Hello Tony.. Greetings from the "left"-coast!
My son and I bought a 1968 Galaxie 500, 2-door sedan 2 years ago. When he get's to a point of proper age and responsibility he will take over payments. LOL. Our 68' was really owned by a "little old Lady"...from Sacramento! We are thrilled with being it's current "care takers", you know. My Grandfather was a Ford Man, and so am I. He had a farm full of old Fords in all sorts of models. Most of them are still rusting in the field back in Iowa. I'm a few years older than you, and have great memories of summers with my Grandpa and I driving "into town" for some A&W burgers, onion rings, cold root beer on roller skates and some farm supplies. 1970's were a great era in my opinion!
Our 68' is in need of a minor restoration and repaint, maybe some day. She has the 302 and FMX 3-speed on the column with the smaller 8" rear end. It's had only two owners before us and but several engine "performance" upgrades. So she is no longer bone stock, but I've got her running well. We live up the the Sierra mountain range and like you we can't (won't) drive our Galaxie year round. Too much debris, salt, sand and loose nuts behind the wheel. Even in the summer I don't drive on the freeway. Finding a NOS front window is difficult and very expensive. She also has 4 wheel drum brakes. I've been looking for the right year parts to upgrade the front brakes to a Ford disc system. *Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Just woke up early today and found this video of your exceptional G-500. BTW... Piss on the haters! Bet they don't even own a Galaxie anyway. My Grandpa would approve our your mean green 500 GT!
*I have a very old book of all the wrecking yards in the USA. listed by state, brand and model that they carry. It has been very helpful finding parts for a reasonable non-ebay price. Let me know if you are searching for anything.
    Cheers
    PSR

That's great you are including your son. Thank you for sharing your cars story. As far as front disc brakes I think you need to find a doner car for the spindles and such. The calipers, pads and hoses you can still get from parts stores and ebay.

This brings back some wonderful memories. We had a '68 Country Squire LTD station wagon in highland green, with the two-tone wood grain sidings, power windows, and vacuum-activated light covers. We got it used in 1971, in perfect condition. The only upgrade it had that I haven't seen in any other '68 Galaxies or station wagons is -- wait for it: a factory-installed 8-track tape player! When we bought the car, I had no idea what this was...dad had to explain it to me. Fortunately, the previous owner left one tape in the glove compartment: Glenn Campbell's 'Wichita Lineman' album, which came out the same year as the car. At four years old, I was in heaven. When "the loan went through," as mom put it, and we brought the station wagon home, I would go out in the garage and just sit in the car and look at all the buttons. It was such a major improvement over the little white Buick Skylark wagon we had before, that I felt like the smartest kid on the street. I remember that when dad would turn the key to start the car, the big V-8 engine would make the whole car shimmy for a full second!

Theres a big difference between adding aftermarket parts to an all original car and adding factory OEM options/parts to one. I'm a purist but i absolutely love the way Tony upgraded the car. Nothing was added that wasn't an available factory Ford option so as they say in the auction business, "No harm, no foul". Lol. And you have to remember that back then in those days, there were dozens and dozens of options available for these cars and to find an all original car literally "fully loaded" isn't reality. Nobody walked into a Ford dealership in 1968 and checked over 40 plus boxes of options. If they did, it would be the cost of a Lincoln. Great video.

    • @tonyscarcare5657
      @tonyscarcare5657  2 роки тому +2

Thank you, Kenneth. Yeah back then everything was a stand alone option. The best part though is every hole was there as it went down the line so if it was ordered with it, it was bolt on and send down the line. Now all these new vehicles have everything incorporated into all these specific harnesses and computers that makes it's impossible to add options.

@@tonyscarcare5657 Yep. I think it was called light ivy gold metallic? It was a beautiful color combo with the highland green metallic exterior. Only issue I really had with it was the factory shifter liked to 'lock up' between gears. I replaced it with a Hurst., then zero problems. Not factory correct, but much easier to drive. I sold it back in 1973, when I bought a new Pontiac Grand Am (Tempest basted), triple burgundy, with the 400 engine/auto trans. Unfortunately, I have no photos of the car. Only memories. Perfect, you added what needed to be added and didn't touch anything else. Color is awesome, not sure I remember too many in that color from back in the day. I was 13 in 1968 and a Country Squire that year was my parents' first new car. Gold with gold vinyl interior and of course that beautiful wood graining. My dad ordered it with the standard 302 and 3 speed manual on the column. While it was still under warranty, several exhaust manifolds fractured and had to be replaced. Shortly before the warranty ran out, apparently they made a running change and added a metal ridge to the outside of the exhaust manifold, no more fracturing, I remember my dad was very happy about that. Your discussion of the additional metal signifying heavy duty suspension components certainly ring true in that case. My name is also Tony and 68 Fords are my all-time favorite. I had a 68 LTD coupe pale yellow with the black vinyl top and the black brougham interior. I loved that car until the man with the cattle trailer t-boned me in the intersection when I was only 20, 1975. I also had a 1968 Ford F100 stepside, 240 6-cylinder and three on the tree, had worked on it until it drove perfectly. Then a tornado in April 1979 took it away from me, I found most of the front end and the engine about half a mile away from where I had left it. Long time ago, great stories. Glad I found you because I do like Adams videos as well, rock on Tony. Eager to see more progress on that convertible!

Beautiful ‘68. Imagine a ‘68 Ford with no rust! I had a 2 year old ‘71, it was rusted out bad in our Great Lakes winter climate! Colour is nice, but it’s all a matter of taste but sorry to say I don’t care for the gold stripe, I prefer the original white rocker panel stripe. Not wanting to get you upset but I also do like a car as original as it can possibly be. Just the way it came off the truck at the dealer. Even that alarm key hole although not original it was an indication of the cars history and would be something to talk up. At the same time I do appreciate that you are keeping this car going and preserving it while adding your own touch to it.

The two things are completely different. The 390 GT engine in the Fairlane was an engine option. The GT equipment group was an option on the 68 and 69 Ford XL and required a 390 2V, 390 4V, or a 428 4V for 68 and then the same in 69 but then had the 429 instead of the 428. I have every 1968 Ford dealer brochure and booklet available. It explains it all. They were not "GT engines!" Like in the Fairlane.

I had a 1968 Country Squire. Not a ding nor a spec of rust on it. Metal was too heavy for most dings. Paint was faded but buffed out well for a few eels ata time. Maroon. 390-2V, previous owner had a valve job done before I bought the car. For $950 in 1997. Everything except the gas gauge worked. AC was dealer installed. When I got it it had like 105,000 miles. I loved that car like no other. The entirety of the 1968 Ford Full Sized lineup was everything at once. Stately and elegant. Muscular and sexy. Mean and gentlemanly. I replaced every wear item on the front suspension and the rear springs. Believe it or not, I found those giant station wagon discs on the shelf at my local Parks Auto Parts in Charleston, SC, still in vacuum wrapped plastic, after sitting for some 38 years!! That car did not drip one drop of fluid, ever. I could tell a lot of stories about times with that car, but I’ll spare you for now. The vacuum headlight covers saved me from a hefty ticket, potentially some jail time
If I ever won the lottery, the first thing I’d blow money on would be one of each body style, save the four door sedan, in Maroon, all LTDs or XLs. Simply beautiful cars. From the sides, the front dead on, 1/4 angles, dead on rear, any angle, reeked of class and strength. Check out Dirty Harry for a Ford Custom, plain grille, same car, nasty mean looking. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

What a real BEAUTY you have here!!! And only 27k on the odo...nice. Hey, I agree with you when you said that it should not be a big deal that you have made modifications to this rare car. I did the same thing with my first car, a 1970 Ford Galaxie 500 coupe. I scoured the wrecking yards to find wrecked 1970 LTD's so O could strip off all of the pieces that I needed to make my Galazie 500 an LTD too. And I did lolol. I upgraded all of the exterior pieces and then I added the clock, an AM FM stereo radio (on the left hand side of the dash, I hated it) door cards, interior lighting and a paint job. I had to stop there and sell the car since I was moving to Spain for a few years and needed the money. I think it's smart to add the front power disc brakes and all of the wonderful interior and exterior additions. Like you said, all you are lacking is AC. But if you want to add it, you can certainly do that (I would, I live in SE Arizona) and just buy a reproduction one from Vintage Air. They do a great job for older cars like yours.
Anyway, I've yapped long enough. Bottom line:
Give me your car and I promise I won't tell the police where you buried the previous owners body, okay? Does that sound fair to you?
You have a real prize with your car, especially the Console and buckets (and windows, tilt, seats, radio etc). You have done a terrific job! And for the folks screaming about value, it's YOUR car - who says it's for sale? Pffft
    You did great buddy!

Thanks a bunch. My family owned three different 1968 Galaxies; none were an XL, but they all had a 390-2v engine. Sufficient power, but slightly heavy on fuel economy. The transmissions were FMX, with the detachable bellhousing. Ford referred to the station wagon as a ten passenger vehicle, but that would be true only if the passengers in the facing rear seats were either under eight years of age, or midgets.

I know a professional car restorer, and he told me when it comes to any kind of modifications on classic cars, if you use factory parts and install them in the manner they would have built the car in the year it was produced, it’s ok to add features and it does not hurt the value of the car. So your power windows and tilt are fine because you used Ford parts from the right era. Now if you installed a universal power window kit out of a 2022 JC Whitney catalog, people would have questions about you lol
