    Five years later, and the GH5S is still a wonderful camera. I love it.

    I used and testest the GH5s for one and a half years now and I have to say that the native ISOs for V-LogL and HLG are still 400 and 2500, not 800 and 5000. The noise and color artifacts you get when shooting ISO 800 take more usable stops DR away from you than it might give mathematical and theoretical level. ISO 400 is very clean with great highlight and shadow detail. ISO 5000 and beyond can still be great with little noise but the color and image quality takes quite the hit. 2500 is almost as sharp as 400 with more shadow detail and much much better color reproduction than 5000. I only ever go over 2500 if there is really not enough light to get any image otherwise. And often I rather under expose at 2500 and pull up to 5000 than shot at 5000 right away. As long as you shoot at ISO 400 or 2500 and expose right the GH5s is a beast in terms of image quality and gradebility. Also it’s super reliable with great battery life and IO.

    You are one of the few to point out that larger photosites do help with color rendition next to better lowlight performance. For me personally better color and more dr is an even bigger selling point than lowlight. Especially in combination with those 10bit, that sony does not have yet. Would have been nice to see some daytime footage comparison with other cameras too, for color and dr. Maybe in a future review?

    Lovely, lovely footage. First question: how did you adapt the MK to the MFT mount? Second question: what lighting did you use? Again, just so well done.

    Keep in mind the A7S and A7R and the new A7 III are all 8 bit 4 2 0 video capable and only 30 minute record time. So while the Sonys do supply better low light and are full frame sensors the final internal recording is far inferior to the GH5s. Wondering if you were using the metabones adapter or the speed booster?

    What camera and lens did you use to film the episode? You notes say the c200 + sigma 18-35 but you episode notes that it was the C300? The shots as you explained things looks great.

    Lovely review! Both the GH5 and GH5s are really nice cameras. If you would compare the GH5 with in-body I.S. a Speedbooster and Sigma 18-35 to the GH5s with a Speedbooster and let's say the new Tamron 24-70 G2 VC. Would you notice a big difference with handheld shooting you think? If the GH5s really has 14 stops of DR in video mode that would be sick.

    The real unknown here is does it really have 14 stops DR in video? I've heard a number of pros saying it and yet only Kai has shown a waveform to substantiate anything, and that showed it didn't have and DR benefit over the GH5. So, does it have 14 stops or not???

    That was really good...impressive to say the least! Did they fix the bugs with the focusing issues the GH5 was having? A lot of reviews seem to hound on that and some even indicate the firmware update didn't help much. Also, I'm really wanting a camera that delivers exceptional slowmo so how does the GH5s perform? Lastly, when shooting slowmo with the GH5 you have to over-expose the screen in order to get the correct exposure when you actually record, has that been addressed or is there something I'm missing with that in the setup process. Just started following and your channel is very educational!

  • @CLIFFLIX
    @CLIFFLIX 7 років тому

    So it has been highly speculated that this uses a Sony STARVIS IMX294 sensor. We do know as an absolute fact that the current GH5 uses a Sony IMX272. (ChipWorks tore the motherboard apart and X-ray'd the sensor as well as doing an electron microscope inspection of the foundry of the chip) It's unknown as of yet if the EVA-1 is a Sony or another maker. Do you have an idea of what the GH5-s dynamic range is? Also with the GH5, we have 6k image readout and 4k scaling that produce VERY detailed images. How to you compare he GH5-S' resolving power with it using a more simple 1:1 (or close to it) lower resolution readout? Thanks for this great video.

    • @ProAVTV
      @ProAVTV  7 років тому

      Panasonic say 14 stops, and I find it hard to believe its not using the new Sony Starvis sensor. I prefer the sharpness and detail on the gh5s, I have always found the gh4 and gh5 a little 'Over sharpened' and I think the Gh5s does a great job of being detailed but not over sharp.
      Carl

    • @CLIFFLIX
      @CLIFFLIX 7 років тому

      14 stops??? My God, from a MFT sensor? What are those pixel wells?...4 or 5 microns? The A7S-II photosites are 8 microns. This makes you wonder what the new A7s-III will be like? What if Sony put's this tech into a full frame 12mp sensor? Rumors say that Panasonic could buy this same sensor for their DVX200 replacement ENG camera....wow!

    • @indyfilmmaker2079
      @indyfilmmaker2079 7 років тому

      This is simply a misconception. VLOG-L cannot give out 14 stops of DR. It has a max of 12 stops which is exactly the same as the GH5.

    • @CLIFFLIX
      @CLIFFLIX 7 років тому

      Do you mean that it can do 14 stops of DR because it tops out at 80IRE? (on the current GH5 anyay) In theory, if this STARVIS MFTsensor can do 14 stops, that should spread the wave form out as high as 90 or 95 IRE in a VLog curve. I'm hearing some reviewers say that GH5-S is doing the same DR as the current GH5. Dont know what to think yet.

    • @indyfilmmaker2079
      @indyfilmmaker2079 7 років тому

      CLIFFLIX well it really does come down to being limited to vlog-l which the GH4 had and the GH5 which was limited to a maximum of 12 stops infact it can't go higher than 12 stops. This has been confirmed by many reviewers. I honestly thought we'd see an increase in DR.

    How do you like the E-image GH06 head with the GH5? How long can you shoot and still pan smoothly with it? What kind of legs do you have? I'm searching for a head that I can smoothly pan with the Panasonic 100-400 without putting out too much money...

    • @ProAVTV
      @ProAVTV  7 років тому +1

      Absolutely, the GH06 can handle far heavier cameras, we recommend it mainly to C200, EVA & FS5 customers. But it can definitely handle a gh5 with a long lens

    I only shoot video with my GH4, love it and shoot stills with 5D3. How would you compare the GH5S to the A7RIII? The GH4 is the ideal form factor for shooting aerial but I don't know how well the stabilization in the GH5 would work on a gimbal since the GH4 doesn't have it anyway, not sure I'd miss it.

    Fantastic video my friend. You definitely maximized the gh5s footage best as far as ive seen. Kais footage wasnt as clean an his review of it didnt make it look as good as your footage. But arent you using the gh5s with a speedbooster? In all fairness it should compared to other cameras with native m43 lenses. As other cameras should be using their native lenses for a fair comparison. Im just curious. I wasnt sure if that was a regular metabones vs the metabones speedbooster

    • @ProAVTV
      @ProAVTV  7 років тому +1

      It was a speedbooster, because i wasnt really interested in fairness. I was interested in seeing how good the new sensor can look. If you can get that low light with the GH5s just by using a speedbooster and a fast prime, thats really important to know and a huge plus for the camera

  • @indyfilmmaker2079
    @indyfilmmaker2079 7 років тому

    I think theres a big misconception here... The issue is, there isn't 14 stops of DR, infact its not possible since VLOG-L can only give out 12 stops of Dynamic range, which is exactly the same as the GH5. So in terms of Dynamic range being 14 stops is simply incorrect. If they released Full VLOG then it could be possible, but this is still the same Vlog (light) as the GH5 and GH4.

    • @ProAVTV
      @ProAVTV  7 років тому

      It does seem that way.. but Pana do claim 14 stops. I'm sure people will start doing tests soon to see if theres any difference. It did feel like there was a difference when we were filming

    • @JamesJacksonFilmz
      @JamesJacksonFilmz 7 років тому +1

      Mike Polaroid well to get a little nerdy on you, Vlog is still going to introduce the most noise, but the highest dynamic range "in most situations". But for certain low lit situations, HLG gives you the best option at the 2nd native Iso. HLG acts like log in the highlights but like rec709 in the shadows. So it will be clean in the shadows like neutral but give far more dynamic range than the standard profiles. But either HLG or Vlog is now better in low light than the other profiles.

    The GH5-S is cleaner than the EVA-1 because it uses a Sony STARVIS IMX294 (variant) sensor and the EVA-1 is not a Sony sensor. Sony STARVIS technology uses a patented quad-pixel array with offset exposure timing (slow and fast) for two of the photosites in each quad cluster. It's quite amazing collection and readout technology. It is a full BSI sensor while the EVA-1 is just a standard FSI sensor without the EXMOR A/D column conversion that the STARVIS has. You are comparing a traditional and older Super35mm sensor design to a HIGHLY advanced "next generation" Micro 4/3 sensor that is very much cutting edge, Sony patented architecture. Yes,..this is quite shocking, indeed. When Sony applies the STARVIS technology to a full frame sensor (A7S-III??) we are going to see a sensor that goes WAY beyond our wildest dreams of signal to noise ratio.

    Funny when u go down to SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio)... When images speak and Canon Cine lens speaks too here.
    U loose like 6db (typically) when u add 1 stop of sensitivity.
    U read that te GH5S has the same (visible) noise than a GH5 @3200 ISO when GH5S is @16000 ISO
    Do the math : 2.5 stops better = 15db less noisy.
    The GH5 as an SNR of 40.7 db @60ISO
    Means GH5S may reach 55.7 db SNR @ lowest ISO... The Sony A7 SII only reaches 45.2 db @ 74 ISO
    Conclusion : the GH5S should be a way cleaner camera than Sony A7 SII at low ISO : 10db better = more pure color...
    Just look here : 2:52 and further. The good idea here is to look through a cine lens that has a very low SNR too. Good choice ProAV.

    I think that you are making too big a deal of the colour differences that the two cameras will produce when using different lenses. There are other factors that hugely influence colour far more so than who made the glass. The camera's internal colour science is probably going to be the biggest factor, but to say that any comparison is going to be unfair because the glass on one camera comes from Sony and the other comes from Canon, is just going too far.

      I know, as far as I’m aware the Linux line has always used Sony sensors though. There’s just a lot of press about it this time
