Thank you for doing a reasonable review and not a senseless hit piece like so many other rage-bait youtubers these days. I have a Q3 and PSVR2 and they are both great for different things. Games like Half-Life Alyx are really where the PSVR2 shines, with its vibrant colors and atmospheric shadow detail and large FoV, and native DisplayPort at 120 FPS. I use my Quest3 for games that need the ability to move around untethered. For simming, Crystal Light still seems to be the no-brainer choice in most cases
Gran Turismo 7 is a perfect match, too. Though I am not about to defend or compare it to a PC headset or game, in its own right that combination is amazing
I have replaced my G2 with a PSVR2 and belong to the weird group of people who actually enjoy it. Either it's my eyesight that's getting poor, or I'm just lucky and not too bothered by the mura, I just pretend it's on my sunglasses when I occasionally spot it. I do have a Q3 too, but right now, the colours, FOV and contrast is novel and fun enough to make it my daily driver for anything seated, even if I admit the clarity and resolution leaves a lot to be desired.
Heya bud, VR is so individual. I like the PSVR for gaming more than my Quest Pro. The colours are so good. Yeah the mura is a bit bad. That seems to be different from headset to headset. I use it together with DLSS at ultra quality and CAS. Not much oversampling. That is senseless in the PSVR2. It costs only FPS. Thx for the video ❤
By the way i sold my quest 3 and kept the psvr2 for pc.. But i am a oled guy..Somehow i get more immersed in the psvr2.Its more 3d and you are more in the world..The quest 3 felt like looking at a dull picture.. Even that the quest 3 was far sharper and has great lenses..And the psvr2 has mura and softer image.. But i am more into games like skyrim modded, halflife, pavlov etc... And skyrim at night is something special on the psvr2.. But great video!
Oddly enough, one of the best parts of the headset is the rumble built into to it (imo), which like the eye tracking, and hdr, and hd controller haptics, Sony left sitting on the table for the pc release. 😑 I'm pretty confident in any other kind of VR game besides flight sims, the resolution would be perfectly fine. (the games I play on psvr2 are crystal clear most of the time) Also, because it's *not* a crazy high resolution, people with mere mortal pcs should have an easier time running it, and getting a high framerate. Theoretically I should have my new pc built by the end of next year and I'm totally using my psvr2 for it. (with the assumption the missing features eventually get added in) Playing VR with oled, hdr, and those haptics is a ton of fun and incredibly immersive, especially when the game you're playing is running at 120fps. Is it for folks who want the best of the best? Probably not. But for people who want eye tracking, oled, hdr, and the best haptics in the business, it's an option worth looking into imo. Also, I personally couldn't stand how they totally missed the mark with the comfort (unlike psvr1), so I would recommend the Globular Cluster add on. Edit: forgot to add, the mura and persistence issues are often times alleviated by turning down the brightness a bit. I run mine at like 70%.
It would be cool if you could compare to both Quest 3 and G2 as many of us G2 users will unfortunately be having to choose between quest and psvr2. It would be good to have better idea of how they relate to G2 since that's our reference point. I would be very keen to hear how the downsides of each compare, specifically the downside of not having displayport in msfs
I have an older OLED headset, and compared the PSVR2. The PSVR2 colors are better than mine, certainly beautiful, no doubt. I returned it though because of the patchy mura you described, it was quite bad on the one i bought. Mura, blurry fresnel lenses, low resolution display, and uncomfortable are words i would use to describe it. Maybe they'll do better next time
I got the psvr and g2. The psvr2 has replaced my g2 because of the bigger sweat spot and the brighter colors. I have a 3080 ti and I had to lower my resolution to get rid of the stuttering.
I've been f'ing around with this for the last 2weeks. Smooth as silk at 140% resolution in steam. I do have some low and off settings, I prefer usable fidelity (something that looks decent and frame rate) rather than a sharp stuttery mess... I don't like motion smoothing either, it has a sh*t fit when dealing with props...
Good video Steve. Makes sense that it would look very low resolution lacking a full subpixel arrangement. I had both the Quest 1 with its dual OLED displays the same resolution per eye as the Valve Index, and also the Rift S, with it low resolution, single panel LCD display, and whilst the Quest 1 had great colours and blacks, the resolution, due to the lack of an RGB subpixel resolution was far too low resolution to be enjoyable, and the Rift S looked much better. The PSVR2 is only 18 PPD so would definitely not be great for flight simming. I'm going to wait and see what MSFS 2024 is like and might then consider buying something new. There's no HMD that really excites me at the moment, all of them seem to have some benefits and some very definite trade offs. But, we're not getting a Quest Pro 2 any more, and I want to enjoy MSFS 2024 with really high resolution so I need something to come along soon!
Maybe we need micro OLED rather than just regular OLED displays in a vr headset. I had my BigScreen beyond and only problem I’ve noticed with that was the limited field of view due to the intensely magnified lenses
Do the PSVR2 colors look better than in the Crystal Light? I've seen through the lens videos where Crystal colors looked better; however, I don't know if through the lens is accurate enough to judge. Anyone with both, which colors look best?
It is not inevitable! Bigscreen Beyond and the latest microOLED panels do not have mura the way PSVR2 does. I believe it's just cheaper "off-the-shelf" general purpose OLED panels that could be manufactured for phones that tend to suffer from it, I'm sure it pushed the cost to manufacture way down
No. There is absolutely no reason an OLED display should suffer from this effect. However, it does require an extra calibration step during manufacturing to get rid of it. You set every pixel to the same color and then have a spectrometer measure the light output of every pixel. In the display's controller firmware you then calibrate an offset for each pixel to achieve uniformity You do that for red green and blue colors individually, and for each color you take readings and calibrate at multiple brightness settings. Of course that costs money. Manufacturers must choose what they want to spend their budget on.
@@julianmazzola Haha. In theory. Yes. But just considering that the equipment needed to do this is SUPER expensive, basically custom hardware for every panel and assembly line, makes me think it would be quite the challenge, not to mention the PSVR2 probably doesn't have a controller that can be calibrated in this way. Never underestimate the modding community, but my gut tells me it would probably be cheaper to just buy a headset that already does this.
The comparison you make should be with the G2. Theres alot simmers with a G2 to whom a psvr2 is an option. Yes the psvr2 is still old tech bit its technically equivalent or better than the G2.
Yeah I own the Psvr2 on PC...it's not good for MsFs. Otherwise it retired Pimax 8kx in race Sims and gaming. It's so vibrant Like HDR is enabled or something. The colors in contrast are unbeatable. I won't waste money on another hmd unless it's micro OLED with pancake lenses preferably.
I still have my oled samsung odyssey dual 1440x1600 vr headset i bought 7 years ago and it runs super well. The resolution pixel is not really visible. It is like an old crt tv structure, which makes the decor more realistic finally. I don’t know how to explain it. But tokyo scene is astounding and day scenes have great color. Very good for 400$ cdn $ headset. And the controller runs very well in Deo vr and other vr software. I can’t imagine what microsoft and Samsung would have done today with a support of the mixed reality platform. They could have develop a light core without visual, and a separate software to provide the custom desktop and vr house, providing great performance in msfs2020 and 2024 and compatibility in the xbox and stem vr. MS ARE IDIOTS.
I would agree psvr2 is not good enough for flight simming. I have a 7800x3d and a 4090. But ok for PC games etc. The resolution is way to low. Waiting for something better.

Totally agree about feeling "more" in the world with psvr2.
It looks more vibrant and makes the quest 3 look and feel dull.
sold my PSVR2 and kept Quest. Way too blurry and image wobble, horrid wires and pretty bad controllers. for me, Q3 way more immersive.

Is mura inevitable for oled screens? If not, what would a manufacturer have to do to make sure there's no mura?
Any analog array technology is liable to nonuniformities.
Digital cameras may employ sensor corrections for so-called fixed pattern noise.
