Truly enjoyed the video, guys. Solid information and samples for our viewing pleasure. I own the GH5S (purchased about 2 months ago) and I am blown away by the breadth and depth of its capabilities. I am a photographer primarily but also shoot video for some larger jobs and need low light camera to get clean footage. Wow! Does the GH5S deliver. I am a Canon shooter primarily (R6 for both photos and videos). I had read and watched so much about this camera and it truly lives up to the hype. I love that it doesn’t limit my recordings to 29:59 like all the other DSLR cameras do. The ability to get Vlog standard and the multiple functions buttons on this camera and a few of the other video techniques built in (internal pan and zoom) make this camera a true gem! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience. Have a blessed day!!
FINALLY a fantastic video featuring the GH5s by someone who knows what they're doing. So much test footage out there is poorly exposed, well done here 👍🏼
The fact that they removed IBIS is not bad at all, since most filmmakers use gimbals to stabilize their shots anyways. Also, if you were to get the GH5 and turn IBIS off, the sensor would still be floating around in a field of magnets and not locked into place. The GH5S and GH5 are used for different types of scenarios. Also, by removing IBIS on the GH5S, they were able to put in the Dual Native ISO technology and much more, so I would personally consider this change an upgrade since I also use a gimbal 90% of the time.
Great job on this comparison guys; best explanation I've seen so far on these two great cameras and where they each excel. For me, the GH5S looks like the one to go for, as it will mainly be used for gimbal work and some low light shooting. Only hope is that V-LOG will match well with C-LOG 2 from the C300 mk II which is my A-CAM.
The greatest thing in your video - the highlight roll off - the harsh glow is gone!! Skies look good again (without having to use a gad ND) - nice work gents!
I am VERY IMPRESSED with with this video! With my 25+ years of video production, I know good video when I see it! And I can say THIS IS GOOD VIDEO! Well Done! Now regarding the camera, I am ALSO impressed. I am a Sony F55/F65 guy and a Canon 1Dc/x2 to C700 guy and while it is a completely unfair comparison to those higher end systems, this GH5s does actually offer reasonably COMPARABLE footage if graded correctly. In terms of image stabilization, just put this camera on a higher end gimbal stick which weighs less than 2 kilos to carry around in a packsack and use that gimbal to keep your footage stable and jitter-free. It's NOT A BIG DEAL that IBIS isn't on this camera! For the price and size, I could DEFINITELY use this camera as my emergency backup to the C300mk2 or C700 or the Sony FS-5/7 series if am in the field. One key issue is to SPEND THE MONEY YOU SAVE BUYING THIS CAMERA on the BEST and SHARPEST prime lenses you can afford and right now I REALLY LIKE those Sigma Art F1.4 50mm, 85mm and 135 mm lenses!
at three thousand dollars with no lens, you can't really call this a "cheap" camera. You still need to buy the lens, and a stabilizer. Consider how every few years technology improves and prices are reduced. Soon all this technology will also be a lot more affordable.
2-3 grand is cheap for cinema cameras, at that price point your only options are C100ii with the some of the best 1080p images out there, but no 4k, the JVC GY-LS300 which is only 8-bit 4:2:2 or the upcoming Blackmagic pocket which has nothing like the ergonomics and audio capabilities of this camera and needs so much more rigging. Yes, the kind of HD you get from a basic £400 camera these days is as good as the best available from hybrid cameras a decade ago, but is that worth waiting for?
I am not a vedio maker and neither really interested in GH5 line because I am still looking for A7S3. But I added Slovenia on my traveling wishlist after watching this review. Nice review dude.
I may be an outlier here, but I'm still rocking my GH4 and couldn't justify purchasing a GH5 mostly because I didn't see a drastic improvement in low light performance. I know the GH5 has tons of other improvements, but that's what I was really hoping for. I use a gimbal or a camera slider most of the time so I'm used to shooting without IBIS anyway. Now that the GH5S has come along it FINALLY has the low light (higher ISO) performance I've been waiting for. I know quite a few of you are pissed that this newer version doesn't have IBIS, but for someone like me who's already set up to shoot without it this camera seems like the perfect upgrade. Can't wait to buy it!
A beautifully done review, gentlemen! But one thing bothered me about the image. Whenever there was water, and there was quite a lot of it, there was quite a noticeable judder in the wave action. It looked almost like stop-motion photography. Was that a frame-rate issue or something else?
Great footage and review - did moisture ingress to the optic path at the end of your stay? I noted a substantial haze in your last shot which didn't look like the weather would support it?
Is this video main lens 12-35mm f2.8? Amazing video, if you guys come over again in Slovenia, let me know, would be glad to take you somewhere here, Slovenia have alot of nice places to see 😊
Hi DennisDee, yes thats right the lens we used the most was the 12-35mm. Thanks for your offer, we will let you know next time we are around! Thanks for watching. KH
One of the reasons I would and am seriously considering getting the GH5S IS the removal of IBIS entirely. When you’re using the GH5 and you’re encountering lens flare whether it’s on or off the flare bobs and weaves around. Removing that mechanism gives you full control of the orientation of the sensor which is a welcome feature. If you don’t like the camera then don’t get it! There’s nothing wrong with something not fitting your needs and it certainly doesn’t make it a BAD camera just because it doesn’t work for you. Peace and love 🙏 Josh
Nice video Wex, Being a Gh5 owner I cant believe those slow mo shots were that pixelated, not sure what happened there. Looking beyond the other imperfection twas a pleasant watch. cheers.
Best review of the GH5s I have seen. Does this have a less crop factor over the GH5? Your site says 1.33 crop and I have seen specs say 2x crop and others say it has less of a crop than the GH5. Which is it?
That's crazy!!! I have been in a couple of Your gorgeous test locations with my Panasonic :D (GH3)... Compared to the GH5 this new model feels more pleasant to my eyes... I am curious to see how still pictures look like... Really enjoy Your test... Thanks.
Heya guy's, were you filming this on 4K? and i hear this camera do's not have a limit even on the 4K recording function however i was wondering are there any overheating issues as the record time is limitless? :) Thanks
Hi Sam, glad you enjoyed the video. Most of the video was shot using the Panasonic 12-35mm & 35-100mm F2.8, then also a couple of shots on the 25mm F1.7, and the 7-14mm F4. Thanks for watching! KH
Hi Chia-Han Tsai, glad you enjoyed the video. Most of the video was shot using the Panasonic 12-35mm & 35-100mm F2.8, then also a couple of shots on the 25mm F1.7, and the 7-14mm F4. Thanks for watching! KH
Fantastic overview, the location is heaven! The main question for me is will the GH5s support the Metabones Speed booster XL _ Sigma 18-35 combo? If yes, I'm pre-ordering this camera now.
Hey TechLineHD - Thanks for the positive comments, great to hear you enjoyed the video. Yes the Speed booster XL and Sigma 18-35 will work on the GH5S, any lenses and adapters you had that worked on the GH5 will also work on the S. Cheers, KH
Glad you enjoyed it Leroy. Do you mean, is there an additional crop when shooting in 4K, similar to what you have on the GH5/GH4? If so the answer is no. Thanks for watching - KH
Thanks for the review. I'm probably going to upgrade from GH4 to GH5S. The lowlight performance, extra cinema options and vlog luts to view footage in camera are really helpfull. Don't really care about the IBIS because I have a zhiyun crane for that. Having some more MP would be nice as I like to use this for photography too. Luckily it is mostly for social media and not print so I can manage. 240P does not seem like an upgrade as that footage seems soft. Now I just need the nocticron, 12mm 1.4 leica and some nd filters + step up rings and I'm set. What I love about this system is that it's compact and light weight. No need to carry heavy lenses when travelling :D Only thing I don't understand is the big price difference as they are very similar in specs. I can't wait to shoot some cinematic stuff with this!
Hey Reinaert, glad you enjoyed the video. You're going to really enjoy shooting with the GH5S coming from a GH4, a really nice upgrade for you to look forward to! Looking forward to seeing what you shoot with it. Cheers for watching - KH
Hey guys great video. I have a gh5 and documentary passion projects as I am retired and am not looking for a career. So i am looking for a second camera and am torn between the GH5s and the new Zcam E2 M4. I record ProRes on my gh5 with the ninja v and if i bought the gh5s i would record 400mbs so that i maintain the quality. However if I bought the zcam its records ProRes internal. Basically if I do record 400mbs and match it with the gh5 ProRes will it be ok. Or should I go for the zcam because it records ProRes internal. I would truly appreciate any advice as I dont want to waste money by choosing the wrong camera . Hope you can offer some guidance . BIG thanks jf😊
The 240fps looks unusable for professional use at 8:00 the rail looks like a jagged line. I was used to using lens is with my GH4 before going to a GH5 and I really love the IBIS in the GH5. So torn between choosing IBIS or Low Light Sensitivity.
This is a super review guys with lovely footage....im wondering if you want to offer your thoughts on my present dilemma....At present i am genuinely struggling with the decision of buying the gh5s or a sony a7sII or the black magic pocket cinema cam(4k)......i have. friend working in shadowplay a very respectable advert film company who has bought the black magic and is producing stunning results.....however i am aware this is not run and gun (or running smaller rig on a zhiyn crane for example).....im attracted to low light iso of the sony a7sII and low bokeh in full frame....this new gh5s seems to be much more comparable though .....i shot a film on the land speed records in the uk on the gh5 and was impressed how rich the colours are.....ive an old gh4 so have m:43 lenses....im not asking you to make a buying decision for me....just curious of your thoughts as i respect your channel and wisdom.....i shoot with gimbles a lot so not concerned with ibis etc....but i do want two things.....a stunning after post image and...........moveablity......for example i will be shooting a film on the pakistan border with the indian army on camels so steadicam is critical to me......for ages ive been set on the sony a7sII for its low light kingdom.....yet now.....with more options.......choice of buying grows more complex ! be interested to know your thoughts if you feel like responding.....and again......lovely review and footage.....always travel forwards and keep up the great work....best wishes alex ...
Honestly, after having worked on professional shoots this lack of IBIS is not a big deal. Its really not something that I've seen used on the shoots I've worked on. I see how people are angry, but after having read and listened to reviews...this is really a camera for a specific group of people who are probably shooting locked down on a tripod or on a gimbal. However, I am thinking that the lowlight sensor will make its way to GH6 whenever that is released.
As a person interested in first person videos, I was blown away from the rolling shutter performance of this camera. Like say you're shooting your experience in a rollercoaster ride or a train ride, it'll look bliss. For photography, I love street photography, long exposure and a little bit of portrait. I think 10.3Mp is enough for me provided there's not much noise there. How much speed can you go in slow Mo before it kinda gets soft or crops. I believe despite gh5 being capable of 180fps it was better kept at 120fps or below. Is ibis such a big thing for a stills photographer (actually because it is still active even when you deactivate it, doesn't it actually introduce more artefacts)? I have fairly stable hands, I can manage 2 second exposures handheld quite easily on my OnePlus 3 and still get very sharp images (it does have some sort of ois, but it's a phone so it will be limited in implementation anyway). I can even pull 4 seconds handheld at times. I'd be going with nocticron and 12mm summilux, but it's a shame that the summilux lacks ois so I'll need to make my hands more stable.
Hi Denis Sousa, glad you enjoyed the video. Most of the video was shot using the Panasonic 12-35mm & 35-100mm F2.8, then also a couple of shots on the 25mm F1.7, and the 7-14mm F4. Thanks for watching! KH
This is by far the BEST review on Gh5s, From what I see, 1080 @ 240 FPS is not sharp at all, looks more like 720p upscaled to 1080 p. Low Light looks really clean and sharp. How good is it do you think in compare to Sony a6300? I saw the other video on Autofocus and it sucks, Wish they would have taken special care,. in that area. BTW guys I loved all the shots you took. Amazing place. all the best guys..!! Love from INDIA!!
Thanks Harshad, great to hear you found the video useful. Yes at 240fps the image isn't as sharp as say anything from say 200fps and below. Most likely due to sharing the same bitrate throughout all variable frame rates, so much less information available per frame at the higher end, and also the fact the GH5S crops past 200fps means it's not using the full sensor width. That's just based off my experience with using the camera. Thanks for watching - KH
Hi Spencer Stanley, glad you enjoyed the video. Most of it was shot using the Panasonic 12-35mm & 35-100mm F2.8, then also a couple of shots on the 25mm F1.7, and the 7-14mm F4. Thanks for watching! KH
Hi Sindri, glad you enjoyed the video. Most of the video was shot using the Panasonic 12-35mm & 35-100mm F2.8, then also a couple of shots on the 25mm F1.7, and the 7-14mm F4. Thanks for watching! KH
Hey Neil, some of the filming locations were very misty, particularly around bled and the lakes. I think this is the reason for some of that haze. Thanks for watching. KH
ahh I see. The image looks very soft and pleasing. Can't tell the difference anymore of what camera is used by the nice lighting and atmosphere on the landscape shots!
Wow Beautiful video shots, great job. I'll stick with my GH5 for now. I love it especially the in body O.I.S. combined with O.I.S. lenses. I just did a short review after using it for 6 months. I use it for all sorts of projects mostly for my Mavic Pro documentaries on my channel.
Hi Harsh Doshi Visuals - All the audio in the VFR footage was added in post, most of which has been sourced from freesound.org/ - Thanks for watching. KH
Seriously one of the highest quality reviews I’ve seen in a while. Awesome video guys, thanks so much!
Thanks Mac Square, glad you enjoyed the video! KH

Still one of the most beautifully shot camera reviews from you guys. I bought a GH5S in a small part because of this video.
I love how you made this a bit of a travel documentary as well as a review! Nicely done, guys!
Best review I've ever watched! Respect guys!
The has to be one of the most beautiful video reviews I've ever watched! Cheers guys, very professional.
Thanks Roan, great to hear you liked the video. KH

it is a very, very, very good review that you have done. Seriously. Not only helpful, but also beautifully shot and animated. Thumbs up for respect.

Definitely the best Hands-On field test/review of the GH5S and by far! 👏🏻
Beautiful video..... which lenses you used in this video?
Loved this piece. Brilliant work guys!

Great to see you film in my beautiful country :D great review!
It was a pleasure to film there! Thanks for having us ;) KH
the start of this video is stunning, the cinematography is top notch
Thanks Sam, great to hear you enjoyed watching it! KH
Definitely a strong "Philip Bloom" feel. I loved it!
One of the best reviews I've ever seen! Excellent job! Thumbs up and subscribed!
Great review and very nice location in Slovenia!
Beautiful camera, editing, CG, and Slovenia
What lens/es did you shoot with? Great video review. Thanks.
Hi ! Great review. Which camera did you use here 9:32
GH5 :)
Fantastic video.BRAVO
this video helped a lot bro , i have been interested in this camera for some months now reading reviews and this was the best one yet, thank you!!
I am thinking about getting the LUMIX GH5S to upgrade my filmmaking kit. What lens would you recommend with this camera for video?
Panasonic 12-35 F2.8 is my go-to lens - perfect starting point. KH
We don't use AF or IBIS on our productions. This is a great camera and very professional. Like the time code additional.
The greatest thing in your video - the highlight roll off - the harsh glow is gone!! Skies look good again (without having to use a gad ND) - nice work gents!
Good spot Matt, and thanks for the positive comments. KH
Now this is a proper review! Great job!
Best review of the GH5s by far
Thanks Juan, glad you enjoyed it. KH
Best review of a camera I have EVER seen! Well done and thanks a lot for doing it :)
Thanks 21 Fun Street - Glad you enjoyed the video! KH
Gave you a sub as well so you need to keep up the work ;)
Amazing review. I really loved the sounds in the slow motion part
Thank you for great review. Lovely footage.
Great review...and very beautiful video footage..great work
Very thorough and enjoyable review, gentlemen. Great work!
Thanks Rick, glad you enjoyed it. KH
What lenses were used for this video? Amazing quality!
Curious to know as well!
what lens did you use, looks amazing ... I am struggling on what lense to buy... Helppppp
what lens did u buy, and r u happy with it? I'm struggling
Beautiful shots and nice review!

welp, this video made me realize just how boring my life is. Man I need to travel :(
Great Video!
Thanks for watching QB416. I'm sure you're life is great ;) Cheers, KH
Visit Slovenia, we have huge mountains and a great coastline within 100km:)
It's true. I was there last summer and it's one of the most beautiful countries in Europe for sure!
That shot at 0:42 is genuinely breathtaking. I want a wallpaper of that. Any photos of that trip?
A beautifully done review, gentlemen! But one thing bothered me about the image. Whenever there was water, and there was quite a lot of it, there was quite a noticeable judder in the wave action. It looked almost like stop-motion photography. Was that a frame-rate issue or something else?
Removing one of the best thing with the GH5...ibis. Nice then do i not need to think of an upgrade :)
Most pros use a tripod or gimbal, so lack of ibis is not such a deal breaker.
Out of curiosity - can you focus magnify while recording to check focus? You could not on the gh5, curious to see if you can with gh5s
Nice video, but were your lenses or filters fogged up on many shots?
Holy shit, amazing cinematography, like watching the revenant again
Thanks for watching! KH
Great footage and review - did moisture ingress to the optic path at the end of your stay? I noted a substantial haze in your last shot which didn't look like the weather would support it?

DennisDee ...like a slovian girl"?? to ibis or desibis her😉
Thumbs up, thanks, very well done. A big point for me is whether or not the gh5s has better dynamic range vs the gh5? TIA.
These shots are beautiful. I don't know what it is about the Micro 4/3 sensor that makes me fall in love with it.
Thanks for watching Michael - Glad you enjoyed it! KH
Great video, very thorough and informative. And of course beautiful:)

Hey Kriss and Ben! Very much appreciate the awesome vid, but very curious about moire or aliasing issues on the 4k 10bit setting- thoughts?
Great video lads, thanks.

The 240fps looks unusable for professional use at 8:00 the rail looks like a jagged line. I was used to using lens is with my GH4 before going to a GH5 and I really love the IBIS in the GH5. So torn between choosing IBIS or Low Light Sensitivity.
Metabones Speedbooster. It is way cheaper and probably blessed with the same or even better quality on the GH5.
Well done guys! Thank you!
Thanks for watching Jeroen Inch! KH
Hi. Can you please tell what type of tripod you had used where the gh5s was turning around like a circle?
You should say which lens you used. Good review.
Hi Denis Sousa, glad you enjoyed the video. Most of the video was shot using the Panasonic 12-35mm & 35-100mm F2.8, then also a couple of shots on the 25mm F1.7, and the 7-14mm F4. Thanks for watching! KH
This is by far the BEST review on Gh5s,
From what I see, 1080 @ 240 FPS is not sharp at all, looks more like 720p upscaled to 1080 p.
I had the seem 'bad view' for the 240fps, not sharp :( Does anybody knows why?
Apart from that, nice review and amazing place to shoot!
120fps on the a6300 is choppy.
My man from India! Sticking to GH5 for now. Will wait for GH6.

what lens did you use at 6:00?
Curious to the lenses you're using on the GH5S? Amazing B-Roll!
Hi Spencer Stanley, glad you enjoyed the video. Most of it was shot using the Panasonic 12-35mm & 35-100mm F2.8, then also a couple of shots on the 25mm F1.7, and the 7-14mm F4. Thanks for watching! KH
Wex Photo Video awesome! Really appreciate that.
Absolutely incredible review! What lens were you using to record this video?
Hi Sindri, glad you enjoyed the video. Most of the video was shot using the Panasonic 12-35mm & 35-100mm F2.8, then also a couple of shots on the 25mm F1.7, and the 7-14mm F4. Thanks for watching! KH
Great review guys, this has helped me decide on the GH5 as I want to shoot a movie and I believe 6k anamorphic will will be better for that.
Great to hear you found the video useful in making your decision! Thanks for watching. KH
Awesome review. Thanks 👍
Wait, they still use pal in Europe? I thought with HD everyone switched over to a standard. The more you know...
Were you using some kind of filters in the shot like promist or is this haze effect artifact from the lens you mounted?
I'm from Slovenia :D, nice to see you enjoied the wisit. We get a lot of turists from the UK. Can i ask from witch city you are?
How do you have audio in the VFR footage!? Recorded that seperately and added it in!?
Hi Harsh Doshi Visuals - All the audio in the VFR footage was added in post, most of which has been sourced from freesound.org/ - Thanks for watching. KH
