You don't have the fins because someone removed them and it's not good for the engine, you lose torque and above all the engine needs mapping in the control unit.
Good video - best degreaser for this is Screwfix non nonsense heavy duty degreaser. It is about £10 for 5litres. It eats oil and grease and is water soluble. It will remove all that stuff easily and better than any soapy degreaser. Im just a bit concerned that all that water will get into sensors on the body of those electrical control valves. I would let mine dry out overnight in a warm room ( kitchen!!) Soak the seals in tis stuff and it will clean them like you would not believe!! no solvents in it either just surfactants.
I bought a 2nd hand inlet manifold to replace one on my 320d where the brass rod had worked its way out into the engine bay!! The new one was filthy, but I used a gorilla tub, and loads of really hot water with a few cups of Daz washing power, and just left it to soak in the gorilla tub for a few hours then flushed with a hose and repeated the process... Automatic washing powder is fantastic at removing grease at those temperatures ;-))

Great video mate, going to do this on my E90 320D (M47) did you mask off the electrical connectors on the manifold or just pressure washed it and let it dry? Also how long would you let the manifold dry for before reinstalling?
Well Done I like your videos. Its a kinda companionship on a lonesome dirty job that i have to do. I think that stuff is a mix of oil and carbon. Did you find where the oil is coming from ? Like turbo or crankcase breather? how is it now ?
Anti shudder valves stop the engine from shuddering when it shuts off. It’s only wide open when you start the engine and closes shut when you switch it off. Does not work like a throttle body👍🏻
@@GeorgeAusters Well thats a new one for me! I've owned a handful of diesel cars and none of them had this. Got a 330d now as well and pretty sure it doesn't have one of these. Wonder why they started fitting them as it just seems like another electronic thing to potentially go wrong IMO.
Can this affect power/performance almost like turbo lag symptoms? I had a 320d n47 remapped and I'm sure it's lagging in power over the last 14 months slightly
Absolutely, just take off the engine cover, remove the MAP sensor on your inlet manifold either 10m hex bolt or T30 torx holding it - there should be a hole in the sensor, this usually gets totally blocked when the manifold needs cleaning - be careful cleaning the sensor hole and don't push anything in too hard, just clear it out and the hole in the manifold until you get a chance to clean it. I use caustic soda, it's the best way by far with no messy hands - follow George's instructions for stripping down the manifold then just soak, jet wash, soak, jet wash, soak, jet wash - looks like it just came out the factory, far superior clean than solvents and you won't smell of petrol. Need a large tub big enough to submerge the entire manifold, 500 grams caustic soda and somewhere to jet wash it clean. Do it on every timing chain job and my customers love it, especially if it's badly blocked because they can really feel the performance improvement - seen manifolds with less than 30% airflow they're that badly blocked.
Hi, unfortunately the intake manifold doesn't get cleaned from air flow alone. Your DPF get's cleaned from continuous driving because it gets hot enough to do a regeneration
After you had jet washed it, should have sealed it up and filled with Mr muscle oven cleaner foam. Eats away at the crap for the last jet wash to make it shine like new inside
You used to be able to get a reinforced one from Germany for around £170 including shipping but they've stopped shipping to the UK after Brexit due to the increased cost of exporting to the UK. If you look on eBay you might be able to get them to ship out of you can negotiate fees for shipping and all of the extra paperwork they need to do now
My brass rod snapped and came out of the actuator gotta get the manifold out and see what's up...only new to bmw myself bought a 08 320d e90... this is all I need..if the flaps havent fallin in am I ok to blank as I've not the money to fix that..
I like how you take good care of your n47 and have gained quite some knowledge around this very effective yet dynamic engine I don’t want to be too much of a German here... Have you rinsed the intake manifold on the street? I don’t know if it’s legal in Britain or not. But with this kind of behavior you wil ruin a substantial amount of drinking water (every drop of mineral oil spoils about a 1000 liters of fresh water.) Please consider doing this kind of work in a Facility with a wastewater Filter System. Thank your very much and keep the great n47 content coming! :)
@@GeorgeAusters Yeah kind of had no choice, I already paid £150 to get my car towed there as it does not start. @@herobo123456 cheers buddy, actually, I cleaned and it turned out the message was related to a DPF sensor and I replaced it took me 10 minutes and bought only for 10 pounds and saved probably 500 GBP so no thank you I won't give it to a trained mechanic to rip me off :)
do you still have to reset the adaptation after cleaning on bmw E models, or is it not important?
No
Will deleting the EGR help clear the carbon because of the higher temp?
You won’t have carbon in your intake anymore
@@GeorgeAusters thanks George! So no need to get a chemical clean and EGR delete at the same time theh
The best stuff I have found is TFR left to soak on these inlets , they literally come out like new , I always block the egr so I dont have to redo it
@Sven Mathieu small price to pay to keep inlets clear of sooty oily shit smothering the breathing , its horses for courses
Steve is this traffic Film Remover (do you have a brand) also do you use it neat ? Thanks
Would u recommend cleaning this even tho theres been an egr delete on the car?
If it hasn’t already been done yes
Happy thanksgiving
Great video mate, going to do this on my E90 320D (M47) did you mask off the electrical connectors on the manifold or just pressure washed it and let it dry? Also how long would you let the manifold dry for before reinstalling?
There is only a MAP sensor on this manifold which I removed. Manifold doesn't need to be bone dry, as long as it doesnt have puddles of water in.
Where are u from, i want the egr delete ki
Well Done I like your videos. Its a kinda companionship on a lonesome dirty job that i have to do.
I think that stuff is a mix of oil and carbon. Did you find where the oil is coming from ? Like turbo or crankcase breather? how is it now ?
Appreciate that. The oil is normal. It’s from crankcase breather.
You cud just take your car down to pmp cars nuneaton. £250 for a walnut blast and manifold power wash, well worth it
oven foam cleaner works very well
Yeah so i've heard!
Whats the best way to dry it out???
Doesn't need to be air dry
How many miles did this engine have on it when you cleaned it up George?
120,000
I have never heard of an "anti shudder valve" before... It looks just like a throttle body to me! What exactly does it do?
Anti shudder valves stop the engine from shuddering when it shuts off. It’s only wide open when you start the engine and closes shut when you switch it off.
Does not work like a throttle body👍🏻
@@GeorgeAusters Well thats a new one for me! I've owned a handful of diesel cars and none of them had this. Got a 330d now as well and pretty sure it doesn't have one of these. Wonder why they started fitting them as it just seems like another electronic thing to potentially go wrong IMO.
Your 330d DOES have an anti shudder valve. No diesels have throttle bodies👍🏻
Main purpose is to close off air intake to prevent a diesel runaway.
Another UK channel sent it to the ultrasonic cleaners. Looked like new after. No idea what it cost...
How much would a garage charge for this? I'm not mechanical minded so wouldn't be confident doing it myself
Hard to say really as it can take hours to clean. It's pretty much just all labour.
this is easily a 5 hour job. All labour and only 30 quid for new gaskets. Did it today and spent the whole day :)))
Would this be the same for the b47 engine??
Very similar
How do you fix cracked adjuster unit?
Mine is broken too. oil mist comes out from there. That's why I think there is a bad smell inside the car.
Intake manifold needs replaced
@@GeorgeAusters what you said broke my heart ahahahaha thanks bro. Greetings from Turkey.
Should also do a video on cleaning egr
Already removed lol
Quick question
I drive in Germany a lot sometime full throttle I’ve done 140mphfor more then 1 hour do you think this was cleaned out by itself
Hi, unfortunately the intake manifold doesn't get cleaned from air flow alone. Your DPF get's cleaned from continuous driving because it gets hot enough to do a regeneration
George Austers so you saying the only way to clean is by taking it out and physically clean it ?
That is correct my friend👍🏻
George Austers my bmw has 130k miles how often do you think it should be cleaned
@@hidri86 I think now is a good time
Would you recommend heating it up in oven beforehand? Low temp
No I would not lol. I wouldn’t recommend putting any heat onto the plastic manifold at all👍🏻
Is this even a serious question? LOL
As funny as it may seem, heating up the intake manifold for cleaning is actually a pretty common thing, but only on the cast iron ones👍🏻
@@GeorgeAusters That would make sense yes! However not a plastic one..
Jean Claude Bezzina what and the manifold stays cold when engine is hot can’t do it much harm can it
After you had jet washed it, should have sealed it up and filled with Mr muscle oven cleaner foam. Eats away at the crap for the last jet wash to make it shine like new inside
Will remember that for next time cheers mate
I gave you the 'like' number 1.000 :)
Thanks!
Buttttttttt..................how do you clean the intake valves with this method?
Bravo zio
Do you need diagnostic tools to start car after it is reassembled?
Nope
Thanks
@@subdigital. hi did your car start straight up
How much is a new intake manifold
You used to be able to get a reinforced one from Germany for around £170 including shipping but they've stopped shipping to the UK after Brexit due to the increased cost of exporting to the UK. If you look on eBay you might be able to get them to ship out of you can negotiate fees for shipping and all of the extra paperwork they need to do now
Great video mate..
Cheers mate
My brass rod snapped and came out of the actuator gotta get the manifold out and see what's up...only new to bmw myself bought a 08 320d e90... this is all I need..if the flaps havent fallin in am I ok to blank as I've not the money to fix that..
I like how you take good care of your n47 and have gained quite some knowledge around this very effective yet dynamic engine
I don’t want to be too much of a German here...
Have you rinsed the intake manifold on the street? I don’t know if it’s legal in Britain or not. But with this kind of behavior you wil ruin a substantial amount of drinking water (every drop of mineral oil spoils about a 1000 liters of fresh water.)
Please consider doing this kind of work in a Facility with a wastewater Filter System.
Thank your very much and keep the great n47 content coming! :)
Everything was cleaned up so no need to worry👍🏻
How about deleting the swirl flap?
Made a video on the swirl flaps bud: ua-cam.com/video/Q2ejm-D-IDQ/v-deo.html
Next day.. how do change cracked intake
Cracked intake?
Сажа легко смывается каустической содой
Very good video, now i know, thank you
No problem buddy!
Try oven cleaner next time, it really eats away all the layers of gunk, mine is now next to nothing, really pleased with it tbh
Yeah watch my intake manifold cleaning video👍🏻
Garage quoted me 2k to 'replace' my EGR valve and my Inlet manifold... for my BMW 420D
Madness
@@GeorgeAusters Yeah kind of had no choice, I already paid £150 to get my car towed there as it does not start. They said both egr valve and the swirl flaps in manifold are faulty so both need to be replaced. Total cost £2k with the diagnostic and service. Kind of think I overpaid on this one, I bought this car second hand as well, 80k miles originally and did about 5k miles. I drove around with the 'drive train' error for about 2-3 days before I took it seriously as car started to stall, I think because I did this I blew the manifold possibly parts of the engine.
Did you feel the difference after cleaning intake manifold? Is it noticable?
Hard to say as my engine was out for 3-4 weeks
Ja sam skoro čistio i nisam primetio nikakvu posebnu razliku. Doduše ostao sam zatečen da usisna uopšte nije bila toliko prljava, a auto ima 365000 km. Tako da ti je moj savet da ne bacas 80 evrica kao ja 🙂
Yes, gas response is quicker and felt it softer and less noise when accelerating
could cleaning this fix a problem with losing power now and again?
Use Mr muscle oven cleaner..comes up a treat....shh. A wee trade secret....
Yeah watch my later video: How To Clean A Diesel Intake Manifold & Intake Ports *EASY WAY*
ua-cam.com/video/mQTEmzF_8tw/v-deo.html
The best way to clean it is ultrasound bath
Of course but not very DIY friendly 👍🏻
Could. You not use a steam cleaner
Won’t have the same affect!
I use oven cleaner on my m57
I think the best thing to do is buy it new. With time and heat the swirl valves and spindle weaken. No point in cleaning all that crap, it will never be as good as new.
@6:31 This is how I clean my ears.
😂
while I was watching your video, Scotty at the right panel said "Never Carbon Clean Your Car's Engine" lol
fuck me, confuse me for a bit here
Do not listen to Scotty Kilmer
@@GeorgeAusters lol
yeah . i selectively listen to scotty
I think the next purchase for my garage will be a dishwasher
😂
Dude what's you email please. Need advice please
All my contact info is in the description of my videos mate👍🏻

Best to do it on the pavement. Better than putting oil on your own driveway.
But my garage reported broken flaps now since they did the chains. Funny how they were fine fir me 25k miles prior🤣. Darned cowboy mechanics can’t trust many of them
Niceee
Thanks 🤗
