There is a beauty in this that words cannot describe. The message, the voice tones and harmonies, the colors, the scenes, the sweet-sour feel, the celtic sound, the rythm, the soft hiatus, the musicianship... A gem of hope when times are rough. Thanks Cutting Crew.
@@hkchung1820 Yes. My uncle Kevin Macmichael passed away in 2002 from Cancer :( It's sad, but at least i can still come to youtube and find videos of him that I have not yet seen. It's almost like he's still alive out there. :)
Lovely song. One of those rare music videos that one could watch on mute or listen without the visual. The kid's smile is just like the lead singer's :).
Love the imagery. I could watch this along with Thomas Dolbys “I love you goodbye” on a loop for a day or so and enjoy the feeling of my blood pressure dropping to blissful. 😊
I think they should have chose a different name Cutting Crew sounded like something from the 1950s and completely eliminated all black and white videos and use more hard guitar nonetheless this was a very good band far better than the male fronted bands that we saw all the time on television and heard on radio during the 1980s
@Kevin Hullinger : Supposedly, It's a song with christian lyrics. I bought a "Best of" album of Cutting Crew, and that one and one or two others, had a cross at the end of the song title on the CD cover back. And when I looked closer to see the meaning of the cross, it said something like I just told you. Now, I'm no bible scholar, but I do know my bible pretty well. And since the lyrics don't outright say what "The scattering" refers to, we can only speculate, as that's left to our interpretation. But the only thing that comes to my mind, is what happened in the story of the tower of Babel. God put confusion in the people there, and changed their tongues, meaning their language, not their actual tongues in their mouths. So if you suddenly can't communicate with the people like you used to, it would be logical, that they left and settled down elsewhere, the people who shared a language leaving together. Leaving mankind, or at least a large portion of it, scattered all over, geographically speaking, hence the title of 'The Scattering'. Which woud explain the various languages of the world today, and how they are typically linked to vastly different regions of the world. And the lyrics say that it will happen again, but I don't know what to say about that, other than it could happen again, only time will tell. But hey, that's just a theory - A music theory. Or should I say lyrics theory?
@@JarodMoonchild1975 Very good analysis friend ,this video has so many Christian images within it, perhaps that is why Virgin Records(anything but Christian) dropped them after this album. Billionaires who own not 1 but 2 Islands do not enjoy Christianity!
There is this sad feeling in this video, like a undescribable melancholia. Might be the black and white tones of the film, or maybe the theme, or the imagery brought by the celtic sound. It is a superb song, a one-of-a-kind gem Cutting Crew gave to the fans.
Being a long time and old songwriter now(no not on this channel) I think it the the melancholy and thought provoking chord progression, it is mournful yet beautiful and nostalgic at the same time.
Marla Lovely Marla. Your much loved brother Kevin was Star in this Gorgeous song, A True Classic that will remain Forever! And CC Fans Nick and band continue with gigs and more Great Gorgeous songs. See the Beautiful songs of Grinning Souls album, and Compass Mentos album. And a Gorgeous song of Christmas: King Of The World. The Scattering a beautiful SO so talented song and also true today as it reminds me So much of Israel Palestine and Ukrainian People of what they Wrongly are going through! The lyrics and the whole arrangement of the Gorgeous Scattering is a Master piece. Thank you dear Nick and Kev. Yeah really mis you Kev. JB. UK.
This is a beautiful song no doubt but I have wonder if our heroes here are closet Christians, with images of small churches, telegraph poles resembling a cross, white horses, and even a white dove!
The imagery was imagined by Alex Proyas, the Director, based on the lyrics. It's a tale of leavings and hoped-for homecomings. Boys and girls will see in time That they were wrong to go Fires don't burn at home Like they Used to burn Those nights Grew so long The scattering (All the children say) Will come again (It's taken them away) No seeds to fall (All the children say) No sons to blame As one by one they left home Tired old men Spin tales of when A man could work And hold his head up high Ghosts roam this town With pockets full of rye they'd all fall down But soon their jars all ran dry The scattering (All the children say) Will come again (It's taken them away) No seeds to fall (All the children say) No sons to blame As one by one they left home The scattering (All the children say) Has come again (It's taken them away) No seeds to fall (All the children say) Like better days The scattering (All the children say) Has come again (It's taken them away) But if skies could fall (All the children say) With harvest rain Then one by one They'll come home

Too much black and white footage and too many actors in Cutting Crew videos combined with radio and MTV that wouldn't give them much AirPlay it probably hurt their sales.. a lot of good music like this got overlooked while scuzzy hair music like Guns and Roses was promoted non-stop in 1989

Very underrated band of the 80’s. Most likely not enough glam. Wonderful song and the lyrics will stand the test of time.

so their record label merged with another one and Cutting Crew fell through the cracks.
Beautiful song!!! Cutting Crew is part of my childhood/adolescence and it's still so conforting listening to their music.
It is a beautiful song with a rich set of instruments, great words, and incredible singing. For sure, it is a timeless jewel. Thanks, Cutting Crew!!

Sounds more like the children will see the errors of the New Testament and will scatter from it back to the Old Testament.
I blinked, and the whole era was gone.
Muy chula
One by one they left home
.....

One by one they'll come home!

Boys and girls will see in time
That they were wrong to go
Fires don't burn at home
Like they Used to burn
Those nights Grew so long
The scattering (All the children say)
Will come again (It's taken them away)
No seeds to fall (All the children say)
No sons to blame
As one by one they left home
Tired old men
Spin tales of when
A man could work
And hold his head up high
Ghosts roam this town
With pockets full of rye they'd all fall down
But soon their jars all ran dry
The scattering (All the children say)
Will come again (It's taken them away)
No seeds to fall (All the children say)
No sons to blame
As one by one they left home
The scattering (All the children say)
Has come again (It's taken them away)
No seeds to fall (All the children say)
Like better days
The scattering (All the children say)
Has come again (It's taken them away)
But if skies could fall (All the children say)
With harvest rain
Then one by one
They'll come home
