Ep. 21 ABANDONED Bldg RENOVATION ... Brick wall DEMOLISHED for a HUGE Window
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 лип 2021
- In ep. 21 of my abandoned building renovation, we’re looking at the masonry work to open up a brick wall and add a new window. The masonry was a lot more work intensive than I realized, and also more interesting. We also talk about the issues I’m facing for the installation of the hardwood flooring in the living room.

I can't get it, it won't let ne
Idea for future merch: Ballcaps, and shot glasses that have a chicago skyline with the Modustrial name melting out of the bottom. I'd buy those for sure!
Can you get some black t-shirts?
Really enjoying all of your videos. Is it pronounced MOD-ustrial or MOE-dustrial?
Explain solution for Termites
Yeah definitely show us the roof chill area being built or assembled!
I feel really jealous of all the people who find this series when it's finished
Init been watching since the second episode
yes build a deck
I remember getting to the 3rd episode the day I found this series and realizing I would have to wait
Same here. .i have been watching since the beginning
Right?? Totally feel you there.
The roof project sounds fun. A nice distraction, and something anyone can do anywhere.
The mushrooms instantly make the room _Eco-friendly._ No worries.
hahahahaha
They great for Ramen :)
Awesome watching the masonry work! So clean 🔥🔥
thanks brother!
@@modustrial your in Chicago ?? How is it the masons are using red metal angle iron ?? We arent allowed to use that in VA. galvanized only . The red metal rusts after time and expands ,causing the mortar to crack and eventually the brick. Mid-West weather is at least as bad as east coast I thought ?
as far as rooftop projects, I wouldn't mind a change of pace. Honestly tho the past year of watching you renovate this place has been very fun. I subbed just before you started this whole project, I think.
I did too, this kinda content is inspiring AF. I wanna renovate my own place one day!
And he should definitely film the building of the rooftop project!
Sorry for the set backs, but better now than in 6 months or 1 year, when all the furniture is in (+ built in!) and you start to feel at home.
My parents have this old wardrobe that came from my great grandparents home that was infested with powderpost beetles. Considering these extended to the structure of your building and not only that, you'll be doing woodwork, you absolutely want to have a pest control company inspecting that. Home-grade products aren't effective against this pest as it only takes a beetle/worm to survive to repeat the whole cycle.
whoa, big yikes
This man has nerves of steel tackling every setback like it's nothing. If this was me I'd probably have had like 10 nervous breakdowns by this point.
I'm sure he does have them, but it is called: Video editing...
as sad as it is to see all the setbacks, I'm actually really looking forward to the new content! particularly the reframing around the door. my husband and I are looking for a home to reno for ourselves and this series has taught both of us SO much!
Definitely would like to see the roof deck project build.
Can't wait! Build the deck - You deserve a place to kick back. You are an inspiration.
The level of experience on these brick men were hmmm. Ozzing with professional experience and knowledge
Those guys are artists in the truest sense of the word! They did an outstanding job!
Those guys are from the balkans
Oh well, living in a country where all houses are entirely made of bricks, I totally understand your struggles.
Oh good, I was worried there wouldn’t be an awkwardly deep v shirt available.
Lol!
Hilarious
Thought the same thing 😂
ROFL
🤣
The masonry guys being decent enough to remove your bricks without smashing them AND then advising you that you can sell the bricks instead of keeping them to sell for themselves. It's so sweet.
Please show us the build of the roofdeck area. Once it is finished you definitely deserve a place to kick back and relax :)
I'll take any content I can get on this project, throw whatever you want at us!
"There's a fungus among us." is so dumb, but I've been laughing for a solid 5 minutes about it 😂😂😂
Good thing those mushrooms grew there n noticed the problem to be taken care of. Would have been much worse new floor installed then the issue
Building an area for you to enjoy the summer is a great idea
I remember the first time I worked with a Kreg Jig. That stuff changes lives, man. I'll never go back! Also, I wanted to say this video felt really polished and solid, if you guys are looking for feedback! The songs, the timelapse sections, and the pacing was all perfect.
The roof build idea sounds awesome. Everyone needs a place to chill in the sun.
Woo! Called it on the merch! Now don't be too afraid of plugging it in every video going forward, as not every person is watching every video in the series (their loss but I digress). Doesn't need to be anything too over the top, but it needs to be enough to remind people that it's a thing.
For sure! I'm stoked to wear it when it arrives next week, so you'll probably see more of it in vids :)
@@modustrial Ordered myself a couple of Ts since you offered them in some loud colours and big enough size. Note-to-self : Try to remember that American prices don't include Tax.
With the amount of work happening on this project, I'm pretty sure Mike NEVER sleeps!!! And the new (?) iron work on the stairs looks killer! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yes! Definitely want to see you build something for the roof deck challenge with Jonny Builds.
The wood is from blue and red modustrial sign !
Man, that flooring setback is a big bummer time wise and cost wise. The bright side of that is that you have more opportunities to continue the series and gain a bigger following! I would absolutely buy a Modustrial ballcap for my BF and even shot glasses if you do a Chicago skyline with your name melting out of the bottom!
Looks like the paint from the modustrial wave logo wall sign you made, but im not 100% positive
Holy crap! These masons were amazing! Not only does the window brick work look beautiful, but they took so much time and care to preserve those remaining old bricks. Super impressed.
Roof deck is a great idea, would love to see you do a pergola style cover, or maybe get weird and do a tribute to rooftop water towers? Lol
I want to see the roof being done. Sounds like a great change of pace
i was confused at the end for a second when you said metal transmits moisture.
then i thought about it and realised you propably meant that metal transmits heat, so the cold exterior is transmitted through and causes the warm interior air to condensate and build up moisture on the metal surface and if theres no barrier consequently the wood thus the molding wood
Somehow I understood exactly what he meant, with all that in what you said, without even realizing he said it weird 😂
Not sure why you didn’t save those bricks for your projects on the roof you’ll never find ones as cool as that and to buy bricks they cost a lot more than a dollar that you’re selling those for
Because he's like $100K over budget and selling those bricks will earn him some cash back. $1.50 a brick, if he sells 400 bricks that's $600 reclaimed. The wall was triple layer, so the amount of spare bricks was more than likely closer to 600, so that would be almost a grand back in his pocket.
He emptied out his savings and is low on money?? Duh. Did you see the videos??
@@EvilM0nkeyRules Yes, I saw the videos. like 3 videos ago he did a run down of his expenses for the build so far and replacing the roof alone set him back over $50K.
@@christophermorin9036 sry Chris meant to reply to the other guy
@@EvilM0nkeyRules It's alright. I figured as much, but I replied anyway just in case.
That masonry team really show their expertise, fantastic job.
Would love to see a roof project, sounds like fun.
Stay safe
Hello neighbor. Waukegan here.
I just binge watched your reno and wow it’s looking amazing. Loads of hard work by all involved so far like all the trades, friends, neighbors and strangers. I’m Definitely looking forward to the next installment.
Now it’s time to check out the rest of your work 👍🏻
Take care and stay safe 😊
A roof deck build sounds awesome. It is summer after all. Remodels always have surprises, not in a good way. But when it’s done it’s just that much sweeter…
Rooftop patio would be amazing
You know you're getting top notch brick work when the old man is doing the work!
I really love this whole series, but dang I feel bad every time you hit a snag, then to only talk about how much more stuff costs to fix it....when you're already way over budget. Hope all goes better with the floor issue
There sure were alot of hidden costs involved in the restoration of this building, feels bad man, good luck
FYI, be careful using expanding foam to seal window and door frames. If you use the wrong foam it can expand to a degree that it will push the frame in and it will cause issues. In a door frame it can cause the door to be jammed and the same and maybe worse in window frames.
They used low expansion window and door foam......
Considering they were professional window installation contractors, they prooobably know which kind of expanding foam to use.
@@MartinThmpsn That window was probably custom made so my question is, why are there so many gaps? In Portugal, it would be inconceivable and sent back.
Board with all the paint colors...when you did your special Modustrial sign pink/blue.
I love putting in new windows. It’s so refreshing. That’s a huge window. The masonry work is nice.
Of course we want to see that! Also, sorry about the tie in to the frame. That's rough dawg. (Also maybe consider editing out the former name of the building seen from the exterior during the window knockout - I noticed you trying to keep a wrap on the location, I'm sure you don't want folks rollin' up on you)
Unfortunately the damage is done with the location :(
Yes to the break. I'm renovating as well and I understand the need for ' a change is as good as a rest'.
Holy cow i never realized how delicate masonry work was!!
i know, right?!
Looking forward to every single episode - can't wait to see the finished product
OMG!! ITS A NEWW EPISODEEEE!! BEEN WAITING LIKE FOREVERR 😆😆😆
Of course we want to see the deck project!
Wow, never seen arse basic angle iron used for that.. The interesting thing is the use of wet cement to point the bricks between existing and new. Using wet cement shrinks so brickies should use a 'dry mix' packed in to stop shrinkage.
In the uk slate is wedged and wet mortar but the wall is supported with acro props until everything is set
That was some amazing work by the masonry crew, and how decent to tell you that you could sell them for reclaimed bricks instead of just taking them away. That is how you build trust and get called back 👍
I am Watching your videos an its been almost a year. Eagerly waiting to see full building tour, old vs New. Hard Work pays and Dedication reflecting in your every video. Sending all the Good Luck from India.
I would love a decking video, love outdoor carpentry and seeing how its done properly. going to look amazing if your last roof is anything to go by!!! keep up the great work, loving the series.
Look forward to the roof garden build and the tech you will use for movies and music.
Shout out to the guys that did the brick work. They did an amazing job!
I’d like to see a cool roof hangout spot, but I like all of it, so do what you feel will be most fun and give you some place to relax in between your “must do” projects.
I am looking forward to the roof deck build, could you also show us how to clean up the brick behind you to their original sand colour like the ones you removed for the window. That would brighten up the walls alot . Thanks..
wow great watching those 2 guys doing the brickwork . Watching skilled trades at work is satisfying . The limestone cap looks amazing . They did a great job !
Yay new episode!
is it though?...
@@CallumKray Yup. Beetles & 'shrooms are new. Unfortunately. :-(
Metal does not transmit moisture. What it does transmit is heat - specifically from the inside to the outside, causing sweating on the inside.
Yes. Same reason a glass of ice water gets wet on the outside, leaving a puddle on the table: Water vapor in the air condenses on the cold surface.
The masons are real artist. Those guys are gems.
I could watch those brick layers all day. They are artist.
+1 for the rooftop mini challenge...so long as there are LEDs. Or not, go crazy and build something amazing to help you enjoy that awesome rooftop.
Lol now's a perfect opportunity to put in a dumbwaiter for groceries, since you're ripping up the front floor and all. Ooo you could make ii look like an industrial coffee table when it's up in the main space!
Roof deck project sounds fun and great timing for summer
Yes do the roof deck that will be a cool project
The gentlemam that did the brickwork, are way pro skilled. 3 thumbs up !!!
Yes! Roof hangout area sounds great!
Yes! Bring on the deck video! Such an amazing large space up there. Can't wait to see what you can do with it!
So sorry to hear about the little set back like those rotting mushrooming floors and the little pest in some of the wood. Like others have said, good thing you've become aware of it now before the reno was almost entirely finished. Hope you can get those completely cleaned out and they don't come back! I'll add. It's really nice to see you powering through despite the hard times and set-back. Good on you! Really proud and always happy to watch!
living room/kitchen is what im excited the most! cant wait for it to be finished. and yesss for the roofdeck!
Always excited for a new build video. It will be fun to see what you do with the outdoor space.
Do what makes you happy man, you need a break, you need a break. Build that deck.
ABSOLUTELY YES to the roof project video! Can't wait to see it!
1 step🦿 forward, 2 steps back🚶♂️🚶♂️.
Isn't that always the way⁉️🤔🤯
Shout out to the brick and window tradesmen. Nice job❗👏
I've said it before, but I can never get over the fact that 'murican craftsmen show up in like jeans and sneakers. Where I live even the two-guys-and-a-van construction guys are decked out in high-visibility gear branded with the company name. Obviously it doesn't say anything about the level of work they do, it's just funny how different it looks.
True, and thar tall scaffolding with no harness would get shut down in Australia for being unsafe.
Yes, I will look forward to seeing the deck build 👍
Great idea about a nice upper deck area with a covered area for hot sunny days! Window looks great!
Yes. Do the Rooftop challenge! Always up for seeing what you do!
Seeing you convert or Modustrial the Roof top would be so cool. Make sure that what ever you do, does not impact the weather proofing of your Roof Deck. Maybe you can create a Shed, Cover for access during more inclement weather entertaining. My friend had enclosed three sides with a roof for his back yard deck, it was pretty cool.
Hmmm. Giving us a quiz over a 2x4’s origins. That’s in interesting way to get me to go watch all of your old videos again. Guess I better get started
Pretty sure the answer is at the end in the recommended videos... ;)
I would love to see a roof deck build!
We had an electrical wire situation with an exterior wall modification. But here in Toronto, you must call Toronto Hydro. They came and placed this long orange cover on the street wires and rerouted the connection to the building to a temporary pole several feet back from the wall and further along past the original connecting point. And covered that in a long orange enclosure. Hey then charged us $5000 for the work but it included relocating the wires after the exterior wall modifications were done. They told us it was not safe to work within six feet of the wires. Even with the wires having heavy shielding under the right conditions you're close enough to become a spark gap!! 😯
Omg this was uploaded on my birthday! Best gift ever LOL, one of my favorite UA-cam series. I'm excited to see more of this renovation project come to fruition!
No bricks were harmed in the making of this film
Perfect❗ 🤣 🥰
That 2x4 @ 9:55 is from the Modustrial Sign you made a little while back.
P. S. Kat did an excellent job with the editing in this video!
100% agree, time to take a break & build that roof deck. LOL. Gonna need a spot to BBQ & beer with all these little things that keep coming up. Really sorry to hear about yet another flooring setback. At this point you've replace a good percentage of that floor.
Even if you don't have a challenge, you deserve a little break. That being said, yes to the challenge!
YES ROOF! Love patio stuff
So stoked to see the finished product
Why even ask lol of course you should show us some fun living space stuff!!
Roof deck would be a nice project to get a great space to relax and have fun
Great video. Still enjoying the whole process.
Crazy how I been watching this series since the beginning and just found out I don’t stay too far from the building (elston and montrose).
Love watching skilled masons.
Proud dad here! Just checking in son, hope you are doing well.
This episode flew by. Good luck with the floor rework. Crazy how many setbacks and unforeseen detours you come across in a project, especially one as huge as this.
