That bit were you say don't get hung up on resolution is just so true, Especially in sim racing. There is so much snobbery in sim racing it hurts sometimes, I use triples but also have to dial the detail down a bit more than I would like due to a COVID bought GPU (I:E, My 550 quid should have gone further), But once in game and racing I don't see it and don't care.
So hats off to saying there is nothing wrong with buying 3 cheap 1080p 60 hz 40" TV's for a triple screen setup, UA-cam is full of content creators that would never go near a statement like that .

I agree mate, there is a lot of snobbery and it's not needed at all, we all buy and use what we can and thats all that matters! As i said in the video I would not have half of this if it wasn't for LG and Race @ Home.

Because it doesn't make much sense in 2024 to buy 2006 tech, at that point you're paying more for the alluminum and plastic used to make the TV frame than you do paying for the TV screen. A 4k 40-50 inch tv goes for $150-200 at the low end and a 40-50 inch 1080p tv retails for about $130-150..

So true, 1080p, even at 60hz works very well because of the fps performance, particularly with a higher end racing PC.

@@demetrisyianni9175 thats normal for vr depending on your hardware, and the game. i remember gt sport on psvr1 looking pretty bleh. as well as on my cv1 in the early assetto days not being that great on my hardware at the time 4790k/1080ti. i use an index as well as psvr2 for gt7 now, and i honestly think it looks pretty good. i am using a 3090ti\ and a 4090 on my pc setups so i crank the settings. index only gets a max of 120fps though. while my triples do 280hz, mind you they are 1080p. 1440p\4k displays wouldnt do that fps at the time i did my setup. my 3 1080p 280hz displays where 1300 for all 3, the 1440p models would have cost me 2.3k and only been 165hz, i play fps games as well and i prefer 200 and above on those. the new swift and lg 4k 240-/480hz 1080p displays are 1300 a piece. i cant see me playing 4 5k for three of them. hopefully the price drops a lot.

The immersion and feeling of being on a track where I can see everything in 3d all is just brilliant. As someone with VR and triple 32s, I use the triples 90% of the time. VR is cool to let friends try it out and it's a lot of fun for flying games but you also lose out on a good part of your peripheral vision. So for serious sim racing, it's triples all day. What someone needs to do is make a racing helmet that has the visor as the VR, that would be sweet.

I've been running triple 27" screens for several years now. Spent a lot of time getting all the measurements right for a proper FOV (around 160ish). The center screen is tucked up closely behind my wheelbase and I've got a USBD480 dashboard screen hooked up to SimHub for additional telemetry. Testing it out back-to-back with a VR headset, the vastly improved peripheral vision was just too valuable, so I haven't used VR since getting the triples.

I find the 48" setup is really good, set up right behind the wheel base you get a very realistic FOV, and with that distance and a 45 degree angle on the side monitors they cover exactly 180 degrees of my vision :) Would love to switch to VR, or at least do both, at some point but the tech needs to get better. You mentioned that with VR you have ‘tunnel vision’… but you didn’t mentioned that you can also just turn your head to see into the turns… you lose the peripheral view, but you can turn your head to see what you need to see… I’m not knocking triples… the feeling of open-ness you get from the triples is hard to beat… but also being able to look around your cockpit and see your world in 3D is hard to beat too… with triples, you still see your house when you look around… being able to turn your head and see a back seat, or look down at your passenger seat, (or road in some cars), or up and see the roof is awesome

If you also like to play space and flight sims, you might want to go larger so your eyes feel like they are converging naturally on something much further away than a monitor would be. I went with multiple 4K projectors instead of monitors for this reason and a few others. Its 10ft × 50ft and a tight 180 degree curved screen so it doubles as a immersive movie theater for a bunch of friends at the same time - plus, by going with projectors, it lets it also all be 3D.

At 11:00, this effect really isn’t as dramatic with an ultrawide as you can also reduce the FOV a little and encompass maybe 75% of the total view. Where triples really benefit you is immersion and being able to see those big mirrors or wheels in formula cars. I don’t think “depth perception” is really a thing with single monitors, and my lap times are often faster with unrealistically small FOV’s. The car appears smaller, that is (I guess FOV is technically larger?)

I like my triple screens (27"), they aren't quite that big so I don't get as close to full peripheral vision as you can but even just seeing movement from the side and getting a better sense of speed help, always having the mirrors also helps, but since I'm a long time flight sim fanatic I also had a TrackIR 2, and once I hooked that along with the triples... wow!
Now I can shoulder check and with a quick glance get the missing sides, or in the open wheel setups I can actually shoulder check behind me it's wild! Head movement takes a little getting used to as you train your head to provide a bit of glance to swing the virtual head a bit more usually but having used VR before I found I got some eye strain and discomfort from the headset over long periods so for anyone who might be the same but want more FOV that might be a good bridging of the gap if you want a more immersive experience or just don't have the budget or room size to have 3 big 55" screens.

One thing that isn't mentioned much with triples is the importance of site line in relation to horizon. Not all games have an adjustment for this so what can happen is different drivers depending on height will see the side screens differently. For the person it was originally set up for it will appear to be perfect and level across all screens. But if a shorter driver uses the same setup the horizon on the same monitors will appear to rise the further away from the center screen you get. The same can be said for a taller drive but the opposite will be seen. This is very evident if something like a fence or wall crosses over the bezel or in this case the bezel free kit. The wall will appear to bend instead of being straight.

I also find it easier to make out braking points based on road texture on the 27" monitor over the Quest 2 (I have a 4070 ti SUPER with the Quest 2 bitrate forced to 800Mbps, 1.5x resolution). Yeah there is some hardware overhead but i can run any simracing game with really decent optics without any framedrops on a 3080/ryzen5800x. If you want to do 12 hour endurance races you have to get a powered usb cable but other than that there is very little friction to use the thing. I turn on my pc, turn on vd or oculus wether i care for a cable or not, then start the game directly and i am in the car.

VR experience and immersion is INSANE. And it's also incredibly fun.
But no shot it's better than triple screens for any gaming. Even the quest 3 looks like garbage compared to a 1440p 27-32 screen. Although I'd argue 27 is max for crispness. Maybe the 5090/6090 might change it with the Quest 4 or new VR models. But acting like vr is some holy grail for now is bit much. Even on maxed out settings and lower fps it looks like you're playing on 480-720p lol. The main benefit of vr is depth perception, and "fun" for awhile. But even on best current gen it looks like you'd play on a toaster compared to an actual high rez screen

If you don’t mind having the displays close to you I don’t see much advantage going bigger. It also means that 1080p can look sharper and you don’t need 4K and a $10,000 pc to run it.

I think the field of view argument holds up if you put a VR hat on and don’t turn your head at all during racing, then you get 100 degrees or so of vision.
You look into the corners though, you look where you want to go, that’s the beauty of VR.
Also the cost of running triples over time would be pretty expensive.
My son bought the massive Samsung ultra wide, and sold it inside 6 months because of the higher electric bills using it created.

You don't need eye tracking, thats used for a single screen where you cannot physically look left/right as you have no displays.

My graphics card is the RTX 4090, which has only one HDMI port and three DP ports on the back. Since the TV/monitor I am using only has an HDMI port, I will need to use an adapter to set up the triple display. I plan to use a model that supports 120Hz, but I am wondering if everything will function properly when connecting through an adapter for the triple display setup. Additionally, since I have enough space, I am considering going with the 77-inch display. If there are no issues such as significant screen distortion that might make the 77-inch less ideal compared to a 55-inch, I would prefer to go with the 77-inch setup.

And from my experience 120Hz on a cheap panel can also be problematic as when you are very close to your display things like ghosting are more visible and as soon as you turn the car just slightly you go from sharp to blurry right away (bad motion resolution). Interesting video with good info overall!
(Nice bonus info about that crash helmets actually have better FOV than VR headsets for example - that was good info!)
    Still though:
    1) @13.40 is a bit of an unfair comparison: you would'nt put a 32 incher that far away from the cockpit. (as you're mentioning at @19:50 when talking about the triple screen setup)
    2) Also, yes if you increase the FOV on a single screen beyond the calculations, then the scale will be off and the immersion will go down to some degree, and measuring distance can get trickier... I understand and agree with the basic premise of the video!
*But* my honest opinion is that if you ARE limited to a relatively small monitor sitting relatively far away, it will feel more natural and you'll see more of your surroundings if you go for a higher FOV than what the numbers tell you. It won't be "correct" but with a little adaptation it will work and you'll see more of your surroundings. Judging distance and getting a feeling for the rotation of the car will be harder though, but you'll get used to it if you have to.
Im not saying single screen is better or anything: I'm just saying the actual practical difference - if you tweak your settings - won't be as bad as this video makes it out to be.
    ...
BTW it would be interesting to see a video of which games/sims actually *do* fully support triple screen in a good way, including calculating angles for the side screens, distances etc etc... and which games/sims that *doesnt*. (Or is there a video of this already? If so I apologize!)

      Thanks mate!
      1) It's an apples to apples comparison, if I moved it closer (which I can't) it wouldn't demonstrate the point.
      2) Yeah IMO you are better off not using cockpit view in this situation (as you can see so little) and going with what gives the best experience and playability.
IME All proper simulation titles bar rally have triple screen support along with flight sims too.

@@demetrisyianni9175exactly this, everywhere you have these redditors spamming the superiority of VR compared to triples. No shot these people ever had triples before. Or maybe they played 1080 on a 55inch and just were used to absolute sht ppi.

I can see how maybe the 4090 with a pimax could get closer.. But even then it just starts to have an acceptable image. 6090 Wil be the first card with hopefully better pcvr's to actually be able to replace screens. Although triple 4k 144hz oleds will also be a tough competition

Hi Karl I’ve literally just purchased 3 x msi 32in 1440p monitors. Then I found this video. I watch your videos a lot for reviews and I’m not sure whether to be disappointed or not. My main concern going from a large 4k tv to a smaller screen was indeed the size comparison but thought I’d adjust to the smaller screen. Especially given that I’ve gone from a single screen to triples. This video though makes me nervous about the cockpit view for ACC. I want to be excited about getting triples. Will I still be happy when I’m in the seat with the 32inch triples? For now I literally can’t go any bigger due to space. Thanks for the great videos and content you provide us with.

    • @KarlGosling
      @KarlGosling  2 місяці тому

With smaller displays you can bring them closer to you which will fill your field of view more so I don't think you will be disappointed, but of course there's no substitute for size and being able to look fully left/right as cars come along side you.

Nice Video Karl. Always good stuff. I have triples now and I love them. Will eventually go larger, however, I did get a Quest 3 for Xmas/Bday gift and after making some adjustments and taking advantage of my 4080, it is an enticing option as well. You get all the POV that is needed to see cars and perspectives. I think between the 2, I would rather have a proper triple setup, but VR is a lot of fun. Especially on tracks like Daytona. Cannot do Rally, I get motion sickness. Maybe with a motion rig that wouldn't be the case. Again, good stuff mate. Have a great 2024.

Yeah I can do circuit based racing in VR but not rally either for the same reason, but I also don't like the small FOV and often race with friends so swapping a sweaty VR headset between us, changing IPD and strap size every 10 mins is not ideal! lol

On ACC i never really looked past the 1st 3rd of either outside screen, most of the time the car interior blocks the view out the windows and mirrors anyway!! My wish is that games could adjust pov for curved displays. Like a heavy curved 49" but the curve actually bends pov too.
