- BMW Swirl Flap removal from a BMW 525d E60 in simple easy steps. In This video I show you how to remove your swirl flaps and install replacement upgraded blanking plates. Swirl flaps are very problematic and can cause huge engine failure to your car. I hope you enjoy the video, thank you for watching.

BMW swirl flaps commonly fail in such a way that they either: drop an affixing screw and or the upper section of the spindle. If this does not stop the engine, the remaining swirl flap falling completely into the engine will! The outcome of such failure is not pretty in the slightest.Luckily this problem is easy to correct by simply removing the swirl flaps. That means both inlet manifold tracts are constantly open. The result: no perceived difference in performance or fuel consumption and cleaner running due to the elimination of ‘dead spots' in the inlet tract.

What a great DIY video! I do not have much experience with mechanics but with your guide I will definetly be doing this! Very well done Mate!👍
Thats one of the best tutorial videos I've seen for swirl-flaps, just off to order the blanks for my '08 530d. Great stuff, thank you.
Brilliant video ..one of the best tutorials I've seen for this job .
Great diy tutorial video, just recently bought a E61 525D and will have a go my removing these swirl flaps.
Excellent video, very calm and informational explanation. Saved for later when I replace my flaps. Thanks.
Very explanatory post, thank you. Wanted to do this while I changed my glow plugs, and glow relay. Worth a view
One of the best DIY videos I have ever seen
after following this step by step i managed to do the swirl flap blanking myself all with limited tools just need to get hold of the bmw hex type screw drivers before doing the job,it really is as simply as shown here
So good to see you making videos again man! always enjoyed your stuff! keep it up bud
finally a decent video on youtube...been waiting for this. looks easy too, will have a go in the morning
Nice video man. You got good angles of everything you did and you showed everything going back together. I would be confident having a go at doing this because of your video. 💯
So glad it helped you
Top lad! Awesome videos, really helpful and you made me laugh so even better.
Subscribed and looking forward to more videos!
Keep it up dude!
Great video, you have a very good way of talking mate, thanks a lot for the clarity.
Great Vid thanks, really clear, well explained and excellent advice throughout !
My BMW has 125k miles recorded. After watching your video I had enough confidence to do the job myself and it was all done and dusted within 2 hours. No special tools were needed.and it's all thanks to your DIY tutorial.
Thinking about it afterwards, perhaps 6 new complete units should have been installed instead of just blanks as the EGR system will be severely compromised without the manifold depression created by the flaps restricting incoming air at idle and on overrun. That said the engine certainly sounds crisper and seems to pick up smoother.
Thanks again for your guidance
You are welcome, I am.glad it helped you
Hi David. What do you mean? Also what if you did an EGR delete? Have you had issues in the last year?

Yes i though i was seeing things! just putting blanks in and removing flaps completely. This could well mess up EGR settings. If i do job i will put in new flaps.
David Hall does this save your engine or just tune it up some? Confused just bought same thing you have
Thank you for a very good instructional video. Just the right amount of information, quality video and everything is quite clear. Thanks again. :)
Thank you so informative and helpful. I just bought a 2011 335D. 9/13/19. Yes Friday the 13th lol. And I can't wait to install this delete and the egr delete

Good video man! Wish all youtube videos were like that.
Great tutorial, man! Could you do next one about how to bypass EGR valve which can also cause problems after some time?
What a well explained brilliant video..thank you
Good description of the task , thanks
Top video BMAC VAGS, excellent. Will do it on my 320D E46 2003 as well. Do you by any chance where i can order those blanks you used on the swirl flaps holes? Much aprecciated
Spot on. Thanks for posting this.
Very good mate! I think the Astra F SRI 150's give swirl flap problems too
Excellent, thanks very much. Michael (NZ)
I have a 535d e60, thank you a lot for your tutorial, it's my turn now, let's go.
The Job is done, everything works correctly, thanks !
really good video! thanks
GREAT videos ...good job
Brilliant video!
Thanks for the video. Very helpful but on reassembly, did you leave the vacuum in situ and intact, so it was just the flaps and their operating rods that were removed? If so, can we assume that the vacuum unit would operate normally as if the rod was still there so there would be no loss of vacuum?
Thank's for the video man I love you keep up
that's proper clear ,well explained video, very helpful.Think I will try to attempt to do it myself on e39 530d, it should be very similar isn't ? was really scared to fuck up something, but seems not too difficult . Would e39 defo be similar just to make sure?
Great DIY man! Thx! My inlet manifold leaks oil.. according to mech. Can I solve this with new orange gaskets?
excellent tutorial keep on rolling man
johnny mckenna Do you have a BMW?

Great video, helped a lot ;-) thank you
Great video buddy this is my weekend job.... Wish me luck 👌
Hey. I know this is 4 years on from your comment but how did it go? Looking at removing mine on the weekend
Brilliant video!! In the rain as well. I'm about to do this job, and also change the glow plug plugs. My car has no power under 2k revs so thinking about changing the swirl flaps actuator . Have you come across this issue before? No power at all under 2k even a 1.1 micra can do me at the lights :(
Thanks for the video ! I’m going to remove mine before I have a smash up ! . Any idea what the purpose of those things are for , is it to aid combustion? Cheers bruce
I like to see you making more videos daily
Excellent video man
Thank you

Good video. I'm going to do mine while I'm not using the car as much due to loss of power...blpody dpf is full going to do a egr delete while I'm there I think
Hello mate its Amazing video i gave e60 530d msport same color with your when i star Thé after couple of minutes engine shaking and lacking but when engine getting warm everything finish whatever area youtube thinking is that's swirilp flap fault THX for help
Hey great video! Is this the same on the 2008 335d? Does it not need to be deleted from the computer as well?
Great video. Thanks.
Very good video 👍
Brilliant. Thank you!
Hi, what did you do with that vacume ? I mean, did you conected it again to electric plug ? so after removal of the flaps it blows air somewhere beside the engine ? or is it not connected to any electricity so after removal of the flaps it doesn't work at all ?thanks ;)
Nice video i just picked up a 2008 E61 m sport do you know if this model has the swirl flaps?
Brilliant tutorial, will give any ham-fisted bloke like me enough confidence to do the job by themselves!!!
Great job. Thanks
Fantastic vid
Glad you enjoyed it
First class video, thanks
+Barry Webster no problem
Barry Webster
Very helpful thanks
Nice video dude, would this be the same for a 1 series engine? Thanks
Hi, Nice video thank you 👍
enjoyed this nice work,
+XTOMMYPX Thank You
Hey, I've just managed to remove my swirl flaps and everything went smooth and as expected apart from some fucked up reinforcement transversal bar bolts which BMW left me completly stripped!
On your video you are not sure if you have to remove the bar but I can say you'll need to because you can't take out the back motor cover to access back intake manifold screw.
Keep up with your great videos! :)
BTW, I have a 530d with the M57N2 engine. My intake manifold can't come out without removing the injectors :)
In Poland we have alternative solution to remove swirl flaps: remanufactured swirl flaps which have improved construction (bigger shaft size, new seals, aluminum plates and brass levers)

what you do with the vacuum pipe for the swirl flaps. just blank it or what because I seen you put the the vacuum controller for flaps back on.
thanks Shane
Nice job
Any wrong feeling after removing flaps? Less mpg or dead spots on low rpm area?
Top video, top bloke.
Very nice video , now time for my beemer to cut out this liltle flaps , im going to make it by my self , its all right on use vaseline to this gasket ? Bless up mate 🤜🤛
Hi ,
Can I learn what size are tiny screws on swirl flap ?
What torx wrench can I remove them by ?
Nice bro good jobb
So replacing them with the blanks doesn't change anything other than the pitch of the turbo? No performance downgrade whatsoever?
I have a 335d touring E91 and just had swirl flaps removed and blanking plates put on. Ive noticed straight away the difference with engine power has dropped. Is this something that should be expected. I miss the engine performance before I had the job done.
I've watched quite a few videos on this subject recently but this is a nice and simple, easy to follow guide. By far the best yet. However, my question/thoughts are.... BMW designed the swirl flaps for a reason. They help a clean, efficient combustion as low rpm and throttle, and therefore a better throttle response and power/torque at low rpm (as well as improved efficiency). Look up "what do swirl flaps do" on UA-cam.
So, instead of spending money on a delete kit, I plan on removing, cleaning and using a cheap solution of Loctite on the swirl flap screw threads. That way, I retain the original fluid dynamic design of the smarty pants engineers at BMW, without compromising the longevity of the engine. For reference, I have a BEng in Automotive Engineering and so these are my 2 pennies on the subject. If my E90 engine dies after this cheap mod, I'll call back here, tail between legs to let you know.
My grandfather was a fantastic diesel mechanic (should have been an engineer but no chance of a tertiary education) and he always told me 'someone a lot smarter than you or I went to a lot of effort and and time to design and incorporate that into this car, if it didn't need it, it wouldn't be there' . I often think about that when I'm tempted to mod a vehicle.
I'm currently dealing with a 530d that has had huge problems (DPF mainly) due to someone deleting the EGR without coding it out properly. I've just found they removed and threw away the vacuum can for the swirl flaps too when they did the delete...
@@adamwest1138 I hope you get your problem fixed. There's far too many cowboy mods online that fix one problem and create 10 others!
There's a reason that people look for clean, unmodified cars.
In the video when you was removing connections from the manifold you unclipped an item that you was not sure what it did. Its the egr vacuum solinoid. I'm trying to find out where the two line run as I have one off mine and carnt figure out where it connects. Thanks in advance
Informative. Thank you!
I just bought a 2002 320D touring has about 236k not looking to do anything crazy to the car just clean and maintenance. Is there anything else I need to look pay attention to or replace. Also maybe some sites to order from or find more info to research more in depth. Any help is appreciated.
Would I have to re code this after the swirl flap delete? You didn't mention that in the video... Did you have any issue with engine light or code after delete without that procedure?
thank you man :)
iv got a 08 plate 2.5d , 3series coupe , is it the same principle with my model aswel?
Great video mate, really helpful for DIY! I am going to change my glow plugs whilst I am doing the swirl flaps on my 2009 530d do I need to disconnect the battery before doing these jobs? If so will this cause any issues with the idrive and car settings? Really appreciate your help and reply! Wazza
You actually need to disconnect your battery before start doing that. Because you will unplug your injectors's wires. And that will not damage your iDrive system.
i have bmw e60 525d 177 2006 2.5 6cyl. I want to order this kit. my car has 32mm or 22 mm flaps? thank you
Can I run this on a 2011 BMW E90 335D North America with the stock factory ECU software tune?
hi does the bmw x5 e53 2006 3.0D have swirl flaps thanks..
Hi what do you do with the vacuum and sensor left it off and sensor unplugged?
Makes my E21 look so simple and easy to work on..
Hi is this the same perseageure for a 2004 bmw e60 530d
Brilliant video.... is the kit in you link suitable for the 2007 520D? My engine looks like yours!
Keep up the good work!
The 520d have smaller blanking plugs. Would you like me to find you a link?
@@BMACVAGS thankyou but its ok.... i just wanted to check... hhave found some that are apparently right at 22mm! Cheers
