Quick correction! Native ISOs are 400 and 2500 for standard photo styles but 800 and 5000 in LOG. Also, the last test (Aputure M9 at ISO 10,000) was shot on the Panasonic 12-35mm at F2.8. Faster glass would obviously helped lower the ISO level. Just wanted to push the camera without fancy glass.
DSLR Video Shooter hey man.. love the videos.. pretty sure you own Aputure tri 8 and 120d... wondering if you could do a short video comparing output, setup distance, and toughness/portability.. I'm leaning towards the tri 8 but would love your advice.. also i live in wheaton, IL.. currently watching from chicago.. also i recognized your backround music as the Travel Feels channel intro music 😉
Hey! WARNING! I just found someone uploading your videos, the channel name is OK TV and it has a cat in its cover. I made the clame, try to check it out, I fownd it because I was searching for the Kamlan 50mm 1.1.video. I hope this was helpful. By the way I already made the clame to youtube.
@Zack8133 He's already got video reviews of both those lights. He doesn't compare them, but the amount of detail he goes into should help you decide between them.
Do I absolutely need it? Nah, will I get it, probabllyy! HardwareCanucks, love your channel BTW, one of the inspirations for my very own channel, so thank you!
Your review puts even Pansonic's own GH5S information to shame. While everyone else copycats the same old, same old rap about having, not having IBIS, you do your homework on practical results I n real world situations and offer it for free to everyone else. Good job man - thank you for the hard work and intelligent advice.
Caleb your work here is greatly appreciated. Appreciate your thoroughness and attention to detail. Can I reference this in some test videos I am working on?
Decided to watch this video 5years after using the Gh5s and I must say that everything you said on this video holds. It really is a powerful camera. Now I mostly shoot in Vlog profile using either ISO 400 or 2500 depending on light. Great channel, learn a ton of stuff here
I really whish you a lot more subscribers in future. Lots of "click bait" youtubers out there just copying others with nothing new and informative. You do the time and put it all on paper. We love! Keep up, thank you!
Thank you, & echoing the comments of others, it's easy to see that you made a serious effort to structure some really useful tests, the synopsis of your results and impressions + ALL the post-prod work, are noticed and appreciated.
Dude can't wait for the next video talking about the color shift with the new sensor! I've been really wondering about that and no one is talking about it! So thank you for always bringing awesome important content.
Wow great video! Thanks for going into so much detail and showing examples. I wasn't very impressed with the 5S when it first debuted but it really looks like a game changer. It's not a super low light monster like a 7S series but it's the closest thing to a real cinema camera in a sub $3K price range, amazing!
Great and detailed review, Caleb! Waiting for more vids covering GH5s. I want to know if this camera works well with the Metabones and Sigma 18-35. Also, detailed comparison with the GH5 would be awesome! Can't decide if I really need the GH5s or GH5 would be a great new camera for me. Currently, I'm using the G7 with Metabones and Sigma 18-35. Thank you!
I'm finding it comes down the stabilization and 6K anamorphic. If you need the stabilization or shoot a lot of anamorphic, go GH5. Otherwise the image will be better on the GH5s.
One thing about the 6k anamorphic on the Gh5 is that it doesn't allow HDMI out while recording, so monitoring a desqueezed image on the 3inch lcd and getting critical focus is no fun. So comes down to IBIS and 20mp for photography.
Thanks for all your helpful videos! I just picked up a GH5S because of the low light capability. I'm excited to see what it can do. Keep up the great work!
Well that's encouraging. I can't shoot over 1600 on my Gh4 without the image completely falling apart so 2500 being a NATIVE ISO and 12800 still being usable is a MASSIVE jump. Thanks for this vid!
did you hear about the fix to gh5 autofocus?? You have to change your settings to shutter angle then go down from 180 to 179. thats it, now as good as sony and canon! Not sure if its the same with the GH5s
One thing I am yet to see a video about is a side by side DR comparison between the gh5 and 5s. Supposedly +2 stops in the 5s, how does that play out in reality?
I was over on the @Crftsho live stream where we did a live stream today with the GH5 and GH5s (and a RED, because "why not?" right?) side by side and lit with a small light bounced off a china ball floor lamp. It was rushed, but we're pretty sure we saw the +2 stops when shooting at f/2.8 & ISO800.
Honestly, Caleb we should be calling you Professor Pike. Awesome idea to use the scopes to compare the colour shifting. Great comparison. Looking forward to more videos on the GH5s.
Awesome video, Caleb. To me the winning combination for a hybrid shooter is G9 and Gh5s. When you need stabilization, G9 is amazing, even better than GH5, and can be tweaked or hacked easily to some kind of Log footage. And it is significantly better for stills. For all the rest, GH5s.
Great video Caleb. nice background with the red, I'm usually not a fan of red but that looks dope super clean. You just had a grey background paper and threw up a red light hitting the backdrop?
Hey Caleb. Quick question here. I loved this video! Very informative and helpful. I'll certainly be buying this camera through your sponsored link. However, I'm confused by one of your tests. At 6:08, the vector scope shows that the color shift between ISO 400 and 6400 is negligible. Then at 6:29, you show two shots again at 400 and 6400, which show as you said a significant difference in color shift, particularly on your hoodie. And then again at 6:43 you show another side by side of 400 and 6400 where the color shift is negligible again, indicative of what the vector scope initially showed. I cycled back and forth between the two shots at 6:29 and 6:43 to ensure I wasn't just seeing things, but there does seem to be a difference. Am I missing something here? Was there a small error on the listed ISO settings? I'd love to know more about this. Great content as always, and I look forward to seeing more.
Hey Caleb, love your content and your attention to detail!! Just one desperate question: neither the standard picture profiles at 2500 ISO nor the V-LOG profile at ISO 5000 produce acceptable footage on my GH5S. Shooting at FHD 10-bit All-I, need to stick with 60p and 1/125th shutter for smooth real estate shots and was hoping the GH5S of all MFT cameras wouldn't let me down in dark rooms...Am I missing something in the settings? Thanks a lot in advance for any help in this matter :-)
Use a slower shutter speed (1/60) and move the camera more slowly (1/2 speed), then speed back up in post. That way you can drop the ISO to 2500. What is unacceptable about the footage?
Hey buddy have you ever done a video on the horizontal noise issue with the GH5S in VFR with frame rates over 60fps in VLOG? Seems it’s a known issue and Panasonic can’t fix it since it’s a sensor issue. Thoughts?
Great video, I was so waiting for this one! I wonder how much of noise is corrected by software or if the performance stays as impressive in slow motion shots (with less time for software correction or any signal averaging etc)
Wow this is nice video to show strong points of GH5s compared to GH5, thsi can help decide people what they need more, better ISO performance or Stabillized sensor.
Such a conclusive video, fair play! When/If I do buy a GH5s, which if I keep watching your videos I will have to!, then I'll be clicking on that affiliated link.
Man so what really is the native iso for the gh5s. You should do some testing on slow motion with noise both outside and inside in a more dark situation.
at 1:40 we can recognize the intro music of Travel feels. Good thing about those libraries is that they sound pretty good, but you sometime reuse some popular one :p But really nice comparison test. It's really precise and technical!
also what are you using to grade this footage if you edit in FCPX? very interested in adopting this setup to upgrade from my GH4, I also use FCPX and your stuff looks very nice!
Just got this for nightclubs/night shooting and stills in nightclubs with no flash, will see, hopefully it can do just as good or 95% of what my A7s can do as that's a expensive experiment. I also got it for my m.zuiko lenses as you can't get anything Sony FE wise with out being gigantic or 2-3x the price or using the LE-EA4 adapter which adds more weight and awkward handling.
Yes, the very low contrast and saturation footage is LOG, stands for Logarithmic. It's a type of colour profile meant for maximizing dynamic range and colour information while still shooting smaller, compressed files. Kind of like a middle point between a default profile and a RAW video format.
At 4:20 - ISO 6400 on the GH5S looks very soft compared to the earlier shots. Is something else going on here, or is there quite noticeable degradation from the camera's noise reduction?
Great work and great reviews ! Keep it up! Question, I personally own Gh5s and love the camera. Very practical and versatile. However, I have been experiencing a lot of noise with it when shooting in V-Log especially in the shadows but even in the lit background. Not fun when you can see the noise in the negative fill on the subjects face. Have you had similar experience? If I try to edit V-Log in premier the footage is terrible but if I do it in DaVinci it's so much better. Thank you
Thanks for the video. Higher ISO's certainly look clean, but there is a significant (IMHO) loss in detail. Can't remember if you own an a6500 but would love to see any comparisons between them for noise, resolution, DR and color at higher ISOs.
I know this is 2 weeks old, but if you want to support him, you can click any of his Amazon links, then just search for what you want and buy it from Amazon. He will get a commission on anything you purchase from Amazon within 30 days of you clicking on his affiliate link. The light is an Aputure M9. I have two of them and they're awesome.
Hi. This was a great informative video. Have you got the link or info on where I can get that small hand light you are holding. I'm excited about the GH5s and using it as a invisible filmmaking tool
Thanks for another great video Caleb. Have you played with shutter speeds on the GH5s? Specifically asking about shutter drag. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this was possible with the GH4 and I *think* it was with the GH5. It it still so with the GH5s? Thanks!
Just a quick correction. This was confirmed by sean robinson of Panasonic that When shooting the log profiles the native isos are not 400 amd 2500. For vlogl and HLG the native isos is 800 and 5000.
Your welcome. Here's a link to the spec sheets, which also shows the 2nd set of native ISOs: www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer/cameras-camcorders/lumix-g-compact-system-cameras/dc-gh5s.specs.html
Hello! Wonderful review! I need some advice on GH5S. Once the pandemic is over I intent to use GH5S with extremely wide angle lens to recordin a church live choral-orchestral concert that I also perform in. I am thinking about GH5S because it will give me unlimited recording time, 10-bit 4.2.2 footage that is good enough right from the camera, as well as wider FoV on C4K and better low-light capability. What is a problem is a lens choice. I was thinking about using Canon EF lens for APS-C with 0.71x speedbooster for instance Sigma 10-20 f/3.5. But after what I have seen on GH5 i got afraid. It was not me who take pictures and the footage so I couldn't tweak it but on 4:3 stills there was monumental vignette at wide open as well as some chromatic aberration. On graded UHD footage not so much, although I don't know if it wasn't removed in post. But GH5S has multi-aspect sensor. By your experience, what can I expect on GH5S? I am going to need it wide open and as wide as possible. Maybe I should just forget speedboosted Canon APS-C lens and just use native lens?
Your videos are excellent - thanks for such clearly presented info. I have both the GH5 and GH5s, and have finally just tried V-Log L on the GH5s. I can only find a Panasonic VLogL_to_V709_forGH5_ver100_EN file, but none for the GH5s. Do you know if there is one specifically for the GH5s? I'm only shooting wildlife outdoors, but if you know of a better LUT for that purpose I would appreciate the info. Thanks!
Thnx for that, it was super insightful! Have you done any testing with V-Log in low light? I’m about to buy a GH5s and my editor is also a super big color grading buff and likes to have as much Log footage as possible. I would like to know how far I could rise the ISO with V-Log especially in shadow rich areas. How much color shift and noise is there in dimly lit situations at 2500 and 3200 when shooting V-Log?
Ok, almost every review misses the fact that in V-LogL the native ISOs are 800 and 5000 which is a stop difference and they should provide you with best dynamic range and noise level. But it means it requires ND filters even on a cloudy day if you want to use shallower DoF. Can you do some tests to see the difference among ISO settings, how much of DR you are losing if not on 800 ISO? And how much noisier these images are?
Ok so i found when shooting VFR mode(100fps+) in vlog on gh5s, only use iso: 1250,1600 and 2000. If you want to shoot cina D only use iso:640,800 and 1000. If your using the normal profiles dont go below 640 to avoid those nasty horizontal noise.
I would definitely go with the GH5S for its low light performance but I would need to buy a stabiliser of some kind as well. So I’m having to go with the GH5. Such a shame but I hope the standard GH5 is going to be good at most things.
Hey Caleb, you talked about colour, but you didn't talk about softness... ISO 2500 is softer than 400 and 6400 is 1080p even though you're shooting 4K. It may be due to the noise reduction applied, what you think???
Hey Caleb, does that mean if I buy the guide now, that I will be able to down load the new section when it is released, or how will that work, thanks again for all the cool & not so fun stuff you do for us! It is all appreciated!
Hey Caleb, thanks as always for your educational and helpful approach. I really appreciate your content since years. I have the following question: What is the Native ISO of the GH5s when shooting ProRes RAW externally on the Atomos Ninja V? Is it the same like when shooting V-log? Kind regards, Philip
Nice video Caleb! I saw in your comparison that 2500 iso has less noise than 640 up to 2000, but what about image quality, would you say that instead of going to 640 (if I need to) is better to go to 2500 and I will get better results both for image quality and less noise?
Quick correction! Native ISOs are 400 and 2500 for standard photo styles but 800 and 5000 in LOG.
Also, the last test (Aputure M9 at ISO 10,000) was shot on the Panasonic 12-35mm at F2.8. Faster glass would obviously helped lower the ISO level. Just wanted to push the camera without fancy glass.

I'm leaning towards the tri 8 but would love your advice.. also i live in wheaton, IL.. currently watching from chicago.. also i recognized your backround music as the Travel Feels channel intro music 😉
Caleb... Would you recommend the GH5s over the GH5 for a UA-cam studio?
Hey! WARNING! I just found someone uploading your videos, the channel name is OK TV and it has a cat in its cover. I made the clame, try to check it out, I fownd it because I was searching for the Kamlan 50mm 1.1.video. I hope this was helpful. By the way I already made the clame to youtube.
Where did you find information about ISO800 and 5000? I thought it was 400 and 2500 :)
@Zack8133 He's already got video reviews of both those lights. He doesn't compare them, but the amount of detail he goes into should help you decide between them.
Dude such a good comparison! Seriously considering a GH5s to join my Panasonic army.
HardwareCanucks I watch your channel a lot but I'm not sure if you would need the lowlight capability?
Do I absolutely need it? Nah, will I get it, probabllyy! HardwareCanucks, love your channel BTW, one of the inspirations for my very own channel, so thank you!
Thanks :)

Agreed. Only on tests like this you can really see whats all about. Thanks Caleb.

Switch to iso 800 and 5000 when I'm Vlog. That's the native ISO's in vlog
You are the god of comparisons.
Love this video, really appreciate all the time you spent researching, testing and putting this together!
I really whish you a lot more subscribers in future. Lots of "click bait" youtubers out there just copying others with nothing new and informative. You do the time and put it all on paper. We love! Keep up, thank you!
Thanks Marko!
V-LOG has a different native ISO according to the Panasonic spec sheet. 800/5000
Maybe one of the best and most useful videos about the GH5s. Great job. Thanks !!
“For more fun then a cow tipping” Caleb Pike 2018
wow i have not heard the term cow tipping in years right on
Your review is one of the best I have heard of. Simple, easy to understand data and straight to the point to drawn your own conclusion.
So thank you for always bringing awesome important content.
great tnx
Thanks, Caleb!
Awesome... thank you! Very helpful and way more detailed than a lot of other reviews. If we end up adding this camera, we'll use your link.
Thanks for making a specific video for GH5S!
Great look at the GH5s, can't wait to pickup my own!
Appreciate all the hard work ur doing caleb, ur like person to go to when it comes to super complicated video photo light and camera stuff
Caleb, what a great review on the GH5s!
Insane performance!
Thanks for the sober and thoughtful information on the GH5s Caleb after all the hysteria.
THE GH5s has come a long way with regards to shooting in low light. Great video
Great review, just picked up the GH5s to accompany my GH5. Please, more reviews on the GH5s in detail will greatly be appreciated.
Best GH5S review on YT. Period.
Wow, that's pretty good. I should be ordering mine in the next week or two. Seems to be a great addition to my GH5.
Oh man! That GH5S is a beast! Awesome video!
Yes please do MORE GH5s Videos!!!
Framing/cropping and image size tests and comparisons would be awesome. vs full frame and how Cinematic can it get?
Well that's encouraging. I can't shoot over 1600 on my Gh4 without the image completely falling apart so 2500 being a NATIVE ISO and 12800 still being usable is a MASSIVE jump. Thanks for this vid!
I hear ya! Still use my GH4 and it is noisy at almost every level.
It's actually bigger in Vlog and HLG. In log profiles the Higher native ISO is 5,000 same as the Varicam cameras.
Really like the new red tones on the background, looks great!
Thanks Ethan!
did you hear about the fix to gh5 autofocus?? You have to change your settings to shutter angle then go down from 180 to 179. thats it, now as good as sony and canon! Not sure if its the same with the GH5s
Only works on 25fps or more - so 24fps is a no go for this. :(
Tommy Callaway it works on 24 as well
I heard it doesn't do much for 24fps which is where my cameras live.
no yodayeo on youtube got it working with 3rd party lenses too
From 25fps up...Guys above are right... Unfortunatelly...
That was the most informative video I ever saw about camera!!! :)
GREAT video! These are the kinds of technical comparisons that I really need when making buying decisions for my business. THANK YOU.
I was feeling pretty negative about this thing. But seeing what you just showed, man that is nicer than I expected. I have some thinking to do.
I hear ya! Still a shame about the IBIS, but this coupled with a gimbal = winning.
I recently picked up a Zhiyun Crane. That is why suddenly this thing came back into my field of view.
Honestly, Caleb we should be calling you Professor Pike. Awesome idea to use the scopes to compare the colour shifting. Great comparison. Looking forward to more videos on the GH5s.
Why thank you kind sir!
Thanks so much for this video Caleb! I'm really considering adding the S to my camera bag!
Overall great test procedure, well and detailed explained.
Superbly done, thank you.
Super video Caleb. Your setup looks so good. What log format do you shoot within your GH5?
Great information. Very Comprehensive testing
Great video Caleb. nice background with the red, I'm usually not a fan of red but that looks dope super clean. You just had a grey background paper and threw up a red light hitting the backdrop?
Thanks! The backdrop is white with a red RGB light.
Hey Caleb. Quick question here.
I loved this video! Very informative and helpful. I'll certainly be buying this camera through your sponsored link. However, I'm confused by one of your tests. At 6:08, the vector scope shows that the color shift between ISO 400 and 6400 is negligible. Hey Caleb, love your content and your attention to detail!! Just one desperate question: neither the standard picture profiles at 2500 ISO nor the V-LOG profile at ISO 5000 produce acceptable footage on my GH5S. Use a slower shutter speed (1/60) and move the camera more slowly (1/2 speed), then speed back up in post. That way you can drop the ISO to 2500. What is unacceptable about the footage?
Great job as usual
That was really interesting and well done!
Hey buddy have you ever done a video on the horizontal noise issue with the GH5S in VFR with frame rates over 60fps in VLOG? Seems it’s a known issue and Panasonic can’t fix it since it’s a sensor issue. Thoughts?
It's incredible how far we've come from the GH4...I remember not even being able to go to 1250 on it without it looking like shit
Spot on! Thanks!
Great video, I was so waiting for this one! I wonder how much of noise is corrected by software or if the performance stays as impressive in slow motion shots (with less time for software correction or any signal averaging etc)
Are you still gonna do that video on GH5s color science and skin tones? Cant wait to see it...
Holy crap. That test with the M9 blew me away. Gah My GH5s cant get here fast enough!
Wow this is nice video to show strong points of GH5s compared to GH5, thsi can help decide people what they need more, better ISO performance or Stabillized sensor.

Oh nice! Artlist.io for the win!
Yea I'll often use a track in a video then a week or two later hear someone like Peter Mckinnon use it. Just makes me chuckle.
haha yeah,
I try as much as possible to use my own songs but it's a lot of additional work.
DSLR Video Shooter I love it! Use it all the time!
i also commented on the same song lol.. glad to see others know about travel feels.. some many great video/photo channels lately
Really looking forward to that color video, since no one is really picking up on that...
also what are you using to grade this footage if you edit in FCPX? very interested in adopting this setup to upgrade from my GH4, I also use FCPX and your stuff looks very nice!
How does the A6500 compare in low light to the gh5s?
Super! I LOVE GH5s! :)
Good test!
How can anyone thumbs down this video? Dorks!
Does the TravelFeels music in the background hint at an upcoming collaboration maybe?
Awrange I thought I was losing my mind lol I'm so glad I'm not the only one who heard it!
Ha! Unfortunately no. Just grabbed a license from Artlist.io and I guess it is the same track he uses!
I really hope not. Can't stand that click bait channel. Rather watch this guy 10 times over
Oh, I didn't know you could change the Iso steps... I thougt I was stuck with 200, 400 and so on steps. Well now I do
Totally new to color grading and shooting in LOG. At 08:40 - is that comparison a before/after grading?

excellent video! do you have a link to buy that light? (hopefully one you get a commission on, great work!)

Hi. This was a great informative video. Have you got the link or info on where I can get that small hand light you are holding. I'm excited about the GH5s and using it as a invisible filmmaking tool
what kind of stand are you using to hold your 4x4 diffuse?
I'm sold.
Thank you James! Added a pinned comment.
Your welcome. Here's a link to the spec sheets, which also shows the 2nd set of native ISOs: www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer/cameras-camcorders/lumix-g-compact-system-cameras/dc-gh5s.specs.html
does it have a 2:35:1 grid in camera?
Yes it has in Menu > Custom > Monitor/Display > Video Guide Line and you will find it :)
Very Nice...
How does the ISO performance of a6300/6500 stack up against the GH5s? Weren't the sony cameras much better than GH5 in low light.
I'd like to see the lowlight comparison between the Sony a7 series and the GH5S!
Damn. The GH5s holds up so well..
Hey Caleb, you talked about colour, but you didn't talk about softness... ISO 2500 is softer than 400 and 6400 is 1080p even though you're shooting 4K. It may be due to the noise reduction applied, what you think???
Are you planning on doing a GH5s video guide like you did for the GH5? I would love one, thanks!
I'll be adding a GH5s section to the current GH5 guide!
Hey Caleb, does that mean if I buy the guide now, that I will be able to down load the new section when it is released, or how will that work, thanks again for all the cool & not so fun stuff you do for us! It is all appreciated!
Yep! All GH5 guide owners will get the updated section for free :-)
Sir Pike , thanks bud!
What was the name of that light you had? Where can I find it? Thanks!
Hey Caleb,
thanks as always for your educational and helpful approach. I really appreciate your content since years. I have the following question: What is the Native ISO of the GH5s when shooting ProRes RAW externally on the Atomos Ninja V? Is it the same like when shooting V-log?
Kind regards, Philip
could you make a video for recording times on different settings? like 4k 422 400 bit vs 1080p 422 etc? no one else has this info yet
Nice video Caleb! I saw in your comparison that 2500 iso has less noise than 640 up to 2000, but what about image quality, would you say that instead of going to 640 (if I need to) is better to go to 2500 and I will get better results both for image quality and less noise?
i would be curious what you think of the G9... compare to GH4. Thank you if you can help with that matter
Hi, Caleb! I just wandred if you could make an episone on the røde videomicro. It would be really helpfull😀
