) music. And, here's an extra Elvis tidbit: my mother was 22 years old and living in Memphis in July, 1954. She never forgot the time and place she first heard "That's All Right, Mama" on the radio. She said it was as if a lightbulb went on, and she realized there really was music-like going from black and white to color. Then in 1968, she saw Elvis' comeback special, she said she got the same feeling all over again. Amazing.

Elvis, the great one. The black leather jacket had to be his coolest look. All of the parodies of Elvis aside, this was a singularly amazing and truly great artist. He was the best live, because he had SUCH a good chemistry with his fans, sort of mutual adoration. They’re literally right there next to him and he loves it.
I once spoke to a vocal coach and asked him why Elvis was so great? And he laughed when saying "[y]ou mean besides being the greatest cultural force of the 20th century?" But then he said, "Because for my money no singer has ever sung so many different genres so remarkably well," and in thinking about it, he seems quite right. While thanks Phil as you're a national treasure to both your own country and the USA! While I've always found Elvis' progression from singing rockabilly to something like 'HURT' (semi-operatic) amazing, with everything in between being a remarkable musical journey. As his greatness seemed to come from his being fearless in the notes he would go after and hit as his range never stopped broadening. So, on the one hand, I get what the Beatles meant when saying "Elvis died in the army," because he went in so many more different directions than the one they fell in love with. But, time has shown that we're all better off for it!
When I was 13 in 1958, the only thing I got for Christmas was Elvis' Golden Records - and it was more than enough! In 2017, I introduced Elvis to my husband, who had spent his youth in Yellowstone Park during the 1950's, before the interstate highway system had made the park accessible. So he had never really been exposed to the magic that was Elvis. (He told me they could only get the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on the radio.) My husband had alzheimer's in 2017, and oh, my! did he ever love Elvis! I think it was Elvis' ability to authentically communicate being a young man that reached my husband, and enabled him to feel the feelings of a young man for the last few months of his life. That's quite a gift - all around. I really appreciate your analysis of what made up the magic of Elvis. Your sound illustrations are really good! I think you probably have some magic of your own in being able to carry the ideas through from thoughts to illustrations. You belie the old saying, "Those who can't, teach."

Definitely either here on in Vegas in 1969 and 1970. Those first 2 stints he did at the International Hotel when they filmed the That's the Way It Is documentary he was like a Tiger who has just been released back into the wild. Such energy and he was in awesome shape physically paired with his matured voice and the Karate Gi inspired jumpsuits he wore in that period was just something unparalleled. And notice how many of the other entertainers began to dress on stage even up to the early 80s in some genres of music, they all emulated how Elvis dressed. His influence on the world is really more impactful than any other celebrity by far and perhaps even any other person aside from Jesus Christ himself.

He was endowed with his beautiful vocals by his creator and his absolute love of music and performing before an audience was his life's blood. ❤️ He adored his fans and was a perfectionist about his music and had stunning good looks to top it off.

I wasn’t into Elvis being a kid back then. I thought he was my parents music, even though I knew he was a big deal. I was into his competition the Beatles, Stones and the hippy scene. It wasn’t until years later that I realized how talented he was and the huge impact he had on me. Such an exciting time back then musically with the Ed Sullivan Show I loved all the music just a little immature to appreciate it!!☮️❤️😎

I was just an 8 year old kid when he was first making waves and I knew even at that age that he was something special. I guess he was my very first celeb crush. I became a teen and fell in love with the Beatles, idolized the many of the 60's and early 70's bands but I never outgrew my love for Elvis. His talent lives on and hopefully, new generations will discover him as we did.

Young Elvis was vocally versatile. He had a raw rock voice for Jailhouse Rock and then he's a smooth crooner in songs like Are you lonesome tonight and he had hints of an opera quality in his final years which was present when he sang I did it my way and Moody Blue.
It was great when he got older in the 70s some powerful vocals but it was much more versatile 50s and early 60s early 60s Nashville fantastic he was much more iconic and healthy when he was younger also he was always great but ae his best between 1955 and 1963 to me that's when Elvis was at his best have a great day ✋🏼✋🏻😎
As a kid of a teacher and stay at home mom, my parents could not buy me every LP or 45 I wanted, but I had two Elvis LP's that I would listen to and sing with over and over. Helped build my love of singing, which I still do almost every day. ❤

Fil, Elvis is my favorite music artist. I remember all his silly movies (That I enjoyed) and back in Junior High and High School I got a lot of crap for being an Elvis fan. That night on December 3, 1968 when his TV Special aired, I expected a lightweight Perry Como, Andy Williams or at best Tom Jones type special. When the opener "Trouble/Guitar Man" started with its first notes, the screen was still black for a second and then when Elvis started singing, the lights came on. HOLY CRAP! Right off it was apparent we were in for rock n roll ride from the master. The impact of that special after all the cotton candy fluffy movies was like a rock n roll resurrection! Well let's just say I did not have to hang my head in school any more. Anyone who only have seen this special in retrospect probably could not appreciate the full impact what the first airing had. I was like a tiger was roaring after you had been lulled to sleep for 8 years. In the middle of the flower power movement, here comes this leather clad gladiator taking all all comers, triumphantly.

Absolutely, people that knew him, many of them stars themselves have all said that he had such an enormous presence that you could literally feel it when he entered a room. Even if you were facing the complete opposite direction. Each of those people have also said they've never been around another person before him or since that had that type of effect on them. A couple people described it as almost like an aura was around him, you couldn't see it but they said it was almost like static electricity.

This was Elvis's comeback show, I remember it being on T.V in 68, he had never looked so good, it was a triumph
My mom passed when I was 6, she got sick when I was 3. I have very early memories of her still. One that sticks with me is driving in the car with her and the radio announced Elvis' death. My mom pulled over and started to cry. I remember asking her who Elvis was, and she cried even harder saying I would never know Elvis. Growing up, after she died, I consumed anything of Elvis I could. It made me feel closer to my mom. Along the way, I too fell in love with Elvis.
I was there in the audience for this performance, and it was such a great night. The whole show was so special.

Now, you need to go to Graceland. I’ve been a couple of times. It’s well worth it. And if you go there, you MUST go to Sun Studios just a hop, skip, a jump away. Pay for the tour (that may come with the ticket🤔). Not only will you see where it all started for Elvis, but for many other singers like Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich, and Jerry Lee Lewis. They have one of those old-style microphones that was probably used by these singers at some point that you can hold onto to, lean back with, etc. Fun!
One of the very best things about Elvis (god knows there were many) was his heart. He was a kind man, very generous and humble and respectful. I recently went down an Elvis Presley rabbit-hole here on UA-cam mainly consisting of interviews over the years of people who knew him personally and were speaking of his kind heart. There was a documentary I saw that focused on his generosity and kindness in particular, titled something to the effect of X (can't remember the number) in Cadillacs. It featured an interview where someone was talking about how one of Elvis Presley's favorite things in the world to do was surprising people with lavish gifts or the type of monetary support that, for many people, is life changing. The title of the documentary was in reference to the fact that Elvis frequently gifted Cadillacs. He'd buy them for fans, business associates, even totally at random. One instance in particular was explained in the documentary specifically was a time where he was at his local Cadillac dealership looking at cars. A random woman was also there on the other side of the dealership looking around basically window shopping since Cadillacs would have been way out of her price point. She wasn't aware that Elvis was there. The details are a bit blury now. But somehow or another Elvis became aware of her presence. She may have made a comment about how beautiful the car was that he was buying. Something like that, anyway. He ended up buying her one just like it right there on the spot.
In the same documentary, someone being interviewed brought up another incident of Elvis' next level generosity. He needed to make a call at a payphone and realized he didn't have any loose change. I guess no one in his immediate entourage did either. A random dude that was watching them search their pockets for change approached and offered Elvis the change he needed. Elvis accepted and thanked him and asked for his information so he could give him his change back at a later date. The guy told him it wasn't necessary. Not wanting to embarrass the guy on the spot by continuing to insist on paying him back, he made his call and left. But he had someone in his entourage to go back and get the guy's information in private. So that's exactly what was done, and the guy wound up giving Elvis' assistant his information. A few weeks later Elvis personally called him up and asked him if he remembered giving him that change on the street. The guy remembered, of course. Elvis thanked him personally and then put an assistant on the phone. That's when the man was informed that Elvis paid off the entirety of his mortgage. He now owned his home outright. Elvis did this this kind of thing ALL. THE. TIME. And her preferred to do it privately. This sentiment applied to regular donations to countless charities, helping total strangers, low-tier employees associated with his businesses, and more. He tried to keep it private because he had absolutely ZERO interest in being charitable for good press. So the vast majority of his generosity will never be known. But what is known goes so far beyond ANY other celebrity in history. Not even Taylor Swift comes close, and she's very generous and private about charities. It wasn't even just his money that he gifted, either. He donated a lot of time as well and would very often visit hospitals to spend time with sick and dying patients. Very often it would be terminal children. And he did it all the time. I can't imagine how heartbreaking it would be to see that as much as he did but he never stopped. In the years following his passing, a lot of stuff came out about all the countless charities Elvis donated to annually. SO MANY OF THEM. Elvis and his generous, kind heart had always been known and celebrated throughout the entirety of his career. But the extent of it was never known until after his passing because in life he was always very adament about it staying quiet.
Someone who knew him well personally said nothing in the world made Elvis happier than seeing the immediate reaction of someone after being informed of whatever charity/donation was being provided to them. And added that Elvis was always just as moved by it no many how many times and years he did it. Elvis was a very precious and kind soul who truly loved his fellow man and wanted to use his celebrity and fortune to bless as many people as possible. And he preferred it never to come out if he could help it as he wasn't looking for praise or glory. After learning so much about the kind of man he was it honestly makes me cry.
You can't help smiling can you? His smile is so infectious because he never took himself too seriously. The whole thing was one big hoot. I loved that about him. `having said that. his gospel songs were a whole other matter, and In The Ghetto.

Fil-You are correct that Elvis was not conscious of most classic vocal techniques, and yet he effortlessly incorporated so many of them into his singing. Much of that was developed when he sang in church, growing up. I also grew up in the rural area outside Memphis, and went to similar churches. You could actually hear the subtle "below the note" vibrato, and the near-octave jumps in the voices of many people in that time and place. That was just the way people sang in fundamentalist protestant churches in that area. It was a very emotional experience, and that came out in their voices. Elvis grew up doing the same thing and continued it when he started singing popular (rather than religious) music. And, here's an extra Elvis tidbit: my mother was 22 years old and living in Memphis in July, 1954. She never forgot the time and place she first heard "That's All Right, Mama" on the radio. She said it was as if a lightbulb went on, and she realized there really was music-like going from black and white to color. Then in 1968, she saw Elvis' comeback special, she said she got the same feeling all over again. Amazing.

Elvis, the great one. The black leather jacket had to be his coolest look. All of the parodies of Elvis aside, this was a singularly amazing and truly great artist. He was the best live, because he had SUCH a good chemistry with his fans, sort of mutual adoration. They’re literally right there next to him and he loves it.
I once spoke to a vocal coach and asked him why Elvis was so great? And he laughed when saying "[y]ou mean besides being the greatest cultural force of the 20th century?" But then he said, "Because for my money no singer has ever sung so many different genres so remarkably well," and in thinking about it, he seems quite right.
While thanks Phil as you're a national treasure to both your own country and the USA! While I've always found Elvis' progression from singing rockabilly to something like 'HURT' (semi-operatic) amazing, with everything in between being a remarkable musical journey. As his greatness seemed to come from his being fearless in the notes he would go after and hit as his range never stopped broadening.
So, on the one hand, I get what the Beatles meant when saying "Elvis died in the army," because he went in so many more different directions than the one they fell in love with. But, time has shown that we're all better off for it!

When I was 13 in 1958, the only thing I got for Christmas was Elvis' Golden Records - and it was more than enough! In 2017, I introduced Elvis to my husband, who had spent his youth in Yellowstone Park during the 1950's, before the interstate highway system had made the park accessible. So he had never really been exposed to the magic that was Elvis. (He told me they could only get the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on the radio.) My husband had alzheimer's in 2017, and oh, my! did he ever love Elvis! I think it was Elvis' ability to authentically communicate being a young man that reached my husband, and enabled him to feel the feelings of a young man for the last few months of his life. That's quite a gift - all around.

His '68 Comeback Special was an amazing production from start to finish. I especially loved the Gospel song and dance segment of the show.

Definitely either here on in Vegas in 1969 and 1970. Those first 2 stints he did at the International Hotel when they filmed the That's the Way It Is documentary he was like a Tiger who has just been released back into the wild. Such energy and he was in awesome shape physically paired with his matured voice and the Karate Gi inspired jumpsuits he wore in that period was just something unparalleled. And notice how many of the other entertainers began to dress on stage even up to the early 80s in some genres of music, they all emulated how Elvis dressed. His influence on the world is really more impactful than any other celebrity by far and perhaps even any other person aside from Jesus Christ himself.
I have to disagree. 1 year later, as the docu TTWII about his comeback shows in Las Vegas in 1969 proves, he looked even better.

Thanks FIL for this vocal analysis of Elvis. Your musical knowledge is impressive. That being said, it seems to me that Elvis's vocal abilities were God given. He did not have professional training. He was endowed with his beautiful vocals by his creator and his absolute love of music and performing before an audience was his life's blood. ❤️ He adored his fans and was a perfectionist about his music and had stunning good looks to top it off.
Understanding how we are emotionally triggered by vocal technique is something I've never really thought about before. I've been watching your videos for several months now, and your encouraging declarations that anyone can sing has motivated me to try to learn. I wasn’t into Elvis being a kid back then. I thought he was my parents music, even though I knew he was a big deal. I was into his competition the Beatles, Stones and the hippy scene. It wasn’t until years later that I realized how talented he was and the huge impact he had on me. Such an exciting time back then musically with the Ed Sullivan Show I loved all the music just a little immature to appreciate it!!☮️❤️😎

I was just an 8 year old kid when he was first making waves and I knew even at that age that he was something special. I guess he was my very first celeb crush. I became a teen and fell in love with the Beatles, idolized the many of the 60's and early 70's bands but I never outgrew my love for Elvis. His talent lives on and hopefully, new generations will discover him as we did.

Young Elvis was vocally versatile. He had a raw rock voice for Jailhouse Rock and then he's a smooth crooner in songs like Are you lonesome tonight and he had hints of an opera quality in his final years which was present when he sang I did it my way and Moody Blue.
It was great when he got older in the 70s some powerful vocals but it was much more versatile 50s and early 60s early 60s Nashville fantastic he was much more iconic and healthy when he was younger also he was always great but ae his best between 1955 and 1963 to me that's when Elvis was at his best have a great day ✋🏼✋🏻😎

Elvis had many God-given gifts! He was truly one of a kind! He also seemed very shy in that talking clip from 1960. I learn so much from your technical explanation, Fil! I particularly like when you show examples when you play your guitar or sing to show your explanation.

Fil, Elvis is my favorite music artist. I remember all his silly movies (That I enjoyed) and back in Junior High and High School I got a lot of crap for being an Elvis fan. That night on December 3, 1968 when his TV Special aired, I expected a lightweight Perry Como, Andy Williams or at best Tom Jones type special. When the opener "Trouble/Guitar Man" started with its first notes, the screen was still black for a second and then when Elvis started singing, the lights came on. HOLY CRAP! Right off it was apparent we were in for rock n roll ride from the master. The impact of that special after all the cotton candy fluffy movies was like a rock n roll resurrection! Well let's just say I did not have to hang my head in school any more. Anyone who only have seen this special in retrospect probably could not appreciate the full impact what the first airing had. I was like a tiger was roaring after you had been lulled to sleep for 8 years. In the middle of the flower power movement, here comes this leather clad gladiator taking all all comers, triumphantly.
