  • There is no "average" day for a Texas High School Band Director. But here's one random day!

As a band staff, we try to make sure that all our students and fellow directors are having a good time! With all the time that is put into band, it may as well be a fun time! This particular day was fairly typical, with before school rehearsals, band class, sectionals, instrument repairs, lunch and dinner, and some sort of an after school event.
Every day is busy, and this day was no different!

as a high school & adult music/hist/eng teacher I enjoyed this since you actually got footage of your instruction which sounds great from your students, clearly you've been teaching them quality musicianship. Plus, there's not enough h.s. music teacher/band instructors doin vids on UA-cam so it was a real pleasure relating to your notes. Your band sounds great w/ Glen Miller and if you do more vids about teaching and remote teaching/distance learning I'd be thrilled since music education in that medium is going to have to be inventive. Cheers!

Thank you so much! There's a real void in band director vlog style channels! Right now I'm working on a project with band directors from around the world to talk about what band is like outside the US. But yes, the plan is 100% to start making more vlogs about what teaching band is like. Thanks, again!

Brand new subscriber here - I liked watching this! Great video, great colleagues and your classes sound great - nice to see a music teacher vlog here!
I'm a high school science teacher, but majored in music as well in college (I also adjunct at a college teaching the class "Physics of Music"). My high school job gives me one less science class and instead I have Wind Ensemble on my list of classes, where I get to act as assistant conductor, and work with the Woodwinds during sectionals. It's made me love teaching so much more that I can be active in music, too.
I had a hard time deciding whether to go the science teacher or the music teacher route. I hope it was an easier choice for you to become a band director!

This is a great channel! You're privileged to work in a place that supports the arts so much. Recently, my high school alma mater lost their director and the band program only had 2 students that would return. There is no band. I organized an alumni/community band to play at the last 2 home football games and our final game is coming up. The first game, we had 104 show up. It was an amazing turnout.
The thought of there being no music in the program that I went through really saddens me. It has motivated me to try to obtain a teaching certification and try my hand at building a program... I am very nervous. This channel is giving me energy! I love seeing the amazing things you guys are doing!

Totally doable if you have the connections. You'd probably be taking a pay raise if you're moving from Mississippi.

Texas band is such a different universe from other areas of the country. I dream about working in a daily environment with multiple other competent instrumental teachers and musical adults. Here in Connecticut, school districts are small, and in most high schools each music teacher is responsible the entirety of their program, with no assistant directors, no itinerant instructors or anything like that, unless it happens to be a very large school. Our whole state is the size of the DFW Metroplex, with less than half the population, and we have 161 cities and towns, operating around 140 K-12 school districts. Looking at Texas and other states around the country, it just looks like we're utilizing our geography and personnel very inefficiently, and our students' music ensemble experience suffers as a result. I'm not saying we need to be more like "the Texas model," but I wish we at least had a similarly well thought-out system for the way our music programs operate, the way our schools and administrators relate to band, and the quality of experiences our students have. Just a thought while we're rethinking the way we do everything during COVID...

We really benefit from the culture of football and the "need" for big marching bands on Friday nights also. We also benefit from the previous generations of band directors that have organized and created the infrastructure of competitive systems and standards.

Tell that to Doc Severinsen. Or maybe don’t make petty critiques on a fun video. Check this video out. In the Mood g.co/kgs/UuZ9xe

Yoooooo! Of course I know him! He and I went to college together. He didn’t work at my school, but he did work for the other HS in Burleson before I started working there. He’s definitely a good dude!

That kid didn't get a chance to play that as a solo last year, so he's picked it up again for solo contest this year. I can think of worse tunes to hear every day! lol

Why would anyone ever want to do this job? This guy only put half the stuff band directors do on here. Hours of score study, lesson planning, dealing with student misbehavior, hostile parents. Having to learn evey instrument to a more than proficient level. Practicing your own instrument. Practicing piano. Memorizing fingerings and pedagogy for every instrument. Repairing instruments. Writing marching band shows. Working summers while other teachers are off. A lot of these people burn out and there is a high divorce rate among band directors. Unless youre superman or superwoman, its a near impossible job. I respect these people because you have to be a professional level musician and have incredible aural skills to do this, but i think they are insane.
